1.
וַיְדַבֵּר שָׁאוּל, אֶל-יוֹנָתָן בְּנוֹ וְאֶל-כָּל-עֲבָדָיו, לְהָמִית, אֶת-דָּוִד; וִיהוֹנָתָן, בֶּן-שָׁאוּל, חָפֵץ בְּדָוִד, מְאֹד.
vaydaber sha'ul, el-yonatan beno ve'el-kol-avadav, lehamit, et-david; vihonatan, ben-sha'ul, khafetz bedavid, me'od.
And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son, and to all his servants, that they should slay David; but Jonathan Saul's son delighted much in David.
2.
וַיַּגֵּד יְהוֹנָתָן לְדָוִד לֵאמֹר, מְבַקֵּשׁ שָׁאוּל אָבִי לַהֲמִיתֶךָ; וְעַתָּה הִשָּׁמֶר-נָא בַבֹּקֶר, וְיָשַׁבְתָּ בַסֵּתֶר וְנַחְבֵּאתָ.
vayaged yehonatan ledavid lemor, mevakeshep sha'ul avi lahamitekha; ve'atah hishamer-na vavoker, veyashavta baseter venakhbe'ta.
And Jonathan told David, saying: 'Saul my father seeketh to slay thee; now therefore, I pray thee, take heed to thyself in the morning, and abide in a secret place, and hide thyself.
3.
וַאֲנִי אֵצֵא וְעָמַדְתִּי לְיַד-אָבִי, בַּשָּׂדֶה אֲשֶׁר אַתָּה שָׁם, וַאֲנִי, אֲדַבֵּר בְּךָ אֶל-אָבִי; וְרָאִיתִי מָה, וְהִגַּדְתִּי לָךְ.
va'ani etzei ve'amadti leyad-avi, basadeh asher atah sham, va'ani, adaber bekha el-avi; vera'iti mah, vehigadti lakh.
And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where thou art, and I will speak with my father of thee; and if I see aught, I will tell thee.'

וַיְדַבֵּר יְהוֹנָתָן בְּדָוִד טוֹב, אֶל-שָׁאוּל אָבִיו; וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אַל-יֶחֱטָא הַמֶּלֶךְ בְּעַבְדּוֹ בְדָוִד, כִּי לוֹא חָטָא לָךְ, וְכִי מַעֲשָׂיו, טוֹב-לְךָ מְאֹד.
vaydaber Yehonatan bedavid tov, el-Sha'ul aviv; vayomer elav al-yekheta hamelekh be'avdo vedavid, ki lo khata lakh, vekhi ma'asav, tov-lekha me'od.
And Jonathan spoke good of David unto Saul his father, and said unto him: 'Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he hath not sinned against thee, and because his work hath been very good towards thee;

וַיָּשֶׂם אֶת-נַפְשׁוֹ בְכַפּוֹ וַיַּךְ אֶת-הַפְּלִשְׁתִּי, וַיַּעַשׂ יְהוָה תְּשׁוּעָה גְדוֹלָה לְכָל-יִשְׂרָאֵל--רָאִיתָ, וַתִּשְׂמָח; וְלָמָּה תֶחֱטָא בְּדָם נָקִי, לְהָמִית אֶת-דָּוִד חִנָּם.
vayasem et-nafsho vekhapo vayakh et-hapelishti, vayas' YHWH tshu'ah gedolah lekhal-Yisrael--ra'ita, vattismakh; velamma tekheta bedam naki, lehamit et-david khinnam.
for he put his life in his hand, and smote the Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great victory for all Israel; thou sawest it, and didst rejoice; wherefore then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?'
6.
וַיִּשְׁמַע שָׁאוּל, בְּקוֹל יְהוֹנָתָן; וַיִּשָּׁבַע שָׁאוּל, חַי-יְהוָה אִם-יוּמָת.
vayshma Sha'ul, bekol Yehonatan; vayshava Sha'ul, khay-YHWH im-yumat.
And Saul hearkened unto the voice of Jonathan; and Saul swore: 'As the LORD liveth, he shall not be put to death.'
7.
וַיִּקְרָא יְהוֹנָתָן, לְדָוִד, וַיַּגֶּד-לוֹ יְהוֹנָתָן, אֵת כָּל-הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה; וַיָּבֵא יְהוֹנָתָן אֶת-דָּוִד אֶל-שָׁאוּל, וַיְהִי לְפָנָיו כְּאֶתְמוֹל שִׁלְשׁוֹם.
vayikra yehonatan le-david vayaged-lo yehonatan et kol-hadevarim ha'eleh vayave yehonatan et-david el-sha'ul vayhi lefanav ke'etmol shilshom.
And Jonathan called David, and Jonathan told him all those things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence, as beforetime.
8.
וַתּוֹסֶף הַמִּלְחָמָה, לִהְיוֹת; וַיֵּצֵא דָוִד וַיִּלָּחֶם בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּים, וַיַּךְ בָּהֶם מַכָּה גְדוֹלָה, וַיָּנֻסוּ, מִפָּנָיו.
vatosof hamilkhah lihyot vayetze david vayilakhem baplishtim vayakh bahem maka gedola vyanusu mipanav.
And there was war again; and David went out, and fought with the Philistines, and slew them with a great slaughter; and they fled before him.
9.
וַתְּהִי רוּחַ יְהוָה רָעָה, אֶל-שָׁאוּל, וְהוּא בְּבֵיתוֹ יֹשֵׁב, וַחֲנִיתוֹ בְּיָדוֹ; וְדָוִד, מְנַגֵּן בְּיָד.
vtehi ru'ach YHWH ra'a el-sha'ul vehu beveto yoshev vakhanto beyado vedavid menagen beyad.
And an evil spirit from the LORD was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand; and David was playing with his hand.
10.
וַיְבַקֵּשׁ שָׁאוּל לְהַכּוֹת בַּחֲנִית, בְּדָוִד וּבַקִּיר, וַיִּפְטַר מִפְּנֵי שָׁאוּל, וַיַּךְ אֶת-הַחֲנִית בַּקִּיר; וְדָוִד נָס וַיִּמָּלֵט, בַּלַּיְלָה הוּא.
vayvakesh sha'ul lehakot bakhanit bedavid uvakir vayiftar mipenei sha'ul vayakh et-hakhanit bakir vedavid nas vayimalet balayla hu.
And Saul sought to smite David even to the wall with the spear; but he slipped away out of Saul's presence, and he smote the spear into the wall; and David fled, and escaped that night.
11.
וַיִּשְׁלַח שָׁאוּל מַלְאָכִים אֶל-בֵּית דָּוִד, לְשָׁמְרוֹ, וְלַהֲמִיתוֹ, בַּבֹּקֶר; וַתַּגֵּד לְדָוִד, מִיכַל אִשְׁתּוֹ לֵאמֹר, אִם-אֵינְךָ מְמַלֵּט אֶת-נַפְשְׁךָ הַלַּיְלָה, מָחָר אַתָּה מוּמָת.
vayishlach sha'ul mal'akhim el-bet david, leshamro, velahamito, baboker; vattaged ledavid, mikhal ishto lemor, im-enekha memallet et-nafshekha halaylah, makhar attah mumat.
And Saul sent messengers unto David's house, to watch him, and to slay him in the morning; and Michal David's wife told him, saying: 'If thou save not thy life to-night, to-morrow thou shalt be slain.'
12.
וַתֹּרֶד מִיכַל אֶת-דָּוִד, בְּעַד הַחַלּוֹן; וַיֵּלֶךְ וַיִּבְרַח, וַיִּמָּלֵט.
vattored mikhal et-david, be'ad hakhallon; vayelekh vayivrakh, vayimalet.
So Michal let David down through the window; and he went, and fled, and escaped.
13.
וַתִּקַּח מִיכַל אֶת-הַתְּרָפִים, וַתָּשֶׂם אֶל-הַמִּטָּה, וְאֵת כְּבִיר הָעִזִּים, שָׂמָה מְרַאֲשֹׁתָיו; וַתְּכַס, בַּבָּגֶד.
vattiqach mikhal et-haterafim, vattasem el-hamittah, ve'et kevir ha'izzim, samah mera'ashotav; vattekhas, babbaged.
And Michal took the teraphim, and laid it in the bed, and put a quilt of goats' hair at the head thereof, and covered it with a cloth.
14.
וַיִּשְׁלַח שָׁאוּל מַלְאָכִים, לָקַחַת אֶת-דָּוִד; וַתֹּאמֶר, חֹלֶה הוּא.
vayishlach sha'ul mal'akhim, laqachat et-david; vattomer, kholeh hu.
And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said: 'He is sick.'
15.
וַיִּשְׁלַח שָׁאוּל אֶת-הַמַּלְאָכִים, לִרְאוֹת אֶת-דָּוִד לֵאמֹר: הַעֲלוּ אֹתוֹ בַמִּטָּה אֵלַי, לַהֲמִתוֹ.
vayishlach sha'ul et-hamal'akhim lir'ot et-david lemor: ha'alu oto bamitah elay lahamito.
And Saul sent the messengers to see David, saying: 'Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may slay him.'
16.
וַיָּבֹאוּ, הַמַּלְאָכִים, וְהִנֵּה הַתְּרָפִים, אֶל-הַמִּטָּה; וּכְבִיר הָעִזִּים, מְרַאֲשֹׁתָיו.
vayavo'u hamal'akhim vehineh haterafim el-hamitah; ukhvir ha'izim mera'oshotav.
And when the messengers came in, behold, the teraphim was in the bed, with the quilt of goats' hair at the head thereof.
17.
וַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל אֶל-מִיכַל, לָמָּה כָּכָה רִמִּיתִנִי, וַתְּשַׁלְּחִי אֶת-אֹיְבִי, וַיִּמָּלֵט; וַתֹּאמֶר מִיכַל אֶל-שָׁאוּל, הוּא-אָמַר אֵלַי שַׁלְּחִנִי לָמָה אֲמִיתֵךְ.
vayomer sha'ul el-mikhal lamah kakhah rimitini vateshal'chi et-oyevi vayimalet; vate'omer mikhal el-sha'ul hu-amar elay sh'lchini lamah amitek.
And Saul said unto Michal: 'Why hast thou deceived me thus, and let mine enemy go, that he is escaped?' And Michal answered Saul: 'He said unto me: Let me go; why should I kill thee?'
18.
וְדָוִד בָּרַח וַיִּמָּלֵט, וַיָּבֹא אֶל-שְׁמוּאֵל הָרָמָתָה, וַיַּגֶּד-לוֹ, אֵת כָּל-אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה-לוֹ שָׁאוּל; וַיֵּלֶךְ הוּא וּשְׁמוּאֵל, וַיֵּשְׁבוּ בנוית בְּנָיוֹת.
vedavid barach vayimalet vayavo el-shmu'el haramatah vayaged-lo et kol-asher asah-lo sha'ul; vayelekh hu ushmu'el vayeyshevu benayot.
Now David fled, and escaped, and came to Samuel to Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth.
19.
וַיֻּגַּד לְשָׁאוּל, לֵאמֹר: הִנֵּה דָוִד, בנוית בְּנָיוֹת בָּרָמָה.
vayuggad lesha'ul lemor hineh david benayot baramah
And it was told Saul, saying: 'Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.'
20.
וַיִּשְׁלַח שָׁאוּל מַלְאָכִים, לָקַחַת אֶת-דָּוִד, וַיַּרְא אֶת-לַהֲקַת הַנְּבִיאִים נִבְּאִים, וּשְׁמוּאֵל עֹמֵד נִצָּב עֲלֵיהֶם; וַתְּהִי עַל-מַלְאֲכֵי שָׁאוּל, רוּחַ אֱלֹהִים, וַיִּתְנַבְּאוּ, גַּם-הֵמָּה.
vayishlach sha'ul mal'achim lakachat et david vayar et lahat hannevi'im nib'im ushmu'el omed nitzav alehem vatehi al mal'akei sha'ul ruach elohim vayyitnav'u gam hemah
And Saul sent messengers to take David; and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as head over them, the spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.
21.
וַיַּגִּדוּ לְשָׁאוּל, וַיִּשְׁלַח מַלְאָכִים אֲחֵרִים, וַיִּתְנַבְּאוּ, גַּם-הֵמָּה; וַיֹּסֶף שָׁאוּל, וַיִּשְׁלַח מַלְאָכִים שְׁלִשִׁים, וַיִּתְנַבְּאוּ, גַּם-הֵמָּה.
vayaggidu lesha'ul vayishlach mal'achim acherim vayyitnav'u gam hemah vayyosef sha'ul vayishlach mal'achim shelishim vayyitnav'u gam hemah
And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they also prophesied. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they also prophesied.
22.
וַיֵּלֶךְ גַּם-הוּא הָרָמָתָה, וַיָּבֹא עַד-בּוֹר הַגָּדוֹל אֲשֶׁר בַּשֶּׂכוּ, וַיִּשְׁאַל וַיֹּאמֶר, אֵיפֹה שְׁמוּאֵל וְדָוִד; וַיֹּאמֶר, הִנֵּה בנוית בְּנָיוֹת בָּרָמָה.
vayelech gam hu haramata vayavo ad bor hagadol asher bashechu vayishal vayomer efo shmu'el vedavid vayomer hineh benayot baramah
Then went he also to Ramah, and came to the great cistern that is in Secu; and he asked and said: 'Where are Samuel and David?' And one said: 'Behold, they are at Naioth in Ramah.'
23.
וַיֵּלֶךְ שָׁם, אֶל-נוית נָיוֹת בָּרָמָה; וַתְּהִי עָלָיו גַּם-הוּא רוּחַ אֱלֹהִים, וַיֵּלֶךְ הָלוֹךְ וַיִּתְנַבֵּא, עַד-בֹּאוֹ, בנוית בְּנָיוֹת בָּרָמָה.
vayelekh sham, el-novit nayot baramah; vatehi alav gam-hu ruach Elohim, vayelekh halokh vayitnabe, ad-bo'o, benovit benayot baramah.
And he went thither to Naioth in Ramah; and the spirit of God came upon him also, and he went on, and prophesied, until he came to Naioth in Ramah.
24.
וַיִּפְשַׁט גַּם-הוּא בְּגָדָיו, וַיִּתְנַבֵּא גַם-הוּא לִפְנֵי שְׁמוּאֵל, וַיִּפֹּל עָרֹם, כָּל-הַיּוֹם הַהוּא וְכָל-הַלָּיְלָה; עַל-כֵּן, יֹאמְרוּ--הֲגַם שָׁאוּל, בַּנְּבִיאִם.
vayifshat gam-hu begadav, vayitnabe gam-hu lifnei Shemuel, vayipol arom, kol-hayom hahu vekhol-halaylah; al-ken, yomru--hagam Sha'ul, banevi'im.
And he also stripped off his clothes, and he also prophesied before Samuel, and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Wherefore they say: 'Is Saul also among the prophets?'
