1.
וְאֵלֶּה, הַמִּשְׁפָּטִים, אֲשֶׁר תָּשִׂים, לִפְנֵיהֶם.
ve'elleh, hammishpatim, asher tasim, lifneihem.
Now these are the ordinances which thou shalt set before them.
2.
כִּי תִקְנֶה עֶבֶד עִבְרִי, שֵׁשׁ שָׁנִים יַעֲבֹד; וּבַשְּׁבִעִת--יֵצֵא לַחָפְשִׁי, חִנָּם.
ki tikneh eved ivri, shesh shanim ya'avod; uvashevi'it yetze lakhapshi, khinnam.
If thou buy a Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve; and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.
3.
אִם-בְּגַפּוֹ יָבֹא, בְּגַפּוֹ יֵצֵא; אִם-בַּעַל אִשָּׁה הוּא, וְיָצְאָה אִשְׁתּוֹ עִמּוֹ.
im-begapo yavo, begapo yetze; im-ba'al ishah hu, ve'yatz'ah ishto immo.
If he come in by himself, he shall go out by himself; if he be married, then his wife shall go out with him.
4.
אִם-אֲדֹנָיו יִתֶּן-לוֹ אִשָּׁה, וְיָלְדָה-לוֹ בָנִים אוֹ בָנוֹת--הָאִשָּׁה וִילָדֶיהָ, תִּהְיֶה לַאדֹנֶיהָ, וְהוּא, יֵצֵא בְגַפּוֹ.
im-adonav yitten-lo ishah, veyaldah-lo banim o banot--ha'ishah vilyadeha, tihyeh la'doneha, vehu, yetzei vegapo.
If his master give him a wife, and she bear him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself.
5.
וְאִם-אָמֹר יֹאמַר, הָעֶבֶד, אָהַבְתִּי אֶת-אֲדֹנִי, אֶת-אִשְׁתִּי וְאֶת-בָּנָי; לֹא אֵצֵא, חָפְשִׁי.
ve'im-amor yomar, ha'eved, ahavti et-adoni, et-ishti ve'et-banay; lo etze, khofshi.
But if the servant shall plainly say: I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free;
6.
וְהִגִּישׁוֹ אֲדֹנָיו, אֶל-הָאֱלֹהִים, וְהִגִּישׁוֹ אֶל-הַדֶּלֶת, אוֹ אֶל-הַמְּזוּזָה; וְרָצַע אֲדֹנָיו אֶת-אָזְנוֹ בַּמַּרְצֵעַ, וַעֲבָדוֹ לְעֹלָם.
vehiggisho adonav, el-ha'Elohim, vehiggisho el-haddelet, o el-hammezuzah; veratza adonav et-ozno bammartze'a, va'avado le'olam.
then his master shall bring him unto God, and shall bring him to the door, or unto the door-post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl; and he shall serve him for ever.
7.
וְכִי-יִמְכֹּר אִישׁ אֶת-בִּתּוֹ, לְאָמָה--לֹא תֵצֵא, כְּצֵאת הָעֲבָדִים.
vekhi-yimkor ish et-bitto, le'amah--lo tetse, ketse't ha'avadim.
And if a man sell his daughter to be a maid-servant, she shall not go out as the men-servants do.
8.
אִם-רָעָה בְּעֵינֵי אֲדֹנֶיהָ, אֲשֶׁר-לא לוֹ יְעָדָהּ--וְהֶפְדָּהּ: לְעַם נָכְרִי לֹא-יִמְשֹׁל לְמָכְרָהּ, בְּבִגְדוֹ-בָהּ.
im-ra'ah be'einei adoneha, asher-lo lo ye'adah--vehefdah: le'am nokhri lo-yimshol lemakhrah, bevigdo-vah.
If she please not her master, who hath espoused her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed; to sell her unto a foreign people he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her.
9.
וְאִם-לִבְנוֹ, יִיעָדֶנָּה--כְּמִשְׁפַּט הַבָּנוֹת, יַעֲשֶׂה-לָּהּ.
ve'im-libno, yiy'adenah--kemishpat habanot, ya'aseh-llah.
And if he espouse her unto his son, he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters.
10.
אִם-אַחֶרֶת, יִקַּח-לוֹ--שְׁאֵרָהּ כְּסוּתָהּ וְעֹנָתָהּ, לֹא יִגְרָע.
im-akheret, yikkakh-lo--she'erah kesutah ve'onatah, lo yigra'.
If he take him another wife, her food, her raiment, and her conjugal rights, shall he not diminish.
11.
וְאִם-שְׁלָשׁ-אֵלֶּה--לֹא יַעֲשֶׂה, לָהּ: וְיָצְאָה חִנָּם, אֵין כָּסֶף.
ve'im-shelash-elleh--lo ya'aseh, lah: veyatz'ah khinnam, ein kasef.
And if he do not these three unto her, then shall she go out for nothing, without money.
12.
מַכֵּה אִישׁ וָמֵת, מוֹת יוּמָת.
makeh ish vamet, mot yumat.
He that smiteth a man, so that he dieth, shall surely be put to death.
13.
וַאֲשֶׁר לֹא צָדָה, וְהָאֱלֹהִים אִנָּה לְיָדוֹ--וְשַׂמְתִּי לְךָ מָקוֹם, אֲשֶׁר יָנוּס שָׁמָּה.
va'asher lo tzadah, veha'Elohim innah leyado--vesamti lekha makom, asher yanus shammah.
And if a man lie not in wait, but God cause it to come to hand; then I will appoint thee a place whither he may flee.
14.
וְכִי-יָזִד אִישׁ עַל-רֵעֵהוּ, לְהָרְגוֹ בְעָרְמָה--מֵעִם מִזְבְּחִי, תִּקָּחֶנּוּ לָמוּת.
ve'khi-yazid ish al-re'ehu, lehargo ve'armah--me'im mizbehi, tikkachennu lamut.
And if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour, to slay him with guile; thou shalt take him from Mine altar, that he may die.
15.
וּמַכֵּה אָבִיו וְאִמּוֹ, מוֹת יוּמָת.
umakkeh aviv ve'immo, mot yumat.
And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death.
16.
וְגֹנֵב אִישׁ וּמְכָרוֹ וְנִמְצָא בְיָדוֹ, מוֹת יוּמָת.
vegonev ish ume'kharo venimtsa veyado, mot yumat.
And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.
17.
וּמְקַלֵּל אָבִיו וְאִמּוֹ, מוֹת יוּמָת.
umeqallel aviv ve'immo, mot yumat.
And he that curseth his father or his mother, shall surely be put to death.
18.
וְכִי-יְרִיבֻן אֲנָשִׁים--וְהִכָּה-אִישׁ אֶת-רֵעֵהוּ, בְּאֶבֶן אוֹ בְאֶגְרֹף; וְלֹא יָמוּת, וְנָפַל לְמִשְׁכָּב.
ve'chi-yerivun anashim--vehikka-ish et-re'ehu, be'even o ve'egrof; ve'lo yamut, venafal lemishkav.
And if men contend, and one smite the other with a stone, or with his fist, and he die not, but keep his bed;
19.
אִם-יָקוּם וְהִתְהַלֵּךְ בַּחוּץ, עַל-מִשְׁעַנְתּוֹ--וְנִקָּה הַמַּכֶּה: רַק שִׁבְתּוֹ יִתֵּן, וְרַפֹּא יְרַפֵּא.
im-yakum vehithallekh bakhutz, al-mish'anto--venikah hammakeh: rak shivto yitten, verappo yerappe.
if he rise again, and walk abroad upon his staff, then shall he that smote him be quit; only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall cause him to be thoroughly healed.
20.
וְכִי-יַכֶּה אִישׁ אֶת-עַבְדּוֹ אוֹ אֶת-אֲמָתוֹ, בַּשֵּׁבֶט, וּמֵת, תַּחַת יָדוֹ--נָקֹם, יִנָּקֵם.
vekhi-yakkhe ish et-avdo o et-amato, bashevet, umet, takhat yado--nakom, yinnakem.
And if a man smite his bondman, or his bondwoman, with a rod, and he die under his hand, he shall surely be punished.
21.
אַךְ אִם-יוֹם אוֹ יוֹמַיִם, יַעֲמֹד--לֹא יֻקַּם, כִּי כַסְפּוֹ הוּא.
akh im-yom o yomayim, ya'amod--lo yukam, ki khaspo hu.
Notwithstanding if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished; for he is his money.
22.
וְכִי-יִנָּצוּ אֲנָשִׁים, וְנָגְפוּ אִשָּׁה הָרָה וְיָצְאוּ יְלָדֶיהָ, וְלֹא יִהְיֶה, אָסוֹן--עָנוֹשׁ יֵעָנֵשׁ, כַּאֲשֶׁר יָשִׁית עָלָיו בַּעַל הָאִשָּׁה, וְנָתַן, בִּפְלִלִים.
ve'chi-yinnatzu anashim, venagefu ishah harah veyatzu yeladeha, velo yihyeh, ason--anosh ye'anesh, ka'asher yashit alav ba'al ha'ishah, venatan, biflilim.
And if men strive together, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart, and yet no harm follow, he shall be surely fined, according as the woman's husband shall lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.
23.
וְאִם-אָסוֹן, יִהְיֶה--וְנָתַתָּה נֶפֶשׁ, תַּחַת נָפֶשׁ.
ve'im-ason, yihyeh--venatatta nefesh, takhat nefesh.
But if any harm follow, then thou shalt give life for life,
24.
עַיִן תַּחַת עַיִן, שֵׁן תַּחַת שֵׁן, יָד תַּחַת יָד, רֶגֶל תַּחַת רָגֶל.
a'yin takhat a'yin, shen takhat shen, yad takhat yad, regel takhat regel.
eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
25.
כְּוִיָּה תַּחַת כְּוִיָּה, פֶּצַע תַּחַת פָּצַע, חַבּוּרָה, תַּחַת חַבּוּרָה.
keviyah takhat keviyah, petza takhat patza, khaburah, takhat khaburah.
burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.
26.
וְכִי-יַכֶּה אִישׁ אֶת-עֵין עַבְדּוֹ, אוֹ-אֶת-עֵין אֲמָתוֹ--וְשִׁחֲתָהּ: לַחָפְשִׁי יְשַׁלְּחֶנּוּ, תַּחַת עֵינוֹ.
vekhi-yakkhe ish et-ein avdo, o-et-ein amato--veshikhatah: lakhapshi yeshallhennu, takhat eino.
And if a man smite the eye of his bondman, or the eye of his bondwoman, and destroy it, he shall let him go free for his eye's sake.
27.
וְאִם-שֵׁן עַבְדּוֹ אוֹ-שֵׁן אֲמָתוֹ, יַפִּיל--לַחָפְשִׁי יְשַׁלְּחֶנּוּ, תַּחַת שִׁנּוֹ.
ve'im-shen avdo o-shen amato, yappil--lachafshi yeshalechennu, tachat shinno.
And if he smite out his bondman's tooth, or his bondwoman's tooth, he shall let him go free for his tooth's sake.
28.
וְכִי-יִגַּח שׁוֹר אֶת-אִישׁ אוֹ אֶת-אִשָּׁה, וָמֵת--סָקוֹל יִסָּקֵל הַשּׁוֹר, וְלֹא יֵאָכֵל אֶת-בְּשָׂרוֹ, וּבַעַל הַשּׁוֹר, נָקִי.
vekhi-yiggakh shor et-ish o et-ishah, vamet--sakol yissakel hashor, velo ye'akel et-besarokho, uva'al hashor, naqi.
And if an ox gore a man or a woman, that they die, the ox shall be surely stoned, and its flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be quit.
29.
וְאִם שׁוֹר נַגָּח הוּא מִתְּמֹל שִׁלְשֹׁם, וְהוּעַד בִּבְעָלָיו וְלֹא יִשְׁמְרֶנּוּ, וְהֵמִית אִישׁ, אוֹ אִשָּׁה--הַשּׁוֹר, יִסָּקֵל, וְגַם-בְּעָלָיו, יוּמָת.
ve'im shor naggakh hu mitmool shilshom, vehu'ad biv'alav velo yishmerennu, vehemit ish, o ishah--hashshor, yissakel, vegam-be'alav, yumat.
But if the ox was wont to gore in time past, and warning hath been given to its owner, and he hath not kept it in, but it hath killed a man or a woman; the ox shall be stoned, and its owner also shall be put to death.
30.
אִם-כֹּפֶר, יוּשַׁת עָלָיו--וְנָתַן פִּדְיֹן נַפְשׁוֹ, כְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר-יוּשַׁת עָלָיו.
im-kofer, yushat alav--venatan pidyon nafsho, kekhol asher-yushat alav.
If there be laid on him a ransom, then he shall give for the redemption of his life whatsoever is laid upon him.
31.
אוֹ-בֵן יִגָּח, אוֹ-בַת יִגָּח--כַּמִּשְׁפָּט הַזֶּה, יֵעָשֶׂה לּוֹ.
o-ben yiggakh, o-bat yiggakh--kammishpat hazzeh, ye'aseh lo.
Whether it have gored a son, or have gored a daughter, according to this judgment shall it be done unto him.
32.
אִם-עֶבֶד יִגַּח הַשּׁוֹר, אוֹ אָמָה--כֶּסֶף שְׁלֹשִׁים שְׁקָלִים, יִתֵּן לַאדֹנָיו, וְהַשּׁוֹר, יִסָּקֵל.
im-eved yiggakh hashshor, o amah--kesef sheloshim shekalim, yitten la'adonav, vehashshor, yissakel.
If the ox gore a bondman or a bondwoman, he shall give unto their master thirty shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned.
33.
וְכִי-יִפְתַּח אִישׁ בּוֹר, אוֹ כִּי-יִכְרֶה אִישׁ בֹּר--וְלֹא יְכַסֶּנּוּ; וְנָפַל-שָׁמָּה שּׁוֹר, אוֹ חֲמוֹר.
ve'chi-yiftakh ish bor, o ki-yikhreh ish bor--velo yekasennu; venafal-shammah shor, o khamor.
And if a man shall open a pit, or if a man shall dig a pit and not cover it, and an ox or an ass fall therein,
34.
בַּעַל הַבּוֹר יְשַׁלֵּם, כֶּסֶף יָשִׁיב לִבְעָלָיו; וְהַמֵּת, יִהְיֶה-לּוֹ.
ba'al habbor yeshalem, kesef yashiv liv'alav; vehammet, yihyeh-llo.
the owner of the pit shall make it good; he shall give money unto the owner of them, and the dead beast shall be his.
35.
וְכִי-יִגֹּף שׁוֹר-אִישׁ אֶת-שׁוֹר רֵעֵהוּ, וָמֵת--וּמָכְרוּ אֶת-הַשּׁוֹר הַחַי, וְחָצוּ אֶת-כַּסְפּוֹ, וְגַם אֶת-הַמֵּת, יֶחֱצוּן.
ve'chi-yigof shor-'ish et-shor re'ehu, vamet--umakhru et-hashor hakhay, vekhatsu et-kaspo, vegam et-hamet, yekhetsun.
And if one man's ox hurt another's, so that it dieth; then they shall sell the live ox, and divide the price of it; and the dead also they shall divide.
36.
אוֹ נוֹדַע, כִּי שׁוֹר נַגָּח הוּא מִתְּמוֹל שִׁלְשֹׁם, וְלֹא יִשְׁמְרֶנּוּ, בְּעָלָיו--שַׁלֵּם יְשַׁלֵּם שׁוֹר תַּחַת הַשּׁוֹר, וְהַמֵּת יִהְיֶה-לּוֹ.
O noda, ki shor naggach hu mittemol shilshom, ve'lo yishmerennu, be'alav--shallem yeshallem shor takhat hashshor, vehammet yihyeh-llo.
Or if it be known that the ox was wont to gore in time past, and its owner hath not kept it in; he shall surely pay ox for ox, and the dead beast shall be his own.
37.
כִּי יִגְנֹב-אִישׁ שׁוֹר אוֹ-שֶׂה, וּטְבָחוֹ אוֹ מְכָרוֹ--חֲמִשָּׁה בָקָר, יְשַׁלֵּם תַּחַת הַשּׁוֹר, וְאַרְבַּע-צֹאן, תַּחַת הַשֶּׂה.
ki yignov-ish shor o-seh, utvacho o mekaro--khamishah vakar, yeshalem takhat hashor, ve'arba-tzon, takhat hasseh.
If a man steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it, he shall pay five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.
