1.
וַיֵּשֶׁב יִשְׂרָאֵל, בַּשִּׁטִּים; וַיָּחֶל הָעָם, לִזְנוֹת אֶל-בְּנוֹת מוֹאָב.
vayyeshev Yisrael bashittim vayyachel ha'am liznot el-benot Mo'av.
And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit harlotry with the daughters of Moab.
2.
וַתִּקְרֶאןָ לָעָם, לְזִבְחֵי אֱלֹהֵיהֶן; וַיֹּאכַל הָעָם, וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ לֵאלֹהֵיהֶן.
vattiqre'na la'am lezivchei Eloheihen vayyokhal ha'am vayyishtachavvu le'Eloheihen.
And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods; and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.
3.
וַיִּצָּמֶד יִשְׂרָאֵל, לְבַעַל פְּעוֹר; וַיִּחַר-אַף יְהוָה, בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל.
vayyitzamed Yisrael leBa'al Pe'or vayyichar-af YHWH beYisrael.
And Israel joined himself unto the Baal of Peor; and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.

וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל-מֹשֶׁה, קַח אֶת-כָּל-רָאשֵׁי הָעָם, וְהוֹקַע אוֹתָם לַיהוָה, נֶגֶד הַשָּׁמֶשׁ; וְיָשֹׁב חֲרוֹן אַף-יְהוָה, מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל.
vayomer YHWH el-Moshe, kakh et-kol-rashei ha'am, vehoka otam laYHWH, neged hashemesh; veyashov kharon af-YHWH, miYisrael.
And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up unto the LORD in face of the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel.'

וַיֹּאמֶר מֹשֶׁה, אֶל-שֹׁפְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל: הִרְגוּ אִישׁ אֲנָשָׁיו, הַנִּצְמָדִים לְבַעַל פְּעוֹר.
vayomer Moshe, el-shoftei Yisrael: hirgu ish anashav, hannitzmadim leba'al pe'or.
And Moses said unto the judges of Israel: 'Slay ye every one his men that have joined themselves unto the Baal of Peor.'
6.
וְהִנֵּה אִישׁ מִבְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בָּא, וַיַּקְרֵב אֶל-אֶחָיו אֶת-הַמִּדְיָנִית, לְעֵינֵי מֹשֶׁה, וּלְעֵינֵי כָּל-עֲדַת בְּנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל; וְהֵמָּה בֹכִים, פֶּתַח אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד.
vehineh ish mibnei Yisrael ba, vayakrev el-akhayv et-hadyanit, le'einei Moshe, ule'einei kol-adat bnei-Yisrael; vehemmah vokhim, petakh ohel mo'ed.
And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the tent of meeting.
7.
וַיַּרְא, פִּינְחָס בֶּן-אֶלְעָזָר, בֶּן-אַהֲרֹן, הַכֹּהֵן; וַיָּקָם מִתּוֹךְ הָעֵדָה, וַיִּקַּח רֹמַח בְּיָדוֹ.
vayar pinchas ben-el'azar ben-aharon hakohen vayakam mitoch ha'edah vayikach romach beyado.
And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand.

וַיָּבֹא אַחַר אִישׁ-יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל-הַקֻּבָּה, וַיִּדְקֹר אֶת-שְׁנֵיהֶם--אֵת אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל, וְאֶת-הָאִשָּׁה אֶל-קֳבָתָהּ; וַתֵּעָצַר, הַמַּגֵּפָה, מֵעַל, בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל.
vayavo achar ish-yisrael el-hakubah vayidkor et-shnehem et ish yisrael ve'et-ha'ishah el-kovatah vate'atzar hamagefah me'al beney yisrael.
And he went after the man of Israel into the chamber, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
9.
וַיִּהְיוּ, הַמֵּתִים בַּמַּגֵּפָה--אַרְבָּעָה וְעֶשְׂרִים, אָלֶף.
vayihiyu hametim bamagefah arba'ah ve'esrim alef.
And those that died by the plague were twenty and four thousand.
10.
וַיְדַבֵּר יְהוָה, אֶל-מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר.
vaydaberi YHWH, el-Mosheh lemor.
And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:
11.
פִּינְחָס בֶּן-אֶלְעָזָר בֶּן-אַהֲרֹן הַכֹּהֵן, הֵשִׁיב אֶת-חֲמָתִי מֵעַל בְּנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל, בְּקַנְאוֹ אֶת-קִנְאָתִי, בְּתוֹכָם; וְלֹא-כִלִּיתִי אֶת-בְּנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל, בְּקִנְאָתִי.
Pinechas ben-El'azar ben-Aharon hakohen, heshiv et-chamati me'al bene-Yisrael, bekanto et-kin'ati, betokham; velo-khilliti et-bene-Yisrael, bekin'ati.
'Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned My wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was very jealous for My sake among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in My jealousy.
12.
לָכֵן, אֱמֹר: הִנְנִי נֹתֵן לוֹ אֶת-בְּרִיתִי, שָׁלוֹם.
lakhen, emor: hinni noten lo et-beriti, shalom.
Wherefore say: Behold, I give unto him My covenant of peace;
13.
וְהָיְתָה לּוֹ וּלְזַרְעוֹ אַחֲרָיו, בְּרִית כְּהֻנַּת עוֹלָם--תַּחַת, אֲשֶׁר קִנֵּא לֵאלֹהָיו, וַיְכַפֵּר, עַל-בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל.
vehayetah lo ulezaro acharav, berit kehunat olam--tachat, asher kinne lelohav, vaykhaper, al-bnei Yisrael.
and it shall be unto him, and to his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.'
14.
וְשֵׁם אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל הַמֻּכֶּה, אֲשֶׁר הֻכָּה אֶת-הַמִּדְיָנִית--זִמְרִי, בֶּן-סָלוּא: נְשִׂיא בֵית-אָב, לַשִּׁמְעֹנִי.
veshem ish Yisrael hamukkeh, asher hukka et-hamidyanit--zimri, ben-salu: nesi veit-av, lashim'oni.
Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers' house among the Simeonites.
15.
וְשֵׁם הָאִשָּׁה הַמֻּכָּה הַמִּדְיָנִית, כָּזְבִּי בַת-צוּר: רֹאשׁ אֻמּוֹת בֵּית-אָב בְּמִדְיָן, הוּא.
veshem ha'ishshah hamukkah hamidyanit, kazbi vat-tsur: rosh ummot beit-av bemidyan, hu.
And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a fathers' house in Midian.
16.
וַיְדַבֵּר יְהוָה, אֶל-מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר.
Vaydaber YHWH, el-Moshe lemor.
And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:
17.
צָרוֹר, אֶת-הַמִּדְיָנִים; וְהִכִּיתֶם, אוֹתָם.
Tzaror, et-hamidyanim; vehikitem, otam.
'Harass the Midianites, and smite them;
18.
כִּי צֹרְרִים הֵם לָכֶם, בְּנִכְלֵיהֶם אֲשֶׁר-נִכְּלוּ לָכֶם עַל-דְּבַר-פְּעוֹר; וְעַל-דְּבַר כָּזְבִּי בַת-נְשִׂיא מִדְיָן, אֲחֹתָם, הַמֻּכָּה בְיוֹם-הַמַּגֵּפָה, עַל-דְּבַר-פְּעוֹר.
Ki tzorrim hem lakhem, benikhleihem asher-niklu lakhem al-dvar-pe'or; ve'al-dvar kazbi vat-nesi midyan, akhotam, hamukah veyom-hagefah, al-dvar-pe'or.
for they harass you, by their wiles wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.'
