1.
וַיִּשָּׂא יַעֲקֹב עֵינָיו, וַיַּרְא וְהִנֵּה עֵשָׂו בָּא, וְעִמּוֹ, אַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת אִישׁ; וַיַּחַץ אֶת-הַיְלָדִים, עַל-לֵאָה וְעַל-רָחֵל, וְעַל, שְׁתֵּי הַשְּׁפָחוֹת.
vayissa Ya'akov enav, vayyar vehinneh Esav ba, ve'immo, arba me'ot ish; vayyachts et-hayeladim, al-Le'ah ve'al-Rachel, ve'al, shetei hashpachot.
And Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids.
2.
וַיָּשֶׂם אֶת-הַשְּׁפָחוֹת וְאֶת-יַלְדֵיהֶן, רִאשֹׁנָה; וְאֶת-לֵאָה וִילָדֶיהָ אַחֲרֹנִים, וְאֶת-רָחֵל וְאֶת-יוֹסֵף אַחֲרֹנִים.
vayasem et-hashfakhot ve'et-yaldeihen, rishonah; ve'et-Le'ah viladeiha akharonim, ve'et-Rachel ve'et-Yosef akharonim.
And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost.

וְהוּא, עָבַר לִפְנֵיהֶם; וַיִּשְׁתַּחוּ אַרְצָה שֶׁבַע פְּעָמִים, עַד-גִּשְׁתּוֹ עַד-אָחִיו.
ve'hu 'avar lifnehem vayishtachu artza sheva pe'amim ad gishto ad achiv.
And he himself passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
4.
וַיָּרָץ עֵשָׂו לִקְרָאתוֹ וַיְחַבְּקֵהוּ, וַיִּפֹּל עַל-צַוָּארָו וַיִּשָּׁקֵהוּ; וַיִּבְכּוּ.
vayaratz Esav likrato vaykhabgekehu, vayippol al-tzavaro vayyishakehu; vayibku.
And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him; and they wept.

וַיִּשָּׂא אֶת-עֵינָיו, וַיַּרְא אֶת-הַנָּשִׁים וְאֶת-הַיְלָדִים, וַיֹּאמֶר, מִי-אֵלֶּה לָּךְ; וַיֹּאמַר--הַיְלָדִים, אֲשֶׁר-חָנַן אֱלֹהִים אֶת-עַבְדֶּךָ.
Vayissa et-enayim, vayra et-hanashim ve'et-hayeladim, vayomer, mi-elle lakh; vayomer--hayeladim, asher-khanan Elohim et-avdekha.
And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said: 'Who are these with thee?' And he said: 'The children whom God hath graciously given thy servant.'
6.
וַתִּגַּשְׁןָ הַשְּׁפָחוֹת הֵנָּה וְיַלְדֵיהֶן, וַתִּשְׁתַּחֲוֶיןָ.
vattigashna hashfachot hennah veyaldehen, vattishtachaveina.
Then the handmaids came near, they and their children, and they bowed down.
7.
וַתִּגַּשׁ גַּם-לֵאָה וִילָדֶיהָ, וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ; וְאַחַר, נִגַּשׁ יוֹסֵף וְרָחֵל--וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ.
vattigash gam-le'ah vילָדֶיהָ, vayishtakhavu; ve'akhar, nigash yoseף ve'rakhel--vayishtakhavu.
And Leah also and her children came near, and bowed down; and after came Joseph near and Rachel, and they bowed down.
8.
וַיֹּאמֶר, מִי לְךָ כָּל-הַמַּחֲנֶה הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר פָּגָשְׁתִּי; וַיֹּאמֶר, לִמְצֹא-חֵן בְּעֵינֵי אֲדֹנִי.
vayomer, mi lekha kol-hamachaneh hazzeh asher pagashti; vayomer, limtzo-chen be'einei adoni.
And he said: 'What meanest thou by all this camp which I met?' And he said: 'To find favour in the sight of my lord.'
9.
וַיֹּאמֶר עֵשָׂו, יֶשׁ-לִי רָב; אָחִי, יְהִי לְךָ אֲשֶׁר-לָךְ.
Vayomer Esav, yesh-li rav; achi, yehi lekha asher-lakh.
And Esau said: 'I have enough; my brother, let that which thou hast be thine.'
10.
וַיֹּאמֶר יַעֲקֹב, אַל-נָא אִם-נָא מָצָאתִי חֵן בְּעֵינֶיךָ, וְלָקַחְתָּ מִנְחָתִי, מִיָּדִי: כִּי עַל-כֵּן רָאִיתִי פָנֶיךָ, כִּרְאֹת פְּנֵי אֱלֹהִים--וַתִּרְצֵנִי.
vayomer Ya'akov, al-na im-na matzati khen be'einekha, ve'la lakhta minhati, miyadi: ki al-ken ra'iti faneikha, kir'ot penei Elohim--vatirtzeni.
And Jacob said: 'Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found favour in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand; forasmuch as I have seen thy face, as one seeth the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me.
11.
קַח-נָא אֶת-בִּרְכָתִי אֲשֶׁר הֻבָאת לָךְ, כִּי-חַנַּנִי אֱלֹהִים וְכִי יֶשׁ-לִי-כֹל; וַיִּפְצַר-בּוֹ, וַיִּקָּח.
kakh-na et-birkhati asher hubat lakh, ki-khannani Elohim vekhi yesh-li-khol; vayiftsar-bo, vayikkakh.
Take, I pray thee, my gift that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough.' And he urged him, and he took it.
12.
וַיֹּאמֶר, נִסְעָה וְנֵלֵכָה; וְאֵלְכָה, לְנֶגְדֶּךָ.
Vayomer, nis'ah venelekha; ve'elekha, lenegdekha.
And he said: 'Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee.'
13.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו, אֲדֹנִי יֹדֵעַ כִּי-הַיְלָדִים רַכִּים, וְהַצֹּאן וְהַבָּקָר, עָלוֹת עָלָי; וּדְפָקוּם יוֹם אֶחָד, וָמֵתוּ כָּל-הַצֹּאן.
Vayomer elav, adonai yodea ki-hayladim rakkim, vehatzon vehabakar, alot alay; udefakum yom echad, vametu kol-hatzon.
And he said unto him: 'My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and that the flocks and herds giving suck are a care to me; and if they overdrive them one day, all the flocks will die.
14.
יַעֲבָר-נָא אֲדֹנִי, לִפְנֵי עַבְדּוֹ; וַאֲנִי אֶתְנָהֲלָה לְאִטִּי, לְרֶגֶל הַמְּלָאכָה אֲשֶׁר-לְפָנַי וּלְרֶגֶל הַיְלָדִים, עַד אֲשֶׁר-אָבֹא אֶל-אֲדֹנִי, שֵׂעִירָה.
ya'avar-na adoni, lifnei avdo; va'ani etnahalah le'itti, leregel hamlekhah asher-lefanai uleregel hayeladim, ad asher-avo el-adoni, se'irah.
Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant; and I will journey on gently, according to the pace of the cattle that are before me and according to the pace of the children, until I come unto my lord unto Seir.'
15.
וַיֹּאמֶר עֵשָׂו--אַצִּיגָה-נָּא עִמְּךָ, מִן-הָעָם אֲשֶׁר אִתִּי; וַיֹּאמֶר לָמָּה זֶּה, אֶמְצָא-חֵן בְּעֵינֵי אֲדֹנִי.
vayomer Esav--atztigah-na immakha, min-ha'am asher itti; vayomer lamma zeh, emtsa-khen be'enei Adoni.
And Esau said: 'Let me now leave with thee some of the folk that are with me.' And he said: 'What needeth it? let me find favour in the sight of my lord.'
16.
וַיָּשָׁב בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא עֵשָׂו לְדַרְכּוֹ, שֵׂעִירָה.
vayashav bayyom hahu 'Esav ledarko, Se'irah.
So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir.
17.
וְיַעֲקֹב נָסַע סֻכֹּתָה, וַיִּבֶן לוֹ בָּיִת; וּלְמִקְנֵהוּ עָשָׂה סֻכֹּת, עַל-כֵּן קָרָא שֵׁם-הַמָּקוֹם סֻכּוֹת.
Ve'ya'akov nasa sukkotah, vayiven lo bayit; ulemiknehu asah sukkot, al-ken kara shem-hamakom sukkot.
And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him a house, and made booths for his cattle. Therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.
18.
וַיָּבֹא יַעֲקֹב שָׁלֵם עִיר שְׁכֶם, אֲשֶׁר בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנַעַן, בְּבֹאוֹ, מִפַּדַּן אֲרָם; וַיִּחַן, אֶת-פְּנֵי הָעִיר.
vayavo Ya'akov shalem ‘ir shekhem, asher be'eretz kena'an, bevo'o, mipaddan aram; vayichan, et-penei ha'ir.
And Jacob came in peace to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan-aram; and encamped before the city.
19.
וַיִּקֶן אֶת-חֶלְקַת הַשָּׂדֶה, אֲשֶׁר נָטָה-שָׁם אָהֳלוֹ, מִיַּד בְּנֵי-חֲמוֹר, אֲבִי שְׁכֶם--בְּמֵאָה, קְשִׂיטָה.
vayiken et-helkat hashadeh, asher nata-sham oholo, miyyad benei-khamor, avi shekhem--beme'ah, keshitah.
And he bought the parcel of ground, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for a hundred pieces of money.
20.
וַיַּצֶּב-שָׁם, מִזְבֵּחַ; וַיִּקְרָא-לוֹ--אֵל, אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל.
vayatzeb-sham, mizbe'ach; vayikra-lo--el, Elohei Yisrael.
And he erected there an altar, and called it El-elohe-Israel.
