1.
וַיִּשָּׂא יַעֲקֹב, רַגְלָיו; וַיֵּלֶךְ, אַרְצָה בְנֵי-קֶדֶם.
Vayisa Ya'akov raglav; vayelech, artzah v'nei-kedem.
Then Jacob went on his journey, and came to the land of the children of the east.
2.
וַיַּרְא וְהִנֵּה בְאֵר בַּשָּׂדֶה, וְהִנֵּה-שָׁם שְׁלֹשָׁה עֶדְרֵי-צֹאן רֹבְצִים עָלֶיהָ--כִּי מִן-הַבְּאֵר הַהִוא, יַשְׁקוּ הָעֲדָרִים; וְהָאֶבֶן גְּדֹלָה, עַל-פִּי הַבְּאֵר.
Vayar ve'hineh be'er basadeh, ve'hineh-sham sheloshah edrei-tson rovtsim aleiha--ki min-habe'er hahi, yashku ha'adarim; veha'even gedolah, al-pi habe'er.
And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, three flocks of sheep lying there by it.--For out of that well they watered the flocks. And the stone upon the well's mouth was great.
3.
וְנֶאֶסְפוּ-שָׁמָּה כָל-הָעֲדָרִים, וְגָלְלוּ אֶת-הָאֶבֶן מֵעַל פִּי הַבְּאֵר, וְהִשְׁקוּ, אֶת-הַצֹּאן; וְהֵשִׁיבוּ אֶת-הָאֶבֶן עַל-פִּי הַבְּאֵר, לִמְקֹמָהּ.
ve'ne'esfu-shammah kol-ha'adarim, ve'gal'lu et-ha'even me'al pi ha'be'er, ve'hishku, et-hatzon; ve'heshivu et-ha'even al-pi ha'be'er, limkomah.
And thither were all the flocks gathered; and they rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone back upon the well's mouth in its place.--
4.
וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם יַעֲקֹב, אַחַי מֵאַיִן אַתֶּם; וַיֹּאמְרוּ, מֵחָרָן אֲנָחְנוּ.
Vayomer lahem Ya'akov, achai me'ayin atem; vayomeru, meCharan anachnu.
And Jacob said unto them: 'My brethren, whence are ye?' And they said: 'Of Haran are we.'
5.
וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם, הַיְדַעְתֶּם אֶת-לָבָן בֶּן-נָחוֹר; וַיֹּאמְרוּ, יָדָעְנוּ.
Vayomer lahem, hayeda'tem et-Lavan ben-Nachor; vayomeru, yada'nu.
And he said unto them: 'Know ye Laban the son of Nahor?' And they said: 'We know him.'
6.
וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם, הֲשָׁלוֹם לוֹ; וַיֹּאמְרוּ שָׁלוֹם--וְהִנֵּה רָחֵל בִּתּוֹ, בָּאָה עִם-הַצֹּאן.
Vayomer lahem, hashalom lo; vayomeru shalom--vehineh Rachel bito, ba'ah im-hatzon.
And he said unto them: 'Is it well with him?' And they said: 'It is well; and, behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep.'
7.
וַיֹּאמֶר, הֵן עוֹד הַיּוֹם גָּדוֹל--לֹא-עֵת, הֵאָסֵף הַמִּקְנֶה; הַשְׁקוּ הַצֹּאן, וּלְכוּ רְעוּ.
Vayomer, hen od hayom gadol--lo-et, he'asef hamikneh; hashku hatzon, ulechu re'u.
And he said: 'Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together; water ye the sheep, and go and feed them.'
8.
וַיֹּאמְרוּ, לֹא נוּכַל, עַד אֲשֶׁר יֵאָסְפוּ כָּל-הָעֲדָרִים, וְגָלְלוּ אֶת-הָאֶבֶן מֵעַל פִּי הַבְּאֵר; וְהִשְׁקִינוּ, הַצֹּאן.
Vayomeru, lo nuchal, ad asher ye'asfu kol-ha'adarim, vegalelu et-ha'even me'al pi habe'er; vehishkinu, hatzon.
And they said: 'We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and they roll the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep.'
9.
עוֹדֶנּוּ, מְדַבֵּר עִמָּם; וְרָחֵל בָּאָה, עִם-הַצֹּאן אֲשֶׁר לְאָבִיהָ--כִּי רֹעָה, הִוא.
Odennu, medaber immam; verachel ba'ah, im-hatzon asher le'aviha--ki ro'ah, hi.
While he was yet speaking with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep; for she tended them.
10.
וַיְהִי כַּאֲשֶׁר רָאָה יַעֲקֹב אֶת-רָחֵל, בַּת-לָבָן אֲחִי אִמּוֹ, וְאֶת-צֹאן לָבָן, אֲחִי אִמּוֹ; וַיִּגַּשׁ יַעֲקֹב, וַיָּגֶל אֶת-הָאֶבֶן מֵעַל פִּי הַבְּאֵר, וַיַּשְׁקְ, אֶת-צֹאן לָבָן אֲחִי אִמּוֹ.
Vayehi ka'asher ra'ah Ya'akov et-Rachel, bat-Lavan achi immo, ve'et-tson Lavan, achi immo; vayigash Ya'akov, vayagel et-ha'even me'al pi habe'er, vayashq, et-tson Lavan achi immo.
And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother.
11.
וַיִּשַּׁק יַעֲקֹב, לְרָחֵל; וַיִּשָּׂא אֶת-קֹלוֹ, וַיֵּבְךְּ.
Vayishak Ya'akov, le-Rachel; vayisa et-kolo, vayevk.
And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.
12.
וַיַּגֵּד יַעֲקֹב לְרָחֵל, כִּי אֲחִי אָבִיהָ הוּא, וְכִי בֶן-רִבְקָה, הוּא; וַתָּרָץ, וַתַּגֵּד לְאָבִיהָ.
Vayaged Ya'akov leRachel, ki achi aviha hu, vechi ven-Rivkah, hu; vataretz, vataged le'aviha.
And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's brother, and that he was Rebekah's son; and she ran and told her father.
13.
וַיְהִי כִשְׁמֹעַ לָבָן אֶת-שֵׁמַע יַעֲקֹב בֶּן-אֲחֹתוֹ, וַיָּרָץ לִקְרָאתוֹ וַיְחַבֶּק-לוֹ וַיְנַשֶּׁק-לוֹ, וַיְבִיאֵהוּ, אֶל-בֵּיתוֹ; וַיְסַפֵּר לְלָבָן, אֵת כָּל-הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה.
Vayehi kishmoa Lavan et-shema Yaakov ben-achoto, vayaratz likrato vaychabek-lo vaynashak-lo, vayviehu, el-beito; vaysaper leLavan, et kol-hadevarim ha'eleh.
And it came to pass, when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister's son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things.
14.
וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ לָבָן, אַךְ עַצְמִי וּבְשָׂרִי אָתָּה; וַיֵּשֶׁב עִמּוֹ, חֹדֶשׁ יָמִים.
Vayomer lo Lavan, ach atzmi uvesari atah; vayeshev imo, chodesh yamim.
And Laban said to him: 'Surely thou art my bone and my flesh.' And he abode with him the space of a month.
15.
וַיֹּאמֶר לָבָן, לְיַעֲקֹב, הֲכִי-אָחִי אַתָּה, וַעֲבַדְתַּנִי חִנָּם; הַגִּידָה לִּי, מַה-מַּשְׂכֻּרְתֶּךָ.
Vayomer Lavan, leYa'akov, haki-achi atah, va'avad-tani chinnam; hagidah li, mah-maskurtecha.
And Laban said unto Jacob: 'Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? tell me, what shall thy wages be?'
16.
וּלְלָבָן, שְׁתֵּי בָנוֹת: שֵׁם הַגְּדֹלָה לֵאָה, וְשֵׁם הַקְּטַנָּה רָחֵל.
Ulelavan, shetei vanot: shem hagedolah Leah, veshem haktanah Rachel.
Now Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.
17.
וְעֵינֵי לֵאָה, רַכּוֹת; וְרָחֵל, הָיְתָה, יְפַת-תֹּאַר, וִיפַת מַרְאֶה.
ve'einei Le'ah, rakot; veRachel, hayetah, yefat-to'ar, viyfat mar'eh.
And Leah's eyes were weak; but Rachel was of beautiful form and fair to look upon.
18.
וַיֶּאֱהַב יַעֲקֹב, אֶת-רָחֵל; וַיֹּאמֶר, אֶעֱבָדְךָ שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים, בְּרָחֵל בִּתְּךָ, הַקְּטַנָּה.
Vaye'ehav Ya'akov, et-Rachel; vayomer, e'evadka sheva shanim, beRachel bitkha, haktana.
And Jacob loved Rachel; and he said: 'I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.'
19.
וַיֹּאמֶר לָבָן, טוֹב תִּתִּי אֹתָהּ לָךְ, מִתִּתִּי אֹתָהּ, לְאִישׁ אַחֵר; שְׁבָה, עִמָּדִי.
Vayomer Lavan, tov titti otah lach, mittitti otah, le'ish acher; shevah, immadi.
And Laban said: 'It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man; abide with me.'
20.
וַיַּעֲבֹד יַעֲקֹב בְּרָחֵל, שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים; וַיִּהְיוּ בְעֵינָיו כְּיָמִים אֲחָדִים, בְּאַהֲבָתוֹ אֹתָהּ.
Vaya'avod Ya'akov be'Rachel, sheva shanim; vayihyu ve'einav keyamim achadim, be'ahavato otah.
And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.
21.
וַיֹּאמֶר יַעֲקֹב אֶל-לָבָן הָבָה אֶת-אִשְׁתִּי, כִּי מָלְאוּ יָמָי; וְאָבוֹאָה, אֵלֶיהָ.
Vayomer Ya'akov el-Lavan havah et-ishti, ki mal'u yamay; ve'avo'ah, eleha.
And Jacob said unto Laban: 'Give me my wife, for my days are filled, that I may go in unto her.'
22.
וַיֶּאֱסֹף לָבָן אֶת-כָּל-אַנְשֵׁי הַמָּקוֹם, וַיַּעַשׂ מִשְׁתֶּה.
Vaye'esof Lavan et-kol-anshei hamakom, vaya'as mishteh.
And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.
23.
וַיְהִי בָעֶרֶב--וַיִּקַּח אֶת-לֵאָה בִתּוֹ, וַיָּבֵא אֹתָהּ אֵלָיו; וַיָּבֹא, אֵלֶיהָ.
vayehi va'erev, vayikach et-Le'ah bito, vayave' otah elav; vayavo, eleiha.
And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her.
24.
וַיִּתֵּן לָבָן לָהּ, אֶת-זִלְפָּה שִׁפְחָתוֹ--לְלֵאָה בִתּוֹ, שִׁפְחָה.
Vayitten Lavan lah, et-Zilpah shifchato--leLe'ah bitto, shifchah.
And Laban gave Zilpah his handmaid unto his daughter Leah for a handmaid.
25.
וַיְהִי בַבֹּקֶר, וְהִנֵּה-הִוא לֵאָה; וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל-לָבָן, מַה-זֹּאת עָשִׂיתָ לִּי--הֲלֹא בְרָחֵל עָבַדְתִּי עִמָּךְ, וְלָמָּה רִמִּיתָנִי.
Vayehi vaboker, vehineh-hi Leah; vayomer el-Lavan, mah-zot asita li--halo veRachel avadti immach, velammah rimmitani.
And it came to pass in the morning that, behold, it was Leah; and he said to Laban: 'What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou beguiled me?'
26.
וַיֹּאמֶר לָבָן, לֹא-יֵעָשֶׂה כֵן בִּמְקוֹמֵנוּ--לָתֵת הַצְּעִירָה, לִפְנֵי הַבְּכִירָה.
Vayomer Lavan, lo-ye'aseh ken bimkomenu--latet hatze'irah, lifnei habechirah.
And Laban said: 'It is not so done in our place, to give the younger before the first-born.
27.
מַלֵּא, שְׁבֻעַ זֹאת; וְנִתְּנָה לְךָ גַּם-אֶת-זֹאת, בַּעֲבֹדָה אֲשֶׁר תַּעֲבֹד עִמָּדִי, עוֹד, שֶׁבַע-שָׁנִים אֲחֵרוֹת.
mallei, shevu'a zot; venittenah lekha gam-et-zot, ba'avodah asher ta'avod immadi, od, sheva-shanim acherot.
Fulfil the week of this one, and we will give thee the other also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.'
28.
וַיַּעַשׂ יַעֲקֹב כֵּן, וַיְמַלֵּא שְׁבֻעַ זֹאת; וַיִּתֶּן-לוֹ אֶת-רָחֵל בִּתּוֹ, לוֹ לְאִשָּׁה.
Vaya'as Ya'akov ken, vaymale shevu'a zot; vayiten-lo et-Rachel bito, lo le'isha.
And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week; and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife.
29.
וַיִּתֵּן לָבָן לְרָחֵל בִּתּוֹ, אֶת-בִּלְהָה שִׁפְחָתוֹ--לָהּ, לְשִׁפְחָה.
vayiten Lavan leRachel bito, et-Bilhah shifchato--lah, leshifchah.
And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her handmaid.
30.
וַיָּבֹא גַּם אֶל-רָחֵל, וַיֶּאֱהַב גַּם-אֶת-רָחֵל מִלֵּאָה; וַיַּעֲבֹד עִמּוֹ, עוֹד שֶׁבַע-שָׁנִים אֲחֵרוֹת.
Vayavo gam el-Rachel, vay'ehav gam-et-Rachel mile'ah; vaya'avod immo, od sheva-shanim acherot.
And he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years.
31.
וַיַּרְא יְהוָה כִּי-שְׂנוּאָה לֵאָה, וַיִּפְתַּח אֶת-רַחְמָהּ; וְרָחֵל, עֲקָרָה.
Vayar Adonai ki-senu'ah Le'ah, vayiftach et-rachmah; veRachel, akarah.
And the LORD saw that Leah was hated, and he opened her womb; but Rachel was barren.
32.
וַתַּהַר לֵאָה וַתֵּלֶד בֵּן, וַתִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ רְאוּבֵן: כִּי אָמְרָה, כִּי-רָאָה יְהוָה בְּעָנְיִי--כִּי עַתָּה, יֶאֱהָבַנִי אִישִׁי.
Vattahar Leah vatteled ben, vattikra shemo Re'uven: ki amrah, ki-ra'ah YHWH be'onyi--ki attah, ye'ehavani ishi.
And Leah conceived, and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben; for she said: 'Because the LORD hath looked upon my affliction; for now my husband will love me.'
33.
וַתַּהַר עוֹד, וַתֵּלֶד בֵּן, וַתֹּאמֶר כִּי-שָׁמַע יְהוָה כִּי-שְׂנוּאָה אָנֹכִי, וַיִּתֶּן-לִי גַּם-אֶת-זֶה; וַתִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ, שִׁמְעוֹן.
vattahar od, vatteled ben, vatto'mer ki-shama Adonai ki-senu'ah anochi, vayitten-li gam-et-zeh; vattikra shemo, Shim'on.
And she conceived again, and bore a son; and said: 'Because the LORD hath heard that I am hated, He hath therefore given me this son also.' And she called his name Simeon.
34.
וַתַּהַר עוֹד, וַתֵּלֶד בֵּן, וַתֹּאמֶר עַתָּה הַפַּעַם יִלָּוֶה אִישִׁי אֵלַי, כִּי-יָלַדְתִּי לוֹ שְׁלֹשָׁה בָנִים; עַל-כֵּן קָרָא-שְׁמוֹ, לֵוִי.
Vattahar od, vatteled ben, vatto'mer attah happa'am yillaveh ishi elai, ki-yaladti lo sheloshah vanim; al-ken kara-shemo, Levi.
And she conceived again, and bore a son; and said: 'Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have borne him three sons.' Therefore was his name called Levi.
35.
וַתַּהַר עוֹד וַתֵּלֶד בֵּן, וַתֹּאמֶר הַפַּעַם אוֹדֶה אֶת-יְהוָה--עַל-כֵּן קָרְאָה שְׁמוֹ, יְהוּדָה; וַתַּעֲמֹד, מִלֶּדֶת.
vattahar od vatteled ben, vatto'mer hapa'am odeh et-Adonai--al-ken kar'ah shemo, Yehudah; vatta'amod, milledet.
And she conceived again, and bore a son; and she said: 'This time will I praise the LORD.' Therefore she called his name Judah; and she left off bearing.
