1.
וַיְהִי, כְּכַלֹּתוֹ לְדַבֵּר אֶל-שָׁאוּל, וְנֶפֶשׁ יְהוֹנָתָן, נִקְשְׁרָה בְּנֶפֶשׁ דָּוִד; ויאהבו וַיֶּאֱהָבֵהוּ יְהוֹנָתָן, כְּנַפְשׁוֹ.
vayhi kekhaloto ledaber el-shaul venefesh yehonatan nikshera benefesh david vaye'ehu vaye'ehavehu yehonatan kenafsho
And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
2.
וַיִּקָּחֵהוּ שָׁאוּל, בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא; וְלֹא נְתָנוֹ, לָשׁוּב בֵּית אָבִיו.
vayikahehu shaul bayom hahu velo netano lashuv beit avio
And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.
3.
וַיִּכְרֹת יְהוֹנָתָן וְדָוִד, בְּרִית, בְּאַהֲבָתוֹ אֹתוֹ, כְּנַפְשׁוֹ.
vayikrot yehonatan vedavid berit be'ahavato oto kenafsho
Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.
4.
וַיִּתְפַּשֵּׁט יְהוֹנָתָן, אֶת-הַמְּעִיל אֲשֶׁר עָלָיו, וַיִּתְּנֵהוּ, לְדָוִד; וּמַדָּיו, וְעַד-חַרְבּוֹ וְעַד-קַשְׁתּוֹ וְעַד-חֲגֹרוֹ.
vayitpashet yehonatan et-hame'il asher alav vayitnehu ledavid umadav ve'ad-charbo ve'ad-kashto ve'ad-chagoro
And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his apparel, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

וַיֵּצֵא דָוִד בְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר יִשְׁלָחֶנּוּ שָׁאוּל, יַשְׂכִּיל, וַיְשִׂמֵהוּ שָׁאוּל, עַל אַנְשֵׁי הַמִּלְחָמָה; וַיִּיטַב, בְּעֵינֵי כָל-הָעָם, וְגַם, בְּעֵינֵי עַבְדֵי שָׁאוּל.
vayetze David bekhol asher yishlahennu Sha'ul yaskil vay-simehu Sha'ul al anshei hamilkhaha vay-yitav be'enei khol-ha'am vegam be'enei avdei Sha'ul.
And David went out; whithersoever Saul sent him, he had good success; and Saul set him over the men of war; and it was good in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's servants.
6.
וַיְהִי בְּבוֹאָם, בְּשׁוּב דָּוִד מֵהַכּוֹת אֶת-הַפְּלִשְׁתִּי, וַתֵּצֶאנָה הַנָּשִׁים מִכָּל-עָרֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לשור לָשִׁיר וְהַמְּחֹלוֹת, לִקְרַאת שָׁאוּל הַמֶּלֶךְ--בְּתֻפִּים בְּשִׂמְחָה, וּבְשָׁלִשִׁים.
vayhi bevo'am beshuv David mehakot et-hapelishti vate'etzena hanashim mikkol-arei Yisrael lashir vehamekholot likrat Sha'ul hamelekh betupim besimkha uvshalishim.
And it came to pass as they came, when David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with timbrels, with joy, and with three-stringed instruments.
7.
וַתַּעֲנֶינָה הַנָּשִׁים הַמְשַׂחֲקוֹת, וַתֹּאמַרְןָ: הִכָּה שָׁאוּל בַּאֲלָפָו, וְדָוִד בְּרִבְבֹתָיו.
vata'eninah hanashim hameshakhot vato'marna hikhah Sha'ul ba'alafav veDavid berivvotav.
And the women sang one to another in their play, and said: Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.
8.
וַיִּחַר לְשָׁאוּל מְאֹד, וַיֵּרַע בְּעֵינָיו הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה, וַיֹּאמֶר נָתְנוּ לְדָוִד רְבָבוֹת, וְלִי נָתְנוּ הָאֲלָפִים; וְעוֹד לוֹ, אַךְ הַמְּלוּכָה.
vaykhar leSha'ul me'od vayerara be'enav hadavar hazeh vayomer natnu leDavid revavot veli natnu ha'alafim ve'od lo akh hamelukha.
And Saul was very wroth, and this saying displeased him; and he said: 'They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands; and all he lacketh is the kingdom!'
9.
וַיְהִי שָׁאוּל, עון עוֹיֵן אֶת-דָּוִד, מֵהַיּוֹם הַהוּא, וָהָלְאָה.
vayhi sha'ul, ov en et-david, mehayom hahu, vahala.
And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.
10.
וַיְהִי מִמָּחֳרָת, וַתִּצְלַח רוּחַ אֱלֹהִים רָעָה אֶל-שָׁאוּל וַיִּתְנַבֵּא בְתוֹךְ-הַבַּיִת, וְדָוִד מְנַגֵּן בְּיָדוֹ, כְּיוֹם בְּיוֹם; וְהַחֲנִית, בְּיַד-שָׁאוּל.
vayhi mimakhorarat, vatitzlakh ruakh elohim ra'ah el-sha'ul vayitnabe vetokh-habayit, vedavid menagen beyado, keyom beyom; vehakhanit, beyad-sha'ul.
And it came to pass on the morrow, that an evil spirit from God came mightily upon Saul, and he raved in the midst of the house; and David played with his hand, as he did day by day; and Saul had his spear in his hand.
11.
וַיָּטֶל שָׁאוּל, אֶת-הַחֲנִית, וַיֹּאמֶר, אַכֶּה בְדָוִד וּבַקִּיר; וַיִּסֹּב דָּוִד מִפָּנָיו, פַּעֲמָיִם.
vayatel sha'ul, et-hakhanit, vayomer, ake vedavid uvakir; vayisov david mipanav, pa'amayim.
And Saul cast the spear; for he said: 'I will smite David even to the wall.' And David stepped aside out of his presence twice.
12.
וַיִּרָא שָׁאוּל, מִלִּפְנֵי דָוִד: כִּי-הָיָה יְהוָה עִמּוֹ, וּמֵעִם שָׁאוּל סָר.
vayira sha'ul, milifnei david: ki-haya YHWH imo, ume'im sha'ul sar.
And Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him, and was departed from Saul.
13.
וַיְסִרֵהוּ שָׁאוּל מֵעִמּוֹ, וַיְשִׂמֵהוּ לוֹ שַׂר-אָלֶף; וַיֵּצֵא וַיָּבֹא, לִפְנֵי הָעָם.
vaySirehu Sha'ul me'immo, vayiSimehu lo sar-alef; vayyetze vayyavo, lifnei ha'am.
Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.
14.
וַיְהִי דָוִד לְכָל-דְּרָכָו, מַשְׂכִּיל; וַיהוָה, עִמּוֹ.
vayehi David lekhal-derakhav, maskil; vAdonai, immo.
And David had great success in all his ways; and the LORD was with him.
15.
וַיַּרְא שָׁאוּל, אֲשֶׁר-הוּא מַשְׂכִּיל מְאֹד; וַיָּגָר, מִפָּנָיו.
vayyar Sha'ul, asher-hu maskil me'od; vayyagar, mippanav.
And when Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in awe of him.
16.
וְכָל-יִשְׂרָאֵל וִיהוּדָה, אֹהֵב אֶת-דָּוִד: כִּי-הוּא יוֹצֵא וָבָא, לִפְנֵיהֶם.
vekhal-Yisrael viYehudah, ohev et-David: ki-hu yotze vava, lifneihem.
But all Israel and Judah loved David; for he went out and came in before them.
17.
וַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל אֶל-דָּוִד, הִנֵּה בִתִּי הַגְּדוֹלָה מֵרַב אֹתָהּ אֶתֶּן-לְךָ לְאִשָּׁה--אַךְ הֱיֵה-לִי לְבֶן-חַיִל, וְהִלָּחֵם מִלְחֲמוֹת יְהוָה; וְשָׁאוּל אָמַר, אַל-תְּהִי יָדִי בּוֹ, וּתְהִי-בוֹ, יַד-פְּלִשְׁתִּים.
Vayomer Sha'ul el-David, hine vitti hagedolah Merav otah etten-lekha le'ishah--akh heyeh-li leven-khayil, vehillakhem milkhamot YHWH; veSha'ul amar, al-tehi yadi bo, utehi-bo, yad-pelishtim.
And Saul said to David: 'Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife; only be thou valiant for me, and fight the LORD'S battles.' For Saul said: 'Let not my hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.'
18.
וַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִד אֶל-שָׁאוּל, מִי אָנֹכִי וּמִי חַיַּי, מִשְׁפַּחַת אָבִי, בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל--כִּי-אֶהְיֶה חָתָן, לַמֶּלֶךְ.
Vayomer David el-Sha'ul, mi anokhi umi khayay, mishpakhat avi, beYisrael--ki-ehyeh khatan, lamellekh.
And David said unto Saul: 'Who am I, and what is my life, or my father's family in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?'
19.
וַיְהִי, בְּעֵת תֵּת אֶת-מֵרַב בַּת-שָׁאוּל--לְדָוִד; וְהִיא נִתְּנָה לְעַדְרִיאֵל הַמְּחֹלָתִי, לְאִשָּׁה.
Vayhe, be'et tet et-Merav bat-Sha'ul--leDavid; vehi nittennah le'Adriel hamkholati, le'ishah.
But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul's daughter should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to wife.
20.
וַתֶּאֱהַב מִיכַל בַּת-שָׁאוּל, אֶת-דָּוִד; וַיַּגִּדוּ לְשָׁאוּל, וַיִּשַׁר הַדָּבָר בְּעֵינָיו.
Vatte'ehav Mikhal bat-Sha'ul, et-David; vayaggidu leSha'ul, vayyshar hadavar be'einav.
And Michal Saul's daughter loved David; and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.
21.
וַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל אֶתְּנֶנָּה לּוֹ, וּתְהִי-לוֹ לְמוֹקֵשׁ, וּתְהִי-בוֹ, יַד-פְּלִשְׁתִּים; וַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל אֶל-דָּוִד, בִּשְׁתַּיִם תִּתְחַתֵּן בִּי הַיּוֹם.
vayomer sha'ul etenena lo, utehi-lo lemokesh, utehi-bo, yad-pelishtim; vayomer sha'ul el-david, bishtayim tithaten bi hayom.
And Saul said: 'I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.' Wherefore Saul said to David: 'Thou shalt this day be my son-in-law through the one of the twain.'
22.
וַיְצַו שָׁאוּל אֶת-עֲבָדָו, דַּבְּרוּ אֶל-דָּוִד בַּלָּט לֵאמֹר, הִנֵּה חָפֵץ בְּךָ הַמֶּלֶךְ, וְכָל-עֲבָדָיו אֲהֵבוּךָ; וְעַתָּה, הִתְחַתֵּן בַּמֶּלֶךְ.
vaytzav sha'ul et-avadav, dabru el-david balat lemor, hine hafetz bekha hamelekh, vekhal-avadav ahevukha; ve'atah, hithaten bamelekh.
And Saul commanded his servants: 'Speak with David secretly, and say: Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee; now therefore be the king's son-in-law.'
23.
וַיְדַבְּרוּ עַבְדֵי שָׁאוּל, בְּאָזְנֵי דָוִד, אֶת-הַדְּבָרִים, הָאֵלֶּה; וַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִד, הַנְקַלָּה בְעֵינֵיכֶם הִתְחַתֵּן בַּמֶּלֶךְ, וְאָנֹכִי, אִישׁ-רָשׁ וְנִקְלֶה.
vaydabru avde sha'ul, be'ozne david, et-hadevarim, ha'eleh; vayomer david, hankalah ve'eineikhem hithaten bamelekh, ve'anokhi, ish-rash venikleh.
And Saul's servants spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said: 'Seemeth it to you a light thing to be the king's son-in-law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?'
24.
וַיַּגִּדוּ עַבְדֵי שָׁאוּל, לוֹ--לֵאמֹר: כַּדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה, דִּבֶּר דָּוִד.
vayagidu avde sha'ul, lo--lemor: kadevarim ha'eleh, diber david.
And the servants of Saul told him, saying: 'On this manner spoke David.'
25.
וַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל כֹּה-תֹאמְרוּ לְדָוִד, אֵין-חֵפֶץ לַמֶּלֶךְ בְּמֹהַר, כִּי בְּמֵאָה עָרְלוֹת פְּלִשְׁתִּים, לְהִנָּקֵם בְּאֹיְבֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ; וְשָׁאוּל חָשַׁב, לְהַפִּיל אֶת-דָּוִד בְּיַד-פְּלִשְׁתִּים.
vayomer sha'ul koh-tomru ledavid, ein-chefet lamelekh bemohar, ki beme'ah orelot pelishtim, lehinakem be'oyvei hamelekh; vesha'ul khashav, lehappיל et-david beyad-pelishtim.
And Saul said: 'Thus shall ye say to David: The king desireth not any dowry, but a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies.' For Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.
26.
וַיַּגִּדוּ עֲבָדָיו לְדָוִד, אֶת-הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה, וַיִּשַׁר הַדָּבָר בְּעֵינֵי דָוִד, לְהִתְחַתֵּן בַּמֶּלֶךְ; וְלֹא מָלְאוּ, הַיָּמִים.
vayagidu avadav ledavid, et-hadevarim ha'eleh, vayishar hadavar be'einei david, lehitkhaten bamelekh; velo male'u, hayamim.
And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's son-in-law. And the days were not expired;
27.
וַיָּקָם דָּוִד וַיֵּלֶךְ הוּא וַאֲנָשָׁיו, וַיַּךְ בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּים מָאתַיִם אִישׁ, וַיָּבֵא דָוִד אֶת-עָרְלֹתֵיהֶם, וַיְמַלְאוּם לַמֶּלֶךְ לְהִתְחַתֵּן בַּמֶּלֶךְ; וַיִּתֶּן-לוֹ שָׁאוּל אֶת-מִיכַל בִּתּוֹ, לְאִשָּׁה.
vayakam david vayelekh hu va'anashav, vayakh bappelishtim ma'atayim ish, vayave ba david et-orelotehem, vaymal'um lamelekh lehitkhaten bamelekh; vayitten-lo sha'ul et-mikhal bitto, le'ishah.
and David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full number to the king, that he might be the king's son-in-law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.
28.
וַיַּרְא שָׁאוּל וַיֵּדַע, כִּי יְהוָה עִם-דָּוִד; וּמִיכַל בַּת-שָׁאוּל, אֲהֵבַתְהוּ.
vayar sha'ul vayedava, ki YHWH im-david; umikhal bat-sha'ul, ahevat-hu.
And Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David; and Michal Saul's daughter loved him.
29.
וַיֹּאסֶף שָׁאוּל, לֵרֹא מִפְּנֵי דָוִד--עוֹד; וַיְהִי שָׁאוּל אֹיֵב אֶת-דָּוִד, כָּל-הַיָּמִים.
vayosef sha'ul, lero mip'nei david--od; vayehi sha'ul oyev et-david, kol-hayamim.
And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul was David's enemy continually.
30.
וַיֵּצְאוּ, שָׂרֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים; וַיְהִי מִדֵּי צֵאתָם, שָׂכַל דָּוִד מִכֹּל עַבְדֵי שָׁאוּל, וַיִּיקַר שְׁמוֹ, מְאֹד.
vayetze'u, sare felishtim; vayehi midei tzetam, sakhal david mikol avdei sha'ul, vayikar shemo, me'od.
Then the princes of the Philistines went forth; and it came to pass, as often as they went forth, that David prospered more than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.
