וַתִּקְרַבְנָה בְּנוֹת צְלָפְחָד, בֶּן-חֵפֶר בֶּן-גִּלְעָד בֶּן-מָכִיר בֶּן-מְנַשֶּׁה, לְמִשְׁפְּחֹת, מְנַשֶּׁה בֶן-יוֹסֵף; וְאֵלֶּה, שְׁמוֹת בְּנֹתָיו--מַחְלָה נֹעָה, וְחָגְלָה וּמִלְכָּה וְתִרְצָה.
vattikravnah benot tzelafchad, ben-chefer ben-gilad ben-machir ben-menasheh, lemishpechot, menasheh ben-Yosef; ve'eleh, shemot benotav--machla no'ah, vechaglah umilkah vetirtzah.
Then drew near the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph; and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.
2.
וַתַּעֲמֹדְנָה לִפְנֵי מֹשֶׁה, וְלִפְנֵי אֶלְעָזָר הַכֹּהֵן, וְלִפְנֵי הַנְּשִׂיאִם, וְכָל-הָעֵדָה--פֶּתַח אֹהֶל-מוֹעֵד, לֵאמֹר.
vatta'amodna lifnei Moshe, velifnei El'azar hakkohen, velifnei hannesi'im, vekol-ha'eda--petach ohel-mo'ed, lemor.
And they stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, at the door of the tent of meeting, saying:

אָבִינוּ, מֵת בַּמִּדְבָּר, וְהוּא לֹא-הָיָה בְּתוֹךְ הָעֵדָה הַנּוֹעָדִים עַל-יְהוָה, בַּעֲדַת-קֹרַח: כִּי-בְחֶטְאוֹ מֵת, וּבָנִים לֹא-הָיוּ לוֹ.
avinu, met bamidbar, vehu lo-haya betoch ha'eda hannoadim al-YHWH, ba'adat-Korach: ki-vchet'o met, ubanim lo-hayu lo.
'Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not among the company of them that gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah, but he died in his own sin; and he had no sons.
4.
לָמָּה יִגָּרַע שֵׁם-אָבִינוּ מִתּוֹךְ מִשְׁפַּחְתּוֹ, כִּי אֵין לוֹ בֵּן; תְּנָה-לָּנוּ אֲחֻזָּה, בְּתוֹךְ אֲחֵי אָבִינוּ.
lamma yigara shem-avinu mitoch mishpachto, ki ein lo ben; tena-lanu achuzat, betoch achei avinu.
Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he had no son? Give unto us a possession among the brethren of our father.'
5.
וַיַּקְרֵב מֹשֶׁה אֶת-מִשְׁפָּטָן, לִפְנֵי יְהוָה.
vayakrev Moshe et-mishpatan, lifnei YHWH.
And Moses brought their cause before the LORD.
6.
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה, אֶל-מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר.
v'omer YHWH, el-Moshe lemor.
And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:
7.
כֵּן, בְּנוֹת צְלָפְחָד דֹּבְרֹת--נָתֹן תִּתֵּן לָהֶם אֲחֻזַּת נַחֲלָה, בְּתוֹךְ אֲחֵי אֲבִיהֶם; וְהַעֲבַרְתָּ אֶת-נַחֲלַת אֲבִיהֶן, לָהֶן.
ken, benot tz'lafchad dobrot--naton titen lahem achuzat nachalah, b'tokh achei aviehem; v'ha'avarta et-nachalat aviehen, lahen.
'The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father's brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them.
8.
וְאֶל-בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, תְּדַבֵּר לֵאמֹר: אִישׁ כִּי-יָמוּת, וּבֵן אֵין לוֹ--וְהַעֲבַרְתֶּם אֶת-נַחֲלָתוֹ, לְבִתּוֹ.
ve'el-bnei Yisrael, tedaber lemor: ish ki-yamut, uven ein lo--veha'avartem et-nachalato, levitto.
And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying: If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter.
9.
וְאִם-אֵין לוֹ, בַּת--וּנְתַתֶּם אֶת-נַחֲלָתוֹ, לְאֶחָיו.
ve'im-ein lo, bat--unetatem et-nachalato, le'echav.
And if he have no daughter, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his brethren.
10.
וְאִם-אֵין לוֹ, אַחִים--וּנְתַתֶּם אֶת-נַחֲלָתוֹ, לַאֲחֵי אָבִיו.
ve'im-ein lo, achim--unetatem et-nachalato, la'achei aviv.
And if he have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his father's brethren.
11.
וְאִם-אֵין אַחִים, לְאָבִיו--וּנְתַתֶּם אֶת-נַחֲלָתוֹ לִשְׁאֵרוֹ הַקָּרֹב אֵלָיו מִמִּשְׁפַּחְתּוֹ, וְיָרַשׁ אֹתָהּ; וְהָיְתָה לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, לְחֻקַּת מִשְׁפָּט, כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְהוָה, אֶת-מֹשֶׁה.
ve'im-ein achim, le'aviv--unetatem et-nachalato lish'ero hakarov elav mimishpachto, veyarash otah; vehayetah livnei Yisrael, lechukat mishpat, ka'asher tzivah YHWH, et-Moshe.
And if his father have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his kinsman that is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it. And it shall be unto the children of Israel a statute of judgment, as the LORD commanded Moses.'
12.
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל-מֹשֶׁה, עֲלֵה אֶל-הַר הָעֲבָרִים הַזֶּה; וּרְאֵה, אֶת-הָאָרֶץ, אֲשֶׁר נָתַתִּי, לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל.
vayomer YHWH el-Moshe, ale el-har ha'avarim hazeh; ure'h, et-ha'aretz, asher natati, livnei Yisrael.
And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Get thee up into this mountain of Abarim, and behold the land which I have given unto the children of Israel.
13.
וְרָאִיתָה אֹתָהּ, וְנֶאֱסַפְתָּ אֶל-עַמֶּיךָ גַּם-אָתָּה, כַּאֲשֶׁר נֶאֱסַף, אַהֲרֹן אָחִיךָ.
veraita otah, vene'asafta el-ammekicha gam-atah, ka'asher ne'esaf, Aharon achicha.
And when thou hast seen it, thou also shalt be gathered unto thy people, as Aaron thy brother was gathered;
14.
כַּאֲשֶׁר מְרִיתֶם פִּי בְּמִדְבַּר-צִן, בִּמְרִיבַת הָעֵדָה, לְהַקְדִּישֵׁנִי בַמַּיִם, לְעֵינֵיהֶם: הֵם מֵי-מְרִיבַת קָדֵשׁ, מִדְבַּר-צִן.
ka'asher meritem pi bemidbar-tzin, bimrivat ha'edah, lehakdisheni vamayim, le'eineihem: hem mei-merivat kadesh, midbar-tzin.
because ye rebelled against My commandment in the wilderness of Zin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify Me at the waters before their eyes.'--These are the waters of Meribath-kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.--
15.
וַיְדַבֵּר מֹשֶׁה, אֶל-יְהוָה לֵאמֹר.
vaydaber Moshe, el-YHWH lemor.
And Moses spoke unto the LORD, saying:
16.
יִפְקֹד יְהוָה, אֱלֹהֵי הָרוּחֹת לְכָל-בָּשָׂר, אִישׁ, עַל-הָעֵדָה.
yipkod YHWH, Elohei haruchot lekhal-basar, ish, al-ha'edah.
'Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation,
17.
אֲשֶׁר-יֵצֵא לִפְנֵיהֶם, וַאֲשֶׁר יָבֹא לִפְנֵיהֶם, וַאֲשֶׁר יוֹצִיאֵם, וַאֲשֶׁר יְבִיאֵם; וְלֹא תִהְיֶה, עֲדַת יְהוָה, כַּצֹּאן, אֲשֶׁר אֵין-לָהֶם רֹעֶה.
asher-yetze lifnehem, va'asher yavo lifnehem, va'asher yotzi'em, va'asher yevi'em; ve'lo tihyeh, adat YHWH, katzon, asher ein-lahem ro'eh.
who may go out before them, and who may come in before them, and who may lead them out, and who may bring them in; that the congregation of the LORD be not as sheep which have no shepherd.'
18.
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל-מֹשֶׁה, קַח-לְךָ אֶת-יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בִּן-נוּן--אִישׁ, אֲשֶׁר-רוּחַ בּוֹ; וְסָמַכְתָּ אֶת-יָדְךָ, עָלָיו.
vayomer YHWH el-Moshe, kach-lecha et-Yehoshua bin-nun--ish, asher-ruach bo; vesamachta et-yadecha, alav.
And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is spirit, and lay thy hand upon him;
19.
וְהַעֲמַדְתָּ אֹתוֹ, לִפְנֵי אֶלְעָזָר הַכֹּהֵן, וְלִפְנֵי, כָּל-הָעֵדָה; וְצִוִּיתָה אֹתוֹ, לְעֵינֵיהֶם.
veha'amadta oto, lifnei El'azar hakohen, velifnei, kol-ha'edah; vetzivita oto, le'einehem.
and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and give him a charge in their sight.
20.
וְנָתַתָּה מֵהוֹדְךָ, עָלָיו--לְמַעַן יִשְׁמְעוּ, כָּל-עֲדַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל.
venatata mehodkha, alav--lema'an yishme'u, kol-adat bene Yisrael.
And thou shalt put of thy honour upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may hearken.
21.
וְלִפְנֵי אֶלְעָזָר הַכֹּהֵן יַעֲמֹד, וְשָׁאַל לוֹ בְּמִשְׁפַּט הָאוּרִים לִפְנֵי יְהוָה: עַל-פִּיו יֵצְאוּ וְעַל-פִּיו יָבֹאוּ, הוּא וְכָל-בְּנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל אִתּוֹ--וְכָל-הָעֵדָה.
velifnei El'azar hakohen ya'amod, veshal'al lo bemishpat ha'urim lifnei YHWH: al-piy yetse'u ve'al-piy yabo'u, hu vekhol-bene-Yisrael ito--vekhol-ha'edah.
And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before the LORD; at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.'
22.
וַיַּעַשׂ מֹשֶׁה, כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְהוָה אֹתוֹ; וַיִּקַּח אֶת-יְהוֹשֻׁעַ, וַיַּעֲמִדֵהוּ לִפְנֵי אֶלְעָזָר הַכֹּהֵן, וְלִפְנֵי, כָּל-הָעֵדָה.
vaya'as Moshe, ka'asher tsivah YHWH oto; vayikach et-Yehoshua, vaya'amidehu lifnei El'azar hakohen, velifnei, kol-ha'edah.
And Moses did as the LORD commanded him; and he took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation.
23.
וַיִּסְמֹךְ אֶת-יָדָיו עָלָיו, וַיְצַוֵּהוּ, כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר יְהוָה, בְּיַד-מֹשֶׁה.
vayismokh et-yadav alav vaytzavehu ka'asher diber YHWH beyad-Mosheh.
And he laid his hands upon him, and gave him a charge, as the LORD spoke by the hand of Moses.
