וַיַּעַן אִיּוֹב, וַיֹּאמַר.
vayya'an iyyov, vayyomar.
Then Job answered and said:

2.
עַד-אָנָה, תּוֹגְיוּן נַפְשִׁי; וּתְדַכּאוּנַנִי בְמִלִּים.
ad-anah togyun nafshi utedaka'unani bemilim.
How long will ye vex my soul, and crush me with words?
3.
זֶה עֶשֶׂר פְּעָמִים, תַּכְלִימוּנִי; לֹא-תֵבֹשׁוּ, תַּהְכְּרוּ-לִי.
zeh eser pe'amin taklimuni lo-tevoshu tahkeru-li.
These ten times have ye reproached me; ye are not ashamed that ye deal harshly with me.
4.
וְאַף-אָמְנָם שָׁגִיתִי; אִתִּי, תָּלִין מְשׁוּגָתִי.
ve'af-amnam shagiti iti talin meshugati.
And be it indeed that I have erred, mine error remaineth with myself.
5.
אִם-אָמְנָם, עָלַי תַּגְדִּילוּ; וְתוֹכִיחוּ עָלַי, חֶרְפָּתִי.
im-amnam alay tagdilu vetokhichu alay cherpati.
If indeed ye will magnify yourselves against me, and plead against me my reproach;
6.
דְּעוּ-אֵפוֹ, כִּי-אֱלוֹהַּ עִוְּתָנִי; וּמְצוּדוֹ, עָלַי הִקִּיף.
de'u-efo, ki-Eloah 'ivtani; umtzudo, 'alay hikif.
Know now that God hath subverted my cause, and hath compassed me with His net.
7.
הֵן אֶצְעַק חָמָס, וְלֹא אֵעָנֶה; אֲשַׁוַּע, וְאֵין מִשְׁפָּט.
hen etz'ak khamas, velo e'aneh; ashavava', ve'ein mishpat.
Behold, I cry out: 'Violence!' but I am not heard; I cry aloud, but there is no justice.
8.
אָרְחִי גָדַר, וְלֹא אֶעֱבוֹר; וְעַל נְתִיבוֹתַי, חֹשֶׁךְ יָשִׂים.
arkhi gadar, velo e'evor; ve'al netivotay, khoshek yasim.
He hath fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and hath set darkness in my paths.
9.
כְּבוֹדִי, מֵעָלַי הִפְשִׁיט; וַיָּסַר, עֲטֶרֶת רֹאשִׁי.
kevodi, me'alay hipshit; vayasar, ateret roshi.
He hath stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head.
10.
יִתְּצֵנִי סָבִיב, וָאֵלַךְ; וַיַּסַּע כָּעֵץ, תִּקְוָתִי.
yitze'eni saviv, va'elakh; vayasa ka'etz, tikvati.
He hath broken me down on every side, and I am gone; and my hope hath He plucked up like a tree.
11.
וַיַּחַר עָלַי אַפּוֹ; וַיַּחְשְׁבֵנִי לוֹ כְצָרָיו.
vayahar alay apo; vayakhsheveni lo khetzarav.
He hath also kindled His wrath against me, and He counteth me unto Him as one of His adversaries.
12.
יַחַד, יָבֹאוּ גְדוּדָיו--וַיָּסֹלּוּ עָלַי דַּרְכָּם; וַיַּחֲנוּ סָבִיב לְאָהֳלִי.
yakhad, yavo'u gedudav--vayasolu alay darkam; vaykhanu saviv le'oholi.
His troops come on together, and cast up their way against me, and encamp round about my tent.
13.
אַחַי, מֵעָלַי הִרְחִיק; וְיֹדְעַי, אַךְ-זָרוּ מִמֶּנִּי.
akhay, me'alay hirkhik; veyode'ay, akh-zaru mimeni.
He hath put my brethren far from me, and mine acquaintance are wholly estranged from me.
14.
חָדְלוּ קְרוֹבָי; וּמְיֻדָּעַי שְׁכֵחוּנִי.
chadlu krovay; ume'yuda'ay shechechuni.
My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me.
15.
גָּרֵי בֵיתִי וְאַמְהֹתַי, לְזָר תַּחְשְׁבֻנִי; נָכְרִי, הָיִיתִי בְעֵינֵיהֶם.
gare beti ve'amhotay, lezar tachshuvuni; nochri, hayiti ve'einehem.
They that dwell in my house, and my maids, count me for a stranger; I am become an alien in their sight.
16.
לְעַבְדִּי קָרָאתִי, וְלֹא יַעֲנֶה; בְּמוֹ-פִי, אֶתְחַנֶּן-לוֹ.
le'avdi karati, velo ya'aneh; bemo-fi, etchannen-lo.
I call unto my servant, and he giveth me no answer, though I entreat him with my mouth.
17.
רוּחִי, זָרָה לְאִשְׁתִּי; וְחַנֹּתִי, לִבְנֵי בִטְנִי.
ruchi, zarah le'ishti; vechannoti, livnei vitni.
My breath is abhorred of my wife, and I am loathsome to the children of my tribe.
18.
גַּם-עֲוִילִים, מָאֲסוּ בִי; אָקוּמָה, וַיְדַבְּרוּ-בִי.
gam-a'vilim, ma'asu vi; akumah, vaydabru-vi.
Even urchins despised me; if I arise, they speak against me.
19.
תִּעֲבוּנִי, כָּל-מְתֵי סוֹדִי; וְזֶה-אָהַבְתִּי, נֶהְפְּכוּ-בִי.
ti'avuni, kol-metei sodi; veze-ahavti, nehpekhu-vi.
All my intimate friends abhor me; and they whom I loved are turned against me.
20.
בְּעוֹרִי וּבִבְשָׂרִי, דָּבְקָה עַצְמִי; וָאֶתְמַלְּטָה, בְּעוֹר שִׁנָּי.
be'ori uvivsari, davkah atzmi; va'etmaletah, be'or shinnay.
My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth.
21.
חָנֻּנִי חָנֻּנִי אַתֶּם רֵעָי: כִּי יַד-אֱלוֹהַּ, נָגְעָה בִּי.
khanuni khanuni attem re'ai: ki yad-Eloah, nag'ah bi.
Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God hath touched me.
22.
לָמָּה, תִּרְדְּפֻנִי כְמוֹ-אֵל; וּמִבְּשָׂרִי, לֹא תִשְׂבָּעוּ.
lamah tirdfuni khemo-el umibesari lo tishba'u
Why do ye persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh?
23.
מִי-יִתֵּן אֵפוֹ, וְיִכָּתְבוּן מִלָּי: מִי-יִתֵּן בַּסֵּפֶר וְיֻחָקוּ.
mi-yiten efo veyikhatevun milay mi-yiten basefer veyuhaku
Oh that my words were now written! Oh that they were inscribed in a book!
24.
בְּעֵט-בַּרְזֶל וְעֹפָרֶת-- לָעַד, בַּצּוּר יֵחָצְבוּן.
be'et-barzel ve'oferet la'ad batzur yehatzevun
That with an iron pen and lead they were graven in the rock for ever!
25.
וַאֲנִי יָדַעְתִּי, גֹּאֲלִי חָי; וְאַחֲרוֹן, עַל-עָפָר יָקוּם.
va'ani yada'ti go'ali khay ve'akharon al-afar yakum
But as for me, I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that He will witness at the last upon the dust;
26.
וְאַחַר עוֹרִי, נִקְּפוּ-זֹאת; וּמִבְּשָׂרִי, אֶחֱזֶה אֱלוֹהַּ.
ve'achar ori, nikkefu-zot; umibesari, ekhezeh elo'ah.
And when after my skin this is destroyed, then without my flesh shall I see God;
27.
אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי, אֶחֱזֶה-לִּי--וְעֵינַי רָאוּ וְלֹא-זָר: כָּלוּ כִלְיֹתַי בְּחֵקִי.
asher ani, ekhezeh-li--ve'einay ra'u velo-zar: kalu khilyotay bekheki.
Whom I, even I, shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another's. My reins are consumed within me.
28.
כִּי תֹאמְרוּ, מַה-נִּרְדָּף-לוֹ; וְשֹׁרֶשׁ דָּבָר, נִמְצָא-בִי.
ki to'meru, mah-nirdaf-lo; veshoresh davar, nimtsa-vi.
If ye say: 'How we will persecute him!' seeing that the root of the matter is found in me;
29.
גּוּרוּ לָכֶם, מִפְּנֵי-חֶרֶב--כִּי-חֵמָה, עֲוֺנוֹת חָרֶב: לְמַעַן תֵּדְעוּן שדין שַׁדּוּן.
guru lakhem, mipenei-kherev--ki-khemah, avonot kharev: lemaan tede'un shadin shadun.
Be ye afraid of the sword; for wrath bringeth the punishments of the sword, that ye may know there is a judgment.
