1.
וַיַּגִּדוּ לְדָוִד, לֵאמֹר: הִנֵּה פְלִשְׁתִּים נִלְחָמִים בִּקְעִילָה, וְהֵמָּה שֹׁסִים אֶת-הַגֳּרָנוֹת.
vayagidu leDavid, lemor: hineh Felishtim nilhamim bik'ilah, vehemah shosim et-hageranot.
And they told David, saying: 'Behold, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah, and they rob the threshing-floors.'
2.
וַיִּשְׁאַל דָּוִד בַּיהוָה, לֵאמֹר, הַאֵלֵךְ וְהִכֵּיתִי, בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּים הָאֵלֶּה; וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל-דָּוִד, לֵךְ וְהִכִּיתָ בַפְּלִשְׁתִּים, וְהוֹשַׁעְתָּ, אֶת-קְעִילָה.
vayish'al David ba'Adonai lemor, ha'elekh vehiketi, bapelishtim ha'eleh; vayomer YHWH el-David, lekh vehikita vafelishtim, vehosha'ta, et-qe'ilah.
Therefore David inquired of the LORD, saying: 'Shall I go and smite these Philistines?' And the LORD said unto David: 'Go, and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah.'
3.
וַיֹּאמְרוּ אַנְשֵׁי דָוִד, אֵלָיו, הִנֵּה אֲנַחְנוּ פֹה בִּיהוּדָה, יְרֵאִים; וְאַף כִּי-נֵלֵךְ קְעִלָה, אֶל-מַעַרְכוֹת פְּלִשְׁתִּים.
vayomru anshei David, elav, hineh anachnu foh bihudah, yere'im; ve'af ki-nelekh qe'ilah, el-ma'archot pelishtim.
And David's men said unto him: 'Behold, we are afraid here in Judah; how much more then if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?'

וַיּוֹסֶף עוֹד דָּוִד לִשְׁאוֹל בַּיהוָה, וַיַּעֲנֵהוּ יְהוָה; וַיֹּאמֶר, קוּם רֵד קְעִילָה--כִּי-אֲנִי נֹתֵן אֶת-פְּלִשְׁתִּים, בְּיָדֶךָ.
vayosef od David lish'ol ba'Adonai, vaya'anehu YHWH; vayomer, qum red qe'ilah--ki-ani noten et-pelishtim, beyadekha.
Then David inquired of the LORD yet again. And the LORD answered him and said: 'Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into thy hand.'
5.
וַיֵּלֶךְ דָּוִד וַאֲנָשָׁו קְעִילָה וַיִּלָּחֶם בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּים, וַיִּנְהַג אֶת-מִקְנֵיהֶם, וַיַּךְ בָּהֶם, מַכָּה גְדוֹלָה; וַיֹּשַׁע דָּוִד, אֵת יֹשְׁבֵי קְעִילָה.
vayelekh David va'anashav qe'ilah vayilachem bapelishtim, vayinhag et-miqneihem, vayakh bahem, makah gedolah; vayosha David, et yoshvei qe'ilah.
And David and his men went to Keilah, and fought with the Philistines, and brought away their cattle, and slew them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.
6.
וַיְהִי, בִּבְרֹחַ אֶבְיָתָר בֶּן-אֲחִימֶלֶךְ אֶל-דָּוִד--קְעִילָה; אֵפוֹד, יָרַד בְּיָדוֹ.
vayhi, bivroakh Evyatar ben-Akhimelekh el-David--Qe'ilah; efod, yarad beyado.
And it came to pass, when Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, that he came down with an ephod in his hand.
7.
וַיֻּגַּד לְשָׁאוּל, כִּי-בָא דָוִד קְעִילָה; וַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל, נִכַּר אֹתוֹ אֱלֹהִים בְּיָדִי--כִּי נִסְגַּר לָבוֹא, בְּעִיר דְּלָתַיִם וּבְרִיחַ.
vayuggad leSha'ul, ki-va David Qe'ilah; vayomer Sha'ul, nikar oto Elohim beyadi--ki nisgar lavovo, be'ir delatayim uveriakh.
And it was told Saul that David was come to Keilah. And Saul said: 'God hath delivered him into my hand; for he is shut in, by entering into a town that hath gates and bars.'
8.
וַיְשַׁמַּע שָׁאוּל אֶת-כָּל-הָעָם, לַמִּלְחָמָה, לָרֶדֶת קְעִילָה, לָצוּר אֶל-דָּוִד וְאֶל-אֲנָשָׁיו.
vayshamayַ Sha'ul et-kol-ha'am, lamilkhamah, laredet Qe'ilah, latsur el-David ve'el-anashav.
And Saul summoned all the people to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men.
9.
וַיֵּדַע דָּוִד--כִּי עָלָיו, שָׁאוּל מַחֲרִישׁ הָרָעָה; וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל-אֶבְיָתָר הַכֹּהֵן, הַגִּישָׁה הָאֵפוֹד.
vayedah David--ki alav, Sha'ul makharish hara'ah; vayomer el-Evyatar hakohen, hagishah ha'efod.
And David knew that Saul devised mischief against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest: 'Bring hither the ephod.'
10.
וַיֹּאמֶר, דָּוִד, יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, שָׁמֹעַ שָׁמַע עַבְדְּךָ כִּי-מְבַקֵּשׁ שָׁאוּל לָבוֹא אֶל-קְעִילָה--לְשַׁחֵת לָעִיר, בַּעֲבוּרִי.
vayomer David YHWH Elohei Yisrael shamoa shama avdekha ki-mevakesh Shaul lavo el-ke'ilah leshakhet la'ir ba'avuri.
Then said David: 'O LORD, the God of Israel, Thy servant hath surely heard that Saul seeketh to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake.
11.
הֲיַסְגִּרֻנִי בַעֲלֵי קְעִילָה בְיָדוֹ הֲיֵרֵד שָׁאוּל, כַּאֲשֶׁר שָׁמַע עַבְדֶּךָ--יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, הַגֶּד-נָא לְעַבְדֶּךָ; וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה, יֵרֵד.
hayasgiruni va'alei ke'ilah veyado hyered Shaul ka'asher shama avdekha YHWH Elohei Yisrael haged-na le'avdekha vayomer YHWH yered.
Will the men of Keilah deliver me up into his hand? will Saul come down, as Thy servant hath heard?' O LORD, the God of Israel, I beseech Thee, tell Thy servant.' And the LORD said: 'He will come down.'
12.
וַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִד--הֲיַסְגִּרוּ בַּעֲלֵי קְעִילָה אֹתִי וְאֶת-אֲנָשַׁי, בְּיַד-שָׁאוּל; וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה, יַסְגִּירוּ.
vayomer David hayasgiru ba'alei ke'ilah oti ve'et-anashay beyad-Shaul vayomer YHWH yasgiru.
Then said David: 'Will the men of Keilah deliver up me and my men into the hand of Saul?' And the LORD said: 'They will deliver thee up.'
13.
וַיָּקָם דָּוִד וַאֲנָשָׁיו כְּשֵׁשׁ-מֵאוֹת אִישׁ, וַיֵּצְאוּ מִקְּעִלָה, וַיִּתְהַלְּכוּ, בַּאֲשֶׁר יִתְהַלָּכוּ; וּלְשָׁאוּל הֻגַּד, כִּי-נִמְלַט דָּוִד מִקְּעִילָה, וַיֶּחְדַּל, לָצֵאת.
vayakam David va'anashay keshesh-me'ot ish vayetzu mik'e'ilah vayithalhaku ba'asher yithallaku uleshaul hugad ki-nimlat David mik'e'ilah veyekhdal latzet.
Then David and his men, who were about six hundred, arose and departed out of Keilah, and went whithersoever they could go. And it was told Saul that David was escaped from Keilah; and he forbore to go forth.
14.
וַיֵּשֶׁב דָּוִד בַּמִּדְבָּר בַּמְּצָדוֹת, וַיֵּשֶׁב בָּהָר בְּמִדְבַּר-זִיף; וַיְבַקְשֵׁהוּ שָׁאוּל כָּל-הַיָּמִים, וְלֹא-נְתָנוֹ אֱלֹהִים בְּיָדוֹ.
Vayeshev David bamidbar bametzedot, vayeshev bahar bemidbar-zif; vayvakshehu Sha'ul kol-hayamim, velo-netanohu Elohim beyado.
And David abode in the wilderness in the strongholds, and remained in the hill-country in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand.
15.
וַיַּרְא דָּוִד, כִּי-יָצָא שָׁאוּל לְבַקֵּשׁ אֶת-נַפְשׁוֹ; וְדָוִד בְּמִדְבַּר-זִיף, בַּחֹרְשָׁה.
Vayar David, ki-yatsa Sha'ul levakesh et-nafsho; veDavid bemidbar-zif, bakhorshah.
And David saw that Saul was come out to seek his life; and David was in the wilderness of Ziph in the wood.
16.
וַיָּקָם יְהוֹנָתָן בֶּן-שָׁאוּל, וַיֵּלֶךְ אֶל-דָּוִד חֹרְשָׁה; וַיְחַזֵּק אֶת-יָדוֹ, בֵּאלֹהִים.
Vayakam Yehonatan ben-Sha'ul, vayelekh el-David khorshah; vaykhazek et-yado, beElohim.
And Jonathan Saul's son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God.
17.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אַל-תִּירָא, כִּי לֹא תִמְצָאֲךָ יַד שָׁאוּל אָבִי, וְאַתָּה תִּמְלֹךְ עַל-יִשְׂרָאֵל, וְאָנֹכִי אֶהְיֶה-לְּךָ לְמִשְׁנֶה; וְגַם-שָׁאוּל אָבִי, יֹדֵעַ כֵּן.
Vayomer elayiv al-tira, ki lo timtza'akha yad Sha'ul avi, ve'atah timlok al-Yisrael, ve'anokhi ehyeh-lekha lemishneh; vegam-Sha'ul avi, yode'a ken.
And he said unto him: 'Fear not; for the hand of Saul my father shall not find thee; and thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee; and that also Saul my father knoweth.'
18.
וַיִּכְרְתוּ שְׁנֵיהֶם בְּרִית, לִפְנֵי יְהוָה; וַיֵּשֶׁב דָּוִד בַּחֹרְשָׁה, וִיהוֹנָתָן הָלַךְ לְבֵיתוֹ.
vayikhretu sheneihem berit, lifnei YHWH; vayeishev David bakhorshah, vihonatan halakh leveito.
And they two made a covenant before the LORD; and David abode in the wood, and Jonathan went to his house.
19.
וַיַּעֲלוּ זִפִים אֶל-שָׁאוּל, הַגִּבְעָתָה לֵאמֹר: הֲלוֹא דָוִד מִסְתַּתֵּר עִמָּנוּ בַמְּצָדוֹת, בַּחֹרְשָׁה--בְּגִבְעַת הַחֲכִילָה, אֲשֶׁר מִימִין הַיְשִׁימוֹן.
vaya'alu zifim el-sha'ul, hagiv'atah lemor: halo David mistater imanu bamtzadot, bakhorshah--begiv'at hakhikhatah, asher mimein hayshimon.
Then came up the Ziphites to Saul to Gibeah, saying: 'Doth not David hide himself with us in the strongholds in the wood, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of Jeshimon?
20.
וְעַתָּה לְכָל-אַוַּת נַפְשְׁךָ הַמֶּלֶךְ, לָרֶדֶת--רֵד; וְלָנוּ הַסְגִּירוֹ, בְּיַד הַמֶּלֶךְ.
ve'atah lekhol-avvat nafshekha hamelekh, laredet--red; velanu hasgiro, beyad hamelekh.
Now therefore, O king, come down, according to all the desire of thy soul to come down; and our part shall be to deliver him up into the king's hand.'
21.
וַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל, בְּרוּכִים אַתֶּם לַיהוָה: כִּי חֲמַלְתֶּם, עָלָי.
vayomer sha'ul, berukhim attem laYHWH: ki khamaltem, alay.
And Saul said: 'Blessed be ye of the LORD; for ye have had compassion on me.
22.
לְכוּ-נָא הָכִינוּ עוֹד, וּדְעוּ וּרְאוּ אֶת-מְקוֹמוֹ אֲשֶׁר תִּהְיֶה רַגְלוֹ--מִי רָאָהוּ, שָׁם: כִּי אָמַר אֵלַי, עָרוֹם יַעְרִם הוּא.
lekhu-na hakhinu od, ude'u ur'u et-mekomo asher tihyeh raglo--mi ra'ahu, sham: ki amar elay, arum ya'arim hu.
Go, I pray you, make yet more sure, and know and see his place where his haunt is, and who hath seen him there; for it is told me that he dealeth very subtly.
23.
וּרְאוּ וּדְעוּ, מִכֹּל הַמַּחֲבֹאִים אֲשֶׁר יִתְחַבֵּא שָׁם, וְשַׁבְתֶּם אֵלַי אֶל-נָכוֹן, וְהָלַכְתִּי אִתְּכֶם; וְהָיָה, אִם-יֶשְׁנוֹ בָאָרֶץ--וְחִפַּשְׂתִּי אֹתוֹ, בְּכֹל אַלְפֵי יְהוּדָה.
ur'u ude'u, mikol hamakhavim asher yithabe sham, veshavtem elay el-nakon, vehalakhti itkhem; vehayah, im-yeshno ba'aretz--vehifashti oto, bekhol alfei yehudah.
See therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking-places where he hideth himself, and come ye back to me with the certainty, and I will go with you; and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out among all the thousands of Judah.'
24.
וַיָּקוּמוּ וַיֵּלְכוּ זִיפָה, לִפְנֵי שָׁאוּל; וְדָוִד וַאֲנָשָׁיו בְּמִדְבַּר מָעוֹן, בָּעֲרָבָה--אֶל, יְמִין הַיְשִׁימוֹן.
vayakumu vayelkhu zifah, lifnei sha'ul; vedavid va'anavshav bemidbar ma'on, ba'aravah--el, yemin hayeshimon.
And they arose, and went to Ziph before Saul; but David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the Arabah on the south of Jeshimon.
25.
וַיֵּלֶךְ שָׁאוּל וַאֲנָשָׁיו, לְבַקֵּשׁ, וַיַּגִּדוּ לְדָוִד, וַיֵּרֶד הַסֶּלַע וַיֵּשֶׁב בְּמִדְבַּר מָעוֹן; וַיִּשְׁמַע שָׁאוּל, וַיִּרְדֹּף אַחֲרֵי-דָוִד מִדְבַּר מָעוֹן.
vayelekh sha'ul va'anavshav, levakesh, vayagidu ledavid, vayered hasela vayeshev bemidbar ma'on; vayishma sha'ul, vayirdof akharei-david midbar ma'on.
And Saul and his men went to seek him. And they told David; wherefore he came down to the rock, and abode in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon.
26.
וַיֵּלֶךְ שָׁאוּל מִצַּד הָהָר, מִזֶּה, וְדָוִד וַאֲנָשָׁיו מִצַּד הָהָר, מִזֶּה; וַיְהִי דָוִד נֶחְפָּז לָלֶכֶת, מִפְּנֵי שָׁאוּל, וְשָׁאוּל וַאֲנָשָׁיו עֹטְרִים אֶל-דָּוִד וְאֶל-אֲנָשָׁיו, לְתָפְשָׂם.
vayelekh sha'ul mitzad hahar, mizeh, vedavid va'anashav mitzad hahar, mizeh; vayhi david nekhpaz lalekhet, mipnei sha'ul, vesha'ul va'anashav otрим el-david ve'el-anashav, letafsam.
And Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain; and David made haste to get away for fear of Saul; for Saul and his men compassed David and his men round about to take them.
27.
וּמַלְאָךְ בָּא, אֶל-שָׁאוּל לֵאמֹר: מַהֲרָה וְלֵכָה, כִּי-פָשְׁטוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים עַל-הָאָרֶץ.
umalakh ba, el-sha'ul lemor: maharah velekha, ki-fashtu felishtim al-ha'aretz.
But there came a messenger unto Saul, saying: 'Haste thee, and come; for the Philistines have made a raid upon the land.'
28.
וַיָּשָׁב שָׁאוּל, מִרְדֹף אַחֲרֵי דָוִד, וַיֵּלֶךְ, לִקְרַאת פְּלִשְׁתִּים; עַל-כֵּן, קָרְאוּ לַמָּקוֹם הַהוּא, סֶלַע, הַמַּחְלְקוֹת.
vayashav sha'ul, mirdof akharei david, vayelekh, likrat felishtim; al-ken, kar'u lamakom hahu, sela, hamakhlakot.
So Saul returned from pursuing after David, and went against the Philistines; therefore they called that place Sela-hammahlekoth.
29.
וַיַּעַל דָּוִד, מִשָּׁם; וַיֵּשֶׁב, בִּמְצָדוֹת עֵין-גֶּדִי.
vaya'al david, misham; vayeshev, bimtzadot ein-gedi.
And David went up from thence, and dwelt in the strongholds of En-gedi.
