1.
וַיהוָה פָּקַד אֶת-שָׂרָה, כַּאֲשֶׁר אָמָר; וַיַּעַשׂ יְהוָה לְשָׂרָה, כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֵּר.
Va'Adonai paqad et-Sarah, ka'asher amar; va'ya'as Adonai le'Sarah, ka'asher diber.
And the LORD remembered Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as He had spoken.
2.
וַתַּהַר וַתֵּלֶד שָׂרָה לְאַבְרָהָם בֵּן, לִזְקֻנָיו, לַמּוֹעֵד, אֲשֶׁר-דִּבֶּר אֹתוֹ אֱלֹהִים.
Vattahar vatteled Sarah le'Avraham ben, lizkunav, lammo'ed, asher-dibber oto Elohim.
And Sarah conceived, and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.
3.
וַיִּקְרָא אַבְרָהָם אֶת-שֶׁם-בְּנוֹ הַנּוֹלַד-לוֹ, אֲשֶׁר-יָלְדָה-לּוֹ שָׂרָה--יִצְחָק.
Vayikra Avraham et-shem-beno hanolad-lo, asher-yaldah-lo Sarah--Yitzchak.
And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac.
4.
וַיָּמָל אַבְרָהָם אֶת-יִצְחָק בְּנוֹ, בֶּן-שְׁמֹנַת יָמִים, כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה אֹתוֹ, אֱלֹהִים.
Vayamal Avraham et-Yitzchak beno, ben-shemonat yamim, ka'asher tzivah oto, Elohim.
And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.
5.
וְאַבְרָהָם, בֶּן-מְאַת שָׁנָה, בְּהִוָּלֶד לוֹ, אֵת יִצְחָק בְּנוֹ.
Ve'avraham, ben-me'at shanah, behivaled lo, et Yitzchak beno.
And Abraham was a hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.
6.
וַתֹּאמֶר שָׂרָה--צְחֹק, עָשָׂה לִי אֱלֹהִים: כָּל-הַשֹּׁמֵעַ, יִצְחַק-לִי.
Vatto'mer Sarah, tzechoq 'asah li Elohim; kol-hashomea' yitzchaq-li.
And Sarah said: 'God hath made laughter for me; every one that heareth will laugh on account of me.'
7.
וַתֹּאמֶר, מִי מִלֵּל לְאַבְרָהָם, הֵינִיקָה בָנִים, שָׂרָה: כִּי-יָלַדְתִּי בֵן, לִזְקֻנָיו.
Vatto'mer, mi millel le'Avraham, heynikah vanim, Sarah: ki-yaladti ven, lizkunav.
And she said: 'Who would have said unto Abraham, that Sarah should give children suck? for I have borne him a son in his old age.'
8.
וַיִּגְדַּל הַיֶּלֶד, וַיִּגָּמַל; וַיַּעַשׂ אַבְרָהָם מִשְׁתֶּה גָדוֹל, בְּיוֹם הִגָּמֵל אֶת-יִצְחָק.
Vayigdal hayeled, vayigamal; vaya'as Avraham mishteh gadol, beyom higamel et-Yitzchak.
And the child grew, and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.
9.
וַתֵּרֶא שָׂרָה אֶת-בֶּן-הָגָר הַמִּצְרִית, אֲשֶׁר-יָלְדָה לְאַבְרָהָם--מְצַחֵק.
Vatere Sarah et-ben-Hagar hamitzrit, asher-yaldah le'Avraham--metzahek.
And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne unto Abraham, making sport.
10.
וַתֹּאמֶר, לְאַבְרָהָם, גָּרֵשׁ הָאָמָה הַזֹּאת, וְאֶת-בְּנָהּ: כִּי לֹא יִירַשׁ בֶּן-הָאָמָה הַזֹּאת, עִם-בְּנִי עִם-יִצְחָק.
vato'mer le'avraham, garesh ha'amah hazot, ve'et-benah: ki lo yirash ben-ha'amah hazot, im-beni im-Yitzchak.
Wherefore she said unto Abraham: 'Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.'
11.
וַיֵּרַע הַדָּבָר מְאֹד, בְּעֵינֵי אַבְרָהָם, עַל, אוֹדֹת בְּנוֹ.
Vayera hadavar me'od, be'einei Avraham, al, odot beno.
And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight on account of his son.
12.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים אֶל-אַבְרָהָם, אַל-יֵרַע בְּעֵינֶיךָ עַל-הַנַּעַר וְעַל-אֲמָתֶךָ--כֹּל אֲשֶׁר תֹּאמַר אֵלֶיךָ שָׂרָה, שְׁמַע בְּקֹלָהּ: כִּי בְיִצְחָק, יִקָּרֵא לְךָ זָרַע.
Vayomer Elohim el-Avraham, al-yera be'eineicha al-hana'ar ve'al-amatecha--kol asher tomar eileicha Sarah, shema bekolah: ki veYitzchak, yikare lecha zara.
And God said unto Abraham: 'Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah saith unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall seed be called to thee.
13.
וְגַם אֶת-בֶּן-הָאָמָה, לְגוֹי אֲשִׂימֶנּוּ: כִּי זַרְעֲךָ, הוּא.
Ve'gam et-ben-ha'amah, le'goy asimennu: ki zar'akha, hu.
And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.'
14.
וַיַּשְׁכֵּם אַבְרָהָם בַּבֹּקֶר וַיִּקַּח-לֶחֶם וְחֵמַת מַיִם וַיִּתֵּן אֶל-הָגָר שָׂם עַל-שִׁכְמָהּ, וְאֶת-הַיֶּלֶד--וַיְשַׁלְּחֶהָ; וַתֵּלֶךְ וַתֵּתַע, בְּמִדְבַּר בְּאֵר שָׁבַע.
Vayashkem Avraham baboker vayikach-lechem vechemat mayim vayiten el-Hagar sam al-shichmah, ve'et-hayeled--vayshalcheha; vatelech vateta, bemidbar Be'er Sheva.
And Abraham arose up early in the morning, and took bread and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away; and she departed, and strayed in the wilderness of Beer-sheba.
15.
וַיִּכְלוּ הַמַּיִם, מִן-הַחֵמֶת; וַתַּשְׁלֵךְ אֶת-הַיֶּלֶד, תַּחַת אַחַד הַשִּׂיחִם.
vayichlu hamayim, min-hachemet; vattashlech et-hayeled, tachat achad hasichim.
And the water in the bottle was spent, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs.
16.
וַתֵּלֶךְ וַתֵּשֶׁב לָהּ מִנֶּגֶד, הַרְחֵק כִּמְטַחֲוֵי קֶשֶׁת, כִּי אָמְרָה, אַל-אֶרְאֶה בְּמוֹת הַיָּלֶד; וַתֵּשֶׁב מִנֶּגֶד, וַתִּשָּׂא אֶת-קֹלָהּ וַתֵּבְךְּ.
Vattelech vatteshev lah mineged, harchek kimtachavei keshet, ki amrah, al-ereh bemot hayeled; vatteshev mineged, vattisa et-kolah vattevch.
And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bow-shot; for she said: 'Let me not look upon the death of the child.' And she sat over against him, and lifted up her voice, and wept.
17.
וַיִּשְׁמַע אֱלֹהִים, אֶת-קוֹל הַנַּעַר, וַיִּקְרָא מַלְאַךְ אֱלֹהִים אֶל-הָגָר מִן-הַשָּׁמַיִם, וַיֹּאמֶר לָהּ מַה-לָּךְ הָגָר; אַל-תִּירְאִי, כִּי-שָׁמַע אֱלֹהִים אֶל-קוֹל הַנַּעַר בַּאֲשֶׁר הוּא-שָׁם.
Vayishma Elohim, et-kol hanna'ar, vayikra mal'ach Elohim el-Hagar min-hashamayim, vayomer lah mah-lach Hagar; al-tir'i, ki-shama Elohim el-kol hanna'ar ba'asher hu-sham.
And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her: 'What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is.
18.
קוּמִי שְׂאִי אֶת-הַנַּעַר, וְהַחֲזִיקִי אֶת-יָדֵךְ בּוֹ: כִּי-לְגוֹי גָּדוֹל, אֲשִׂימֶנּוּ.
Kumi se'i et-hanna'ar, veha'haziki et-yadech bo: ki-legoy gadol, asimennu.
Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him fast by thy hand; for I will make him a great nation.'
19.
וַיִּפְקַח אֱלֹהִים אֶת-עֵינֶיהָ, וַתֵּרֶא בְּאֵר מָיִם; וַתֵּלֶךְ וַתְּמַלֵּא אֶת-הַחֵמֶת, מַיִם, וַתַּשְׁקְ, אֶת-הַנָּעַר.
Vayifkach Elohim et-eineiha, vatere be'er mayim; vatelech vatemale et-hachemet, mayim, vatashke, et-hana'ar.
And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.
20.
וַיְהִי אֱלֹהִים אֶת-הַנַּעַר, וַיִּגְדָּל; וַיֵּשֶׁב, בַּמִּדְבָּר, וַיְהִי, רֹבֶה קַשָּׁת.
vayehi Elohim et-hanna'ar, vayigdal; vayeshev, bammidbar, vayehi, roveh qashat.
And God was with the lad, and he grew; and he dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.
21.
וַיֵּשֶׁב, בְּמִדְבַּר פָּארָן; וַתִּקַּח-לוֹ אִמּוֹ אִשָּׁה, מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם.
Vayeshev, bemidbar Paran; vattiqach-lo immo ishah, me'eretz Mitzrayim.
And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.
22.
וַיְהִי, בָּעֵת הַהִוא, וַיֹּאמֶר אֲבִימֶלֶךְ וּפִיכֹל שַׂר-צְבָאוֹ, אֶל-אַבְרָהָם לֵאמֹר: אֱלֹהִים עִמְּךָ, בְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר-אַתָּה עֹשֶׂה.
Vayehi, ba'et hahi, vayomer Avimelech uFichol sar-tzeva'o, el-Avraham lemor: Elohim imcha, bechol asher-atah oseh.
And it came to pass at that time, that Abimelech and Phicol the captain of his host spoke unto Abraham, saying: 'God is with thee in all that thou doest.
23.
וְעַתָּה, הִשָּׁבְעָה לִּי בֵאלֹהִים הֵנָּה, אִם-תִּשְׁקֹר לִי, וּלְנִינִי וּלְנֶכְדִּי; כַּחֶסֶד אֲשֶׁר-עָשִׂיתִי עִמְּךָ, תַּעֲשֶׂה עִמָּדִי, וְעִם-הָאָרֶץ, אֲשֶׁר-גַּרְתָּה בָּהּ.
ve'attah, hishave'ah li ve'Elohim hennah, im-tishkor li, ulenini ulenekdi; kachesed asher-asiti immekha, ta'aseh immadi, ve'im-ha'aretz, asher-gartah bah.
Now therefore swear unto me here by God that thou wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son's son; but according to the kindness that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me, and to the land wherein thou hast sojourned.'
24.
וַיֹּאמֶר, אַבְרָהָם, אָנֹכִי, אִשָּׁבֵעַ.
Vayomer, Avraham, anochi, ishavei'a.
And Abraham said: 'I will swear.'
25.
וְהוֹכִחַ אַבְרָהָם, אֶת-אֲבִימֶלֶךְ, עַל-אֹדוֹת בְּאֵר הַמַּיִם, אֲשֶׁר גָּזְלוּ עַבְדֵי אֲבִימֶלֶךְ.
Ve'hochiah Avraham, et-Avimelech, al-odot be'er ha'mayim, asher gazlu avdei Avimelech.
And Abraham reproved Abimelech because of the well of water, which Abimelech's servants had violently taken away.
26.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֲבִימֶלֶךְ--לֹא יָדַעְתִּי, מִי עָשָׂה אֶת-הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה; וְגַם-אַתָּה לֹא-הִגַּדְתָּ לִּי, וְגַם אָנֹכִי לֹא שָׁמַעְתִּי--בִּלְתִּי הַיּוֹם.
Vayomer Avimelech, lo yada'ti mi asah et-hadavar hazeh; vegam-atah lo-higadta li, vegam anochi lo shamati--bilti hayom.
And Abimelech said: 'I know not who hath done this thing; neither didst thou tell me, neither yet heard I of it, but to-day.'
27.
וַיִּקַּח אַבְרָהָם צֹאן וּבָקָר, וַיִּתֵּן לַאֲבִימֶלֶךְ; וַיִּכְרְתוּ שְׁנֵיהֶם, בְּרִית.
Vayikkach Avraham tzon uvaqar, vayitten la'Avimelech; vayichretu shenehem, berit.
And Abraham took sheep and oxen, and gave them unto Abimelech; and they two made a covenant.
28.
וַיַּצֵּב אַבְרָהָם, אֶת-שֶׁבַע כִּבְשֹׂת הַצֹּאן--לְבַדְּהֶן.
Vayatzev Avraham, et-sheva kivsot hatzon--levadehen.
And Abraham set seven ewe-lambs of the flock by themselves.
29.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֲבִימֶלֶךְ, אֶל-אַבְרָהָם: מָה הֵנָּה, שֶׁבַע כְּבָשֹׂת הָאֵלֶּה, אֲשֶׁר הִצַּבְתָּ, לְבַדָּנָה.
Vayomer Avimelech, el-Avraham: mah hennah, sheva kevasot ha'elleh, asher hitzavta, levadanah.
And Abimelech said unto Abraham: 'What mean these seven ewe-lambs which thou hast set by themselves?'
30.
וַיֹּאמֶר--כִּי אֶת-שֶׁבַע כְּבָשֹׂת, תִּקַּח מִיָּדִי: בַּעֲבוּר תִּהְיֶה-לִּי לְעֵדָה, כִּי חָפַרְתִּי אֶת-הַבְּאֵר הַזֹּאת.
Vayomer—ki et-sheva kevasot, tikach miyadi: ba'avur tihyeh-li le'edah, ki chafarti et-habe'er hazot.
And he said: 'Verily, these seven ewe-lambs shalt thou take of my hand, that it may be a witness unto me, that I have digged this well.'
31.
עַל-כֵּן, קָרָא לַמָּקוֹם הַהוּא--בְּאֵר שָׁבַע: כִּי שָׁם נִשְׁבְּעוּ, שְׁנֵיהֶם.
Al-ken, kara lamakom hahu--Be'er Sheva: ki sham nishbe'u, shenehem.
Wherefore that place was called Beer-sheba; because there they swore both of them.
32.
וַיִּכְרְתוּ בְרִית, בִּבְאֵר שָׁבַע; וַיָּקָם אֲבִימֶלֶךְ, וּפִיכֹל שַׂר-צְבָאוֹ, וַיָּשֻׁבוּ, אֶל-אֶרֶץ פְּלִשְׁתִּים.
vayyikretu verit, biv'er shava; vayyakam Avimelech, uFichol sar-tzeva'o, vayyashuvu, el-eretz Pelishtim.
So they made a covenant at Beer-sheba; and Abimelech rose up, and Phicol the captain of his host, and they returned into the land of the Philistines.
33.
וַיִּטַּע אֶשֶׁל, בִּבְאֵר שָׁבַע; וַיִּקְרָא-שָׁם--בְּשֵׁם יְהוָה, אֵל עוֹלָם.
vayita eshel, biv'er sheva; vayikra-sham--beshem YHWH, el olam.
And Abraham planted a tamarisk-tree in Beer-sheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God.
34.
וַיָּגָר אַבְרָהָם בְּאֶרֶץ פְּלִשְׁתִּים, יָמִים רַבִּים.
Vayagar Avraham be'eretz Pelishtim, yamim rabim.
And Abraham sojourned in the land of the Philistines many days.
