בִּשְׁנַת שְׁמוֹנֶה עֶשְׂרֵה, לַמֶּלֶךְ יָרָבְעָם; וַיִּמְלֹךְ אֲבִיָּה, עַל-יְהוּדָה.
bishnat shemoneh esreh la'melekh Yarov'am; vayyמlok Aviyah al Yehudah.
In the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam began Abijah to reign over Judah.

שָׁלוֹשׁ שָׁנִים, מָלַךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִַם, וְשֵׁם אִמּוֹ, מִיכָיָהוּ בַת-אוּרִיאֵל מִן-גִּבְעָה; וּמִלְחָמָה הָיְתָה בֵּין אֲבִיָּה, וּבֵין יָרָבְעָם.
Shalosh shanim, malakh birushalayim, veshem immo, mikhayahu bat-uri'el min-giv'ah; umilkhamah hayetah bein aviyah, uvein yarov'am.
Three years reigned he in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Micaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.

וַיֶּאְסֹר אֲבִיָּה אֶת-הַמִּלְחָמָה, בְּחַיִל גִּבּוֹרֵי מִלְחָמָה, אַרְבַּע-מֵאוֹת אֶלֶף, אִישׁ בָּחוּר; וְיָרָבְעָם, עָרַךְ עִמּוֹ מִלְחָמָה, בִּשְׁמוֹנֶה מֵאוֹת אֶלֶף אִישׁ בָּחוּר, גִּבּוֹר חָיִל.
vayeksor aviyah et-hamilkhamah, bekhayil gibore milkhamah, arba-me'ot elef, ish bakhur; veyarov'am, arakh immo milkhamah, bishmoneh me'ot elef ish bakhur, gibor khayil.
And Abijah joined battle with an army of valiant men of war, even four hundred thousand chosen men; and Jeroboam set the battle in array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, who were mighty men of valour.
4.
וַיָּקָם אֲבִיָּה, מֵעַל לְהַר צְמָרַיִם, אֲשֶׁר, בְּהַר אֶפְרָיִם; וַיֹּאמֶר, שְׁמָעוּנִי יָרָבְעָם וְכָל-יִשְׂרָאֵל.
vayakam aviyah, me'al lehar tzmarayim, asher, behar efrayim; vayomer, shema'uni yarov'am vekhal-yisrael.
And Abijah stood up upon mount Zemaraim, which is in the hill-country of Ephraim, and said: 'Hear me, O Jeroboam and all Israel;
5.
הֲלֹא לָכֶם, לָדַעַת, כִּי יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל נָתַן מַמְלָכָה לְדָוִיד עַל-יִשְׂרָאֵל, לְעוֹלָם: לוֹ וּלְבָנָיו, בְּרִית מֶלַח.
halo lakhem, lada'at, ki YHWH Elohei Yisrael natan mamlakhah ledavid al-yisrael, le'olam: lo ulevanav, berit melakh.
ought ye not to know that the LORD, the God of Israel, gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?
6.
וַיָּקָם יָרָבְעָם בֶּן-נְבָט, עֶבֶד שְׁלֹמֹה בֶן-דָּוִיד; וַיִּמְרֹד, עַל-אֲדֹנָיו.
vayakom Yarov'am ben-Nvat, eved Shlomoh ben-David; vayimrod, al-adonav.
Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up, and rebelled against his lord.
7.
וַיִּקָּבְצוּ עָלָיו, אֲנָשִׁים רֵקִים בְּנֵי בְלִיַּעַל, וַיִּתְאַמְּצוּ, עַל-רְחַבְעָם בֶּן-שְׁלֹמֹה; וּרְחַבְעָם, הָיָה נַעַר וְרַךְ-לֵבָב, וְלֹא הִתְחַזַּק, לִפְנֵיהֶם.
vayikavtzu alav, anashim rekim bnei veliyal, vayit'amtzu, al-Rechav'am ben-Shlomoh; uRechav'am, hayah naar verakh-levav, velo hitchazak, lifneihem.
And there were gathered unto him vain men, base fellows that strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and faint-hearted, and could not withstand them.
8.
וְעַתָּה אַתֶּם אֹמְרִים, לְהִתְחַזֵּק לִפְנֵי מַמְלֶכֶת יְהוָה, בְּיַד, בְּנֵי דָוִיד; וְאַתֶּם, הָמוֹן רָב, וְעִמָּכֶם עֶגְלֵי זָהָב, אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה לָכֶם יָרָבְעָם לֵאלֹהִים.
ve'atah atem omrim, lehitchazek lifnei mamleket YHWH, beyad, bnei David; ve'atem, hamon rav, ve'imakhem eglei zahav, asher asah lachem Yarov'am lelohim.
And now ye think to withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David; and ye are a great multitude, and there are with you the golden calves which Jeroboam made you for gods.
9.
הֲלֹא הִדַּחְתֶּם אֶת-כֹּהֲנֵי יְהוָה, אֶת-בְּנֵי אַהֲרֹן וְהַלְוִיִּם; וַתַּעֲשׂוּ לָכֶם כֹּהֲנִים, כְּעַמֵּי הָאֲרָצוֹת--כָּל-הַבָּא לְמַלֵּא יָדוֹ בְּפַר בֶּן-בָּקָר וְאֵילִם שִׁבְעָה, וְהָיָה כֹהֵן לְלֹא אֱלֹהִים.
halo hidachtem et-kohanei YHWH, et-bnei Aharon vehalviyim; vata'asu lachem kohanim, ke'amei ha'aratzot--kol-haba lemalle yado befar ben-bakar ve'eilim shiv'ah, vehayah kohen lelo elohim.
Have ye not driven out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and have made you priests after the manner of the peoples of other lands? so that whosoever cometh to consecrate himself with a young bullock and seven rams, the same becometh a priest of them that are no gods.
10.
וַאֲנַחְנוּ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ, וְלֹא עֲזַבְנֻהוּ; וְכֹהֲנִים מְשָׁרְתִים לַיהוָה, בְּנֵי אַהֲרֹן, וְהַלְוִיִּם, בַּמְלָאכֶת.
va'anachnu YHWH Eloheinu, ve'lo azavnuhu; ve'kohanim mesharﺗim laYHWH, benei Aharon, ve'ha'levi'im, ba'mela'khet.
But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken Him; and we have priests ministering unto the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites in their work;
11.
וּמַקְטִרִים לַיהוָה עֹלוֹת בַּבֹּקֶר-בַּבֹּקֶר וּבָעֶרֶב-בָּעֶרֶב וּקְטֹרֶת-סַמִּים וּמַעֲרֶכֶת לֶחֶם עַל-הַשֻּׁלְחָן הַטָּהוֹר, וּמְנוֹרַת הַזָּהָב וְנֵרֹתֶיהָ לְבָעֵר בָּעֶרֶב בָּעֶרֶב--כִּי-שֹׁמְרִים אֲנַחְנוּ, אֶת-מִשְׁמֶרֶת יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ; וְאַתֶּם, עֲזַבְתֶּם אֹתוֹ.
u'maktirim laYHWH olot ba'boker-ba'boker u'va'erev-ba'erev u'ketoret-samim u'ma'ereket lekhem al-ha'shulchan ha-tahor, u'menorat ha-zhav ve'neroteha le'va'er ba'erev ba'erev--ki-shomrim anachnu, et-mishmeret YHWH Eloheinu; ve'atem, azavtem oto.
and they burn unto the LORD every morning and every evening burnt-offerings and sweet incense; the showbread also set they in order upon the pure table; and the candlestick of gold with the lamps thereof, to burn every evening; for we keep the charge of the LORD our God; but ye have forsaken Him.
12.
וְהִנֵּה עִמָּנוּ בָרֹאשׁ הָאֱלֹהִים וְכֹהֲנָיו, וַחֲצֹצְרוֹת הַתְּרוּעָה--לְהָרִיעַ עֲלֵיכֶם; בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, אַל-תִּלָּחֲמוּ עִם-יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי-אֲבֹתֵיכֶם--כִּי-לֹא תַצְלִיחוּ.
ve'hineh imanu ba'rosh ha'Elohim ve'kohanav, va'hatzotzrot ha'teruah--le'hari'a aleikhem; benei Yisrael, al-tilachamu im-YHWH Elohei-avoteichem--ki-lo tatzlichu.
And, behold, God is with us at our head, and His priests with the trumpets of alarm to sound an alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight ye not against the LORD, the God of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper.'
13.
וְיָרָבְעָם, הֵסֵב אֶת-הַמַּאְרָב, לָבוֹא, מֵאַחֲרֵיהֶם; וַיִּהְיוּ לִפְנֵי יְהוּדָה, וְהַמַּאְרָב מֵאַחֲרֵיהֶם.
ve'Yarovam, hesev et-ha'ma'arav, lavo, me'achareihem; va'yihyu lifnei Yehuda, ve'ha'ma'arav me'achareihem.
But Jeroboam caused an ambushment to come about behind them; so they were before Judah, and the ambushment was behind them.
14.
וַיִּפְנוּ יְהוּדָה, וְהִנֵּה לָהֶם הַמִּלְחָמָה פָּנִים וְאָחוֹר, וַיִּצְעֲקוּ, לַיהוָה; וְהַכֹּהֲנִים, מחצצרים מַחְצְרִים בַּחֲצֹצְרוֹת.
vayifnu Yehudah, vehineh lahem hamilchamah panim ve'achor, vayitz'aku, laAdonai; vehakohanim, machatzrim machtzrim bachatztrot.
And when Judah looked back, behold, the battle was before and behind them; and they cried unto the LORD, and the priests sounded with the trumpets.
15.
וַיָּרִיעוּ, אִישׁ יְהוּדָה; וַיְהִי, בְּהָרִיעַ אִישׁ יְהוּדָה, וְהָאֱלֹהִים נָגַף אֶת-יָרָבְעָם וְכָל-יִשְׂרָאֵל, לִפְנֵי אֲבִיָּה וִיהוּדָה.
vayari'u, ish Yehudah; vayehi, behari'a ish Yehudah, vehaElohim nagaf et-Yarov'am vechol-Yisrael, lifnei Aviyah viYehudah.
Then the men of Judah gave a shout; and as the men of Judah shouted, it came to pass, that God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.
16.
וַיָּנוּסוּ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל, מִפְּנֵי יְהוּדָה; וַיִּתְּנֵם אֱלֹהִים, בְּיָדָם.
vayanusu vene-Yisrael, mipnei Yehudah; vayitnenum Elohim, beyadam.
And the children of Israel fled before Judah; and God delivered them into their hand.
17.
וַיַּכּוּ בָהֶם אֲבִיָּה וְעַמּוֹ, מַכָּה רַבָּה; וַיִּפְּלוּ חֲלָלִים מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל, חֲמֵשׁ-מֵאוֹת אֶלֶף אִישׁ בָּחוּר.
vayaku bahem Aviyah ve'ammo, makkah rabbah; vayip'lu chalalim miYisrael, chamesh-me'ot elef ish bachur.
And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter; so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.
18.
וַיִּכָּנְעוּ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל, בָּעֵת הַהִיא; וַיֶּאֶמְצוּ, בְּנֵי יְהוּדָה, כִּי נִשְׁעֲנוּ, עַל-יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵיהֶם.
vayikan'u venei-Yisrael, ba'et hahi; vaye'emtsu, benei Yehudah, ki nish'enu, al-YHWH Elohei avoteihem.
Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied upon the LORD, the God of their fathers.
19.
וַיִּרְדֹּף אֲבִיָּה, אַחֲרֵי יָרָבְעָם, וַיִּלְכֹּד מִמֶּנּוּ עָרִים, אֶת-בֵּית-אֵל וְאֶת-בְּנוֹתֶיהָ וְאֶת-יְשָׁנָה וְאֶת-בְּנוֹתֶיהָ; וְאֶת-עפרון עֶפְרַיִן, וּבְנֹתֶיהָ.
vayirdof Aviyah, acharai Yarov'am, vayilkod mimenu arim, et-beit-El ve'et benoteiha ve'et Yeshanah ve'et benoteiha; ve'et-Efrayin, uvenoteiha.
And Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and took cities from him, Bethel with the towns thereof, and Jeshanah with the towns thereof, and Ephrain with the towns thereof.
20.
וְלֹא-עָצַר כֹּחַ-יָרָבְעָם עוֹד, בִּימֵי אֲבִיָּהוּ; וַיִּגְּפֵהוּ יְהוָה, וַיָּמֹת.
velo-atsar koach-Yarov'am od, bimei Aviyahu; vayigefehu YHWH, vayamot.
Neither did Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of Abijah; and the LORD smote him, and he died.
21.
וַיִּתְחַזֵּק אֲבִיָּהוּ--וַיִּשָּׂא-לוֹ, נָשִׁים אַרְבַּע עֶשְׂרֵה; וַיּוֹלֶד, עֶשְׂרִים וּשְׁנַיִם בָּנִים, וְשֵׁשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה, בָּנוֹת.
vayitchazeK Aviyahu--vayisa-lo, nashim arba esreh; vayyoled, eserim ushenayim banim, veshesh esreh, banot.
But Abijah waxed mighty, and took unto himself fourteen wives, and begot twenty and two sons, and sixteen daughters.
22.
וְיֶתֶר דִּבְרֵי אֲבִיָּה, וּדְרָכָיו וּדְבָרָיו--כְּתוּבִים, בְּמִדְרַשׁ הַנָּבִיא עִדּוֹ.
veyeter divrei Aviyah, uderakhav udevarav--ketuvim, bemidrash hanevi 'Ido.
And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways, and his sayings, are written in the commentary of the prophet Iddo.
23.
וַיִּשְׁכַּב אֲבִיָּה עִם-אֲבֹתָיו, וַיִּקְבְּרוּ אֹתוֹ בְּעִיר דָּוִיד, וַיִּמְלֹךְ אָסָא בְנוֹ, תַּחְתָּיו; בְּיָמָיו שָׁקְטָה הָאָרֶץ, עֶשֶׂר שָׁנִים.
vayishkav Aviyah 'im-avotav, vayikberu oto be'ir David, vayimlok Asa veno, takhtav; beyamiv shaketah ha'aretz, 'eser shanim.
So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David, and Asa his son reigned in his stead; in his days the land was quiet ten years.
