וַיֵּלֶךְ רְחַבְעָם, שְׁכֶמָה: כִּי שְׁכֶם בָּאוּ כָל-יִשְׂרָאֵל, לְהַמְלִיךְ אֹתוֹ.
vayelekh rehav'am, shekemah: ki shekem ba'u khol-yisrael, lehamlik oto.
And Rehoboam went to Shechem; for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.
2.
וַיְהִי כִּשְׁמֹעַ יָרָבְעָם בֶּן-נְבָט, וְהוּא בְמִצְרַיִם, אֲשֶׁר בָּרַח, מִפְּנֵי שְׁלֹמֹה הַמֶּלֶךְ--וַיָּשָׁב יָרָבְעָם, מִמִּצְרָיִם.
vayhi kishmo'a yarav'am ben-nevat, vehu vemitzrayim, asher barach, mipenei shlomoh hamelekh--vayashav yarav'am, mimitzrayim.
And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it--for he was in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of king Solomon--that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.

וַיִּשְׁלְחוּ, וַיִּקְרְאוּ-לוֹ, וַיָּבֹא יָרָבְעָם, וְכָל-יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיְדַבְּרוּ, אֶל-רְחַבְעָם לֵאמֹר.
vayishluhu, vayikru-lo, vayavo yarav'am, vekhol-yisrael; vaydabru, el-rehav'am lemor.
And they sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all Israel came, and they spoke to Rehoboam, saying:
4.
אָבִיךָ, הִקְשָׁה אֶת-עֻלֵּנוּ; וְעַתָּה הָקֵל מֵעֲבוֹדַת אָבִיךָ הַקָּשָׁה, וּמֵעֻלּוֹ הַכָּבֵד אֲשֶׁר-נָתַן עָלֵינוּ--וְנַעַבְדֶךָּ.
Avikha, hikshah et-ullenu; ve'attah hakel me'avodat avikha hakkashah, ume'ullo hakkaved asher-natan aleynu--vena'avadekha.
'Thy father made our yoke grievous; now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.'
5.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם, עוֹד שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים--וְשׁוּבוּ אֵלָי; וַיֵּלֶךְ, הָעָם.
Vayomer alehem, od sheloshet yamim--veshuvu elay; vayelekh, ha'am.
And he said unto them: 'Come again unto me after three days.' And the people departed.
6.
וַיִּוָּעַץ הַמֶּלֶךְ רְחַבְעָם, אֶת-הַזְּקֵנִים אֲשֶׁר-הָיוּ עֹמְדִים לִפְנֵי שְׁלֹמֹה אָבִיו, בִּהְיֹתוֹ חַי, לֵאמֹר: אֵיךְ אַתֶּם נוֹעָצִים, לְהָשִׁיב לָעָם-הַזֶּה דָּבָר.
Vayivva'ats hamelekh Rechavam, et-hazzekenim asher-hayu omedim lifnei Shlomo aviv, bihyoto chai, lemor: eikh attem no'atsim, lehashiv la'am-hazzeh davar.
And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying: 'What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?'
7.
וַיְדַבְּרוּ אֵלָיו לֵאמֹר, אִם-תִּהְיֶה לְטוֹב לְהָעָם הַזֶּה וּרְצִיתָם, וְדִבַּרְתָּ אֲלֵהֶם, דְּבָרִים טוֹבִים--וְהָיוּ לְךָ עֲבָדִים, כָּל-הַיָּמִים.
Vaydabru elayov lemor, im-tihyeh letov le'am hazzeh uretsitam, vedibarta alehem, devarim tovim--vehayu lekha avadim, kol-hayamim.
And they spoke unto him, saying: 'If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.'
8.
וַיַּעֲזֹב אֶת-עֲצַת הַזְּקֵנִים, אֲשֶׁר יְעָצֻהוּ; וַיִּוָּעַץ, אֶת-הַיְלָדִים אֲשֶׁר גָּדְלוּ אִתּוֹ, הָעֹמְדִים, לְפָנָיו.
vayya'azov et-atzat hazkene'im, asher ye'atzuhu; vayyiva'atz, et-hayeladim asher gadlu itto, ha'omedim, lefanav.
But he forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men that were grown up with him, that stood before him.
9.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם, מָה אַתֶּם נוֹעָצִים, וְנָשִׁיב דָּבָר, אֶת-הָעָם הַזֶּה: אֲשֶׁר דִּבְּרוּ אֵלַי, לֵאמֹר, הָקֵל מִן-הָעֹל, אֲשֶׁר-נָתַן אָבִיךָ עָלֵינוּ.
vayyomer alehem, mah attem no'atzim, venashiv davar, et-ha'am hazzeh: asher dibberu elay, lemor, hakel min-ha'ol, asher-natan avikha aleynu.
And he said unto them: 'What counsel give ye, that we may return answer to this people, who have spoken to me, saying: Make the yoke that thy father did put upon us lighter?'
10.
וַיְדַבְּרוּ אִתּוֹ, הַיְלָדִים אֲשֶׁר גָּדְלוּ אִתּוֹ לֵאמֹר, כֹּה-תֹאמַר לָעָם אֲשֶׁר-דִּבְּרוּ אֵלֶיךָ לֵאמֹר אָבִיךָ הִכְבִּיד אֶת-עֻלֵּנוּ, וְאַתָּה הָקֵל מֵעָלֵינוּ: כֹּה תֹּאמַר אֲלֵהֶם, קָטָנִּי עָבָה מִמָּתְנֵי אָבִי.
vaydabberu itto, hayeladim asher gadlu itto lemor, koh-tomar la'am asher-dibberu eleykha lemor avikha hikbid et-ulle_nu, ve'attah hakel me'aleynu: koh tomar alehem, katanni avah mimmate_ni avi.
And the young men that were grown up with him spoke unto him, saying: 'Thus shalt thou say unto the people that spoke unto thee, saying: Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them: My little finger is thicker than my father's loins.
11.
וְעַתָּה, אָבִי הֶעְמִיס עֲלֵיכֶם עֹל כָּבֵד, וַאֲנִי, אֹסִיף עַל-עֻלְּכֶם: אָבִי, יִסַּר אֶתְכֶם בַּשּׁוֹטִים, וַאֲנִי, בָּעַקְרַבִּים.
ve'attah, avi he'mis aleykhem ol kaved, va'ani, osif al-ullekhem: avi, yissar etkhem bashshotim, va'ani, ba'akrabbim.
And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.'
12.
וַיָּבֹא יָרָבְעָם וְכָל-הָעָם אֶל-רְחַבְעָם, בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִשִׁי, כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר הַמֶּלֶךְ לֵאמֹר, שׁוּבוּ אֵלַי בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִשִׁי.
vayavo yarovam vekhol-ha'am el-rekhavam, bayom hashlishi, ka'asher diber hamelekh lemor, shuvu elay bayom hashlishi.
So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king bade, saying: 'Come to me again the third day.'
13.
וַיַּעֲנֵם הַמֶּלֶךְ, קָשָׁה; וַיַּעֲזֹב הַמֶּלֶךְ רְחַבְעָם, אֵת עֲצַת הַזְּקֵנִים.
vaya'anem hamelekh, qashah; vaya'azov hamelekh rekhavam, et atzat hazqenim.
And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men,
14.
וַיְדַבֵּר אֲלֵהֶם, כַּעֲצַת הַיְלָדִים לֵאמֹר, אַכְבִּיד אֶת-עֻלְּכֶם, וַאֲנִי אֹסִיף עָלָיו: אָבִי, יִסַּר אֶתְכֶם בַּשּׁוֹטִים, וַאֲנִי, בָּעַקְרַבִּים.
veydaber alehem, ka'atzat hayeladim lemor, akhbid et-ulkhem, va'ani osif alay. avi, yisar etkhem bashotim, va'ani, ba'aqrabim.
and spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying: '[My father] made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.'
15.
וְלֹא-שָׁמַע הַמֶּלֶךְ, אֶל-הָעָם: כִּי-הָיְתָה נְסִבָּה, מֵעִם הָאֱלֹהִים--לְמַעַן הָקִים יְהוָה אֶת-דְּבָרוֹ אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר בְּיַד אֲחִיָּהוּ הַשִּׁלוֹנִי, אֶל-יָרָבְעָם בֶּן-נְבָט.
velo-shama hamelekh, el-ha'am: ki-hayetah nesibah, me'im haElohim--lema'an haqim YHWH et-devaro asher diber beyad akhiyahu hashiloni, el-yarovam ben-nevat.
So the king hearkened not unto the people; for it was brought about of God, that the LORD might establish His word, which He spoke by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16.
וְכָל-יִשְׂרָאֵל, כִּי לֹא-שָׁמַע הַמֶּלֶךְ לָהֶם, וַיָּשִׁיבוּ הָעָם אֶת-הַמֶּלֶךְ לֵאמֹר מַה-לָּנוּ חֵלֶק בְּדָוִיד וְלֹא-נַחֲלָה בְּבֶן-יִשַׁי אִישׁ לְאֹהָלֶיךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל, עַתָּה רְאֵה בֵיתְךָ דָּוִיד; וַיֵּלֶךְ כָּל-יִשְׂרָאֵל, לְאֹהָלָיו.
ve'chol-Yisrael ki lo-shama hamelekh lahem vayashivu ha'am et-hamelekh lemor mah-lanu khelek bedavid velo-nakhalah beben-Yishai ish le'ohalekha Yisrael attah re'eh veythekha David vayelekh kol-Yisrael le'ohalav.
And when all Israel [saw] that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying: 'What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse; every man to your tents, O Israel; now see to thine own house, David.' So all Israel departed unto their tents.
17.
וּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, הַיֹּשְׁבִים בְּעָרֵי יְהוּדָה--וַיִּמְלֹךְ עֲלֵיהֶם, רְחַבְעָם.
uvney Yisrael hayoshvim be'arei Yehudah vayimlokh aleihem Rekhav'am.
But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18.
וַיִּשְׁלַח הַמֶּלֶךְ רְחַבְעָם, אֶת-הֲדֹרָם אֲשֶׁר עַל-הַמַּס, וַיִּרְגְּמוּ-בוֹ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶבֶן, וַיָּמֹת; וְהַמֶּלֶךְ רְחַבְעָם, הִתְאַמֵּץ לַעֲלוֹת בַּמֶּרְכָּבָה, לָנוּס, יְרוּשָׁלִָם.
vayshalakh hamelekh Rekhav'am et-Hadoram asher al-hamas vayirgmu-vo veney-Yisrael even vayamot vehamelekh Rekhav'am hit'ametz la'alot bamerkavah lanus Yerushalayim.
Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the levy; and the children of Israel stoned him with stones, so that he died. And king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19.
וַיִּפְשְׁעוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּבֵית דָּוִיד, עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה.
vayish'u Yisrael beveit David ad hayom hazeh.
So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
