1.
וַיִּסַּע יִשְׂרָאֵל וְכָל-אֲשֶׁר-לוֹ, וַיָּבֹא בְּאֵרָה שָּׁבַע; וַיִּזְבַּח זְבָחִים, לֵאלֹהֵי אָבִיו יִצְחָק.
Vayissa Yisrael vekol-asher-lo, vayavo Be'erah shava; vayizbach zevachim, lelohei aviv Yitzchak.
And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beer-sheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac.
2.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים לְיִשְׂרָאֵל בְּמַרְאֹת הַלַּיְלָה, וַיֹּאמֶר יַעֲקֹב יַעֲקֹב; וַיֹּאמֶר, הִנֵּנִי.
vayomer Elohim leYisrael bemarot halaylah, vayomer Ya'akov Ya'akov; vayomer, hineni.
And God spoke unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said: 'Jacob, Jacob.' And he said: 'Here am I.'
3.
וַיֹּאמֶר, אָנֹכִי הָאֵל אֱלֹהֵי אָבִיךָ; אַל-תִּירָא מֵרְדָה מִצְרַיְמָה, כִּי-לְגוֹי גָּדוֹל אֲשִׂימְךָ שָׁם.
Vayomer, anokhi ha'el Elohaye avikha; al-tira merdah Mitzraymah, ki-legoy gadol ashimkha sham.
And He said: 'I am God, the God of thy father; fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation.
4.
אָנֹכִי, אֵרֵד עִמְּךָ מִצְרַיְמָה, וְאָנֹכִי, אַעַלְךָ גַם-עָלֹה; וְיוֹסֵף, יָשִׁית יָדוֹ עַל-עֵינֶיךָ.
Anokhi ered immekha Mitzraymah ve'anokhi a'alkha gam aloh veYosef yashit yado al eineykha.
I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again; and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.'
5.
וַיָּקָם יַעֲקֹב, מִבְּאֵר שָׁבַע; וַיִּשְׂאוּ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת-יַעֲקֹב אֲבִיהֶם, וְאֶת-טַפָּם וְאֶת-נְשֵׁיהֶם, בָּעֲגָלוֹת, אֲשֶׁר-שָׁלַח פַּרְעֹה לָשֵׂאת אֹתוֹ.
vayakam Ya'akov, mibe'er shava; vayis'u vene-Yisrael et-Ya'akov avikhem, ve'et-tapam ve'et-nesheyhem, ba'agalot, asher-shalakh Par'oh laset oto.
And Jacob rose up from Beer-sheba; and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him.
6.
וַיִּקְחוּ אֶת-מִקְנֵיהֶם, וְאֶת-רְכוּשָׁם אֲשֶׁר רָכְשׁוּ בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנַעַן, וַיָּבֹאוּ, מִצְרָיְמָה: יַעֲקֹב, וְכָל-זַרְעוֹ אִתּוֹ.
vayikhu et-mikneihem, ve'et-rekusham asher rakheshu be'eretz kena'an, vayavo'u, mitzraymah: Ya'akov, vekhol-zar'o itto.
And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob, and all his seed with him;
7.
בָּנָיו וּבְנֵי בָנָיו, אִתּוֹ, בְּנֹתָיו וּבְנוֹת בָּנָיו, וְכָל-זַרְעוֹ--הֵבִיא אִתּוֹ, מִצְרָיְמָה.
banav uve'nei banav, itto, benotav uvnot banav, ve'khol-zar'o--hevi itto, Mitzraymah.
his sons, and his sons' sons with him, his daughters, and his sons' daughters, and all his seed brought he with him into Egypt.
8.
וְאֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת בְּנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל הַבָּאִים מִצְרַיְמָה, יַעֲקֹב וּבָנָיו: בְּכֹר יַעֲקֹב, רְאוּבֵן.
Ve'elleh shemot beney-Yisrael habba'im mitzraymah, Ya'akov uvanav: bekhor Ya'akov, Re'uven.
And these are the names of the children of Israel, who came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob's first-born.
9.
וּבְנֵי, רְאוּבֵן--חֲנוֹךְ וּפַלּוּא, וְחֶצְרֹן וְכַרְמִי.
uv'nei Re'uven, khanokh ufallu, ve'khetsron ve'kharmi.
And the sons of Reuben: Hanoch, and Pallu, and Hezron, and Carmi.
10.
וּבְנֵי שִׁמְעוֹן, יְמוּאֵל וְיָמִין וְאֹהַד--וְיָכִין וְצֹחַר; וְשָׁאוּל, בֶּן-הַכְּנַעֲנִית.
u'vnei Shim'on, Yemu'el veYamin ve'Ohad--veYakhin veTzohar; veSha'ul, ben-haKena'anit.
And the sons of Simeon: Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanitish woman.
11.
וּבְנֵי, לֵוִי--גֵּרְשׁוֹן, קְהָת וּמְרָרִי.
u'vnei levi gershon qehat umerari.
And the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
12.
וּבְנֵי יְהוּדָה, עֵר וְאוֹנָן וְשֵׁלָה--וָפֶרֶץ וָזָרַח; וַיָּמָת עֵר וְאוֹנָן בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנַעַן, וַיִּהְיוּ בְנֵי-פֶרֶץ חֶצְרֹן וְחָמוּל.
u'vnei Yehudah, Er ve'Onan ve'Shelah--va'Peretz va'Zarakh; vayamat Er ve'Onan be'eretz Kena'an, vayihyu vnei-Peretz Khetzron ve'Khamul.
And the sons of Judah: Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Perez, and Zerah; but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.
13.
וּבְנֵי, יִשָּׂשכָר--תּוֹלָע וּפֻוָה, וְיוֹב וְשִׁמְרֹן.
uvnei Yissakhar Tola vuppuvah veyov veshimron.
And the sons of Issachar: Tola, and Puvah, and Iob, and Shimron.
14.
וּבְנֵי, זְבֻלוּן--סֶרֶד וְאֵלוֹן, וְיַחְלְאֵל.
uv'nei, zevulun--sered ve'elon, veyakhl'el.
And the sons of Zebulun: Sered, and Elon, and Jahleel.
15.
אֵלֶּה בְּנֵי לֵאָה, אֲשֶׁר יָלְדָה לְיַעֲקֹב בְּפַדַּן אֲרָם, וְאֵת, דִּינָה בִתּוֹ: כָּל-נֶפֶשׁ בָּנָיו וּבְנוֹתָיו, שְׁלֹשִׁים וְשָׁלֹשׁ.
'elleh benei Le'ah, asher yaldah leYa'akov beFaddan Aram, ve'et, Dinah bitto: kol-nefesh banayv uvenotayv, sheloshim ushalosh.
These are the sons of Leah, whom she bore unto Jacob in Paddan-aram, with his daughter Dinah; all the souls of his sons and his daughters were thirty and three.
16.
וּבְנֵי גָד, צִפְיוֹן וְחַגִּי שׁוּנִי וְאֶצְבֹּן, עֵרִי וַאֲרוֹדִי, וְאַרְאֵלִי.
uvnei Gad, Tzifyon veKhaggi Shuni ve'Etzbon, Eri va'Arodi, ve'Ar'eli.
And the sons of Gad: Ziphion, and Haggi, Shuni, and Ezbon, Eri, and Arodi, and Areli.
17.
וּבְנֵי אָשֵׁר, יִמְנָה וְיִשְׁוָה וְיִשְׁוִי וּבְרִיעָה--וְשֶׂרַח אֲחֹתָם; וּבְנֵי בְרִיעָה, חֶבֶר וּמַלְכִּיאֵל.
Uvnei Asher, Yimnah veYishvah veYishvi uVri'ah--veSerach achotam; uVnei Vri'ah, Chever uMalki'el.
And the sons of Asher: Imnah, and Ishvah, and Ishvi, and Beriah, and Serah their sister; and the sons of Beriah: Heber, and Malchiel.
18.
אֵלֶּה בְּנֵי זִלְפָּה, אֲשֶׁר-נָתַן לָבָן לְלֵאָה בִתּוֹ; וַתֵּלֶד אֶת-אֵלֶּה לְיַעֲקֹב, שֵׁשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה נָפֶשׁ.
'elleh benei Zilpah, asher-natan Lavan leLe'ah bitto; vatteled et-'elleh leYa'akov, shesh esreh nefesh.
These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter, and these she bore unto Jacob, even sixteen souls.
19.
בְּנֵי רָחֵל אֵשֶׁת יַעֲקֹב, יוֹסֵף וּבִנְיָמִן.
bene Rachel e'shet Ya'akov, Yosef uVinyamin.
The sons of Rachel Jacob's wife: Joseph and Benjamin.
20.
וַיִּוָּלֵד לְיוֹסֵף, בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם, אֲשֶׁר יָלְדָה-לּוֹ אָסְנַת, בַּת-פּוֹטִי פֶרַע כֹּהֵן אֹן--אֶת-מְנַשֶּׁה, וְאֶת-אֶפְרָיִם.
vayyovale d le'Yosef, be'eretz Mitzrayim, asher yaldah-llo Osnat, bat-Poti fera kohen On--et-Menasheh, ve'et-Efrayim.
And unto Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath the daughter of Poti-phera priest of On bore unto him.
21.
וּבְנֵי בִנְיָמִן, בֶּלַע וָבֶכֶר וְאַשְׁבֵּל, גֵּרָא וְנַעֲמָן, אֵחִי וָרֹאשׁ; מֻפִּים וְחֻפִּים, וָאָרְדְּ.
uv'nei vinyamin, bela va'vekher ve'ashbel, gera ve'na'aman, ehi va'rosh; muffim ve'huffim, va'arded.
And the sons of Benjamin: Bela, and Becher, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, Ehi, and Rosh, Muppim, and Huppim, and Ard.
22.
אֵלֶּה בְּנֵי רָחֵל, אֲשֶׁר יֻלַּד לְיַעֲקֹב--כָּל-נֶפֶשׁ, אַרְבָּעָה עָשָׂר.
elleh benei Rachel, asher yullad leYa'akov--kol-nefesh, arba'ah asar.
These are the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob; all the souls were fourteen.
23.
וּבְנֵי-דָן, חֻשִׁים.
u'vnei-Dan, Khushim.
And the sons of Dan: Hushim.
24.
וּבְנֵי, נַפְתָּלִי--יַחְצְאֵל וְגוּנִי, וְיֵצֶר וְשִׁלֵּם.
u'venei, naftali--yakhtze'el ve'guni, ve'yetzer ve'shillem.
And the sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem.
25.
אֵלֶּה בְּנֵי בִלְהָה, אֲשֶׁר-נָתַן לָבָן לְרָחֵל בִּתּוֹ; וַתֵּלֶד אֶת-אֵלֶּה לְיַעֲקֹב, כָּל-נֶפֶשׁ שִׁבְעָה.
'elleh benei Bilhah, asher-natan Lavan leRachel bitto; vatteled et-'elleh leYa'akov, kol-nefesh shiv'ah.
These are the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave unto Rachel his daughter, and these she bore unto Jacob; all the souls were seven.
26.
כָּל-הַנֶּפֶשׁ הַבָּאָה לְיַעֲקֹב מִצְרַיְמָה, יֹצְאֵי יְרֵכוֹ, מִלְּבַד, נְשֵׁי בְנֵי-יַעֲקֹב--כָּל-נֶפֶשׁ, שִׁשִּׁים וָשֵׁשׁ.
kol-hanefesh habba'ah leYa'akov mitzraymah, yotz'ei yerekho, millevad, neshei venei-Ya'akov--kol-nefesh, shishim vashesh.
All the souls belonging to Jacob that came into Egypt, that came out of his loins, besides Jacob's sons' wives, all the souls were threescore and six.
27.
וּבְנֵי יוֹסֵף אֲשֶׁר-יֻלַּד-לוֹ בְמִצְרַיִם, נֶפֶשׁ שְׁנָיִם: כָּל-הַנֶּפֶשׁ לְבֵית-יַעֲקֹב הַבָּאָה מִצְרַיְמָה, שִׁבְעִים.
uv'nei Yosef asher-yullad-lo veMitzrayim, nefesh shenayim: kol-hanefesh lebeit-Ya'akov haba'ah Mitzraymah, shiv'im.
And the sons of Joseph, who were born to him in Egypt, were two souls; all the souls of the house of Jacob, that came into Egypt, were threescore and ten.
28.
וְאֶת-יְהוּדָה שָׁלַח לְפָנָיו, אֶל-יוֹסֵף, לְהוֹרֹת לְפָנָיו, גֹּשְׁנָה; וַיָּבֹאוּ, אַרְצָה גֹּשֶׁן.
ve'et-Yehudah shalach lefanav, el-Yosef, lehorot lefanav, goshnah; vayavo'u, artzah Goshen.
And he sent Judah before him unto Joseph, to show the way before him unto Goshen; and they came into the land of Goshen.
29.
וַיֶּאְסֹר יוֹסֵף מֶרְכַּבְתּוֹ, וַיַּעַל לִקְרַאת-יִשְׂרָאֵל אָבִיו גֹּשְׁנָה; וַיֵּרָא אֵלָיו, וַיִּפֹּל עַל-צַוָּארָיו, וַיֵּבְךְּ עַל-צַוָּארָיו, עוֹד.
vay'esor Yosef merkavto, vaya'al likrat-Yisrael aviv Goshnah; vayera elav, vayippol al-tzavvarav, vayevk al-tzavvarav, od.
And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen; and he presented himself unto him, and fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while.
30.
וַיֹּאמֶר יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל-יוֹסֵף, אָמוּתָה הַפָּעַם, אַחֲרֵי רְאוֹתִי אֶת-פָּנֶיךָ, כִּי עוֹדְךָ חָי.
vayomer Yisrael el-Yosef, amutah happa'am, akharei re'oti et-panekha, ki odkha khai.
And Israel said unto Joseph: 'Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, that thou art yet alive.'
31.
וַיֹּאמֶר יוֹסֵף אֶל-אֶחָיו וְאֶל-בֵּית אָבִיו, אֶעֱלֶה וְאַגִּידָה לְפַרְעֹה; וְאֹמְרָה אֵלָיו, אַחַי וּבֵית-אָבִי אֲשֶׁר בְּאֶרֶץ-כְּנַעַן בָּאוּ אֵלָי.
vayomer Yosef el-ehav ve'el beit aviv, e'eleh ve'agidah lefar'oh; ve'omerah elav, ahay uveit-avi asher be'eretz-kena'an ba'u elay.
And Joseph said unto his brethren, and unto his father's house: 'I will go up, and tell Pharaoh, and will say unto him: My brethren, and my father's house, who were in the land of Canaan, are come unto me;
32.
וְהָאֲנָשִׁים רֹעֵי צֹאן, כִּי-אַנְשֵׁי מִקְנֶה הָיוּ; וְצֹאנָם וּבְקָרָם וְכָל-אֲשֶׁר לָהֶם, הֵבִיאוּ.
veha'anashim ro'ei tzon, ki-anshei mikneh hayu; vetzonam uvekaram vekhal-asher lahem, hevi'u.
and the men are shepherds, for they have been keepers of cattle; and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have.
33.
וְהָיָה, כִּי-יִקְרָא לָכֶם פַּרְעֹה; וְאָמַר, מַה-מַּעֲשֵׂיכֶם.
vehaya, ki-yikra lakhem Par'oh; ve'amar, mah-ma'aseykhem.
And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say: What is your occupation?
34.
וַאֲמַרְתֶּם, אַנְשֵׁי מִקְנֶה הָיוּ עֲבָדֶיךָ מִנְּעוּרֵינוּ וְעַד-עַתָּה--גַּם-אֲנַחְנוּ, גַּם-אֲבֹתֵינוּ: בַּעֲבוּר, תֵּשְׁבוּ בְּאֶרֶץ גֹּשֶׁן, כִּי-תוֹעֲבַת מִצְרַיִם, כָּל-רֹעֵה צֹאן.
va'amartem, anshei mikneh hayu avadeykha min'ureinu ve'ad-attah--gam-anachnu, gam-avoteinu: ba'avur, teshvu be'eretz Goshen, ki-to'avat Mitzrayim, kol-ro'eh tzon.
that ye shall say: Thy servants have been keepers of cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and our fathers; that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination unto the Egyptians.'
