1.
וַיֹּאמְרוּ בְנֵי-הַנְּבִיאִים, אֶל-אֱלִישָׁע: הִנֵּה-נָא הַמָּקוֹם, אֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ יֹשְׁבִים שָׁם לְפָנֶיךָ--צַר מִמֶּנּוּ.
vayomru venei-hanevi'im, el-elisha: hine-na hammakom, asher anakhnu yoshvim sham lefanekha--tsar mimennu.
And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha: 'Behold now, the place where we dwell before thee is too strait for us.
2.
נֵלְכָה-נָּא עַד-הַיַּרְדֵּן, וְנִקְחָה מִשָּׁם אִישׁ קוֹרָה אֶחָת, וְנַעֲשֶׂה-לָּנוּ שָׁם מָקוֹם, לָשֶׁבֶת שָׁם; וַיֹּאמֶר, לֵכוּ.
nelekh-na ad-hayarden, venikha misham ish korah akhat, vana'aseh-lanu sham makom, lashevet sham; vayomer, lekhu.
Let us go, we pray thee, unto the Jordan, and take thence every man a beam, and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell.' And he answered: 'Go ye.'
3.
וַיֹּאמֶר, הָאֶחָד, הוֹאֶל נָא, וְלֵךְ אֶת-עֲבָדֶיךָ; וַיֹּאמֶר, אֲנִי אֵלֵךְ.
vayomer, ha'echad, ho'el na, velech et-avadeykha; vayomer, ani elekh.
And one said: 'Be content, I pray thee, and go with thy servants.' And he answered: 'I will go.'
4.
וַיֵּלֶךְ, אִתָּם; וַיָּבֹאוּ, הַיַּרְדֵּנָה, וַיִּגְזְרוּ, הָעֵצִים.
vayelekh, itam; vayavo'u, hayardenah, vayigzeru, ha'etzim.
So he went with them. And when they came to the Jordan, they cut down wood.
5.
וַיְהִי הָאֶחָד מַפִּיל הַקּוֹרָה, וְאֶת-הַבַּרְזֶל נָפַל אֶל-הַמָּיִם; וַיִּצְעַק וַיֹּאמֶר אֲהָהּ אֲדֹנִי, וְהוּא שָׁאוּל.
vayhi ha'echad mapil haqorah, ve'et-habarzel nafal el-hamayim; vayitza'ak vayomer ahah adoni, vehu sha'ul.
But as one was felling a beam, the axe-head fell into the water; and he cried, and said: 'Alas, my master! for it was borrowed.'
6.
וַיֹּאמֶר אִישׁ-הָאֱלֹהִים, אָנָה נָפָל; וַיַּרְאֵהוּ, אֶת-הַמָּקוֹם, וַיִּקְצָב-עֵץ וַיַּשְׁלֶךְ-שָׁמָּה, וַיָּצֶף הַבַּרְזֶל.
vayomer ish-ha'elohim, ana nafal; vayar'ehu, et-hamakom, vayiktzav-etz vayashlekh-shamah, vayatzef habarzel.
And the man of God said: 'Where fell it?' And he showed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither, and made the iron to swim.
7.
וַיֹּאמֶר, הָרֶם לָךְ; וַיִּשְׁלַח יָדוֹ, וַיִּקָּחֵהוּ.
vayomer, harem lakh; vayishlakh yado, vayikkakhehu.
And he said: 'Take it up to thee.' So he put out his hand, and took it.
8.
וּמֶלֶךְ אֲרָם, הָיָה נִלְחָם בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיִּוָּעַץ אֶל-עֲבָדָיו לֵאמֹר, אֶל-מְקוֹם פְּלֹנִי אַלְמֹנִי תַּחֲנֹתִי.
umelekh aram, hayah nilkham beyisrael; vayivva'atz el-avadav lemor, el-mekom peloni almoni takhhanoti.
Now the king of Aram warred against Israel; and he took counsel with his servants, saying: 'In such and such a place shall be my camp.'
9.
וַיִּשְׁלַח אִישׁ הָאֱלֹהִים, אֶל-מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל לֵאמֹר, הִשָּׁמֶר, מֵעֲבֹר הַמָּקוֹם הַזֶּה: כִּי-שָׁם, אֲרָם נְחִתִּים.
vayishlakh ish haelohim, el-melekh yisrael lemor, hishamer, me'avor hammakom hazzeh: ki-sham, aram nekhittim.
And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel, saying: 'Beware that thou pass not such a place; for thither the Arameans are coming down.'
10.
וַיִּשְׁלַח מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל, אֶל-הַמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר אָמַר-לוֹ אִישׁ-הָאֱלֹהִים וְהִזְהִירֹה--וְנִשְׁמַר שָׁם: לֹא אַחַת, וְלֹא שְׁתָּיִם.
vayishlakh melekh yisrael, el-hammakom asher amar-lo ish-haelohim vehizhiro--venishmar sham: lo akhat, velo shetayim.
And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of; and he guarded himself there, not once nor twice.
11.
וַיִּסָּעֵר לֵב מֶלֶךְ-אֲרָם, עַל-הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה; וַיִּקְרָא אֶל-עֲבָדָיו, וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם, הֲלוֹא תַּגִּידוּ לִי, מִי מִשֶּׁלָּנוּ אֶל-מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל.
vayisa'er lev melekh-aram, 'al-haddavar hazzeh; vayyiqra el-'avadav, vayyomer aleihem, halo taggidu li, mi mishellanu el-melekh yisrael.
And the heart of the king of Aram was sore troubled for this thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them: 'Will ye not tell me which of us is for the king of Israel?'
12.
וַיֹּאמֶר אַחַד מֵעֲבָדָיו, לוֹא אֲדֹנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ: כִּי-אֱלִישָׁע הַנָּבִיא, אֲשֶׁר בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, יַגִּיד לְמֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל, אֶת-הַדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר תְּדַבֵּר בַּחֲדַר מִשְׁכָּבֶךָ.
vayyomer achat me'avadav, lo adoni hammelekh: ki-elisha hannavi, asher beyisrael, yaggid lemelekh yisrael, et-haddvarim asher tdabber bachadar mishkavekha.
And one of his servants said: 'Nay, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bed-chamber.'
13.
וַיֹּאמֶר, לְכוּ וּרְאוּ אֵיכֹה הוּא, וְאֶשְׁלַח, וְאֶקָּחֵהוּ; וַיֻּגַּד-לוֹ לֵאמֹר, הִנֵּה בְדֹתָן.
vayyomer, lekhu ure'u eikho hu, ve'eshlakh, ve'eqqachehu; vayyuggad-lo lemor, hinneh vedotan.
And he said: 'Go and see where he is, that I may send and fetch him.' And it was told him, saying: 'Behold, he is in Dothan.'
14.
וַיִּשְׁלַח-שָׁמָּה סוּסִים וְרֶכֶב, וְחַיִל כָּבֵד; וַיָּבֹאוּ לַיְלָה, וַיַּקִּפוּ עַל-הָעִיר.
vayyishlakh-shamma susim verekhev, vechayil kaved; vayyavo'u layla, vayyaqqufu 'al-ha'ir.
Therefore sent he thither horses, and chariots, and a great host; and they came by night, and compassed the city about.
15.
וַיַּשְׁכֵּם מְשָׁרֵת אִישׁ הָאֱלֹהִים, לָקוּם, וַיֵּצֵא, וְהִנֵּה-חַיִל סוֹבֵב אֶת-הָעִיר וְסוּס וָרָכֶב; וַיֹּאמֶר נַעֲרוֹ אֵלָיו אֲהָהּ אֲדֹנִי, אֵיכָה נַעֲשֶׂה.
vayashkem mesheret ish ha'Elohim lakum vayetze vehineh-chayil sovev et-ha'ir vesus varakev vayomer na'aro elav ahah adoni eikhah na'aseh.
And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, a host with horses and chariots was round about the city. And his servant said unto him: 'Alas, my master! how shall we do?'
16.
וַיֹּאמֶר, אַל-תִּירָא: כִּי רַבִּים אֲשֶׁר אִתָּנוּ, מֵאֲשֶׁר אוֹתָם.
vayomer al-tira ki rabim asher itanu me'asher otam.
And he answered: 'Fear not: for they that are with us are more than they that are with them.'
17.
וַיִּתְפַּלֵּל אֱלִישָׁע, וַיֹּאמַר, יְהוָה, פְּקַח-נָא אֶת-עֵינָיו וְיִרְאֶה; וַיִּפְקַח יְהוָה, אֶת-עֵינֵי הַנַּעַר, וַיַּרְא וְהִנֵּה הָהָר מָלֵא סוּסִים וְרֶכֶב אֵשׁ, סְבִיבֹת אֱלִישָׁע.
vayitpallel Elisha vayomer YHWH pekach-na et-einav veyir'eh vayifkach YHWH et-einei hana'ar vayar vehineh hahar male susim verekev esh sevivot Elisha.
And Elisha prayed, and said: 'LORD, I pray Thee, open his eyes, that he may see.' And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw; and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.
18.
וַיֵּרְדוּ, אֵלָיו, וַיִּתְפַּלֵּל אֱלִישָׁע אֶל-יְהוָה וַיֹּאמַר, הַךְ-נָא אֶת-הַגּוֹי-הַזֶּה בַּסַּנְוֵרִים; וַיַּכֵּם בַּסַּנְוֵרִים, כִּדְבַר אֱלִישָׁע.
vayeredu elav vayitpallel Elisha el-YHWH vayomer hak-na et-hagoy-hazeh basanverim vayakem basanverim kidvar Elisha.
And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the LORD, and said: 'Smite this people, I pray Thee, with blindness.' And He smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.
19.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם אֱלִישָׁע, לֹא זֶה הַדֶּרֶךְ וְלֹא זֹה הָעִיר--לְכוּ אַחֲרַי, וְאוֹלִיכָה אֶתְכֶם אֶל-הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר תְּבַקֵּשׁוּן; וַיֹּלֶךְ אוֹתָם, שֹׁמְרוֹנָה.
vayomer alehem elisha, lo zeh haderekh velo zoh ha'ir--lekhu acharay, ve'olikha etkhem el-ha'ish asher tevakeshun; vayolekh otam, shomronah.
And Elisha said unto them: 'This is not the way, neither is this the city; follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek.' And he led them to Samaria.
20.
וַיְהִי, כְּבֹאָם שֹׁמְרוֹן, וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלִישָׁע, יְהוָה פְּקַח אֶת-עֵינֵי-אֵלֶּה וְיִרְאוּ; וַיִּפְקַח יְהוָה, אֶת-עֵינֵיהֶם, וַיִּרְאוּ, וְהִנֵּה בְּתוֹךְ שֹׁמְרוֹן.
vayhi, kevo'am shomron, vayomer elisha, Adonai pekakh et-einei-eleh veyir'u; vayifpakh Adonai, et-eineihem, vayir'u, vehinneh betokh shomron.
And it came to pass, when they were come into Samaria, that Elisha said: 'LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see.' And the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.
21.
וַיֹּאמֶר מֶלֶךְ-יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל-אֱלִישָׁע, כִּרְאֹתוֹ אוֹתָם: הַאַכֶּה אַכֶּה, אָבִי.
vayomer melekh-yisrael el-elisha, kir'oto otam: ha'akkeh akheh, avi.
And the king of Israel said unto Elisha, when he saw them: 'My father, shall I smite them? shall I smite them?'
22.
וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא תַכֶּה, הַאֲשֶׁר שָׁבִיתָ בְּחַרְבְּךָ וּבְקַשְׁתְּךָ אַתָּה מַכֶּה; שִׂים לֶחֶם וָמַיִם לִפְנֵיהֶם, וְיֹאכְלוּ וְיִשְׁתּוּ, וְיֵלְכוּ, אֶל-אֲדֹנֵיהֶם.
vayomer lo takkeh, ha'asher shavita bekharbekha uvekhashtekha attah makheh; sim lekhem umayim lifneihem, veyokhelu veyishtu, veyelekhu, el-adoneihem.
And he answered: 'Thou shalt not smite them; hast thou taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow those whom thou wouldest smite? set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.'
23.
וַיִּכְרֶה לָהֶם כֵּרָה גְדוֹלָה, וַיֹּאכְלוּ וַיִּשְׁתּוּ, וַיְשַׁלְּחֵם, וַיֵּלְכוּ אֶל-אֲדֹנֵיהֶם; וְלֹא-יָסְפוּ עוֹד גְּדוּדֵי אֲרָם, לָבוֹא בְּאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל.
vayikhreh lahem kerah gedolah, vayokhlu vayishtu, vayshalchem, vayelkhu el-adoneihem; velo-yasfu od gedudei aram, lavo be'eretz Yisrael.
And he prepared great provision for them; and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. And the bands of Aram came no more into the land of Israel.
24.
וַיְהִי, אַחֲרֵי-כֵן, וַיִּקְבֹּץ בֶּן-הֲדַד מֶלֶךְ-אֲרָם, אֶת-כָּל-מַחֲנֵהוּ; וַיַּעַל, וַיָּצַר עַל-שֹׁמְרוֹן.
vayhi, akharei-khen, vayikbֹtz ben-hadad melekh-aram, et-kol-makhanehu; vaya'al, vayatzar al-shomron.
And it came to pass after this, that Ben-hadad king of Aram gathered all his host, and went up, and besieged Samaria.
25.
וַיְהִי רָעָב גָּדוֹל בְּשֹׁמְרוֹן, וְהִנֵּה צָרִים עָלֶיהָ: עַד הֱיוֹת רֹאשׁ-חֲמוֹר בִּשְׁמֹנִים כֶּסֶף, וְרֹבַע הַקַּב חרי דִּב- יוֹנִים בַּחֲמִשָּׁה-כָסֶף.
vayhi ra'av gadol beshomron, vehineh tzarim aleha: ad heyot rosh-chamor bishmonim kesef, verova ha-qab chri div- yonim bakhamishah-khasef.
And there was a great famine in Samaria; and, behold, they besieged it, until an ass's head was sold for fourscore pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a kab of dove's dung for five pieces of silver.
26.
וַיְהִי מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל, עֹבֵר עַל-הַחֹמָה; וְאִשָּׁה, צָעֲקָה אֵלָיו לֵאמֹר, הוֹשִׁיעָה, אֲדֹנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ.
vayhi melekh Yisrael, over al-hakhomah; ve'ishah, tza'akah elav lemor, hoshi'ah, adoni hamelekh.
And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, there cried a woman unto him, saying: 'Help, my lord, O king.'
27.
וַיֹּאמֶר אַל-יוֹשִׁעֵךְ יְהוָה, מֵאַיִן אוֹשִׁיעֵךְ; הֲמִן-הַגֹּרֶן, אוֹ מִן-הַיָּקֶב.
Vayomer al-yoshi'ekh YHWH me'ayin oshi'ekh hamin-hagoren o min-hayakev.
And he said: 'If the LORD do not help thee, whence shall I help thee? out of the threshingfloor, or out of the winepress?'
28.
וַיֹּאמֶר-לָהּ הַמֶּלֶךְ, מַה-לָּךְ; וַתֹּאמֶר, הָאִשָּׁה הַזֹּאת אָמְרָה אֵלַי תְּנִי אֶת-בְּנֵךְ וְנֹאכְלֶנּוּ הַיּוֹם, וְאֶת-בְּנִי, נֹאכַל מָחָר.
Vayomer-lah hamelekh mah-lakh vatomer ha'ishah hazot amrah elay teni et-bnekh venokhelenu hayom ve'et-bni nokhal makhar.
And the king said unto her: 'What aileth thee?' And she answered: 'This woman said unto me: Give thy son, that we may eat him to-day, and we will eat my son to-morrow.
29.
וַנְּבַשֵּׁל אֶת-בְּנִי, וַנֹּאכְלֵהוּ; וָאֹמַר אֵלֶיהָ בַּיּוֹם הָאַחֵר, תְּנִי אֶת-בְּנֵךְ וְנֹאכְלֶנּוּ, וַתַּחְבִּא, אֶת-בְּנָהּ.
Vanevashel et-bni vanokhlehu va'omar eleha bayom ha'acher teni et-bnekh venokhelenu vattakhbi et-bnah.
So we boiled my son, and did eat him; and I said unto her on the next day: Give thy son, that we may eat him; and she hath hid her son.'
30.
וַיְהִי כִשְׁמֹעַ הַמֶּלֶךְ אֶת-דִּבְרֵי הָאִשָּׁה, וַיִּקְרַע אֶת-בְּגָדָיו, וְהוּא, עֹבֵר עַל-הַחֹמָה; וַיַּרְא הָעָם, וְהִנֵּה הַשַּׂק עַל-בְּשָׂרוֹ מִבָּיִת.
Vayehi khishmo'a hamelekh et-divrei ha'ishah vayikra et-begadav vehu over al-hakhomah vayar ha'am vehineh hasak al-besaroh mibayis.
And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the woman, that he rent his clothes--now he was passing by upon the wall--and the people looked, and, behold, he had sackcloth within upon his flesh.
31.
וַיֹּאמֶר, כֹּה-יַעֲשֶׂה-לִּי אֱלֹהִים וְכֹה יוֹסִף: אִם-יַעֲמֹד רֹאשׁ אֱלִישָׁע בֶּן-שָׁפָט, עָלָיו--הַיּוֹם.
vayomer, koh-ya'aseh-li elohim vekoh yosif: im-ya'amod rosh elisha ben-shafat, alav--hayom.
Then he said: 'God do so to me, and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day.'
32.
וֶאֱלִישָׁע יֹשֵׁב בְּבֵיתוֹ, וְהַזְּקֵנִים יֹשְׁבִים אִתּוֹ; וַיִּשְׁלַח אִישׁ מִלְּפָנָיו, בְּטֶרֶם יָבֹא הַמַּלְאָךְ אֵלָיו וְהוּא אָמַר אֶל-הַזְּקֵנִים הַרְּאִיתֶם כִּי-שָׁלַח בֶּן-הַמְרַצֵּחַ הַזֶּה לְהָסִיר אֶת-רֹאשִׁי, רְאוּ כְּבֹא הַמַּלְאָךְ סִגְרוּ הַדֶּלֶת וּלְחַצְתֶּם אֹתוֹ בַּדֶּלֶת, הֲלוֹא קוֹל רַגְלֵי אֲדֹנָיו אַחֲרָיו.
ve'elisha yoshev beveito, vehazkenim yoshvim ito; vayishlach ish millefanav, beterem yavo hamal'akh elav vehu amar el-hazkenim har'item ki-shalakh ben-hamratze'akh hazeh lehasir et-roshi, re'u kevo hamal'akh siglo hadelet ulechatstem oto badelet, helo kol raglei adonav acharav.
But Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man from before him; but ere the messenger came to him, he said to the elders: 'See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away my head? look, when the messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold the door fast against him; is not the sound of his master's feet behind him?'
33.
עוֹדֶנּוּ מְדַבֵּר עִמָּם, וְהִנֵּה הַמַּלְאָךְ יֹרֵד אֵלָיו; וַיֹּאמֶר, הִנֵּה-זֹאת הָרָעָה מֵאֵת יְהוָה--מָה-אוֹחִיל לַיהוָה, עוֹד.
odennu medaber imam, vehineh hamal'akh yored elav; vayomer, hineh-zot hara'ah me'et YHWH--mah-ochil laYHWH, od.
And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him; and [the king] said: 'Behold, this evil is of the LORD; why should I wait for the LORD any longer?'
