1.
וַתֵּרֶא רָחֵל, כִּי לֹא יָלְדָה לְיַעֲקֹב, וַתְּקַנֵּא רָחֵל, בַּאֲחֹתָהּ; וַתֹּאמֶר אֶל-יַעֲקֹב הָבָה-לִּי בָנִים, וְאִם-אַיִן מֵתָה אָנֹכִי.
Vatere Rachel, ki lo yaledah leYa'akov, vatkena Rachel, ba'achotah; vatomer el-Ya'akov havah-li vanim, ve'im-ayin metah anochi.
And when Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and she said unto Jacob: 'Give me children, or else I die.'
2.
וַיִּחַר-אַף יַעֲקֹב, בְּרָחֵל; וַיֹּאמֶר, הֲתַחַת אֱלֹהִים אָנֹכִי, אֲשֶׁר-מָנַע מִמֵּךְ, פְּרִי-בָטֶן.
Vayichar-af Ya'akov, be'Rachel; vayomer, hatachat Elohim anochi, asher-mana mimech, peri-vaten.
And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel; and he said: 'Am I in God's stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?'
3.
וַתֹּאמֶר, הִנֵּה אֲמָתִי בִלְהָה בֹּא אֵלֶיהָ; וְתֵלֵד, עַל-בִּרְכַּי, וְאִבָּנֶה גַם-אָנֹכִי, מִמֶּנָּה.
vato'mer, hinneh amati Bilhah bo' eleiha; veteled, al-birkay, ve'ibaneh gam-anokhi, mimennah.
And she said: 'Behold my maid Bilhah, go in unto her; that she may bear upon my knees, and I also may be builded up through her.'
4.
וַתִּתֶּן-לוֹ אֶת-בִּלְהָה שִׁפְחָתָהּ, לְאִשָּׁה; וַיָּבֹא אֵלֶיהָ, יַעֲקֹב.
vattitten-lo et-Bilhah shifchatah, le'ishah; vayavo eleiha, Ya'akov.
And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid to wife; and Jacob went in unto her.
5.
וַתַּהַר בִּלְהָה, וַתֵּלֶד לְיַעֲקֹב בֵּן.
Vattahar Bilhah, vatteled leYa'akov ben.
And Bilhah conceived, and bore Jacob a son.
6.
וַתֹּאמֶר רָחֵל, דָּנַנִּי אֱלֹהִים, וְגַם שָׁמַע בְּקֹלִי, וַיִּתֶּן-לִי בֵּן; עַל-כֵּן קָרְאָה שְׁמוֹ, דָּן.
Vato'mer Rachel, dananni Elohim, vegam shama beqoli, vayitten-li ben; al-ken qare'ah shemo, Dan.
And Rachel said: 'God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son.' Therefore called she his name Dan.
7.
וַתַּהַר עוֹד--וַתֵּלֶד, בִּלְהָה שִׁפְחַת רָחֵל: בֵּן שֵׁנִי, לְיַעֲקֹב.
Vatahar od, vatéled Bilhah shifchat Rachel, ben sheni leYa'akov.
And Bilhah Rachel's handmaid conceived again, and bore Jacob a second son.
8.
וַתֹּאמֶר רָחֵל, נַפְתּוּלֵי אֱלֹהִים נִפְתַּלְתִּי עִם-אֲחֹתִי--גַּם-יָכֹלְתִּי; וַתִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ, נַפְתָּלִי.
vatto'mer Rachel, naftulei Elohim niftalti im-achoti--gam-yacholti; vattiqra shemo, Naftali.
And Rachel said: 'With mighty wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and have prevailed.' And she called his name Naphtali.
9.
וַתֵּרֶא לֵאָה, כִּי עָמְדָה מִלֶּדֶת; וַתִּקַּח אֶת-זִלְפָּה שִׁפְחָתָהּ, וַתִּתֵּן אֹתָהּ לְיַעֲקֹב לְאִשָּׁה.
Vatter'eh Leah, ki amdah milledet; vattiqqach et-Zilpah shifchatah, vattitten otah leYa'akov le'ishah.
When Leah saw that she had left off bearing, she took Zilpah her handmaid, and gave her to Jacob to wife.
10.
וַתֵּלֶד, זִלְפָּה שִׁפְחַת לֵאָה--לְיַעֲקֹב בֵּן.
Vateled Zilpah shifchat Leah leYa'akov ben.
And Zilpah Leah's handmaid bore Jacob a son.
11.
וַתֹּאמֶר לֵאָה, בגד בָּא גָד; וַתִּקְרָא אֶת-שְׁמוֹ, גָּד.
Vato'mer Leah, bagad ba gad; vatikra et-shemo, gad.
And Leah said: 'Fortune is come!' And she called his name Gad.
12.
וַתֵּלֶד, זִלְפָּה שִׁפְחַת לֵאָה, בֵּן שֵׁנִי, לְיַעֲקֹב.
vatteled Zilpah shifchat Leah ben sheni leYa'akov.
And Zilpah Leah's handmaid bore Jacob a second son.
13.
וַתֹּאמֶר לֵאָה--בְּאָשְׁרִי, כִּי אִשְּׁרוּנִי בָּנוֹת; וַתִּקְרָא אֶת-שְׁמוֹ, אָשֵׁר.
vatto'mer le'ah be'ashri ki ish'runi banot vatikra et-shemo asher
And Leah said: 'Happy am I! for the daughters will call me happy.' And she called his name Asher.
14.
וַיֵּלֶךְ רְאוּבֵן בִּימֵי קְצִיר-חִטִּים, וַיִּמְצָא דוּדָאִים בַּשָּׂדֶה, וַיָּבֵא אֹתָם, אֶל-לֵאָה אִמּוֹ; וַתֹּאמֶר רָחֵל, אֶל-לֵאָה, תְּנִי-נָא לִי, מִדּוּדָאֵי בְּנֵךְ.
vayelekh Reuven bimei katzir-chitim, vayimtza dudaim basadeh, vayavei otam, el-Leah imo; v'tomer Rachel, el-Leah, t'ni-na li, midudaei v'nekh.
And Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them unto his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah: 'Give me, I pray thee, of thy son's mandrakes.'
15.
וַתֹּאמֶר לָהּ, הַמְעַט קַחְתֵּךְ אֶת-אִישִׁי, וְלָקַחַת, גַּם אֶת-דּוּדָאֵי בְּנִי; וַתֹּאמֶר רָחֵל, לָכֵן יִשְׁכַּב עִמָּךְ הַלַּיְלָה, תַּחַת, דּוּדָאֵי בְנֵךְ.
vato'mer lah, ham'at kachtech et-ishi, vela'achat, gam et-duda'ei beni; vato'mer Rachel, lachen yishkav imach halayla, tachat, duda'ei venech.
And she said unto her: 'Is it a small matter that thou hast taken away my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son's mandrakes also?' And Rachel said: 'Therefore he shall lie with thee to-night for thy son's mandrakes.'
16.
וַיָּבֹא יַעֲקֹב מִן-הַשָּׂדֶה, בָּעֶרֶב, וַתֵּצֵא לֵאָה לִקְרָאתוֹ וַתֹּאמֶר אֵלַי תָּבוֹא, כִּי שָׂכֹר שְׂכַרְתִּיךָ בְּדוּדָאֵי בְּנִי; וַיִּשְׁכַּב עִמָּהּ, בַּלַּיְלָה הוּא.
vayavo ya'akov min-hasadeh ba'erev vatevetzei le'ah likrato vato'mer elai tavo ki sachor sacharticha bedudai beni vayishkav imah balaylah hu
And Jacob came from the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said: 'Thou must come in unto me; for I have surely hired thee with my son's mandrakes.' And he lay with her that night.
17.
וַיִּשְׁמַע אֱלֹהִים, אֶל-לֵאָה; וַתַּהַר וַתֵּלֶד לְיַעֲקֹב, בֵּן חֲמִישִׁי.
Vayishma Elohim, el-Le'ah; vatahar vateled leYa'akov, ben chamishi.
And God hearkened unto Leah, and she conceived, and bore Jacob a fifth son.
18.
וַתֹּאמֶר לֵאָה, נָתַן אֱלֹהִים שְׂכָרִי, אֲשֶׁר-נָתַתִּי שִׁפְחָתִי, לְאִישִׁי; וַתִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ, יִשָּׂשכָר.
Vatto'mer Le'ah, natan Elohim s'chari, asher-natatti shifchati, l'ishi; vattiqra sh'mo, Yissachar.
And Leah said: 'God hath given me my hire, because I gave my handmaid to my husband. And she called his name Issachar.
19.
וַתַּהַר עוֹד לֵאָה, וַתֵּלֶד בֵּן-שִׁשִּׁי לְיַעֲקֹב.
Vattahar od Leah, vatteled ben-shishi leYa'akov.
And Leah conceived again, and bore a sixth son to Jacob.
20.
וַתֹּאמֶר לֵאָה, זְבָדַנִי אֱלֹהִים אֹתִי זֵבֶד טוֹב--הַפַּעַם יִזְבְּלֵנִי אִישִׁי, כִּי-יָלַדְתִּי לוֹ שִׁשָּׁה בָנִים; וַתִּקְרָא אֶת-שְׁמוֹ, זְבֻלוּן.
Vatto'mer Le'ah, zevadani Elohim oti zeved tov--happa'am yizbeleni ishi, ki-yaladti lo shishah vanim; vattiqra et-shemo, Zevulun.
And Leah said: 'God hath endowed me with a good dowry; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have borne him six sons.' And she called his name Zebulun.
21.
וְאַחַר, יָלְדָה בַּת; וַתִּקְרָא אֶת-שְׁמָהּ, דִּינָה.
ve'achar, yaldah bat; vattiqra et-shemah, Dinah.
And afterwards she bore a daughter, and called her name Dinah.
22.
וַיִּזְכֹּר אֱלֹהִים, אֶת-רָחֵל; וַיִּשְׁמַע אֵלֶיהָ אֱלֹהִים, וַיִּפְתַּח אֶת-רַחְמָהּ.
Vayizkor Elohim, et-Rachel; vayishma eleiha Elohim, vayiftach et-rachmah.
And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb.
23.
וַתַּהַר, וַתֵּלֶד בֵּן; וַתֹּאמֶר, אָסַף אֱלֹהִים אֶת-חֶרְפָּתִי.
Vattahar, vatteled ben; vatto'mer, asaf Elohim et-cherpati.
And she conceived, and bore a son, and said: 'God hath taken away my reproach.'
24.
וַתִּקְרָא אֶת-שְׁמוֹ יוֹסֵף, לֵאמֹר: יֹסֵף יְהוָה לִי, בֵּן אַחֵר.
vattiqra et-shemo Yosef, lemor: yosef Adonai li, ben acher.
And she called his name Joseph, saying: 'The LORD add to me another son.'
25.
וַיְהִי, כַּאֲשֶׁר יָלְדָה רָחֵל אֶת-יוֹסֵף; וַיֹּאמֶר יַעֲקֹב, אֶל-לָבָן, שַׁלְּחֵנִי וְאֵלְכָה, אֶל-מְקוֹמִי וּלְאַרְצִי.
Vayehi, ka'asher yaldah Rachel et-Yosef; vayomer Ya'akov, el-Lavan, shalcheni ve'elechah, el-mekomi ule'artzi.
And it came to pass, when Rachel had borne Joseph, that Jacob said unto Laban: 'Send me away, that I may go unto mine own place, and to my country.
26.
תְּנָה אֶת-נָשַׁי וְאֶת-יְלָדַי, אֲשֶׁר עָבַדְתִּי אֹתְךָ בָּהֵן--וְאֵלֵכָה: כִּי אַתָּה יָדַעְתָּ, אֶת-עֲבֹדָתִי אֲשֶׁר עֲבַדְתִּיךָ.
Tena et-nashai ve'et-yeladai, asher avadti otcha bahen--ve'elecha: ki atah yada'ta, et-avodati asher avadticha.
Give me my wives and my children for whom I have served thee, and let me go; for thou knowest my service wherewith I have served thee.'
27.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו לָבָן, אִם-נָא מָצָאתִי חֵן בְּעֵינֶיךָ; נִחַשְׁתִּי, וַיְבָרְכֵנִי יְהוָה בִּגְלָלֶךָ.
Vayomer elav Lavan, im-na matzati chen be'eineicha; nichashti, vayevarecheni Adonai biglalecha.
And Laban said unto him: 'If now I have found favour in thine eyes--I have observed the signs, and the LORD hath blessed me for thy sake.'
28.
וַיֹּאמַר: נָקְבָה שְׂכָרְךָ עָלַי, וְאֶתֵּנָה.
Vayomer: nakvah sekharekha alai, ve'etenah.
And he said: 'Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it.'
29.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו--אַתָּה יָדַעְתָּ, אֵת אֲשֶׁר עֲבַדְתִּיךָ; וְאֵת אֲשֶׁר-הָיָה מִקְנְךָ, אִתִּי.
Vayomer elav, attah yada'ta, et asher avadtikha; ve'et asher-hayah miknekha, itti.
And he said unto him: 'Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how thy cattle have fared with me.
30.
כִּי מְעַט אֲשֶׁר-הָיָה לְךָ לְפָנַי, וַיִּפְרֹץ לָרֹב, וַיְבָרֶךְ יְהוָה אֹתְךָ, לְרַגְלִי; וְעַתָּה, מָתַי אֶעֱשֶׂה גַם-אָנֹכִי--לְבֵיתִי.
Ki me'at asher-hayah lecha lefanai, vayifrotz larov, vayevarech YHWH otcha, leragli; ve'attah, matai e'eseh gam-anochi--leveiti.
For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it hath increased abundantly; and the LORD hath blessed thee whithersoever I turned. And now when shall I provide for mine own house also?'
31.
וַיֹּאמֶר, מָה אֶתֶּן-לָךְ; וַיֹּאמֶר יַעֲקֹב, לֹא-תִתֶּן-לִי מְאוּמָה--אִם-תַּעֲשֶׂה-לִּי הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה, אָשׁוּבָה אֶרְעֶה צֹאנְךָ אֶשְׁמֹר.
Vayomer, mah etten-lach; vayomer Ya'akov, lo-titten-li me'umah--im-ta'aseh-li hadavar hazzeh, ashuvah er'eh tsoncha eshmor.
And he said: 'What shall I give thee?' And Jacob said: 'Thou shalt not give me aught; if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed thy flock and keep it.
32.
אֶעֱבֹר בְּכָל-צֹאנְךָ הַיּוֹם, הָסֵר מִשָּׁם כָּל-שֶׂה נָקֹד וְטָלוּא וְכָל-שֶׂה-חוּם בַּכְּשָׂבִים, וְטָלוּא וְנָקֹד, בָּעִזִּים; וְהָיָה, שְׂכָרִי.
e'evor bechol-tzoncha hayom, haser misham kol-seh nakod vetalu vechol-seh-chum bakesavim, vetalu venakod, ba'izzim; vehayah, sechari.
I will pass through all thy flock to-day, removing from thence every speckled and spotted one, and every dark one among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats; and of such shall be my hire.
33.
וְעָנְתָה-בִּי צִדְקָתִי בְּיוֹם מָחָר, כִּי-תָבוֹא עַל-שְׂכָרִי לְפָנֶיךָ: כֹּל אֲשֶׁר-אֵינֶנּוּ נָקֹד וְטָלוּא בָּעִזִּים, וְחוּם בַּכְּשָׂבִים--גָּנוּב הוּא, אִתִּי.
ve'anetah-bi tzidkati beyom machar, ki-tavo al-sechari lefaneicha: kol asher-einennu nakod vetalu ba'izzim, vechum bachesavim--ganuv hu, itti.
So shall my righteousness witness against me hereafter, when thou shalt come to look over my hire that is before thee: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and dark among the sheep, that if found with me shall be counted stolen.'
34.
וַיֹּאמֶר לָבָן, הֵן: לוּ, יְהִי כִדְבָרֶךָ.
Vayomer Lavan, hen: lu, yehi kidvarecha.
And Laban said: 'Behold, would it might be according to thy word.'
35.
וַיָּסַר בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא אֶת-הַתְּיָשִׁים הָעֲקֻדִּים וְהַטְּלֻאִים, וְאֵת כָּל-הָעִזִּים הַנְּקֻדּוֹת וְהַטְּלֻאֹת, כֹּל אֲשֶׁר-לָבָן בּוֹ, וְכָל-חוּם בַּכְּשָׂבִים; וַיִּתֵּן, בְּיַד-בָּנָיו.
Vayasar bayom hahu et-hat'yashim ha'akudim vahat'lu'im, ve'et kol-ha'izzim han'kudot vahat'lu'ot, kol asher-lavan bo, vechol-chum bak'savim; vayitten, beyad-banav.
And he removed that day the he-goats that were streaked and spotted, and all the she-goats that were speckled and spotted, every one that had white in it, and all the dark ones among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons.
36.
וַיָּשֶׂם, דֶּרֶךְ שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים, בֵּינוֹ, וּבֵין יַעֲקֹב; וְיַעֲקֹב, רֹעֶה אֶת-צֹאן לָבָן--הַנּוֹתָרֹת.
vayyasem, derekh sheloshet yamim, beino, uvein Ya'akov; veYa'akov, ro'eh et-tson Lavan--hannotarot.
And he set three days' journey betwixt himself and Jacob. And Jacob fed the rest of Laban's flocks.
37.
וַיִּקַּח-לוֹ יַעֲקֹב, מַקַּל לִבְנֶה לַח--וְלוּז וְעַרְמוֹן; וַיְפַצֵּל בָּהֵן, פְּצָלוֹת לְבָנוֹת--מַחְשֹׂף הַלָּבָן, אֲשֶׁר עַל-הַמַּקְלוֹת.
Vayikach-lo Ya'akov, makal livneh lach--ve'luz ve'armon; vayefatzel bahen, petzalot levanot--machsof halavan, asher al-hamaklot.
And Jacob took him rods of fresh poplar, and of the almond and of the plane-tree; and peeled white streaks in them, making the white appear which was in the rods.
38.
וַיַּצֵּג, אֶת-הַמַּקְלוֹת אֲשֶׁר פִּצֵּל, בָּרְהָטִים, בְּשִׁקְתוֹת הַמָּיִם--אֲשֶׁר תָּבֹאןָ הַצֹּאן לִשְׁתּוֹת לְנֹכַח הַצֹּאן, וַיֵּחַמְנָה בְּבֹאָן לִשְׁתּוֹת.
vayyatseg et-hammaklot asher pitsel, barehatim, beshiktot hammayim--asher tavo'na hatson lishtot lenokhah hatson, vayyechamnah bevo'an lishtot.
And he set the rods which he had peeled over against the flocks in the gutters in the watering-troughs where the flocks came to drink; and they conceived when they came to drink.
39.
וַיֶּחֱמוּ הַצֹּאן, אֶל-הַמַּקְלוֹת; וַתֵּלַדְןָ הַצֹּאן, עֲקֻדִּים נְקֻדִּים וּטְלֻאִים.
vayyechemu hatzon, el-hammaklot; vatteladna hatzon, akuddim nekuddim utlu'im.
And the flocks conceived at the sight of the rods, and the flocks brought forth streaked, speckled, and spotted.
40.
וְהַכְּשָׂבִים, הִפְרִיד יַעֲקֹב, וַיִּתֵּן פְּנֵי הַצֹּאן אֶל-עָקֹד וְכָל-חוּם, בְּצֹאן לָבָן; וַיָּשֶׁת-לוֹ עֲדָרִים לְבַדּוֹ, וְלֹא שָׁתָם עַל-צֹאן לָבָן.
ve'hak'savim, hifrid Ya'akov, vayiten penei hatzon el-akod vechol-chum, betzon Lavan; vayashet-lo adarim levado, velo shatam al-tzon Lavan.
And Jacob separated the lambs--he also set the faces of the flocks toward the streaked and all the dark in the flock of Laban--and put his own droves apart, and put them not unto Laban's flock.
41.
וְהָיָה, בְּכָל-יַחֵם הַצֹּאן הַמְקֻשָּׁרוֹת, וְשָׂם יַעֲקֹב אֶת-הַמַּקְלוֹת לְעֵינֵי הַצֹּאן, בָּרְהָטִים--לְיַחְמֵנָּה, בַּמַּקְלוֹת.
ve'hayah, be'khol-yachem hatzon ha'mekusharot, ve'sam Ya'akov et-hamaklot le'einei hatzon, barehatim--le'yachmenah, bamaklot.
And it came to pass, whensoever the stronger of the flock did conceive, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the flock in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods;
42.
וּבְהַעֲטִיף הַצֹּאן, לֹא יָשִׂים; וְהָיָה הָעֲטֻפִים לְלָבָן, וְהַקְּשֻׁרִים לְיַעֲקֹב.
uveha'atif hatzon, lo yasim; vehayah ha'atufim lelavan, vehaqeshurim leya'aqov.
but when the flock were feeble, he put them not in; so the feebler were Laban's, and the stronger Jacob's.
43.
וַיִּפְרֹץ הָאִישׁ, מְאֹד מְאֹד; וַיְהִי-לוֹ, צֹאן רַבּוֹת, וּשְׁפָחוֹת וַעֲבָדִים, וּגְמַלִּים וַחֲמֹרִים.
vayifrotz ha'ish, me'od me'od; vayehi-lo, tzon rabbot, ushfachot va'avadim, ugmallim vachamorim.
And the man increased exceedingly, and had large flocks, and maid-servants and men-servants, and camels and asses.
