1.
הֹדוּ לַיהוָה כִּי-טוֹב: כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ.
hodu laYHWH ki-tov: ki le'olam chasdo.
'O give thanks unto the LORD, for He is good, for His mercy endureth for ever.'
2.
יֹאמְרוּ, גְּאוּלֵי יְהוָה-- אֲשֶׁר גְּאָלָם, מִיַּד-צָר.
yomru, ge'ulei YHWH--asher ge'alam, miyyad-tsar.
So let the redeemed of the LORD say, whom He hath redeemed from the hand of the adversary;
3.
וּמֵאֲרָצוֹת, קִבְּצָם: מִמִּזְרָח וּמִמַּעֲרָב; מִצָּפוֹן וּמִיָּם.
ume'aratzot kibetzam mimmizrach umimma'arav mitzafon umiyyam
And gathered them out of the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the sea.
4.
תָּעוּ בַמִּדְבָּר, בִּישִׁימוֹן דָּרֶךְ; עִיר מוֹשָׁב, לֹא מָצָאוּ.
ta'u vammidbar bishimon darekh ir moshav lo matza'u
They wandered in the wilderness in a desert way; they found no city of habitation.
5.
רְעֵבִים גַּם-צְמֵאִים-- נַפְשָׁם, בָּהֶם תִּתְעַטָּף.
re'evim gam tzelema'im nafsham bahem tit'ataf
Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.
6.
וַיִּצְעֲקוּ אֶל-יְהוָה, בַּצַּר לָהֶם; מִמְּצוּקוֹתֵיהֶם, יַצִּילֵם.
vaytza'eku el-YHWH batzar lahem mimmetzukotehem yatzilem
Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and He delivered them out of their distresses.
7.
וַיַּדְרִיכֵם, בְּדֶרֶךְ יְשָׁרָה-- לָלֶכֶת, אֶל-עִיר מוֹשָׁב.
vayadrikhem, bederekh yesharah-- lalekhet, el-ir moshav.
And He led them by a straight way, that they might go to a city of habitation.
8.
יוֹדוּ לַיהוָה חַסְדּוֹ; וְנִפְלְאוֹתָיו, לִבְנֵי אָדָם.
yodu laYHWH khasdo; venifle'otav, livnei adam.
Let them give thanks unto the LORD for His mercy, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!
9.
כִּי-הִשְׂבִּיעַ, נֶפֶשׁ שֹׁקֵקָה; וְנֶפֶשׁ רְעֵבָה, מִלֵּא-טוֹב.
ki-hishbi'a, nefesh shokekah; venefesh re'evah, mille-tov.
For He hath satisfied the longing soul, and the hungry soul He hath filled with good.
10.
יֹשְׁבֵי, חֹשֶׁךְ וְצַלְמָוֶת; אֲסִירֵי עֳנִי וּבַרְזֶל.
yoshevi, khoshek vetsalmavet; asirei oni uvarzel.
Such as sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron--
11.
כִּי-הִמְרוּ אִמְרֵי-אֵל; וַעֲצַת עֶלְיוֹן נָאָצוּ.
ki-himru imrei-el; va'atzat elyon na'atzu.
Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the Most High.
12.
וַיַּכְנַע בֶּעָמָל לִבָּם; כָּשְׁלוּ, וְאֵין עֹזֵר.
vayakhna be'amal libam; kashlu, ve'ein ozer.
Therefore He humbled their heart with travail, they stumbled, and there was none to help--
13.
וַיִּזְעֲקוּ אֶל-יְהוָה, בַּצַּר לָהֶם; מִמְּצֻקוֹתֵיהֶם, יוֹשִׁיעֵם.
vayiz'eku el-YHWH, batzar lahem; mimtzeqotehem, yoshi'em.
They cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them out of their distresses.
14.
יוֹצִיאֵם, מֵחֹשֶׁךְ וְצַלְמָוֶת; וּמוֹסְרוֹתֵיהֶם יְנַתֵּק.
yotzi'em, mekhoshekh vetzalmavet; umosrotehem yenateq.
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and broke their bands in sunder.
15.
יוֹדוּ לַיהוָה חַסְדּוֹ; וְנִפְלְאוֹתָיו, לִבְנֵי אָדָם.
yodu layhwh chasdo; venifle'otav, livnei adam.
Let them give thanks unto the LORD for His mercy, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!
16.
כִּי-שִׁבַּר, דַּלְתוֹת נְחֹשֶׁת; וּבְרִיחֵי בַרְזֶל גִּדֵּעַ.
ki-shibbar, daltot nechoshet; uverichei barzel gidde'a.
For He hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.
17.
אֱוִלִים, מִדֶּרֶךְ פִּשְׁעָם; וּמֵעֲוֺנֹתֵיהֶם, יִתְעַנּוּ.
ewilim, miderekh pish'am; ume'awonoteihem, yit'annu.
Crazed because of the way of their transgression, and afflicted because of their iniquities--
18.
כָּל-אֹכֶל, תְּתַעֵב נַפְשָׁם; וַיַּגִּיעוּ, עַד-שַׁעֲרֵי מָוֶת.
kol-okhel, teta'ev nafsham; vayyaggi'u, ad-sha'arei mawet.
Their soul abhorred all manner of food, and they drew near unto the gates of death--
19.
וַיִּזְעֲקוּ אֶל-יְהוָה, בַּצַּר לָהֶם; מִמְּצֻקוֹתֵיהֶם יוֹשִׁיעֵם.
vayiz'uku el-YHWH, batzar lahem; mimezuqotehem yoshi'em.
They cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them out of their distresses;
20.
יִשְׁלַח דְּבָרוֹ, וְיִרְפָּאֵם; וִימַלֵּט, מִשְּׁחִיתוֹתָם.
yishlach devaro, veyirpa'em; vimalet, mishechitotam.
He sent His word, and healed them, and delivered them from their graves.
21.
יוֹדוּ לַיהוָה חַסְדּוֹ; וְנִפְלְאוֹתָיו, לִבְנֵי אָדָם.
yodu laYHWH chasdo; venifle'otav, livnei adam.
Let them give thanks unto the LORD for His mercy, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!
22.
וְיִזְבְּחוּ, זִבְחֵי תוֹדָה; וִיסַפְּרוּ מַעֲשָׂיו בְּרִנָּה.
veyizbechu, zivhei todah; visaperu ma'asav berinnah.
And let them offer the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare His works with singing.
23.
יוֹרְדֵי הַיָּם, בָּאֳנִיּוֹת; עֹשֵׂי מְלָאכָה, בְּמַיִם רַבִּים.
yorede hayam, ba'oniyot; osei melakhah, bemayim rabim.
They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters--
24.
הֵמָּה רָאוּ, מַעֲשֵׂי יְהוָה; וְנִפְלְאוֹתָיו, בִּמְצוּלָה.
hemmah ra'u, ma'asei YHWH; venifle'otav, bimtzulah.
These saw the works of the LORD, and His wonders in the deep;
25.
וַיֹּאמֶר--וַיַּעֲמֵד, רוּחַ סְעָרָה; וַתְּרוֹמֵם גַּלָּיו.
vayomer--vaya'amed, ruach se'arah; vateromem gallayim.
For He commanded, and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves thereof;
26.
יַעֲלוּ שָׁמַיִם, יֵרְדוּ תְהוֹמוֹת; נַפְשָׁם, בְּרָעָה תִתְמוֹגָג.
ya'alu shamayim, yeredu tehomot; nafsham, bera'ah titmogag.
They mounted up to the heaven, they went down to the deeps; their soul melted away because of trouble;
27.
יָחוֹגּוּ וְיָנוּעוּ, כַּשִּׁכּוֹר; וְכָל-חָכְמָתָם, תִּתְבַּלָּע.
yakhogu veyanu'u, kashikor; vekhol-khokhmatam, titballa'.
They reeled to and fro, and staggered like a drunken man, and all their wisdom was swallowed up--
28.
וַיִּצְעֲקוּ אֶל-יְהוָה, בַּצַּר לָהֶם; וּמִמְּצוּקֹתֵיהֶם, יוֹצִיאֵם.
vayitze'aku el-YHWH, batzar lahem; umimmetzuqotehem, yotzi'em.
They cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distresses.
29.
יָקֵם סְעָרָה, לִדְמָמָה; וַיֶּחֱשׁוּ, גַּלֵּיהֶם.
yaqem se'arah, lidmamah; vayyekheshu, gallehem.
He made the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof were still.
30.
וַיִּשְׂמְחוּ כִי-יִשְׁתֹּקוּ; וַיַּנְחֵם, אֶל-מְחוֹז חֶפְצָם.
vayyismekhu khi-yishtoqu; vayyankhem, el-mekhoz kheftzam.
Then were they glad because they were quiet, and He led them unto their desired haven.
31.
יוֹדוּ לַיהוָה חַסְדּוֹ; וְנִפְלְאוֹתָיו, לִבְנֵי אָדָם.
yodu la'Adonai khasdo; venifle'otav, livnei adam.
Let them give thanks unto the LORD for His mercy, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!
32.
וִירוֹמְמוּהוּ, בִּקְהַל-עָם; וּבְמוֹשַׁב זְקֵנִים יְהַלְלוּהוּ.
viromemuhu, bikhal-am; uvemoshav zkenim yehalluhu.
Let them exalt Him also in the assembly of the people, and praise Him in the seat of the elders.
33.
יָשֵׂם נְהָרוֹת לְמִדְבָּר; וּמֹצָאֵי מַיִם, לְצִמָּאוֹן.
yasem neharot lemidbar; umotza'ei mayim, letzima'on.
He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and watersprings into a thirsty ground;
34.
אֶרֶץ פְּרִי, לִמְלֵחָה; מֵרָעַת, יוֹשְׁבֵי בָהּ.
eretz peri, limlekhah; mera'at, yoshvei vah.
A fruitful land into a salt waste, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.
35.
יָשֵׂם מִדְבָּר, לַאֲגַם-מַיִם; וְאֶרֶץ צִיָּה, לְמֹצָאֵי מָיִם.
yasem midbar la'agam-mayim ve'erets tsiyah lemotsa'ei mayim
He turneth a wilderness into a pool of water, and a dry land into watersprings.
36.
וַיּוֹשֶׁב שָׁם רְעֵבִים; וַיְכוֹנְנוּ, עִיר מוֹשָׁב.
vayyoshev sham re'evim vaykhonenu ir moshav
And there He maketh the hungry to dwell, and they establish a city of habitation;
37.
וַיִּזְרְעוּ שָׂדוֹת, וַיִּטְּעוּ כְרָמִים; וַיַּעֲשׂוּ, פְּרִי תְבוּאָה.
vayyizru sadot vayyite'u kharim vayya'asu peri tevu'ah
And sow fields, and plant vineyards, which yield fruits of increase.
38.
וַיְבָרְכֵם וַיִּרְבּוּ מְאֹד; וּבְהֶמְתָּם, לֹא יַמְעִיט.
vayvarakhem vayyirbu me'od u-vehemtam lo yam'it
He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly, and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.
39.
וַיִּמְעֲטוּ וַיָּשֹׁחוּ-- מֵעֹצֶר רָעָה וְיָגוֹן.
vayim'atu vayashohu, me'otzer ra'ah veyagon.
Again, they are minished and dwindle away through oppression of evil and sorrow.
40.
שֹׁפֵךְ בּוּז, עַל-נְדִיבִים; וַיַּתְעֵם, בְּתֹהוּ לֹא-דָרֶךְ.
shofek buz, al-nedivim; vayat'em, betohu lo-darekh.
He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the waste, where there is no way.
41.
וַיְשַׂגֵּב אֶבְיוֹן מֵעוֹנִי; וַיָּשֶׂם כַּצֹּאן, מִשְׁפָּחוֹת.
vyesagev evyon me'oni; vayasem katzon, mishpachot.
Yet setteth He the needy on high from affliction, and maketh his families like a flock.
42.
יִרְאוּ יְשָׁרִים וְיִשְׂמָחוּ; וְכָל-עַוְלָה, קָפְצָה פִּיהָ.
yir'u yesharim veyismachu; vekhol-avlah, kafchah piha.
The upright see it, and are glad; and all iniquity stoppeth her mouth.
43.
מִי-חָכָם וְיִשְׁמָר-אֵלֶּה; וְיִתְבּוֹנְנוּ, חַסְדֵי יְהוָה.
Mi-khakham ve'yishmar-eleh; ve'yitbonenu, khasde YHWH.
Whoso is wise, let him observe these things, and let them consider the mercies of the LORD.
