1.
וְאוּלָם--שְׁמַע-נָא אִיּוֹב מִלָּי; וְכָל-דְּבָרַי הַאֲזִינָה.
ve'ulam shema-na iyov millai vekhal-devaray ha'azinah.
Howbeit, Job, I pray thee, hear my speech, and hearken to all my words.
2.
הִנֵּה-נָא, פָּתַחְתִּי פִי; דִּבְּרָה לְשׁוֹנִי בְחִכִּי.
hinneh-na patyakhti fi dibberah leshoni vekhikki.
Behold now, I have opened my mouth, my tongue hath spoken in my mouth.
3.
יֹשֶׁר-לִבִּי אֲמָרָי; וְדַעַת שְׂפָתַי, בָּרוּר מִלֵּלוּ.
yosher-libbi amaray vedahat sefatay barur millelu.
My words shall utter the uprightness of my heart; and that which my lips know they shall speak sincerely.
4.
רוּחַ-אֵל עָשָׂתְנִי; וְנִשְׁמַת שַׁדַּי תְּחַיֵּנִי.
ruakh-el asatni venishmat shadday tekhiyyeni.
The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty given me life.
5.
אִם-תּוּכַל הֲשִׁיבֵנִי; עֶרְכָה לְפָנַי, הִתְיַצָּבָה.
im-tukhal hashiveni; erkah lefanay, hityatzavah.
If thou canst, answer thou me, set thy words in order before me, stand forth.
6.
הֵן-אֲנִי כְפִיךָ לָאֵל; מֵחֹמֶר, קֹרַצְתִּי גַם-אָנִי.
hen-ani khefikha la'el; mekhomer, koratzti gam-ani.
Behold, I am toward God even as thou art; I also am formed out of the clay.
7.
הִנֵּה אֵמָתִי, לֹא תְבַעֲתֶךָּ; וְאַכְפִּי, עָלֶיךָ לֹא-יִכְבָּד.
hinneh emati, lo teva'etekha; ve'akfi, aleykha lo-ikhbad.
Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my pressure be heavy upon thee.
8.
אַךְ, אָמַרְתָּ בְאָזְנָי; וְקוֹל מִלִּין אֶשְׁמָע.
akh, amarta ve'oznay; vekol millin eshma'.
Surely thou hast spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words;
9.
זַךְ אֲנִי, בְּלִי-פָשַׁע: חַף אָנֹכִי; וְלֹא עָוֺן לִי.
zakh ani, beli-pasha: chaf anokhi; velo avon li.
'I am clean, without transgression, I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me;
10.
הֵן תְּנוּאוֹת, עָלַי יִמְצָא; יַחְשְׁבֵנִי לְאוֹיֵב לוֹ.
hen tenu'ot, alay yimtza; yachsheveni le'oyev lo.
Behold, He findeth occasions against me, He counteth me for His enemy;
11.
יָשֵׂם בַּסַּד רַגְלָי; יִשְׁמֹר, כָּל-אָרְחֹתָי.
yasem basad raglay; yishmor, kol-archotay.
He putteth my feet in the stocks, He marketh all my paths.'
12.
הֶן-זֹאת לֹא-צָדַקְתָּ אֶעֱנֶךָּ: כִּי-יִרְבֶּה אֱלוֹהַּ, מֵאֱנוֹשׁ.
hen-zot lo-tzadakta e'enekka: ki-yirbeh eloah, me'enosh.
Behold, I answer thee: In this thou art not right, that God is too great for man;
13.
מַדּוּעַ, אֵלָיו רִיבוֹתָ: כִּי כָל-דְּבָרָיו, לֹא יַעֲנֶה.
madua elav rivota ki khol devarav lo ya'aneh
Why hast thou striven against Him? seeing that He will not answer any of his words.
14.
כִּי-בְאַחַת יְדַבֶּר-אֵל; וּבִשְׁתַּיִם, לֹא יְשׁוּרֶנָּה.
ki ve'achat yedaber el uvishtayim lo yeshurennah
For God speaketh in one way, yea in two, though man perceiveth it not.
15.
בַּחֲלוֹם, חֶזְיוֹן לַיְלָה--בִּנְפֹל תַּרְדֵּמָה, עַל-אֲנָשִׁים; בִּתְנוּמוֹת, עֲלֵי מִשְׁכָּב.
bakhalom khezyon layla binfol tardemah al anashim bitnumot alei mishkav
In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;
16.
אָז יִגְלֶה, אֹזֶן אֲנָשִׁים; וּבְמֹסָרָם יַחְתֹּם.
az yigleh ozen anashim uvemosaram yakhtom
Then He openeth the ears of men, and by their chastisement sealeth the decree,
17.
לְהָסִיר, אָדָם מַעֲשֶׂה; וְגֵוָה מִגֶּבֶר יְכַסֶּה.
lehasir, adam ma'aseh; vegevah migever yekasseh.
That men may put away their purpose, and that He may hide pride from man;
18.
יַחְשֹׂךְ נַפְשׁוֹ, מִנִּי-שָׁחַת; וְחַיָּתוֹ, מֵעֲבֹר בַּשָּׁלַח.
yahshok nafsho, minni-shachat; vechayyato, me'avor bashallach.
That He may keep back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.
19.
וְהוּכַח בְּמַכְאוֹב, עַל-מִשְׁכָּבוֹ; וריב וְרוֹב עֲצָמָיו אֵתָן.
vehuchakh bemakhov, al-mishkavo; verov atsamav etan.
He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and all his bones grow stiff;
20.
וְזִהֲמַתּוּ חַיָּתוֹ לָחֶם; וְנַפְשׁוֹ, מַאֲכַל תַּאֲוָה.
vezihamattu chayato lachem; venafsho, ma'akal ta'avah.
So that his life maketh him to abhor bread, and his soul dainty food.
21.
יִכֶל בְּשָׂרוֹ מֵרֹאִי; ושפי וְשֻׁפּוּ עַצְמֹתָיו, לֹא רֻאּוּ.
yikhel besaro mero'i; veshfi veshufu atzmotav, lo ru'u.
His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones corrode to unsightliness.
22.
וַתִּקְרַב לַשַּׁחַת נַפְשׁוֹ; וְחַיָּתוֹ, לַמְמִתִים.
vattikrav lashakhat nafsho; vechayato, lammitim.
Yea, his soul draweth near unto the pit, and his life to the destroyers.
23.
אִם-יֵשׁ עָלָיו, מַלְאָךְ--מֵלִיץ, אֶחָד מִנִּי-אָלֶף: לְהַגִּיד לְאָדָם יָשְׁרוֹ.
im-yesh alav, mal'akh--melitz, echad minni-alef: lehaggid l'adam yashro.
If there be for him an angel, an intercessor, one among a thousand, to vouch for a man's uprightness;
24.
וַיְחֻנֶּנּוּ--וַיֹּאמֶר, פְּדָעֵהוּ מֵרֶדֶת שָׁחַת; מָצָאתִי כֹפֶר.
vaychunennu--vayomer, pde'ehu meredet shakhat; matzati khofer.
Then He is gracious unto him, and saith: 'Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom.'
25.
רֻטְפַשׁ בְּשָׂרוֹ מִנֹּעַר; יָשׁוּב, לִימֵי עֲלוּמָיו.
rut-fash besaro mino'ar; yashuv limei alumav.
His flesh is tenderer than a child's; he returneth to the days of his youth;
26.
יֶעְתַּר אֶל-אֱלוֹהַּ, וַיִּרְצֵהוּ, וַיַּרְא פָּנָיו, בִּתְרוּעָה;וַיָּשֶׁב לֶאֱנוֹשׁ, צִדְקָתוֹ.
ye'tar el-Eloah, vayirtzehu, vayar panav, bitru'ah; vayashev le'enosh, tzidqato.
He prayeth unto God, and He is favourable unto him; so that he seeth His face with joy; and He restoreth unto man his righteousness.
27.
יָשֹׁר, עַל-אֲנָשִׁים, וַיֹּאמֶר, חָטָאתִי וְיָשָׁר הֶעֱוֵיתִי; וְלֹא-שָׁוָה לִי.
yashor, al-anashim, vayomer, khatati veyashar he'eveti; velo-shavah li.
He cometh before men, and saith: 'I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not.'
28.
פָּדָה נפשי נַפְשׁוֹ, מֵעֲבֹר בַּשָּׁחַת; וחיתי וְחַיָּתוֹ, בָּאוֹר תִּרְאֶה.
padah nafsho, me'avor bashakhat; vekhayato, ba'or tir'eh.
So He redeemeth his soul from going into the pit, and his life beholdeth the light.
29.
הֶן-כָּל-אֵלֶּה, יִפְעַל-אֵל-- פַּעֲמַיִם שָׁלוֹשׁ עִם-גָּבֶר.
Hen-kol-eleh, yif'al-el-- pa'amayim shalosh im-gaver.
Lo, all these things doth God work, twice, yea thrice, with a man,
30.
לְהָשִׁיב נַפְשׁוֹ, מִנִּי-שָׁחַת-- לֵאוֹר, בְּאוֹר הַחַיִּים.
Lehashiv nafsho, minni-shachat-- le'or, be'or hachayim.
To bring back his soul from the pit, that he may be enlightened with the light of the living.
31.
הַקְשֵׁב אִיּוֹב שְׁמַע-לִי; הַחֲרֵשׁ, וְאָנֹכִי אֲדַבֵּר.
Hakshev iyov shema-li; hachakesh, ve'anokhi adaber.
Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me; hold thy peace, and I will speak.
32.
אִם-יֵשׁ-מִלִּין הֲשִׁיבֵנִי; דַּבֵּר, כִּי-חָפַצְתִּי צַדְּקֶךָּ.
Im-yesh-millin hashibeni; daber, ki-chafatzti tzaddekekka.
If thou hast any thing to say, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify thee.
33.
אִם-אַיִן, אַתָּה שְׁמַע-לִי; הַחֲרֵשׁ, וַאֲאַלֶּפְךָ חָכְמָה.
im-ayin, attah shema-li; hakharesh, va'alefkha khakhmah.
If not, hearken thou unto me; hold thy peace, and I will teach thee wisdom.
