1.
וַיְהִי לִיהוֹשָׁפָט עֹשֶׁר וְכָבוֹד, לָרֹב; וַיִּתְחַתֵּן, לְאַחְאָב.
vayhi lihoshafat osher vekhavod larov vayithaten le'akhav
Now Jehoshaphat had riches and honour in abundance; and he allied himself with Ahab by marriage.
2.
וַיֵּרֶד לְקֵץ שָׁנִים אֶל-אַחְאָב, לְשֹׁמְרוֹן, וַיִּזְבַּח-לוֹ אַחְאָב צֹאן וּבָקָר לָרֹב, וְלָעָם אֲשֶׁר עִמּוֹ; וַיְסִיתֵהוּ, לַעֲלוֹת אֶל-רָמֹת גִּלְעָד.
vayered leqets shanim el-akhav leshomron vayizbakh-lo akhav tson uvakar larov vela'am asher imo vayasitehu la'alot el-ramot gil'ad
And after a lapse of years he went down to Ahab to Samaria. And Ahab killed sheep and oxen for him in abundance, and for the people that were with him, and persuaded him to go up with him to Ramoth-gilead.

וַיֹּאמֶר אַחְאָב מֶלֶךְ-יִשְׂרָאֵל, אֶל-יְהוֹשָׁפָט מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה, הֲתֵלֵךְ עִמִּי, רָמֹת גִּלְעָד; וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ, כָּמוֹנִי כָמוֹךָ וּכְעַמְּךָ עַמִּי--וְעִמְּךָ, בַּמִּלְחָמָה.
vayomer akhav melekh-yisrael el-yehoshafat melekh yehuda hatelekh imi ramot gil'ad vayomer lo kamoni khamokha ukhe'amkha ami ve'imkha bamilkhama
And Ahab king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat king of Judah: 'Wilt thou go with me to Ramoth-gilead?' And he answered him: 'I am as thou art, and my people as thy people; and we will be with thee in the war.'
4.
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוֹשָׁפָט, אֶל-מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל: דְּרָשׁ-נָא כַיּוֹם, אֶת-דְּבַר יְהוָה.
vayomer yehoshafat el-melekh yisrael derash-na kayom et-davar YHWH
And Jehoshaphat said unto the king of Israel: 'Inquire, I pray thee, at the word of the LORD today.'

וַיִּקְבֹּץ מֶלֶךְ-יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת-הַנְּבִאִים, אַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת אִישׁ, וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם הֲנֵלֵךְ אֶל-רָמֹת גִּלְעָד לַמִּלְחָמָה, אִם-אֶחְדָּל; וַיֹּאמְרוּ עֲלֵה, וְיִתֵּן הָאֱלֹהִים בְּיַד הַמֶּלֶךְ.
vayikbatz melekh-Yisrael et-hanevi'im, arba me'ot ish, vayomer alehem hanelem el-ramot Gil'ad lamilhamah, im-ehdal; vayomru aleh, veyiten haElohim beyad hamelekh.
Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, four hundred men, and said unto them: 'Shall we go to Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall I forbear?' And they said: 'Go up; for God will deliver it into the hand of the king.'
6.
וַיֹּאמֶר, יְהוֹשָׁפָט, הַאֵין פֹּה נָבִיא לַיהוָה, עוֹד; וְנִדְרְשָׁה, מֵאֹתוֹ.
vayomer, Yehoshafat, ha'ein poh navi laYHWH, od; venidreshah, me'oto.
But Jehoshaphat said: 'Is there not here besides a prophet of the LORD, that we might inquire of him?'
7.
וַיֹּאמֶר מֶלֶךְ-יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל-יְהוֹשָׁפָט עוֹד אִישׁ-אֶחָד לִדְרוֹשׁ אֶת-יְהוָה מֵאֹתוֹ וַאֲנִי שְׂנֵאתִיהוּ, כִּי-אֵינֶנּוּ מִתְנַבֵּא עָלַי לְטוֹבָה כִּי כָל-יָמָיו לְרָעָה--הוּא, מִיכָיְהוּ בֶן-יִמְלָא; וַיֹּאמֶר, יְהוֹשָׁפָט, אַל-יֹאמַר הַמֶּלֶךְ, כֵּן.
vayomer melekh-Yisrael el-Yehoshafat od ish-ehchad lidrosh et-YHWH me'oto va'ani sene'tihu, ki-einennu mitnabe alay letovah ki khol-yamav lera'ah--hu, Mikhayhu ven-Yimla; vayomer, Yehoshafat, al-yomar hamelekh, ken.
And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat: 'There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of the LORD; but I hate him; for he never prophesieth good concerning me, but always evil; the same is Micaiah the son of Imla.' And Jehoshaphat said: 'Let not the king say so.'
8.
וַיִּקְרָא מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל, אֶל-סָרִיס אֶחָד; וַיֹּאמֶר, מַהֵר מיכהו מִיכָיְהוּ בֶן-יִמְלָא.
vayikra melekh Yisrael, el-saris ehchad; vayomer, maher Mikhayhu ven-Yimla.
Then the king of Israel called an officer, and said: 'Fetch quickly Micaiah the son of Imla.'
9.
וּמֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל וִיהוֹשָׁפָט מֶלֶךְ-יְהוּדָה יוֹשְׁבִים אִישׁ עַל-כִּסְאוֹ מְלֻבָּשִׁים בְּגָדִים, וְיֹשְׁבִים בְּגֹרֶן--פֶּתַח, שַׁעַר שֹׁמְרוֹן; וְכָל-הַנְּבִיאִים--מִתְנַבְּאִים, לִפְנֵיהֶם.
umelekh yisrael viyehoshafat melekh-yehudah yoshvim ish al-kis'o melubashim begadim, veyoshvim begoren--petach, sha'ar shomron; vekhol-hanevi'im--mitnabe'im, lifneihem.
Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah sat each on his throne, arrayed in their robes, and they sat in a threshing-floor at the entrance of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets were prophesying before them.
10.
וַיַּעַשׂ לוֹ צִדְקִיָּהוּ בֶן-כְּנַעֲנָה, קַרְנֵי בַרְזֶל; וַיֹּאמֶר כֹּה-אָמַר יְהוָה, בְּאֵלֶּה תְּנַגַּח אֶת-אֲרָם עַד-כַּלּוֹתָם.
vaya'as lo tzidkiyahu ven-ken'anah, karnei barzel; vayomer koh-amar YHWH, be'elleh tenagach et-aram ad-kallotam.
And Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made him horns of iron, and said: 'Thus saith the LORD: With these shalt thou gore the Arameans, until they be consumed.'
11.
וְכָל-הַנְּבִאִים--נִבְּאִים כֵּן, לֵאמֹר: עֲלֵה רָמֹת גִּלְעָד, וְהַצְלַח, וְנָתַן יְהוָה, בְּיַד הַמֶּלֶךְ.
vekhol-hanevi'im--nibe'im ken, lemor: aleh ramot gil'ad, vehatzelach, venatan YHWH, beyad hamelekh.
And all the prophets prophesied so, saying: 'Go up to Ramoth-gilead, and prosper; for the LORD will deliver it into the hand of the king.'
12.
וְהַמַּלְאָךְ אֲשֶׁר-הָלַךְ לִקְרֹא לְמִיכָיְהוּ, דִּבֶּר אֵלָיו לֵאמֹר, הִנֵּה דִּבְרֵי הַנְּבִאִים פֶּה-אֶחָד טוֹב, אֶל-הַמֶּלֶךְ; וִיהִי-נָא דְבָרְךָ כְּאַחַד מֵהֶם, וְדִבַּרְתָּ טּוֹב.
vehammal'akh asher-halakh likro lemiikhayefhu, diber elav lemor, hinneh divrei hanevi'im peh-echad tov, el-hamelekh; vihi-na devarekha ke'achad mehem, vedibarta tov.
And the messenger that went to call Micaiah spoke to him, saying: 'Behold, the words of the prophets declare good to the king with one mouth; let thy word therefore, I pray thee, be like one of theirs, and speak thou good.'
13.
וַיֹּאמֶר, מִיכָיְהוּ: חַי-יְהוָה--כִּי אֶת-אֲשֶׁר-יֹאמַר אֱלֹהַי, אֹתוֹ אֲדַבֵּר.
vayomer Mikhayhu khay YHWH ki et asher yomar Elohay oto adaber
And Micaiah said: 'As the LORD liveth, what my God saith, that will I speak.'
14.
וַיָּבֹא, אֶל-הַמֶּלֶךְ, וַיֹּאמֶר הַמֶּלֶךְ אֵלָיו מִיכָה הֲנֵלֵךְ אֶל-רָמֹת גִּלְעָד לַמִּלְחָמָה, אִם-אֶחְדָּל; וַיֹּאמֶר עֲלוּ וְהַצְלִיחוּ, וְיִנָּתְנוּ בְּיֶדְכֶם.
vayavo el hamelekh vayomer hamelekh elav Mikha hanelekh el Ramot Gil'ad lamilkhama im ekhtal vayomer alu vehatzlikhu veyinatenu beyedKhem
And when he was come to the king, the king said unto him: 'Micaiah, shall we go to Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall I forbear?' And he said: 'Go ye up, and prosper; and they shall be delivered into your hand.'
15.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו הַמֶּלֶךְ, עַד-כַּמֶּה פְעָמִים אֲנִי מַשְׁבִּיעֶךָ: אֲשֶׁר לֹא-תְדַבֵּר אֵלַי, רַק-אֱמֶת--בְּשֵׁם יְהוָה.
vayomer elav hamelekh ad kameh pe'amim ani mashbi'ekha asher lo tedaber elay rak emet beshem YHWH
And the king said to him: 'How many times shall I adjure thee that thou speak unto me nothing but the truth in the name of the LORD.'
16.
וַיֹּאמֶר, רָאִיתִי אֶת-כָּל-יִשְׂרָאֵל נְפוֹצִים עַל-הֶהָרִים--כַּצֹּאן, אֲשֶׁר אֵין-לָהֶן רֹעֶה; וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה לֹא-אֲדֹנִים לָאֵלֶּה, יָשׁוּבוּ אִישׁ-לְבֵיתוֹ בְּשָׁלוֹם.
vayomer ra'iti et kol Yisrael nefotzim al heharim katzon asher ein lahen ro'eh vayomer YHWH lo adonim la'eleh yashuvu ish leveito beshalom
And he said: 'I saw all Israel scattered upon the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd; and the LORD said: These have no master, let them return every man to his house in peace.'
17.
וַיֹּאמֶר מֶלֶךְ-יִשְׂרָאֵל, אֶל-יְהוֹשָׁפָט: הֲלֹא אָמַרְתִּי אֵלֶיךָ, לֹא-יִתְנַבֵּא עָלַי טוֹב כִּי אִם-לְרָע.
vayomer melekh-Yisrael, el-Yehoshafat: halo amarti eleykha, lo-yitnabe alay tov ki im-lera.
And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat: 'Did I not tell thee that he would not prophesy good concerning me, but evil?'
18.
וַיֹּאמֶר, לָכֵן שִׁמְעוּ דְבַר-יְהוָה: רָאִיתִי אֶת-יְהוָה, יוֹשֵׁב עַל-כִּסְאוֹ, וְכָל-צְבָא הַשָּׁמַיִם עֹמְדִים, עַל-יְמִינוֹ וּשְׂמֹאלוֹ.
vayomer, lakhen shim'u devar-YHWH: ra'iti et-YHWH, yoshev al-kis'o, vekhol-tsva hashamayim omdim, al-yemino usm'olo.
And he said: 'Therefore hear ye the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting upon His throne, and all the host of heaven standing on His right hand and on His left.
19.
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה, מִי יְפַתֶּה אֶת-אַחְאָב מֶלֶךְ-יִשְׂרָאֵל, וְיַעַל, וְיִפֹּל בְּרָמוֹת גִּלְעָד; וַיֹּאמֶר--זֶה אֹמֵר כָּכָה, וְזֶה אֹמֵר כָּכָה.
vayomer YHWH, mi yefateh et-Ach'av melekh-Yisrael, veya'al, veyipol beramot Gil'ad; vayomer--zeh omer kakhah, vezeh omer kakhah.
And the LORD said: who shall entice Ahab king of Israel, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead? And one spoke saying after this manner, and another saying after that manner.
20.
וַיֵּצֵא הָרוּחַ, וַיַּעֲמֹד לִפְנֵי יְהוָה, וַיֹּאמֶר, אֲנִי אֲפַתֶּנּוּ: וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֵלָיו, בַּמָּה.
vayetse haru'ach, vaya'amod lifnei YHWH, vayomer, ani afatenu: vayomer YHWH elav, bamah.
And there came forth the spirit, and stood before the LORD, and said: I will entice him. And the LORD said unto him: Wherewith?
21.
וַיֹּאמֶר, אֵצֵא וְהָיִיתִי לְרוּחַ שֶׁקֶר, בְּפִי, כָּל-נְבִיאָיו; וַיֹּאמֶר, תְּפַתֶּה וְגַם-תּוּכָל--צֵא, וַעֲשֵׂה-כֵן.
vayomer, etzei vehayiti leruach sheker, befi, kol-neviav; vayomer, tefatteh vegam-tuchal--tsei, va'aseh-ken.
And he said: I will go forth, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And He said: Thou shalt entice him, and shalt prevail also; go forth, and do so.
22.
וְעַתָּה, הִנֵּה נָתַן יְהוָה רוּחַ שֶׁקֶר, בְּפִי, נְבִיאֶיךָ אֵלֶּה; וַיהוָה, דִּבֶּר עָלֶיךָ רָעָה.
ve'atah, hinneh natan YHWH ruach sheker, befi, nevi'ekha elleh; vaYHWH, dibber aleykha ra'ah.
Now therefore, behold, the LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of these thy prophets; and the LORD hath spoken evil concerning thee.'
23.
וַיִּגַּשׁ צִדְקִיָּהוּ בֶן-כְּנַעֲנָה, וַיַּךְ אֶת-מִיכָיְהוּ עַל-הַלֶּחִי; וַיֹּאמֶר, אֵי זֶה הַדֶּרֶךְ עָבַר רוּחַ-יְהוָה מֵאִתִּי--לְדַבֵּר אֹתָךְ.
vayiggash tzidkiyahu ven-kenanah, vayakh et-michayhu al-halechi; vayomer, ei zeh haderekh avar ruach-YHWH me'itti--ledabber otakh.
Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near, and smote Micaiah upon the cheek, and said: 'Which way went the spirit of the LORD from me to speak unto thee?'
24.
וַיֹּאמֶר מִיכָיְהוּ, הִנְּךָ רֹאֶה בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא, אֲשֶׁר תָּבוֹא חֶדֶר בְּחֶדֶר, לְהֵחָבֵא.
vayomer michayhu, hinnkha ro'eh bayyom hahu, asher tavo cheder becheder, lehechave.
And Micaiah said: 'Behold, thou shalt see on that day, when thou shalt go into an inner chamber to hide thyself.'
25.
וַיֹּאמֶר, מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל, קְחוּ אֶת-מִיכָיְהוּ, וַהֲשִׁיבֻהוּ אֶל-אָמוֹן שַׂר-הָעִיר--וְאֶל-יוֹאָשׁ, בֶּן-הַמֶּלֶךְ.
vayomer, melekh yisrael, qechu et-mikhayehu, vahashevuhu el-amon sar-hair--veel-yoash, ben-hamelekh.
And the king of Israel said: 'Take ye Micaiah; and carry him back unto Amon the governor of the city, and to Joash the king's son;
26.
וַאֲמַרְתֶּם, כֹּה אָמַר הַמֶּלֶךְ, שִׂימוּ זֶה, בֵּית הַכֶּלֶא; וְהַאֲכִלֻהוּ לֶחֶם לַחַץ, וּמַיִם לַחַץ, עַד, שׁוּבִי בְשָׁלוֹם.
vaamartem, koh amar hamelekh, simu zeh, beit hakele; vahaakiluhu lehem lahatz, umayim lahatz, ad, shuvi veshalom.
and say: Thus saith the king: Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with scant bread and with scant water, until I return in peace.'
27.
וַיֹּאמֶר מִיכָיְהוּ--אִם-שׁוֹב תָּשׁוּב בְּשָׁלוֹם, לֹא-דִבֶּר יְהוָה בִּי; וַיֹּאמֶר, שִׁמְעוּ עַמִּים כֻּלָּם.
vayomer mikhayehu--im-shov tashuv beshalom, lo-diber YHWH bi; vayomer, shim'u amim kullam.
And Micaiah said: 'If thou return at all in peace, the LORD hath not spoken by me.' And he said: 'Hear, ye peoples, all of you.'
28.
וַיַּעַל מֶלֶךְ-יִשְׂרָאֵל וִיהוֹשָׁפָט מֶלֶךְ-יְהוּדָה, אֶל-רָמֹת גִּלְעָד.
vayaal melekh-yisrael vihoshafat melekh-yehudah, el-ramot gilad.
So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to Ramoth-gilead.
29.
וַיֹּאמֶר מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל-יְהוֹשָׁפָט, הִתְחַפֵּשׂ וָבוֹא בַמִּלְחָמָה, וְאַתָּה, לְבַשׁ בְּגָדֶיךָ; וַיִּתְחַפֵּשׂ מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל, וַיָּבֹאוּ בַּמִּלְחָמָה.
vayomer melekh Yisrael el-Yehoshafat, hitkhapesH vavo vamilkhamah, ve'atah, levash begadeykha; vayitkhapesH melekh Yisrael, vayavo'u bamilkhamah.
And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat: 'I will disguise myself, and go into the battle; but put thou on thy robes.' So the king of Israel disguised himself; and they went into the battle.
30.
וּמֶלֶךְ אֲרָם צִוָּה אֶת-שָׂרֵי הָרֶכֶב אֲשֶׁר-לוֹ, לֵאמֹר, לֹא תִּלָּחֲמוּ, אֶת-הַקָּטֹן אֶת-הַגָּדוֹל: כִּי אִם-אֶת-מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל, לְבַדּוֹ.
umelekh Aram tzivah et-sarei harekhev asher-lo, lemor, lo tilakhamu, et-haqaton et-ha-gadol: ki im-et-melekh Yisrael, levado.
Now the king of Aram had commanded the captains of his chariots, saying: 'Fight neither with small nor great, save only with the king of Israel.'
31.
וַיְהִי כִּרְאוֹת שָׂרֵי הָרֶכֶב אֶת-יְהוֹשָׁפָט, וְהֵמָּה אָמְרוּ מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל הוּא, וַיָּסֹבּוּ עָלָיו, לְהִלָּחֵם; וַיִּזְעַק יְהוֹשָׁפָט וַיהוָה עֲזָרוֹ, וַיְסִיתֵם אֱלֹהִים מִמֶּנּוּ.
vayhi kir'ot sarei harekhev et-Yehoshafat, vehemah amru melekh Yisrael hu, vayasobu alayiv, lehilakhem; vayiz'aq Yehoshafat vAdonai azaro, vayasitem Elohim mimenu.
And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, that they said: 'It is the king of Israel.' Therefore they turned about to fight against him; but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped him; and God moved them to depart from him.
32.
וַיְהִי, כִּרְאוֹת שָׂרֵי הָרֶכֶב, כִּי לֹא-הָיָה, מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל--וַיָּשׁוּבוּ, מֵאַחֲרָיו.
vayhi, kir'ot sarei harekhev, ki lo-hayah, melekh Yisrael--vayashuvu, me'akharayiv.
And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw that it was not the king of Israel, that they turned back from pursuing him.
33.
וְאִישׁ, מָשַׁךְ בַּקֶּשֶׁת לְתֻמּוֹ, וַיַּךְ אֶת-מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל, בֵּין הַדְּבָקִים וּבֵין הַשִּׁרְיָן; וַיֹּאמֶר לָרַכָּב, הֲפֹךְ ידיך יָדְךָ וְהוֹצֵאתַנִי מִן-הַמַּחֲנֶה--כִּי הָחֳלֵיתִי.
ve'ish, mashakh baqeshet letummo, vayakh et-melekh Yisrael, bein hadevaqim uvein hashiryan; vayo'mer larakkav, hafokh yadkha yadekha vehotsetani min-hamakhaneh--ki hokhleti.
And a certain man drew his bow at a venture, and smote the king of Israel between the lower armour and the breastplate; wherefore he said to the driver of the chariot: 'Turn thy hand, and carry me out of the host; for I am sore wounded.'
34.
וַתַּעַל הַמִּלְחָמָה, בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא, וּמֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל הָיָה מַעֲמִיד בַּמֶּרְכָּבָה נֹכַח אֲרָם, עַד-הָעָרֶב; וַיָּמָת, לְעֵת בּוֹא הַשָּׁמֶשׁ.
vatta'al hamilkhamah, bayom hahu, umelekh Yisrael hayah ma'amid bamerkavah nokhakh Aram, ad-ha'arev; vayamat, le'et bo hashamesh.
And the battle increased that day; howbeit the king of Israel stayed himself up in his chariot against the Arameans until the even; and about the time of the going down of the sun he died.
