1.
נִבְחָר שֵׁם, מֵעֹשֶׁר רָב: מִכֶּסֶף וּמִזָּהָב, חֵן טוֹב.
nivkhar shem, me'osher rav: mikhesef umizahav, khen tov.
A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.
2.
עָשִׁיר וָרָשׁ נִפְגָּשׁוּ; עֹשֵׂה כֻלָּם יְהוָה.
ashir varash nifgashu; oseh kullam YHWH.
The rich and the poor meet together--the LORD is the maker of them all.
3.
עָרוּם, רָאָה רָעָה ויסתר וְנִסְתָּר; וּפְתָיִים, עָבְרוּ וְנֶעֱנָשׁוּ.
arum, ra'ah ra'ah vistar venistar; uftayim, avru vene'enashu.
A prudent man seeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the thoughtless pass on, and are punished.
4.
עֵקֶב עֲנָוָה, יִרְאַת יְהוָה; עֹשֶׁר וְכָבוֹד וְחַיִּים.
ekev anavah, yirat YHWH; osher vekhavod vechayim.
The reward of humility is the fear of the LORD, even riches, and honour, and life.
5.
צִנִּים פַּחִים, בְּדֶרֶךְ עִקֵּשׁ; שׁוֹמֵר נַפְשׁוֹ, יִרְחַק מֵהֶם.
tzinnim pachim, bederekh ikkesh; shomer nafsho, yirchak mehem.
Thorns and snares are in the way of the froward; he that keepeth his soul holdeth himself far from them.
6.
חֲנֹךְ לַנַּעַר, עַל-פִּי דַרְכּוֹ-- גַּם כִּי-יַזְקִין, לֹא-יָסוּר מִמֶּנָּה.
khanokh lanar, al-pi darkho-- gam ki-yazkin, lo-yasur mimennah.
Train up a child in the way he should go, and even when he is old, he will not depart from it.
7.
עָשִׁיר, בְּרָשִׁים יִמְשׁוֹל; וְעֶבֶד לֹוֶה, לְאִישׁ מַלְוֶה.
ashir, berashim yimshol; ve'eved loveh, le'ish malveh.
The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
8.
זוֹרֵעַ עַוְלָה, יקצור- יִקְצָר- אָוֶן; וְשֵׁבֶט עֶבְרָתוֹ יִכְלֶה.
zorea avlah, yiktzar- aven; veshevet evrato yikhleh.
He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity; and the rod of his wrath shall fail.
9.
טוֹב-עַיִן, הוּא יְבֹרָךְ: כִּי-נָתַן מִלַּחְמוֹ לַדָּל.
tov-ayin, hu yevorakh: ki-natan millakhmo ladal.
He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.
10.
גָּרֵשׁ לֵץ, וְיֵצֵא מָדוֹן; וְיִשְׁבֹּת, דִּין וְקָלוֹן.
garesh lets, ve'yetse madon; ve'yishbot, din ve'kalon.
Cast out the scorner, and contention will go out; yea, strife and shame will cease.
11.
אֹהֵב טהור- טְהָר- לֵב-- חֵן שְׂפָתָיו, רֵעֵהוּ מֶלֶךְ.
ohev tehor- lev-- hen sefatav, re'ehu melekh.
He that loveth pureness of heart, that hath grace in his lips, the king shall be his friend.
12.
עֵינֵי יְהוָה, נָצְרוּ דָעַת; וַיְסַלֵּף, דִּבְרֵי בֹגֵד.
einei YHWH, natsru da'at; ve'ysalef, divrei voged.
The eyes of the LORD preserve him that hath knowledge, but He overthroweth the words of the faithless man.
13.
אָמַר עָצֵל, אֲרִי בַחוּץ; בְּתוֹךְ רְחֹבוֹת, אֵרָצֵחַ.
amar atsel, ari vakhuts; betokh rekhovot, eratseakh.
The sluggard saith: 'There is a lion without; I shall be slain in the streets.'
14.
שׁוּחָה עֲמֻקָּה, פִּי זָרוֹת; זְעוּם יְהוָה, יפול- יִפָּל- שָׁם.
shukhah amukah, pi zarot; ze'um YHWH, yipfal- yippal- sham.
The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein.
15.
אִוֶּלֶת, קְשׁוּרָה בְלֶב-נָעַר; שֵׁבֶט מוּסָר, יַרְחִיקֶנָּה מִמֶּנּוּ.
iwelet, kshurah velev-na'ar; shevet musar, yarkhikennah mimennu.
Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
16.
עֹשֵׁק דָּל, לְהַרְבּוֹת לוֹ-- נֹתֵן לְעָשִׁיר, אַךְ-לְמַחְסוֹר.
oshek dal, lharbot lo-- noten lashir, akh-lmakhor.
One may oppress the poor, yet will their gain increase; one may give to the rich, yet will want come.
17.
הַט אָזְנְךָ--וּשְׁמַע, דִּבְרֵי חֲכָמִים; וְלִבְּךָ, תָּשִׁית לְדַעְתִּי.
hat oznkha--ushma, divrei khakhamim; wlibkha, tashit ldati.
Incline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thy heart unto my knowledge.
18.
כִּי-נָעִים, כִּי-תִשְׁמְרֵם בְּבִטְנֶךָ; יִכֹּנוּ יַחְדָּו, עַל-שְׂפָתֶיךָ.
ki-na'im, ki-tishmrem beviftenekha; yikonu yakhdav, al-sfatekha.
For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; let them be established altogether upon thy lips.
19.
לִהְיוֹת בַּיהוָה, מִבְטַחֶךָ-- הוֹדַעְתִּיךָ הַיּוֹם אַף-אָתָּה.
lihyot bayHWH, mivtakhekha-- hoda'tika hayom af-atah.
That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made them known to thee this day, even to thee.
20.
הֲלֹא כָתַבְתִּי לְךָ, שלשום שָׁלִשִׁים-- בְּמֹעֵצוֹת וָדָעַת.
halo khatavti lekha, shlishim-- bemo'etsot vada'at.
Have not I written unto thee excellent things of counsels and knowledge;
21.
לְהוֹדִיעֲךָ--קֹשְׁטְ, אִמְרֵי אֱמֶת; לְהָשִׁיב אֲמָרִים אֱמֶת, לְשֹׁלְחֶיךָ.
lehodi'akha--kosht, imrei emet; lehashiv amarim emet, lesholekhekha.
That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth, that thou mightest bring back words of truth to them that send thee?
22.
אַל-תִּגְזָל-דָּל, כִּי דַל-הוּא; וְאַל-תְּדַכֵּא עָנִי בַשָּׁעַר.
Al-tigzal-dal, ki dal-hu; ve'al-tedakeh ani vash'ar.
Rob not the weak, because he is weak, neither crush the poor in the gate;
23.
כִּי-יְהוָה, יָרִיב רִיבָם; וְקָבַע אֶת-קֹבְעֵיהֶם נָפֶשׁ.
Ki-YHWH, yariv rivam; vekava et-kove'eihem nafesh.
For the LORD will plead their cause, and despoil of life those that despoil them.
24.
אַל-תִּתְרַע, אֶת-בַּעַל אָף; וְאֶת-אִישׁ חֵמוֹת, לֹא תָבוֹא.
Al-titra' ah, et-ba'al af; ve'et-ish khemot, lo tavo.
Make no friendship with a man that is given to anger; and with a wrathful man thou shalt not go;
25.
פֶּן-תֶּאֱלַף אֹרְחֹתָו; וְלָקַחְתָּ מוֹקֵשׁ לְנַפְשֶׁךָ.
Pen-te'elaf orokhotav; velakakhta mokesh lenafsekha.
Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.
26.
אַל-תְּהִי בְתֹקְעֵי-כָף; בַּעֹרְבִים, מַשָּׁאוֹת.
al-tehi vetoke'ei khaf; ba'orevim, masha'ot.
Be thou not of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts;
27.
אִם-אֵין-לְךָ לְשַׁלֵּם-- לָמָּה יִקַּח מִשְׁכָּבְךָ, מִתַּחְתֶּיךָ.
im-ein-lekha leshalem-- lammah yikkah mishkavkha, mittakhtekha.
If thou hast not wherewith to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?
28.
אַל-תַּסֵּג, גְּבוּל עוֹלָם-- אֲשֶׁר עָשׂוּ אֲבוֹתֶיךָ.
al-taseg, gevul olam-- asher asu avotekha.
Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.
29.
חָזִיתָ אִישׁ, מָהִיר בִּמְלַאכְתּוֹ-- לִפְנֵי-מְלָכִים יִתְיַצָּב;בַּל-יִתְיַצֵּב, לִפְנֵי חֲשֻׁכִּים.
khazita ish, mahir bimlakhto-- lifnei-melakhim yityatzav; bal-yityatzev, lifnei khashukkim.
Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.
