1.
וַיֹּאמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל, אֶל-כָּל-יִשְׂרָאֵל, הִנֵּה שָׁמַעְתִּי בְקֹלְכֶם, לְכֹל אֲשֶׁר-אֲמַרְתֶּם לִי; וָאַמְלִיךְ עֲלֵיכֶם, מֶלֶךְ.
vayomer Shmuel, el-kol-Yisrael, hineh shama'ti veqolkhem, lekhol asher-amartem li; va'amlikh aleikhem, melekh.
And Samuel said unto all Israel: 'Behold, I have hearkened unto your voice in all that ye said unto me, and have made a king over you.
2.
וְעַתָּה הִנֵּה הַמֶּלֶךְ מִתְהַלֵּךְ לִפְנֵיכֶם, וַאֲנִי זָקַנְתִּי וָשַׂבְתִּי, וּבָנַי, הִנָּם אִתְּכֶם; וַאֲנִי הִתְהַלַּכְתִּי לִפְנֵיכֶם, מִנְּעֻרַי עַד-הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה.
ve'atah hineh hamelekh mithalekh lifneikhem, va'ani zaqanti vashavti, uvanay, hinnam itkhem; va'ani hithalahti lifneikhem, min'uray ad-hayom hazeh.
And now, behold, the king walketh before you; and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you; and I have walked before you from my youth unto this day.

הִנְנִי עֲנוּ בִי נֶגֶד יְהוָה וְנֶגֶד מְשִׁיחוֹ, אֶת-שׁוֹר מִי לָקַחְתִּי וַחֲמוֹר מִי לָקַחְתִּי וְאֶת-מִי עָשַׁקְתִּי אֶת-מִי רַצּוֹתִי, וּמִיַּד-מִי לָקַחְתִּי כֹפֶר, וְאַעְלִים עֵינַי בּוֹ; וְאָשִׁיב, לָכֶם.
hineni anu vi neged YHWH uneged meshiho, et-shor mi laqahti vakhamor mi laqahti ve'et-mi ashakti et-mi ratzoti, umiyad-mi laqahti kofer, ve'alim einay bo; ve'ashiv, lakhem.
Here I am; witness against me before the LORD, and before His anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? or whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I taken a ransom to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.'
4.
וַיֹּאמְרוּ, לֹא עֲשַׁקְתָּנוּ וְלֹא רַצּוֹתָנוּ; וְלֹא-לָקַחְתָּ מִיַּד-אִישׁ, מְאוּמָה.
vayomru, lo ashatanu velo ratzotanu; velo-laqahta miyad-ish, me'umah.
And they said: 'Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken aught of any man's hand.'

וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם עֵד יְהוָה בָּכֶם, וְעֵד מְשִׁיחוֹ הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה--כִּי לֹא מְצָאתֶם בְּיָדִי, מְאוּמָה; וַיֹּאמֶר, עֵד.
Vayomer alehem ed YHWH bakhem, ve'ed meshikho hayom hazeh--ki lo metzatem beyadi, me'umah; vayomer, ed.
And he said unto them: 'The LORD is witness against you, and His anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found aught in my hand.' And they said: 'He is witness.'
6.
וַיֹּאמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל, אֶל-הָעָם: יְהוָה, אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה אֶת-מֹשֶׁה וְאֶת-אַהֲרֹן, וַאֲשֶׁר הֶעֱלָה אֶת-אֲבֹתֵיכֶם, מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם.
Vayomer Shemu'el, el-ha'am: YHWH, asher asah et-Mosheh ve'et-Aharon, va'asher he'elah et-avotekheym, me'eretz Mitzrayim.
And Samuel said unto the people: 'It is the LORD that made Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.
7.
וְעַתָּה, הִתְיַצְּבוּ וְאִשָּׁפְטָה אִתְּכֶם--לִפְנֵי יְהוָה: אֵת כָּל-צִדְקוֹת יְהוָה, אֲשֶׁר-עָשָׂה אִתְּכֶם וְאֶת-אֲבוֹתֵיכֶם.
Ve'attah, hityatzvu ve'ishafteh itkhem--lifnei YHWH: et kol-tzidkot YHWH, asher-asah itkhem ve'et-avoteykhem.
Now therefore stand still, that I may plead with you before the LORD concerning all the righteous acts of the LORD, which He did to you and to your fathers.
8.
כַּאֲשֶׁר-בָּא יַעֲקֹב, מִצְרָיִם--וַיִּזְעֲקוּ אֲבוֹתֵיכֶם, אֶל-יְהוָה, וַיִּשְׁלַח יְהוָה אֶת-מֹשֶׁה וְאֶת-אַהֲרֹן וַיּוֹצִיאוּ אֶת-אֲבֹתֵיכֶם מִמִּצְרַיִם, וַיֹּשִׁבוּם בַּמָּקוֹם הַזֶּה.
Ka'asher-ba Ya'akov, Mitzrayim--vayt-ze'uku avotekheym, el-YHWH, vayishlach YHWH et-Mosheh ve'et-Aharon vayotzi'u et-avotekheym miMitzrayim, vayoshibum bamakom hazeh.
When Jacob was come into Egypt, then your fathers cried unto the LORD, and the LORD sent Moses and Aaron, who brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and they were made to dwell in this place.
9.
וַיִּשְׁכְּחוּ, אֶת-יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיהֶם; וַיִּמְכֹּר אֹתָם בְּיַד סִיסְרָא שַׂר-צְבָא חָצוֹר וּבְיַד-פְּלִשְׁתִּים, וּבְיַד מֶלֶךְ מוֹאָב, וַיִּלָּחֲמוּ, בָּם.
vayishkechu, et-YHWH eloheihem; vayimkor otam beyad sisra sar-tzeva hatzor uveyad-pelishtim, uveyad melech mo'av, vayilachamu, bam.
But they forgot the LORD their God, and He gave them over into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.
10.
וַיִּזְעֲקוּ אֶל-יְהוָה, ויאמר וַיֹּאמְרוּ חָטָאנוּ, כִּי עָזַבְנוּ אֶת-יְהוָה, וַנַּעֲבֹד אֶת-הַבְּעָלִים וְאֶת-הָעַשְׁתָּרוֹת; וְעַתָּה, הַצִּילֵנוּ מִיַּד אֹיְבֵינוּ--וְנַעַבְדֶךָּ.
vayiz'eku el-YHWH, vayomer vayomru chatanu, ki azavnu et-et-YHWH, vann'avod et-habe'alim ve'et-ha'ashtarot; ve'attah, hatzilenu miyyad oyveinu--vanna'avdekkah.
And they cried unto the LORD, and said: We have sinned, because we have forsaken the LORD, and have served the Baalim and the Ashtaroth; but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve Thee.
11.
וַיִּשְׁלַח יְהוָה אֶת-יְרֻבַּעַל וְאֶת-בְּדָן, וְאֶת-יִפְתָּח וְאֶת-שְׁמוּאֵל; וַיַּצֵּל אֶתְכֶם מִיַּד אֹיְבֵיכֶם, מִסָּבִיב, וַתֵּשְׁבוּ, בֶּטַח.
vayshlach YHWH et-yerubba'al ve'et-bedan, ve'et-yiftach ve'et-shmu'el; vayatzel etchem miyyad oyveichekh, missaviv, vateshevu, betach.
And the LORD sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelt in safety.
12.
וַתִּרְאוּ, כִּי-נָחָשׁ מֶלֶךְ בְּנֵי-עַמּוֹן בָּא עֲלֵיכֶם, וַתֹּאמְרוּ לִי, לֹא כִּי-מֶלֶךְ יִמְלֹךְ עָלֵינוּ: וַיהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם, מַלְכְּכֶם.
vattir'u, ki-nachash melech benei-'amon ba aleichem, vattomru li, lo ki-melech yimlokh aleinu: veYHWH eloheichem, malkekhem.
And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said unto me: Nay, but a king shall reign over us; when the LORD your God was your king.
13.
וְעַתָּה, הִנֵּה הַמֶּלֶךְ אֲשֶׁר בְּחַרְתֶּם--אֲשֶׁר שְׁאֶלְתֶּם; וְהִנֵּה נָתַן יְהוָה עֲלֵיכֶם, מֶלֶךְ.
ve'attah hineh hamelekh asher bekhartem asher she'eltem vehineh natan YHWH aleikhem melekh
Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have asked for; and, behold, the LORD hath set a king over you.
14.
אִם-תִּירְאוּ אֶת-יְהוָה, וַעֲבַדְתֶּם אֹתוֹ וּשְׁמַעְתֶּם בְּקוֹלוֹ, וְלֹא תַמְרוּ, אֶת-פִּי יְהוָה--וִהְיִתֶם גַּם-אַתֶּם, וְגַם-הַמֶּלֶךְ אֲשֶׁר מָלַךְ עֲלֵיכֶם, אַחַר, יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם.
im tira'u et YHWH va'avadtem oto ushema'tem bekolo velo tamru et pi YHWH vihyitem gam attem vegam hamelekh asher malakh aleikhem achar YHWH Eloheikhem
If ye will fear the LORD, and serve Him, and hearken unto His voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, and both ye and also the king that reigneth over you be followers of the LORD your God--;
15.
וְאִם-לֹא תִשְׁמְעוּ בְּקוֹל יְהוָה, וּמְרִיתֶם אֶת-פִּי יְהוָה--וְהָיְתָה יַד-יְהוָה בָּכֶם, וּבַאֲבֹתֵיכֶם.
ve'im lo tishme'u bqol YHWH umeritem et pi YHWH vehayetah yad YHWH bakhem uva'avoteikhem
but if ye will not hearken unto the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall the hand of the LORD be against you, and against your fathers.
16.
גַּם-עַתָּה הִתְיַצְּבוּ וּרְאוּ, אֶת-הַדָּבָר הַגָּדוֹל הַזֶּה, אֲשֶׁר יְהוָה, עֹשֶׂה לְעֵינֵיכֶם.
gam attah hityatzvu ure'u et hadavar hagadol hazeh asher YHWH oseh le'eineikhem
Now therefore stand still and see this great thing, which the LORD will do before your eyes.
17.
הֲלוֹא קְצִיר-חִטִּים, הַיּוֹם--אֶקְרָא אֶל-יְהוָה, וְיִתֵּן קֹלוֹת וּמָטָר; וּדְעוּ וּרְאוּ, כִּי-רָעַתְכֶם רַבָּה אֲשֶׁר עֲשִׂיתֶם בְּעֵינֵי יְהוָה, לִשְׁאוֹל לָכֶם, מֶלֶךְ.
halo katzir-chittim, hayom--eqra el-YHWH, veyitten qolot umatarch; ude'u ur'u, ki-ra'atchem rabbah asher 'asitem be'enei YHWH, lish'ol lakhem, melekh.
Is it not wheat harvest to-day? I will call unto the LORD, that He may send thunder and rain; and ye shall know and see that your wickedness is great, which ye have done in the sight of the LORD, in asking you a king.'
18.
וַיִּקְרָא שְׁמוּאֵל אֶל-יְהוָה, וַיִּתֵּן יְהוָה קֹלֹת וּמָטָר בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא; וַיִּירָא כָל-הָעָם מְאֹד אֶת-יְהוָה, וְאֶת-שְׁמוּאֵל.
vayyiqra Shemu'el el-YHWH, vayyitten YHWH qolot umatar bayyom hahu; vayyira khol-ha'am me'od et-YHWH, ve'et-Shemu'el.
So Samuel called unto the LORD; and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day; and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel.
19.
וַיֹּאמְרוּ כָל-הָעָם אֶל-שְׁמוּאֵל, הִתְפַּלֵּל בְּעַד-עֲבָדֶיךָ אֶל-יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ--וְאַל-נָמוּת: כִּי-יָסַפְנוּ עַל-כָּל-חַטֹּאתֵינוּ רָעָה, לִשְׁאֹל לָנוּ מֶלֶךְ.
vayyomeru khol-ha'am el-Shemu'el, hitpallel ba'ad-'avadeykha el-YHWH Eloheykha--ve'al-namut: ki-yasafnu 'al-kol-chattoteinu ra'ah, lish'ol lanu melekh.
And all the people said unto Samuel: 'Pray for thy servants unto the LORD thy God, that we die not; for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.'
20.
וַיֹּאמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל אֶל-הָעָם, אַל-תִּירָאוּ--אַתֶּם עֲשִׂיתֶם, אֵת כָּל-הָרָעָה הַזֹּאת; אַךְ, אַל-תָּסוּרוּ מֵאַחֲרֵי יְהוָה, וַעֲבַדְתֶּם אֶת-יְהוָה, בְּכָל-לְבַבְכֶם.
vayyomer Shemu'el el-ha'am, al-tirau--attem 'asitem, et kol-har'ah hazzot; akh, al-tasuru me'acharei YHWH, va'avadtem et-YHWH, bekhol-levavchem.
And Samuel said unto the people: 'Fear not; ye have indeed done all this evil; yet turn not aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart;
21.
וְלֹא, תָּסוּרוּ: כִּי אַחֲרֵי הַתֹּהוּ, אֲשֶׁר לֹא-יוֹעִילוּ וְלֹא יַצִּילוּ--כִּי-תֹהוּ הֵמָּה.
velo tasuru ki akharei hatohu asher lo yo'ilu velo yatzilu ki tohu hemmah
and turn ye not aside; for then should ye go after vain things which cannot profit nor deliver, for they are vain.
22.
כִּי לֹא-יִטֹּשׁ יְהוָה, אֶת-עַמּוֹ--בַּעֲבוּר, שְׁמוֹ הַגָּדוֹל: כִּי הוֹאִיל יְהוָה, לַעֲשׂוֹת אֶתְכֶם לוֹ לְעָם.
ki lo yittosh YHWH et ammo ba'avur shemo hagadol ki ho'il YHWH la'asot etkhem lo le'am
For the LORD will not forsake His people for His great name's sake; because it hath pleased the LORD to make you a people unto Himself.
23.
גַּם אָנֹכִי, חָלִילָה לִּי מֵחֲטֹא לַיהוָה--מֵחֲדֹל, לְהִתְפַּלֵּל בַּעַדְכֶם; וְהוֹרֵיתִי אֶתְכֶם, בְּדֶרֶךְ הַטּוֹבָה וְהַיְשָׁרָה.
gam anokhi khalilah li mekhato laYHWH mekhadol lehitpallel ba'adkhem vehoriti etkhem bederekh hattovah vehayesharah
Moreover as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you; but I will instruct you in the good and the right way.
24.
אַךְ יְראוּ אֶת-יְהוָה, וַעֲבַדְתֶּם אֹתוֹ בֶּאֱמֶת--בְּכָל-לְבַבְכֶם: כִּי רְאוּ, אֵת אֲשֶׁר-הִגְדִּל עִמָּכֶם.
akh yeru et YHWH va'avadtem oto be'emet bekhol levavkhem ki re'u et asher higdil immakhem
Only fear the LORD, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider how great things He hath done for you.
25.
וְאִם-הָרֵעַ, תָּרֵעוּ--גַּם-אַתֶּם גַּם-מַלְכְּכֶם, תִּסָּפוּ.
ve'im-hare'a, tare'u--gam-attem gam-malkekhem, tissafu.
But if ye shall still do wickedly, ye shall be swept away, both ye and your king.'
