1.
אַחַר הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה, הָיָה דְבַר-יְהוָה אֶל-אַבְרָם, בַּמַּחֲזֶה, לֵאמֹר: אַל-תִּירָא אַבְרָם, אָנֹכִי מָגֵן לָךְ--שְׂכָרְךָ, הַרְבֵּה מְאֹד.
achar hadevarim ha'eleh, hayah devar-YHWH el-Avram, bamachazeh, lemor: al-tira Avram, anochi magen lach--secharcha, harbeh me'od.
After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying: 'Fear not, Abram, I am thy shield, thy reward shall be exceeding great.'
2.
וַיֹּאמֶר אַבְרָם, אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה מַה-תִּתֶּן-לִי, וְאָנֹכִי, הוֹלֵךְ עֲרִירִי; וּבֶן-מֶשֶׁק בֵּיתִי, הוּא דַּמֶּשֶׂק אֱלִיעֶזֶר.
Vayomer Avram, Adonai YHWH mah-titen-li, ve'anokhi, holekh ariri; uven-meshek beiti, hu damesehek Eliezer.
And Abram said: 'O Lord GOD, what wilt Thou give me, seeing I go hence childless, and he that shall be possessor of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?'
3.
וַיֹּאמֶר אַבְרָם--הֵן לִי, לֹא נָתַתָּה זָרַע; וְהִנֵּה בֶן-בֵּיתִי, יוֹרֵשׁ אֹתִי.
vayomer Avram, hen li, lo natata zara; vehineh ven-beyti, yoresh oti.
And Abram said: 'Behold, to me Thou hast given no seed, and, lo, one born in my house is to be mine heir.'
4.
וְהִנֵּה דְבַר-יְהוָה אֵלָיו לֵאמֹר, לֹא יִירָשְׁךָ זֶה: כִּי-אִם אֲשֶׁר יֵצֵא מִמֵּעֶיךָ, הוּא יִירָשֶׁךָ.
ve'hinneh devar-YHWH elav lemor, lo yirashkha zeh: ki-im asher yetze mime'ekha, hu yirashkha.
And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying: 'This man shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.'

וַיּוֹצֵא אֹתוֹ הַחוּצָה, וַיֹּאמֶר הַבֶּט-נָא הַשָּׁמַיְמָה וּסְפֹר הַכּוֹכָבִים--אִם-תּוּכַל, לִסְפֹּר אֹתָם; וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ, כֹּה יִהְיֶה זַרְעֶךָ.
vayoze oto hachutza, vayomer habet-na hashaymayma usefor hakochavim--im-tuchal, lispor otam; vayomer lo, koh yihyeh zar'echa.
And He brought him forth abroad, and said: 'Look now toward heaven, and count the stars, if thou be able to count them'; and He said unto him: 'So shall thy seed be.'
6.
וְהֶאֱמִן, בַּיהוָה; וַיַּחְשְׁבֶהָ לּוֹ, צְדָקָה.
ve'he'emin ba'Adonai va'yachsheveha lo tzedakah.
And he believed in the LORD; and He counted it to him for righteousness.
7.
וַיֹּאמֶר, אֵלָיו: אֲנִי יְהוָה, אֲשֶׁר הוֹצֵאתִיךָ מֵאוּר כַּשְׂדִּים--לָתֶת לְךָ אֶת-הָאָרֶץ הַזֹּאת, לְרִשְׁתָּהּ.
vayomer elav ani YHWH asher hotzeticha me'ur kasdim latet lecha et ha'aretz hazot lerishtah
And He said unto him: 'I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.'
8.
וַיֹּאמַר: אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה, בַּמָּה אֵדַע כִּי אִירָשֶׁנָּה.
Vayomer: Adonai YHWH, bamah eda ki irashenah.
And he said: 'O Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?'
9.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו, קְחָה לִי עֶגְלָה מְשֻׁלֶּשֶׁת, וְעֵז מְשֻׁלֶּשֶׁת, וְאַיִל מְשֻׁלָּשׁ; וְתֹר, וְגוֹזָל.
vayomer elav, kecha li eglah meshuleshet, ve'ez meshuleshet, ve'ayil meshulash; vetor, vegozal.
And He said unto him: 'Take Me a heifer of three years old, and a she-goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtle-dove, and a young pigeon.'
10.
וַיִּקַּח-לוֹ אֶת-כָּל-אֵלֶּה, וַיְבַתֵּר אֹתָם בַּתָּוֶךְ, וַיִּתֵּן אִישׁ-בִּתְרוֹ, לִקְרַאת רֵעֵהוּ; וְאֶת-הַצִּפֹּר, לֹא בָתָר.
vayikach-lo et-kol-eleh, ve'vatere otam ba'tavech, ve'yiten ish-bitro, likrat re'ehu; ve'et-ha'tsipor, lo vatar.
And he took him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each half over against the other; but the birds divided he not.
11.
וַיֵּרֶד הָעַיִט, עַל-הַפְּגָרִים; וַיַּשֵּׁב אֹתָם, אַבְרָם.
vayered ha'ayit, al-hapegarim; vayasheshev otam, Avram.
And the birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, and Abram drove them away.
12.
וַיְהִי הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ לָבוֹא, וְתַרְדֵּמָה נָפְלָה עַל-אַבְרָם; וְהִנֵּה אֵימָה חֲשֵׁכָה גְדֹלָה, נֹפֶלֶת עָלָיו.
vayhi ha'shemesh lavo, ve'tardema naf'la al-Avram; ve'hineh eimah chashekhah gedolah, nofelet alav.
And it came to pass, that, when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, a dread, even a great darkness, fell upon him.
13.
וַיֹּאמֶר לְאַבְרָם, יָדֹעַ תֵּדַע כִּי-גֵר יִהְיֶה זַרְעֲךָ בְּאֶרֶץ לֹא לָהֶם, וַעֲבָדוּם, וְעִנּוּ אֹתָם--אַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת, שָׁנָה.
vayomer le'Avram, yado'a teda ki-ger yihyeh zar'akha be'erets lo lahem, va'avadum, ve'inu otam--arba me'ot, shanah.
And He said unto Abram: 'Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;
14.
וְגַם אֶת-הַגּוֹי אֲשֶׁר יַעֲבֹדוּ, דָּן אָנֹכִי; וְאַחֲרֵי-כֵן יֵצְאוּ, בִּרְכֻשׁ גָּדוֹל.
ve'gam et-hagoy asher ya'avodu, dan anochi; ve'acharei-chen yetze'u, birchush gadol.
and also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge; and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
15.
וְאַתָּה תָּבוֹא אֶל-אֲבֹתֶיךָ, בְּשָׁלוֹם: תִּקָּבֵר, בְּשֵׂיבָה טוֹבָה.
ve'attah tavo el-avoteicha, beshalom: tikkaver, beseivah tovah.
But thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.
16.
וְדוֹר רְבִיעִי, יָשׁוּבוּ הֵנָּה: כִּי לֹא-שָׁלֵם עֲוֺן הָאֱמֹרִי, עַד-הֵנָּה.
ve'dor revi'i, yashuvu hennah: ki lo-shalem avon ha'emori, ad-hennah.
And in the fourth generation they shall come back hither; for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet full.'
17.
וַיְהִי הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ בָּאָה, וַעֲלָטָה הָיָה; וְהִנֵּה תַנּוּר עָשָׁן, וְלַפִּיד אֵשׁ, אֲשֶׁר עָבַר, בֵּין הַגְּזָרִים הָאֵלֶּה.
vayhi ha'shemesh ba'ah, va'alatah hayah; ve'hinneh tannur ashan, ve'lappid esh, asher avar, bein ha'gezarim ha'eleh.
And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and there was thick darkness, behold a smoking furnace, and a flaming torch that passed between these pieces.
18.
בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא, כָּרַת יְהוָה אֶת-אַבְרָם--בְּרִית לֵאמֹר: לְזַרְעֲךָ, נָתַתִּי אֶת-הָאָרֶץ הַזֹּאת, מִנְּהַר מִצְרַיִם, עַד-הַנָּהָר הַגָּדֹל נְהַר-פְּרָת.
bayom hahu, karat YHWH et-Avram--b'rit lemor: l'zar'akha, natati et-ha'aretz hazot, min'har Mitzrayim, ad-hanahar hagadol n'har-P'rat.
In that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying: 'Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates;
19.
אֶת-הַקֵּינִי, וְאֶת-הַקְּנִזִּי, וְאֵת, הַקַּדְמֹנִי.
et-ha'qeni, ve'et-ha'qenizzi, ve'et, ha'qadmoni.
the Kenite, and the Kenizzite, and the Kadmonite,
20.
וְאֶת-הַחִתִּי וְאֶת-הַפְּרִזִּי, וְאֶת-הָרְפָאִים.
ve'et-hachiti ve'et-haperizi, ve'et-harefa'im.
and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Rephaim,
21.
וְאֶת-הָאֱמֹרִי, וְאֶת-הַכְּנַעֲנִי, וְאֶת-הַגִּרְגָּשִׁי, וְאֶת-הַיְבוּסִי.
ve'et-ha'emori, ve'et-hakena'ani, ve'et-hagirgashi, ve'et-hayevusi.
and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Girgashite, and the Jebusite.'
