1.
וַיַּרְא יַעֲקֹב, כִּי יֶשׁ-שֶׁבֶר בְּמִצְרָיִם; וַיֹּאמֶר יַעֲקֹב לְבָנָיו, לָמָּה תִּתְרָאוּ.
Vayyar Ya'akov, ki yesh-shever beMitzrayim; vayyomer Ya'akov lebaniv, lammah titra'u.
Now Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, and Jacob said unto his sons: 'Why do ye look one upon another?'
2.
וַיֹּאמֶר--הִנֵּה שָׁמַעְתִּי, כִּי יֶשׁ-שֶׁבֶר בְּמִצְרָיִם; רְדוּ-שָׁמָּה וְשִׁבְרוּ-לָנוּ מִשָּׁם, וְנִחְיֶה וְלֹא נָמוּת.
vayomer--hinneh shama'ti, ki yesh-shever bemitzrayim; redu-shammah veshivru-lanu mishsham, venichyeh velo namut.
And he said: 'Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt. Get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die.'
3.
וַיֵּרְדוּ אֲחֵי-יוֹסֵף, עֲשָׂרָה, לִשְׁבֹּר בָּר, מִמִּצְרָיִם.
vayeredu ach-yosef, asarah, lishbor bar, mimmitzrayim.
And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy corn from Egypt.
4.
וְאֶת-בִּנְיָמִין אֲחִי יוֹסֵף, לֹא-שָׁלַח יַעֲקֹב אֶת-אֶחָיו: כִּי אָמַר, פֶּן-יִקְרָאֶנּוּ אָסוֹן.
ve'et-Binyamin achi Yosef, lo-shalach Ya'akov et-echav: ki amar, pen-yikra'ennu ason.
But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said: 'Lest peradventure harm befall him.'
5.
וַיָּבֹאוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, לִשְׁבֹּר בְּתוֹךְ הַבָּאִים: כִּי-הָיָה הָרָעָב, בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן.
vayabo'u bene Yisrael, lishbor betokh haba'im: ki-hayah hara'av, be'eretz Kena'an.
And the sons of Israel came to buy among those that came; for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
6.
וְיוֹסֵף, הוּא הַשַּׁלִּיט עַל-הָאָרֶץ--הוּא הַמַּשְׁבִּיר, לְכָל-עַם הָאָרֶץ; וַיָּבֹאוּ אֲחֵי יוֹסֵף, וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ-לוֹ אַפַּיִם אָרְצָה.
veyosef, hu hashallit al-ha'aretz--hu hamashbir, lekhol-am ha'aretz; vayavo'u achei yosef, vayishtachavu-lo appayim artzah.
And Joseph was the governor over the land; he it was that sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph's brethren came, and bowed down to him with their faces to the earth.

וַיַּרְא יוֹסֵף אֶת-אֶחָיו, וַיַּכִּרֵם; וַיִּתְנַכֵּר אֲלֵיהֶם וַיְדַבֵּר אִתָּם קָשׁוֹת, וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם מֵאַיִן בָּאתֶם, וַיֹּאמְרוּ, מֵאֶרֶץ כְּנַעַן לִשְׁבָּר-אֹכֶל.
Vayar Yosef et-ekhav, vayakkirem; vayyitnaker alehem vaydaber ittam kashot, vayomer alehem me'ayin ba'tem, vayomru, me'eretz kena'an lishbar-okhel.
And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spoke roughly with them; and he said unto them: 'Whence come ye?' And they said: 'From the land of Canaan to buy food.'
8.
וַיַּכֵּר יוֹסֵף, אֶת-אֶחָיו; וְהֵם, לֹא הִכִּרֻהוּ.
vayakker Yosef, et-ekhav; vehem, lo hikkiruhu.
And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew him not.
9.
וַיִּזְכֹּר יוֹסֵף--אֵת הַחֲלֹמוֹת, אֲשֶׁר חָלַם לָהֶם; וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם מְרַגְּלִים אַתֶּם, לִרְאוֹת אֶת-עֶרְוַת הָאָרֶץ בָּאתֶם.
vayizkor Yosef -- et hakhalomot, asher khalam lahem; vayomer alehem meraglim attem, lirot et-ervat ha'aretz batem.
And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them: 'Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.'
10.
וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו, לֹא אֲדֹנִי; וַעֲבָדֶיךָ בָּאוּ, לִשְׁבָּר-אֹכֶל.
vayomeru elav, lo adoni; va'avadeykha ba'u, lishbar-okhel.
And they said unto him: 'Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come.
11.
כֻּלָּנוּ, בְּנֵי אִישׁ-אֶחָד נָחְנוּ; כֵּנִים אֲנַחְנוּ, לֹא-הָיוּ עֲבָדֶיךָ מְרַגְּלִים.
kullanu, bene ish-echad nachnu; kenim anachnu, lo-hayu avadecha meraglim.
We are all one man's sons; we are upright men, thy servants are no spies.'
12.
וַיֹּאמֶר, אֲלֵהֶם: לֹא, כִּי-עֶרְוַת הָאָרֶץ בָּאתֶם לִרְאוֹת.
Vayomer, alehem: lo, ki-ervat ha'aretz batem lirot.
And he said unto them: 'Nay, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.'
13.
וַיֹּאמְרוּ, שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר עֲבָדֶיךָ אַחִים אֲנַחְנוּ בְּנֵי אִישׁ-אֶחָד--בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן; וְהִנֵּה הַקָּטֹן אֶת-אָבִינוּ הַיּוֹם, וְהָאֶחָד אֵינֶנּוּ.
vayomeru, shenem asar avadeykha achim anachnu benei ish-echad--be'eretz kena'an; vehinneh hakatn et-avinu hayom, veha'echad einennu.
And they said: 'We thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.'
14.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם, יוֹסֵף: הוּא, אֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתִּי אֲלֵכֶם לֵאמֹר--מְרַגְּלִים אַתֶּם.
Vayomer alehem, Yosef: hu, asher dibarti alekhem lemor--meraglim attem.
And Joseph said unto them: 'That is it that I spoke unto you, saying: Ye are spies.
15.
בְּזֹאת, תִּבָּחֵנוּ: חֵי פַרְעֹה אִם-תֵּצְאוּ מִזֶּה, כִּי אִם-בְּבוֹא אֲחִיכֶם הַקָּטֹן הֵנָּה.
bezot, tibbakhenu: khe far'oh im-tetze'u mizeh, ki im-bevo akhiykhem haqatton hennah.
Hereby ye shall be proved, as Pharaoh liveth, ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither.
16.
שִׁלְחוּ מִכֶּם אֶחָד, וְיִקַּח אֶת-אֲחִיכֶם, וְאַתֶּם הֵאָסְרוּ, וְיִבָּחֲנוּ דִּבְרֵיכֶם הַאֱמֶת אִתְּכֶם; וְאִם-לֹא--חֵי פַרְעֹה, כִּי מְרַגְּלִים אַתֶּם.
shilchu mikem echad, veyikkach et-achichem, ve'attem he'asru, veyibachanu divreichem ha'emet ittchem; ve'im-lo--chei Par'oh, ki meraggolim attem.
Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be bound, that your words may be proved, whether there be truth in you; or else, as Pharaoh liveth, surely ye are spies.'
17.
וַיֶּאֱסֹף אֹתָם אֶל-מִשְׁמָר, שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים.
vay'esof otam el-mishmar, sheloshet yamim.
And he put them all together into ward three days.
18.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם יוֹסֵף בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁי, זֹאת עֲשׂוּ וִחְיוּ; אֶת-הָאֱלֹהִים, אֲנִי יָרֵא.
Vayomer alehem Yosef bayom hashelishi, zot ashu vikhyu; et-ha'Elohim, ani yarei.
And Joseph said unto them the third day. 'This do, and live; for I fear God:
19.
אִם-כֵּנִים אַתֶּם--אֲחִיכֶם אֶחָד, יֵאָסֵר בְּבֵית מִשְׁמַרְכֶם; וְאַתֶּם לְכוּ הָבִיאוּ, שֶׁבֶר רַעֲבוֹן בָּתֵּיכֶם.
im-kenim attem--akhykhem ekhad, ye'aser beveit mishmarkhem; ve'attem lekho havi'u, shever ra'avon battekhem.
if ye be upright men, let one of your brethren be bound in your prison-house; but go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses;
20.
וְאֶת-אֲחִיכֶם הַקָּטֹן תָּבִיאוּ אֵלַי, וְיֵאָמְנוּ דִבְרֵיכֶם וְלֹא תָמוּתוּ; וַיַּעֲשׂוּ-כֵן.
ve'et-akhiykhem hakatón tavi'u elay, veye'amnu divreykhem velo tamutu; vayya'asu-khen.
and bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die.' And they did so.
21.
וַיֹּאמְרוּ אִישׁ אֶל-אָחִיו, אֲבָל אֲשֵׁמִים אֲנַחְנוּ עַל-אָחִינוּ, אֲשֶׁר רָאִינוּ צָרַת נַפְשׁוֹ בְּהִתְחַנְנוֹ אֵלֵינוּ, וְלֹא שָׁמָעְנוּ; עַל-כֵּן בָּאָה אֵלֵינוּ, הַצָּרָה הַזֹּאת.
vayomeru ish el-achiv, aval ashemim anachnu al-achinu, asher ra'inu tzarat nafsho behithchanno eleinu, velo shama'nu; al-ken ba'ah eleinu, hatzarah hazot.
And they said one to another: 'We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.'
22.
וַיַּעַן רְאוּבֵן אֹתָם לֵאמֹר, הֲלוֹא אָמַרְתִּי אֲלֵיכֶם לֵאמֹר אַל-תֶּחֶטְאוּ בַיֶּלֶד--וְלֹא שְׁמַעְתֶּם; וְגַם-דָּמוֹ, הִנֵּה נִדְרָשׁ.
vayia'n Re'uven otam lemor, halo' amarti aleikhem lemor al-tekhet'u vayeled--velo shema'tem; vegam-damo, hinneh nidrash.
And Reuben answered them, saying: 'Spoke I not unto you, saying: Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore also, behold, his blood is required.'
23.
וְהֵם לֹא יָדְעוּ, כִּי שֹׁמֵעַ יוֹסֵף: כִּי הַמֵּלִיץ, בֵּינֹתָם.
vehem lo yada'u, ki shome'a Yosef: ki hammelitz, benotam.
And they knew not that Joseph understood them; for the interpreter was between them.
24.
וַיִּסֹּב מֵעֲלֵיהֶם, וַיֵּבְךְּ; וַיָּשָׁב אֲלֵהֶם, וַיְדַבֵּר אֲלֵהֶם, וַיִּקַּח מֵאִתָּם אֶת-שִׁמְעוֹן, וַיֶּאֱסֹר אֹתוֹ לְעֵינֵיהֶם.
vayissov me'alehem, vayevk; vayashav alehem, vayedaber alehem, vayikkach me'ittam et-shim'on, vaye'esor oto le'einehem.
And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and he returned to them, and spoke to them, and took Simeon from among them, and bound him before their eyes.
25.
וַיְצַו יוֹסֵף, וַיְמַלְאוּ אֶת-כְּלֵיהֶם בָּר, וּלְהָשִׁיב כַּסְפֵּיהֶם אִישׁ אֶל-שַׂקּוֹ, וְלָתֵת לָהֶם צֵדָה לַדָּרֶךְ; וַיַּעַשׂ לָהֶם, כֵּן.
vaytzav Yosef, vaymalle'u et kelêhem bar, ulehashiv kaspehem ish el sakko, velatet lahem tzedah laderakh; vaya'as lahem, ken.
Then Joseph commanded to fill their vessels with corn, and to restore every man's money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way; and thus was it done unto them.
26.
וַיִּשְׂאוּ אֶת-שִׁבְרָם, עַל-חֲמֹרֵיהֶם; וַיֵּלְכוּ, מִשָּׁם.
vayis'u et-shivram, al-khamorehem; vayelekhu, mishsham.
And they laded their asses with their corn, and departed thence.
27.
וַיִּפְתַּח הָאֶחָד אֶת-שַׂקּוֹ, לָתֵת מִסְפּוֹא לַחֲמֹרוֹ--בַּמָּלוֹן; וַיַּרְא, אֶת-כַּסְפּוֹ, וְהִנֵּה-הוּא, בְּפִי אַמְתַּחְתּוֹ.
vayiftakh ha'ekhad et-sakko, latet mispo lakhamoro--bammalon; vayyar, et-kaspo, vehinneh-hu, befi amtakhto.
And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the lodging-place, he espied his money; and, behold, it was in the mouth of his sack.
28.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל-אֶחָיו הוּשַׁב כַּסְפִּי, וְגַם הִנֵּה בְאַמְתַּחְתִּי; וַיֵּצֵא לִבָּם, וַיֶּחֶרְדוּ אִישׁ אֶל-אָחִיו לֵאמֹר, מַה-זֹּאת עָשָׂה אֱלֹהִים, לָנוּ.
Vayomer el-akhayv hushav kaspi, vegam hinneh ve'amtachti; vayetze libbam, vayekherdu ish el-akhiv lemor, mah-zot ashah Elohim, lanu.
And he said unto his brethren: 'My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my sack.' And their heart failed them, and they turned trembling one to another, saying: 'What is this that God hath done unto us?'
29.
וַיָּבֹאוּ אֶל-יַעֲקֹב אֲבִיהֶם, אַרְצָה כְּנָעַן; וַיַּגִּידוּ לוֹ, אֵת כָּל-הַקֹּרֹת אֹתָם לֵאמֹר.
vayavo'u el Ya'akov avikhem, artza Kena'an; vayyagidu lo, et kol-hakkorot otam lemor.
And they came unto Jacob their father unto the land of Canaan, and told him all that had befallen them, saying:
30.
דִּבֶּר הָאִישׁ אֲדֹנֵי הָאָרֶץ, אִתָּנוּ--קָשׁוֹת; וַיִּתֵּן אֹתָנוּ, כִּמְרַגְּלִים אֶת-הָאָרֶץ.
dibber ha'ish adoney ha'aretz, ittanu--qashot; vayitten otanu, kimraggelim et-ha'aretz.
'The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly with us, and took us for spies of the country.
31.
וַנֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו, כֵּנִים אֲנָחְנוּ: לֹא הָיִינוּ, מְרַגְּלִים.
vanno'mer elav kenim anakhnu lo hayinu meraggelim.
And we said unto him: We are upright men; we are no spies.
32.
שְׁנֵים-עָשָׂר אֲנַחְנוּ אַחִים, בְּנֵי אָבִינוּ; הָאֶחָד אֵינֶנּוּ, וְהַקָּטֹן הַיּוֹם אֶת-אָבִינוּ בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן.
shneim-asar anachnu achim, benei avinu; ha'echad einennu, vehaqaton hayom et-avinu be'eretz kena'an.
We are twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.
33.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלֵינוּ, הָאִישׁ אֲדֹנֵי הָאָרֶץ, בְּזֹאת אֵדַע, כִּי כֵנִים אַתֶּם: אֲחִיכֶם הָאֶחָד הַנִּיחוּ אִתִּי, וְאֶת-רַעֲבוֹן בָּתֵּיכֶם קְחוּ וָלֵכוּ.
vayomer elenu, ha'ish adoney ha'aretz, bezot eda, ki khenim attem: achikhem ha'echad hannichu itti, ve'et-ra'avon battekhem qechu valechu.
And the man, the lord of the land, said unto us: Hereby shall I know that ye are upright men: leave one of your brethren with me, and take corn for the famine of your houses, and go your way.
34.
וְהָבִיאוּ אֶת-אֲחִיכֶם הַקָּטֹן, אֵלַי, וְאֵדְעָה כִּי לֹא מְרַגְּלִים אַתֶּם, כִּי כֵנִים אַתֶּם; אֶת-אֲחִיכֶם אֶתֵּן לָכֶם, וְאֶת-הָאָרֶץ תִּסְחָרוּ.
ve'havi'u et-akhyikhem haqqaton, elay, ve'ed'ah ki lo meraggelim attem, ki khenim attem; et-akhyikhem etten lakhem, ve'et-ha'aretz tischaru.
And bring your youngest brother unto me; then shall I know that ye are no spies, but that ye are upright men; so will I deliver you your brother, and ye shall traffic in the land.'
35.
וַיְהִי, הֵם מְרִיקִים שַׂקֵּיהֶם, וְהִנֵּה-אִישׁ צְרוֹר-כַּסְפּוֹ, בְּשַׂקּוֹ; וַיִּרְאוּ אֶת-צְרֹרוֹת כַּסְפֵּיהֶם, הֵמָּה וַאֲבִיהֶם--וַיִּירָאוּ.
vayhi, hem meriqim saqeihem, vehinneh-ish tzeror-kaspo, besaqqo; vayiru et-tzerorot kaspeihem, hemmah va'avihem--vayirau.
And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack; and when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid.
36.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם יַעֲקֹב אֲבִיהֶם, אֹתִי שִׁכַּלְתֶּם: יוֹסֵף אֵינֶנּוּ, וְשִׁמְעוֹן אֵינֶנּוּ, וְאֶת-בִּנְיָמִן תִּקָּחוּ, עָלַי הָיוּ כֻלָּנָה.
Vayomer alehem Ya'akov avihem, oti shikkaltem: Yosef einennu, veShim'on einennu, ve'et-Binyamin tikkahu, alay hayu khullanah.
And Jacob their father said unto them: 'Me have ye bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away; upon me are all these things come.'
37.
וַיֹּאמֶר רְאוּבֵן, אֶל-אָבִיו לֵאמֹר, אֶת-שְׁנֵי בָנַי תָּמִית, אִם-לֹא אֲבִיאֶנּוּ אֵלֶיךָ; תְּנָה אֹתוֹ עַל-יָדִי, וַאֲנִי אֲשִׁיבֶנּוּ אֵלֶיךָ.
vayomer Re'uven, el-aviv lemor, et-shenai banay tamit, im-lo avi'ennu eleykha; tenah oto al-yadi, va'ani ashivennu eleykha.
And Reuben spoke unto his father, saying: 'Thou shalt slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee; deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him back to thee.'
38.
וַיֹּאמֶר, לֹא-יֵרֵד בְּנִי עִמָּכֶם: כִּי-אָחִיו מֵת וְהוּא לְבַדּוֹ נִשְׁאָר, וּקְרָאָהוּ אָסוֹן בַּדֶּרֶךְ אֲשֶׁר תֵּלְכוּ-בָהּ, וְהוֹרַדְתֶּם אֶת-שֵׂיבָתִי בְּיָגוֹן, שְׁאוֹלָה.
vayomer, lo-yered beni immakhem: ki-akhi ve-hu levado nishar, uqra'ahu ason badderek asher telkhu-vah, vehoradtem et-sevati beyagon, she'olah.
And he said: 'My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he only is left; if harm befall him by the way in which ye go, then will ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
