1.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים אֶל-יַעֲקֹב, קוּם עֲלֵה בֵית-אֵל וְשֶׁב-שָׁם; וַעֲשֵׂה-שָׁם מִזְבֵּחַ--לָאֵל הַנִּרְאֶה אֵלֶיךָ, בְּבָרְחֲךָ מִפְּנֵי עֵשָׂו אָחִיךָ.
vayomer Elohim el-Ya'akov, kum aleh beit-el veshev-sham; va'aseh-sham mizbe'ah--la'el hannir'eh eleikha, bevarkhakha mipenei Esav ahikha.
And God said unto Jacob: 'Arise, go up to Beth-el, and dwell there; and make there an altar unto God, who appeared unto thee when thou didst flee from the face of Esau thy brother.'
2.
וַיֹּאמֶר יַעֲקֹב אֶל-בֵּיתוֹ, וְאֶל כָּל-אֲשֶׁר עִמּוֹ: הָסִרוּ אֶת-אֱלֹהֵי הַנֵּכָר, אֲשֶׁר בְּתֹכְכֶם, וְהִטַּהֲרוּ, וְהַחֲלִיפוּ שִׂמְלֹתֵיכֶם.
vayomer Ya'akov el-beito, ve'el kol-asher immo: hasiru et-elohei hannekar, asher betokhekhem, vehittaharu, vehakhalifu simloteikhem.
Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him: 'Put away the strange gods that are among you, and purify yourselves, and change your garments;

וְנָקוּמָה וְנַעֲלֶה, בֵּית-אֵל; וְאֶעֱשֶׂה-שָּׁם מִזְבֵּחַ, לָאֵל הָעֹנֶה אֹתִי בְּיוֹם צָרָתִי, וַיְהִי עִמָּדִי, בַּדֶּרֶךְ אֲשֶׁר הָלָכְתִּי.
venaqumah vena'aleh, bet-el; ve'e'eseh-sham mizbe'akh, la'el ha'oneh oti beyom tzarati, vayehi immadi, badderekh asher halakhti.
and let us arise, and go up to Beth-el; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went.'
4.
וַיִּתְּנוּ אֶל-יַעֲקֹב, אֵת כָּל-אֱלֹהֵי הַנֵּכָר אֲשֶׁר בְּיָדָם, וְאֶת-הַנְּזָמִים, אֲשֶׁר בְּאָזְנֵיהֶם; וַיִּטְמֹן אֹתָם יַעֲקֹב, תַּחַת הָאֵלָה אֲשֶׁר עִם-שְׁכֶם.
vayittenu el-Ya'akov, et kol-elohei hannekar asher beyadam, ve'et-hannezamim, asher be'oznehem; vayitmton otam Ya'akov, takhat ha'elah asher im-Shekhem.
And they gave unto Jacob all the foreign gods which were in their hand, and the rings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the terebinth which was by Shechem.
5.
וַיִּסָּעוּ; וַיְהִי חִתַּת אֱלֹהִים, עַל-הֶעָרִים אֲשֶׁר סְבִיבוֹתֵיהֶם, וְלֹא רָדְפוּ, אַחֲרֵי בְּנֵי יַעֲקֹב.
vayissa'u; vayhi khittat Elohim, al-he'arim asher sevivotehem, velo radfu, akharei bnei Ya'akov.
And they journeyed; and a terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.
6.
וַיָּבֹא יַעֲקֹב לוּזָה, אֲשֶׁר בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנַעַן--הִוא, בֵּית-אֵל: הוּא, וְכָל-הָעָם אֲשֶׁר-עִמּוֹ.
vayavo Ya'akov Luzah, asher be'eretz Kena'an--hi, Bet-El: hu, ve'chol-ha'am asher-immo.
So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan--the same is Beth-el--he and all the people that were with him.
7.
וַיִּבֶן שָׁם, מִזְבֵּחַ, וַיִּקְרָא לַמָּקוֹם, אֵל בֵּית-אֵל: כִּי שָׁם, נִגְלוּ אֵלָיו הָאֱלֹהִים, בְּבָרְחוֹ, מִפְּנֵי אָחִיו.
vayiven sham, mizbe'ah, vayiqra lammaqom, El Bet-El: ki sham, niglu elav haElohim, bevarkho, mippenei ahiv.
And he built there an altar, and called the place El-beth-el, because there God was revealed unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother.
8.
וַתָּמָת דְּבֹרָה מֵינֶקֶת רִבְקָה, וַתִּקָּבֵר מִתַּחַת לְבֵית-אֵל תַּחַת הָאַלּוֹן; וַיִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ, אַלּוֹן בָּכוּת.
vattamat devorah meyeneket Rivkah, vattikaver mittachat leveit-el tachat ha'allon; vayikra shemo, allon bachut.
And Deborah Rebekah's nurse died, and she was buried below Beth-el under the oak; and the name of it was called Allon-bacuth.
9.
וַיֵּרָא אֱלֹהִים אֶל-יַעֲקֹב עוֹד, בְּבֹאוֹ מִפַּדַּן אֲרָם; וַיְבָרֶךְ, אֹתוֹ.
vayyera Elohim el Ya'akov od, bevodo mippadan Aram; vayeven, oto.
And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came from Paddan-aram, and blessed him.
10.
וַיֹּאמֶר-לוֹ אֱלֹהִים, שִׁמְךָ יַעֲקֹב: לֹא-יִקָּרֵא שִׁמְךָ עוֹד יַעֲקֹב, כִּי אִם-יִשְׂרָאֵל יִהְיֶה שְׁמֶךָ, וַיִּקְרָא אֶת-שְׁמוֹ, יִשְׂרָאֵל.
Vayomer-lo Elohim, shimkha Ya'akov: lo-yikare shimkha od Ya'akov, ki im-Yisrael yihyeh shemekha, vayikra et-shemo, Yisrael.
And God said unto him: 'Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name'; and He called his name Israel.
11.
וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ אֱלֹהִים אֲנִי אֵל שַׁדַּי, פְּרֵה וּרְבֵה--גּוֹי וּקְהַל גּוֹיִם, יִהְיֶה מִמֶּךָּ; וּמְלָכִים, מֵחֲלָצֶיךָ יֵצֵאוּ.
vayomer lo Elohim ani El Shaddai, pere u'reveh--goy u'kehal goyim, yihyeh mimeka; u'melakhim, mehalatsykha yetze'u.
And God said unto him: 'I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;
12.
וְאֶת-הָאָרֶץ, אֲשֶׁר נָתַתִּי לְאַבְרָהָם וּלְיִצְחָק--לְךָ אֶתְּנֶנָּה; וּלְזַרְעֲךָ אַחֲרֶיךָ, אֶתֵּן אֶת-הָאָרֶץ.
ve'et-ha'aretz, asher natatti le'Avraham uleYitzchak--lekha ettenennah; ulezar'akha acharekha, etten et-ha'aretz.
and the land which I gave unto Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.'
13.
וַיַּעַל מֵעָלָיו, אֱלֹהִים, בַּמָּקוֹם, אֲשֶׁר-דִּבֶּר אִתּוֹ.
vay'al me'alav, Elohim, bammaqom, asher-dibber itto.
And God went up from him in the place where He spoke with him.
14.
וַיַּצֵּב יַעֲקֹב מַצֵּבָה, בַּמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר-דִּבֶּר אִתּוֹ--מַצֶּבֶת אָבֶן; וַיַּסֵּךְ עָלֶיהָ נֶסֶךְ, וַיִּצֹק עָלֶיהָ שָׁמֶן.
vayatzev Ya'akov matzevah, bammakom asher-diber itto--matzevet aven; vayassek aleha nesek, vayitzok aleha shamen.
And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He spoke with him, a pillar of stone, and he poured out a drink-offering thereon, and poured oil thereon.
15.
וַיִּקְרָא יַעֲקֹב אֶת-שֵׁם הַמָּקוֹם, אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר אִתּוֹ שָׁם אֱלֹהִים--בֵּית-אֵל.
vayikra Ya'akov et-shem hammakom, asher dibber itto sham Elohim--bet-El.
And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Beth-el.
16.
וַיִּסְעוּ מִבֵּית אֵל, וַיְהִי-עוֹד כִּבְרַת-הָאָרֶץ לָבוֹא אֶפְרָתָה; וַתֵּלֶד רָחֵל, וַתְּקַשׁ בְּלִדְתָּהּ.
vayis'u mibe'et el, vayhi-od kivrat-ha'aretz lavo efratah; vateled Rachel, vateqash belidtah.
And they journeyed from Beth-el; and there was still some way to come to Ephrath; and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour.
17.
וַיְהִי בְהַקְשֹׁתָהּ, בְּלִדְתָּהּ; וַתֹּאמֶר לָהּ הַמְיַלֶּדֶת אַל-תִּירְאִי, כִּי-גַם-זֶה לָךְ בֵּן.
vayhi vehakshotah, belidtah; vatto'mer lah hamyeledet al-tir'i, ki-gam-zeh lakh ben.
And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the mid-wife said unto her: 'Fear not; for this also is a son for thee.'
18.
וַיְהִי בְּצֵאת נַפְשָׁהּ, כִּי מֵתָה, וַתִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ, בֶּן-אוֹנִי; וְאָבִיו, קָרָא-לוֹ בִנְיָמִין.
vayhi betze't nafshah, ki metah, vattikra shmo, ben-oni; ve'aviv, kara-lo vinyamin.
And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing--for she died--that she called his name Ben-oni; but his father called him Benjamin.
19.
וַתָּמָת, רָחֵל; וַתִּקָּבֵר בְּדֶרֶךְ אֶפְרָתָה, הִוא בֵּית לָחֶם.
vattamat Rakhel; vattikaver bederekh Efratah, hi beit lakhem.
And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath--the same is Beth-lehem.
20.
וַיַּצֵּב יַעֲקֹב מַצֵּבָה, עַל-קְבֻרָתָהּ--הִוא מַצֶּבֶת קְבֻרַת-רָחֵל, עַד-הַיּוֹם.
vayattzev Ya'akov matzevah, 'al-kevuratah--hi matzevet kevurat-Rakhel, 'ad-hayyom.
And Jacob set up a pillar upon her grave; the same is the pillar of Rachel's grave unto this day.
21.
וַיִּסַּע, יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיֵּט אָהֳלֹה, מֵהָלְאָה לְמִגְדַּל-עֵדֶר.
vayissa Yisrael veyet oholo, mehalah lemigdal-eder.
And Israel journeyed, and spread his tent beyond Migdal-eder.
22.
וַיְהִי, בִּשְׁכֹּן יִשְׂרָאֵל בָּאָרֶץ הַהִוא, וַיֵּלֶךְ רְאוּבֵן וַיִּשְׁכַּב אֶת-בִּלְהָה פִּילֶגֶשׁ אָבִיו, וַיִּשְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיִּהְיוּ בְנֵי-יַעֲקֹב, שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר.
vayhi, bishkon Yisrael ba'aretz hahi, vayelekh Re'uven vayishkav et-Bilhah pilegesh aviv, vayishma Yisrael; vayhiyu venei-Ya'akov, shneim asar.
And it came to pass, while Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine; and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:
23.
בְּנֵי לֵאָה, בְּכוֹר יַעֲקֹב רְאוּבֵן; וְשִׁמְעוֹן וְלֵוִי וִיהוּדָה, וְיִשָּׂשכָר וּזְבֻלוּן.
Benei Le'ah, bekhor Ya'akov Re'uven; veshim'on velevi vihudah, veyissaskhar uzevulun.
the sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob's first-born, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun;
24.
בְּנֵי רָחֵל, יוֹסֵף וּבִנְיָמִן.
bene Rachel, Yosef uVinyamin.
the sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin;
25.
וּבְנֵי בִלְהָה שִׁפְחַת רָחֵל, דָּן וְנַפְתָּלִי.
uvnei vilhah shifhat Rachel, dan venaftali.
and the sons of Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid: Dan and Naphtali;
26.
וּבְנֵי זִלְפָּה שִׁפְחַת לֵאָה, גָּד וְאָשֵׁר; אֵלֶּה בְּנֵי יַעֲקֹב, אֲשֶׁר יֻלַּד-לוֹ בְּפַדַּן אֲרָם.
uvnei zilpah shifchat Le'ah, Gad ve'Asher; elleh bnei Ya'akov, asher yullad-lo beFaddan Aram.
and the sons of Zilpah, Leah's handmaid: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob, that were born to him in Paddan-aram.
27.
וַיָּבֹא יַעֲקֹב אֶל-יִצְחָק אָבִיו, מַמְרֵא קִרְיַת הָאַרְבַּע--הִוא חֶבְרוֹן, אֲשֶׁר-גָּר-שָׁם אַבְרָהָם וְיִצְחָק.
vayavo Ya'akov el-Yitzchak aviv, mamre Kiryat ha'arba--hiv khebron, asher-gar-sham Avraham veYitzchak.
And Jacob came unto Isaac his father to Mamre, to Kiriatharba--the same is Hebron--where Abraham and Isaac sojourned.
28.
וַיִּהְיוּ, יְמֵי יִצְחָק--מְאַת שָׁנָה, וּשְׁמֹנִים שָׁנָה.
Vayihyu, yeme Yitzchak--me'at shanah, ushmonim shanah.
And the days of Isaac were a hundred and fourscore years.
29.
וַיִּגְוַע יִצְחָק וַיָּמָת וַיֵּאָסֶף אֶל-עַמָּיו, זָקֵן וּשְׂבַע יָמִים; וַיִּקְבְּרוּ אֹתוֹ, עֵשָׂו וְיַעֲקֹב בָּנָיו.
vayigva Yitzchak vayamat vay'asef el-amav, zaken ushva yamim; vayikv'ru oto, Esav v'Ya'akov banav.
And Isaac expired, and died, and was gathered unto his people, old and full of days; and Esau and Jacob his sons buried him.
