1.
וַיְהִי, אַחֲרֵי מוֹת יְהוֹשֻׁעַ, וַיִּשְׁאֲלוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, בַּיהוָה לֵאמֹר: מִי יַעֲלֶה-לָּנוּ אֶל-הַכְּנַעֲנִי בַּתְּחִלָּה, לְהִלָּחֶם בּוֹ.
vayhi akharei mot yehoshua, vayish'alu bnei yisrael, badonai lemor: mi ya'ale-lanu el-hakna'ani batkhillah, lehillakhem bo.
And it came to pass after the death of Joshua, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying: 'Who shall go up for us first against the Canaanites, to fight against them?'
2.
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה, יְהוּדָה יַעֲלֶה: הִנֵּה נָתַתִּי אֶת-הָאָרֶץ, בְּיָדוֹ.
vayomer adonai, yehudah ya'ale: hinneh natatti et-ha'aretz, beyado.
And LORD said: 'Judah shall go up; behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.'
3.
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוּדָה לְשִׁמְעוֹן אָחִיו עֲלֵה אִתִּי בְגֹרָלִי, וְנִלָּחֲמָה בַּכְּנַעֲנִי, וְהָלַכְתִּי גַם-אֲנִי אִתְּךָ, בְּגוֹרָלֶךָ; וַיֵּלֶךְ אִתּוֹ, שִׁמְעוֹן.
vayomer yehudah leshim'on akhiv aleh iti vegorali, venillakhama bakna'ani, vehalakti gam-ani itkha, begoralekha; vayelekh itto, shim'on.
And Judah said unto Simeon his brother: 'Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot.' So Simeon went with him.
4.
וַיַּעַל יְהוּדָה, וַיִּתֵּן יְהוָה אֶת-הַכְּנַעֲנִי וְהַפְּרִזִּי בְּיָדָם; וַיַּכּוּם בְּבֶזֶק, עֲשֶׂרֶת אֲלָפִים אִישׁ.
vay'al yehudah, vayitten adonai et-hakna'ani vehaperizzi beyadam; vayyakkum bevezek, aseret alafim ish.
And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand; and they smote of them in Bezek ten thousand men.
5.
וַיִּמְצְאוּ אֶת-אֲדֹנִי בֶזֶק, בְּבֶזֶק, וַיִּלָּחֲמוּ, בּוֹ; וַיַּכּוּ, אֶת-הַכְּנַעֲנִי וְאֶת-הַפְּרִזִּי.
vayimtz'u et-adoni vezek, bevzek, vayillachamu, bo; vayaku, et-hak'na'ani ve'et-hap'rizzi.
And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek; and they fought against him, and they smote the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
6.
וַיָּנָס אֲדֹנִי בֶזֶק, וַיִּרְדְּפוּ אַחֲרָיו; וַיֹּאחֲזוּ אוֹתוֹ--וַיְקַצְּצוּ, אֶת-בְּהֹנוֹת יָדָיו וְרַגְלָיו.
vayanas adoni vezek, vayir'dufu acharav; vayochazu oto--vaykatz'tsu, et-b'honot yadav v'raglav.
But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.
7.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֲדֹנִי-בֶזֶק, שִׁבְעִים מְלָכִים בְּהֹנוֹת יְדֵיהֶם וְרַגְלֵיהֶם מְקֻצָּצִים הָיוּ מְלַקְּטִים תַּחַת שֻׁלְחָנִי--כַּאֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתִי, כֵּן שִׁלַּם-לִי אֱלֹהִים; וַיְבִיאֻהוּ יְרוּשָׁלִַם, וַיָּמָת שָׁם.
vayomer adoni-vezek, shiv'im m'lakim b'honot y'deihem v'ragleihem m'kutatzim hayu m'lak'tim tachat shulchani--ka'asher asiti, ken shillam-li Elohim; vayvi'uhu Yerushalayim, vayamat sham.
And Adoni-bezek said: 'Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered food under my table; as I have done, so God hath requited me.' And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.
8.
וַיִּלָּחֲמוּ בְנֵי-יְהוּדָה, בִּירוּשָׁלִַם, וַיִּלְכְּדוּ אוֹתָהּ, וַיַּכּוּהָ לְפִי-חָרֶב; וְאֶת-הָעִיר, שִׁלְּחוּ בָאֵשׁ.
vayillachamu v'nei-Yehuda, birushalayim, vayilkedu ota, vayakuha l'fi-charev; ve'et-ha'ir, shilluchu ba'esh.
And the children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.
9.
וְאַחַר, יָרְדוּ בְּנֵי יְהוּדָה, לְהִלָּחֵם, בַּכְּנַעֲנִי--יוֹשֵׁב הָהָר, וְהַנֶּגֶב וְהַשְּׁפֵלָה.
ve'achar yaredu bene Yehuda lehillahem baknana'i yoshev hahar vehanegev vehashefela.
And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites that dwelt in the hill-country, and in the South, and in the Lowland.
10.
וַיֵּלֶךְ יְהוּדָה, אֶל-הַכְּנַעֲנִי הַיּוֹשֵׁב בְּחֶבְרוֹן, וְשֵׁם-חֶבְרוֹן לְפָנִים, קִרְיַת אַרְבַּע; וַיַּכּוּ אֶת-שֵׁשַׁי וְאֶת-אֲחִימַן, וְאֶת-תַּלְמָי.
vayelekh Yehuda el haknana'i hayoshev behekhron veshem-khevron lepanim Kiryat Arba; vayaku et-sheshai ve'et-akhiman ve'et-talmay.
And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron--now the name of Hebron beforetime was Kiriath-arba--and they smote Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.
11.
וַיֵּלֶךְ מִשָּׁם, אֶל-יוֹשְׁבֵי דְּבִיר; וְשֵׁם-דְּבִיר לְפָנִים, קִרְיַת-סֵפֶר.
vayelekh misham el-yoshve devir; veshem-devir lepanim Kiryat-Sefer.
And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir--now the name of Debir beforetime was Kiriath-sepher.
12.
וַיֹּאמֶר כָּלֵב, אֲשֶׁר-יַכֶּה אֶת-קִרְיַת-סֵפֶר וּלְכָדָהּ--וְנָתַתִּי לוֹ אֶת-עַכְסָה בִתִּי, לְאִשָּׁה.
vayomer Kalev asher-yakhe et-Kiryat-Sefer ulekhadah venatatti lo et-akhsa vitti le'isha.
And Caleb said: 'He that smiteth Kiriath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.'
13.
וַיִּלְכְּדָהּ עָתְנִיאֵל בֶּן-קְנַז, אֲחִי כָלֵב הַקָּטֹן מִמֶּנּוּ; וַיִּתֶּן-לוֹ אֶת-עַכְסָה בִתּוֹ, לְאִשָּׁה.
vayilkeda'h otniel ben-kenaz, akhi kalev hakaton mimenu; vayiten-lo et-akhsah vito, le'ishah.
And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.
14.
וַיְהִי בְּבוֹאָהּ, וַתְּסִיתֵהוּ לִשְׁאֹל מֵאֵת-אָבִיהָ הַשָּׂדֶה, וַתִּצְנַח, מֵעַל הַחֲמוֹר; וַיֹּאמֶר-לָהּ כָּלֵב, מַה-לָּךְ.
vayhi bevo'ah, vatesitehu lish'ol me'et-aviha hasadeh, vatitznakh, me'al hakhamor; vayomer-lah kalev, mah-lakh.
And it came to pass, when she came unto him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field; and she alighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her: 'What wouldest thou?'
15.
וַתֹּאמֶר לוֹ הָבָה-לִּי בְרָכָה, כִּי אֶרֶץ הַנֶּגֶב נְתַתָּנִי, וְנָתַתָּה לִי, גֻּלֹּת מָיִם; וַיִּתֶּן-לָהּ כָּלֵב, אֵת גֻּלֹּת עִלִּית, וְאֵת, גֻּלֹּת תַּחְתִּית.
vatomer lo havah-li vrakhah, ki eretz hanegev netatani, venatatah li, gulot mayim; vayiten-lah kalev, et gulot ilit, ve'et, gulot takhtit.
And she said unto him: 'Give me a blessing; for that thou hast set me in the Southland, give me therefore springs of water.' And Caleb gave her the Upper Springs and the Nether Springs.
16.
וּבְנֵי קֵינִי חֹתֵן מֹשֶׁה עָלוּ מֵעִיר הַתְּמָרִים, אֶת-בְּנֵי יְהוּדָה, מִדְבַּר יְהוּדָה, אֲשֶׁר בְּנֶגֶב עֲרָד; וַיֵּלֶךְ, וַיֵּשֶׁב אֶת-הָעָם.
uvnei keini khoten moshe alu me'ir hatmarim, et-bnei yehudah, midbar yehudah, asher benegev arad; vayelekh, vayeshev et-ha'am.
And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up out of the city of palm-trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt with the people.
17.
וַיֵּלֶךְ יְהוּדָה, אֶת-שִׁמְעוֹן אָחִיו, וַיַּכּוּ, אֶת-הַכְּנַעֲנִי יוֹשֵׁב צְפַת; וַיַּחֲרִימוּ אוֹתָהּ, וַיִּקְרָא אֶת-שֵׁם-הָעִיר חָרְמָה.
vayelekh yehudah, et-shim'on akhiv, vayakku, et-hakna'ani yoshev tsefat; vayakharimu otah, vayikra et-shem-ha'ir khormah.
And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they smote the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.
18.
וַיִּלְכֹּד יְהוּדָה אֶת-עַזָּה וְאֶת-גְּבוּלָהּ, וְאֶת-אַשְׁקְלוֹן וְאֶת-גְּבוּלָהּ, וְאֶת-עֶקְרוֹן, וְאֶת-גְּבוּלָהּ.
vayilkod yehudah et-'azah ve'et-gevulah, ve'et-ashkelon ve'et-gevulah, ve'et-'eqron, ve'et-gevulah.
Also Judah took Gaza with the border thereof, and Ashkelon with the border thereof, and Ekron with the border thereof.
19.
וַיְהִי יְהוָה אֶת-יְהוּדָה, וַיֹּרֶשׁ אֶת-הָהָר: כִּי לֹא לְהוֹרִישׁ אֶת-יֹשְׁבֵי הָעֵמֶק, כִּי-רֶכֶב בַּרְזֶל לָהֶם.
vayhi YHWH et-yehudah, vayoresh et-hahar: ki lo lehorish et-yoshvei ha'emek, ki-rekhev barzel lahem.
And the LORD was with Judah; and he drove out the inhabitants of the hill-country; for he could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.
20.
וַיִּתְּנוּ לְכָלֵב אֶת-חֶבְרוֹן, כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר מֹשֶׁה; וַיּוֹרֶשׁ מִשָּׁם, אֶת-שְׁלֹשָׁה בְּנֵי הָעֲנָק.
vayittenu lekalev et-khebron, ka'asher diber mosheh; vayoresh misham, et-sheloshah benei ha'anaq.
And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses had spoken; and he drove out thence the three sons of Anak.
21.
וְאֶת-הַיְבוּסִי יֹשֵׁב יְרוּשָׁלִַם, לֹא הוֹרִישׁוּ בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן; וַיֵּשֶׁב הַיְבוּסִי אֶת-בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן, בִּירוּשָׁלִַם, עַד, הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה.
ve'et-hayevusi yoshev Yerushalayim, lo horishu bene Binyamin; vayyeshev hayevusi et-bene Binyamin, biYerushalayim, ad, hayom hazeh.
And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwelt with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem, unto this day.
22.
וַיַּעֲלוּ בֵית-יוֹסֵף גַּם-הֵם, בֵּית-אֵל; וַיהוָה, עִמָּם.
vayya'alu vet-Yosef gam-hem, vet-El; vaYHWH, immam.
And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Beth-el; and the LORD was with them.
23.
וַיָּתִירוּ בֵית-יוֹסֵף, בְּבֵית-אֵל; וְשֵׁם-הָעִיר לְפָנִים, לוּז.
vayyatiru vet-Yosef, beVet-El; veshem-ha'ir lefanim, Luz.
And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Beth-el--now the name of the city beforetime was Luz.
24.
וַיִּרְאוּ, הַשֹּׁמְרִים, אִישׁ, יוֹצֵא מִן-הָעִיר; וַיֹּאמְרוּ לוֹ, הַרְאֵנוּ נָא אֶת-מְבוֹא הָעִיר, וְעָשִׂינוּ עִמְּךָ, חָסֶד.
vayyir'u, hashomerim, ish, yotze min-ha'ir; vayyomru lo, har'enu na et-mevo ha'ir, ve'asinu immakha, khased.
And the watchers saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him: 'Show us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will deal kindly with thee.'
25.
וַיַּרְאֵם אֶת-מְבוֹא הָעִיר, וַיַּכּוּ אֶת-הָעִיר לְפִי-חָרֶב; וְאֶת-הָאִישׁ וְאֶת-כָּל-מִשְׁפַּחְתּוֹ, שִׁלֵּחוּ.
vayar'em et-mevo ha'ир, vayaku et-ha'ir lefi-kharev; ve'et-ha'ish ve'et-kol-mishpakhto, shilekhu.
And he showed them the entrance into the city, and they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man go and all his family.
26.
וַיֵּלֶךְ הָאִישׁ, אֶרֶץ הַחִתִּים; וַיִּבֶן עִיר, וַיִּקְרָא שְׁמָהּ לוּז--הוּא שְׁמָהּ, עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה.
vayelekh ha'ish, eretz hakhitim; vayiven ir, vayikra shemah luz--hu shemah, ad hayom hazeh.
And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz, which is the name thereof unto this day.
27.
וְלֹא-הוֹרִישׁ מְנַשֶּׁה, אֶת-בֵּית-שְׁאָן וְאֶת-בְּנוֹתֶיהָ וְאֶת-תַּעְנַךְ וְאֶת-בְּנֹתֶיהָ, וְאֶת-יושב יוֹשְׁבֵי דוֹר וְאֶת-בְּנוֹתֶיהָ וְאֶת-יוֹשְׁבֵי יִבְלְעָם וְאֶת-בְּנֹתֶיהָ, וְאֶת-יוֹשְׁבֵי מְגִדּוֹ וְאֶת-בְּנוֹתֶיהָ; וַיּוֹאֶל, הַכְּנַעֲנִי, לָשֶׁבֶת, בָּאָרֶץ הַזֹּאת.
velo-horish menasheh, et-beit-she'an ve'et-benoteha ve'et-ta'nakh ve'et-benoteha, ve'et-yoshvei dor ve'et-benoteha ve'et-yoshvei yivle'am ve'et-benoteha, ve'et-yoshvei megido ve'et-benoteha; vayo'el, hakna'ani, lashevet, ba'aretz hazot.
And Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its towns, nor of Taanach and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Canaanites were resolved to dwell in that land.
28.
וַיְהִי כִּי-חָזַק יִשְׂרָאֵל, וַיָּשֶׂם אֶת-הַכְּנַעֲנִי לָמַס; וְהוֹרֵישׁ, לֹא הוֹרִישׁוֹ.
vayhi ki-khazaq yisra'el, vayasem et-hakna'ani lamas; vehoreish, lo horisho.
And it came to pass, when Israel was waxen strong, that they put the Canaanites to task-work, but did in no wise drive them out.
29.
וְאֶפְרַיִם לֹא הוֹרִישׁ, אֶת-הַכְּנַעֲנִי הַיּוֹשֵׁב בְּגָזֶר; וַיֵּשֶׁב הַכְּנַעֲנִי בְּקִרְבּוֹ, בְּגָזֶר.
ve'efrayim lo horish, et-hak'na'ani hayoshev b'gazer; vayeshev hak'na'ani b'kirbo, b'gazer.
And Ephraim drove not out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.
30.
זְבוּלֻן, לֹא הוֹרִישׁ אֶת-יוֹשְׁבֵי קִטְרוֹן, וְאֶת-יוֹשְׁבֵי, נַהֲלֹל; וַיֵּשֶׁב הַכְּנַעֲנִי בְּקִרְבּוֹ, וַיִּהְיוּ לָמַס.
zevulun, lo horish et-yoshvei kitron, ve'et-yoshvei, nahalol; vayeshev hak'na'ani b'kirbo, vayihyu lamas.
Zebulun drove not out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributary.
31.
אָשֵׁר, לֹא הוֹרִישׁ אֶת-יֹשְׁבֵי עַכּוֹ, וְאֶת-יוֹשְׁבֵי, צִידוֹן; וְאֶת-אַחְלָב וְאֶת-אַכְזִיב וְאֶת-חֶלְבָּה, וְאֶת-אֲפִיק וְאֶת-רְחֹב.
asher, lo horish et-yoshvei akko, ve'et-yoshvei, tzidon; ve'et-ahlav ve'et-akhziv ve'et-helbah, ve'et-afik ve'et-rchov.
Asher drove not out the inhabitants of Acco, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob;
32.
וַיֵּשֶׁב, הָאָשֵׁרִי, בְּקֶרֶב הַכְּנַעֲנִי, יֹשְׁבֵי הָאָרֶץ: כִּי, לֹא הוֹרִישׁוֹ.
vayeshev, ha'asheri, b'kerev hak'na'ani, yoshvei ha'aretz: ki, lo horisho.
but the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.
33.
נַפְתָּלִי, לֹא-הוֹרִישׁ אֶת-יֹשְׁבֵי בֵית-שֶׁמֶשׁ וְאֶת-יֹשְׁבֵי בֵית-עֲנָת, וַיֵּשֶׁב, בְּקֶרֶב הַכְּנַעֲנִי יֹשְׁבֵי הָאָרֶץ; וְיֹשְׁבֵי בֵית-שֶׁמֶשׁ וּבֵית עֲנָת, הָיוּ לָהֶם לָמַס.
Naftali, lo-horish et-yoshve vet-shemesh ve'et-yoshve vet-'anat, vayyeshev, bekerev hakhena'ani yoshve ha'aretz; veyoshve vet-shemesh uve'et 'anat, hayu lahem lamas.
Naphtali drove not out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became tributary unto them.
34.
וַיִּלְחֲצוּ הָאֱמֹרִי אֶת-בְּנֵי-דָן, הָהָרָה: כִּי-לֹא נְתָנוֹ, לָרֶדֶת לָעֵמֶק.
vayyilkhatzu ha'emori et-bnei-dan, hahara: ki-lo netano, laredet la'emek.
And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the hill-country; for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley.
35.
וַיּוֹאֶל הָאֱמֹרִי לָשֶׁבֶת בְּהַר-חֶרֶס, בְּאַיָּלוֹן וּבְשַׁעַלְבִים; וַתִּכְבַּד יַד בֵּית-יוֹסֵף, וַיִּהְיוּ לָמַס.
vayyo'el ha'emori lashevet behar-kheres, be'ayalon uvesha'alvim; vattikhbad yad bet-yosef, vayyihyu lamas.
But the Amorites were resolved to dwell in Harheres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim; yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributary.
36.
וּגְבוּל, הָאֱמֹרִי, מִמַּעֲלֵה, עַקְרַבִּים--מֵהַסֶּלַע, וָמָעְלָה.
ugvul, ha'emori, mimma'aleh, 'akrabim--mehasela, vama'elah.
And the border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela, and upward.
