1.וַיַּעַן, אֱלִיפַז הַתֵּימָנִי; וַיֹּאמַר.vaya'an elifaz hateimani vayomarThen answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said:
2.הֶחָכָם, יַעֲנֶה דַעַת-רוּחַ; וִימַלֵּא קָדִים בִּטְנוֹ.hechakham ya'aneh da'at-ru'ach vimalle kadim bitnoShould a wise man make answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
3.הוֹכֵחַ בְּדָבָר, לֹא יִסְכּוֹן; וּמִלִּים, לֹא-יוֹעִיל בָּם.khochech bedavar lo yiskon umilim lo-yo'il bamShould he reason with unprofitable talk, or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?
4.אַף-אַתָּה, תָּפֵר יִרְאָה; וְתִגְרַע שִׂיחָה, לִפְנֵי-אֵל.af-atah, tafer yir'ah; vetigra sikhah, lifnei-el.Yea, thou doest away with fear, and impairest devotion before God.
5.כִּי יְאַלֵּף עֲוֺנְךָ פִיךָ; וְתִבְחַר, לְשׁוֹן עֲרוּמִים.ki ye'alef avonkha fikha; vetivkhar, leshon arumim.For thine iniquity teacheth thy mouth, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.
6.יַרְשִׁיעֲךָ פִיךָ וְלֹא-אָנִי; וּשְׂפָתֶיךָ, יַעֲנוּ-בָךְ.yarshiyakha fikha velo-ani; usefateykha, ya'anu-vakh.Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; yea, thine own lips testify against thee.
7.הֲרִאישׁוֹן אָדָם, תִּוָּלֵד; וְלִפְנֵי גְבָעוֹת חוֹלָלְתָּ.ha'rishon adam, tivaled; velifnei geva'ot kholalta.Art thou the first man that was born? Or wast thou brought forth before the hills?
8.הַבְסוֹד אֱלוֹהַּ תִּשְׁמָע; וְתִגְרַע אֵלֶיךָ חָכְמָה.habsod eloah tishma; vetigra elekha khakhmah.Dost thou hearken in the council of God? And dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?
9.מַה-יָּדַעְתָּ, וְלֹא נֵדָע; תָּבִין, וְלֹא-עִמָּנוּ הוּא.mah-yadata, velo neda; tavin, velo-imanu hu.What knowest thou, that we know not? What understandest thou, which is not in us?
10.גַּם-שָׂב גַּם-יָשִׁישׁ בָּנוּ-- כַּבִּיר מֵאָבִיךָ יָמִים.gam-sav gam-yashish banu-- kabir me'avikha yamim.With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, much older than thy father.
11.הַמְעַט מִמְּךָ, תַּנְחוּמוֹת אֵל; וְדָבָר, לָאַט עִמָּךְ.ham'at mimekha, tankhumot el; vedavar, lat imakh.Are the consolations of God too small for thee, and the word that dealeth gently with thee?
12.מַה-יִּקָּחֲךָ לִבֶּךָ; וּמַה-יִּרְזְמוּן עֵינֶיךָ.mah-yiqqakhakha libbeka; umah-yirzemun eynekika.Why doth thy heart carry thee away? And why do thine eyes wink?
13.כִּי-תָשִׁיב אֶל-אֵל רוּחֶךָ; וְהֹצֵאתָ מִפִּיךָ מִלִּין.ki-tashiv el-el rukhekha; vehotseta mipfikha millin.That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth.
14.מָה-אֱנוֹשׁ כִּי-יִזְכֶּה; וְכִי-יִצְדַּק, יְלוּד אִשָּׁה.mah-enosh ki-yizkeh; vekhi-yitzdak, yelud ishah.What is man, that he should be clean? And he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15.הֵן בִּקְדֹשָׁו, לֹא יַאֲמִין; וְשָׁמַיִם, לֹא-זַכּוּ בְעֵינָיו.hen bikdoshav, lo ya'amin; veshamayim, lo-zakku ve'einav.Behold, He putteth no trust in His holy ones; yea, the heavens are not clean in His sight.
16.אַף, כִּי-נִתְעָב וְנֶאֱלָח; אִישׁ-שֹׁתֶה כַמַּיִם עַוְלָה.Af, ki-nit'av vene'elakh; ish-shotekh kamayim avlah.How much less one that is abominable and impure, man who drinketh iniquity like water!
17.אֲחַוְךָ שְׁמַע-לִי; וְזֶה-חָזִיתִי, וַאֲסַפֵּרָה.Akhavkha shema-li; veze-khaziti, va'asaperah.I will tell thee, hear thou me; and that which I have seen I will declare--
18.אֲשֶׁר-חֲכָמִים יַגִּידוּ; וְלֹא כִחֲדוּ, מֵאֲבוֹתָם.Asher-khakhamim yagidu; velo khikhadu, me'avotam.Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it;
19.לָהֶם לְבַדָּם, נִתְּנָה הָאָרֶץ; וְלֹא-עָבַר זָר בְּתוֹכָם.Lahem levadam, nit'nah ha'aretz; velo-avar zar betokham.Unto whom alone the land was given, and no stranger passed among them.
20.כָּל-יְמֵי רָשָׁע, הוּא מִתְחוֹלֵל; וּמִסְפַּר שָׁנִים, נִצְפְּנוּ לֶעָרִיץ.kol-yeme rasha, hu mitkholel; umispar shanim, nitzpenu le'aritz.The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor.
21.קוֹל-פְּחָדִים בְּאָזְנָיו; בַּשָּׁלוֹם, שׁוֹדֵד יְבוֹאֶנּוּ.kol-pekhadim be'oznav; bashalom, shoded yevo'ennu.A sound of terrors is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.
22.לֹא-יַאֲמִין שׁוּב, מִנִּי-חֹשֶׁךְ; וצפו וְצָפוּי הוּא אֱלֵי-חָרֶב.lo-ya'amin shuv, minni-khoshek; vetzafu hu elei-kharev.He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.
23.נֹדֵד הוּא לַלֶּחֶם אַיֵּה; יָדַע, כִּי-נָכוֹן בְּיָדוֹ יוֹם-חֹשֶׁךְ.noded hu lalelekhem ayeh; yada, ki-nakhon beyado yom-khoshek.He wandereth abroad for bread: 'Where is it?' He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24.יְבַעֲתֻהוּ, צַר וּמְצוּקָה; תִּתְקְפֵהוּ, כְּמֶלֶךְ עָתִיד לַכִּידוֹר.yva'atuhu, tzar u-metzuqah; titqfehu, ke-melekh 'atid la-kidor.Distress and anguish overwhelm him; they prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
25.כִּי-נָטָה אֶל-אֵל יָדוֹ; וְאֶל-שַׁדַּי, יִתְגַּבָּר.ki-natah el-el yado; ve'el-shadday, yitgabbar.Because he hath stretched out his hand against God, and behaveth himself proudly against the Almighty;
26.יָרוּץ אֵלָיו בְּצַוָּאר; בַּעֲבִי, גַּבֵּי מָגִנָּיו.yarutz elav be-tzavar; ba'avi, gabbei maginav.He runneth upon him with a stiff neck, with the thick bosses of his bucklers.
27.כִּי-כִסָּה פָנָיו בְּחֶלְבּוֹ; וַיַּעַשׂ פִּימָה עֲלֵי-כָסֶל.ki-khissah panav be-helbo; vaya'as pimah 'aley-kasel.Because he hath covered his face with his fatness, and made collops of fat on his loins;
28.וַיִּשְׁכּוֹן, עָרִים נִכְחָדוֹת--בָּתִּים, לֹא-יֵשְׁבוּ לָמוֹ: אֲשֶׁר הִתְעַתְּדוּ לְגַלִּים.vayishkon, arim nikhadot--batim, lo-yeshuvu lamo: asher hit'atdu legallim.And he hath dwelt in desolate cities, in houses which no man would inhabit, which were ready to become heaps.
29.לֹא-יֶעְשַׁר, וְלֹא-יָקוּם חֵילוֹ; וְלֹא-יִטֶּה לָאָרֶץ מִנְלָם.lo-yeshar, velo-yakum kheilo; velo-yitteh la'aretz minlam.He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall their produce bend to the earth.
30.לֹא-יָסוּר, מִנִּי-חֹשֶׁךְ--יֹנַקְתּוֹ, תְּיַבֵּשׁ שַׁלְהָבֶת; וְיָסוּר, בְּרוּחַ פִּיו.lo-yasur, minni-khoshek--yonakto, teyabesh shalhavet; veyasur, beruakh piv.He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of His mouth shall he go away.
31.אַל-יַאֲמֵן בַּשָּׁו נִתְעָה: כִּי-שָׁוְא, תִּהְיֶה תְמוּרָתוֹ.al-ya'amen bashshav nit'ah: ki-shav, tihyeh temurato.Let him not trust in vanity, deceiving himself; for vanity shall be his recompense.
32.בְּלֹא-יוֹמוֹ, תִּמָּלֵא; וְכִפָּתוֹ, לֹא רַעֲנָנָה.belo-yomo timmale vekhipato lo ra'anana.It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be leafy.
33.יַחְמֹס כַּגֶּפֶן בִּסְרוֹ; וְיַשְׁלֵךְ כַּזַּיִת, נִצָּתוֹ.yakhmos kagefen bisro veyashlekh kazayit nitsato.He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
34.כִּי-עֲדַת חָנֵף גַּלְמוּד; וְאֵשׁ, אָכְלָה אָהֳלֵי-שֹׁחַד.ki-'adat khanef galmud ve'esh akhla 'ohalei-shokhad.For the company of the godless shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.
35.הָרֹה עָמָל, וְיָלֹד אָוֶן; וּבִטְנָם, תָּכִין מִרְמָה.haro 'amal veyalod 'aven uvitnam takhin mirmah.They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
