1.
וְשָׂרַי אֵשֶׁת אַבְרָם, לֹא יָלְדָה לוֹ; וְלָהּ שִׁפְחָה מִצְרִית, וּשְׁמָהּ הָגָר.
ve'sarai eshet avram, lo yalda lo; vela shifkha mitsrit, ushma hagar.
Now Sarai Abram's wife bore him no children; and she had a handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.
2.
וַתֹּאמֶר שָׂרַי אֶל-אַבְרָם, הִנֵּה-נָא עֲצָרַנִי יְהוָה מִלֶּדֶת--בֹּא-נָא אֶל-שִׁפְחָתִי, אוּלַי אִבָּנֶה מִמֶּנָּה; וַיִּשְׁמַע אַבְרָם, לְקוֹל שָׂרָי.
vatto'mer saray el-avram, hinneh-na atzarani YHWH milledet--bo-na el-shifchati, ulay ibaneh mimmennah; vayyishma avram, leqol saray.
And Sarai said unto Abram: 'Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing; go in, I pray thee, unto my handmaid; it may be that I shall be builded up through her.' And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.

וַתִּקַּח שָׂרַי אֵשֶׁת-אַבְרָם, אֶת-הָגָר הַמִּצְרִית שִׁפְחָתָהּ, מִקֵּץ עֶשֶׂר שָׁנִים, לְשֶׁבֶת אַבְרָם בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן; וַתִּתֵּן אֹתָהּ לְאַבְרָם אִישָׁהּ, לוֹ לְאִשָּׁה.
vattikkach sarai eshet-avram, et-hagar hammitzrit shifchatah, mikeitz eser shanim, leshevet avram be'eretz kena'an; vattitten otah le'avram ishah, lo le'ishah.
And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife.

וַיָּבֹא אֶל-הָגָר, וַתַּהַר; וַתֵּרֶא כִּי הָרָתָה, וַתֵּקַל גְּבִרְתָּהּ בְּעֵינֶיהָ.
vayavo el-hagar vatahar vateral ki haratah vatekal gevirtah be'eineha
And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

וַתֹּאמֶר שָׂרַי אֶל-אַבְרָם, חֲמָסִי עָלֶיךָ--אָנֹכִי נָתַתִּי שִׁפְחָתִי בְּחֵיקֶךָ, וַתֵּרֶא כִּי הָרָתָה וָאֵקַל בְּעֵינֶיהָ; יִשְׁפֹּט יְהוָה, בֵּינִי וּבֵינֶיךָ.
vatomar saray el-avram, khamasi ‘aleykha—anokhi natatti shifhati ve'kheykeykha, vateresh ki harata va'ekal be'eyneya; yishpot YHWH, beyni uveynekha.
And Sarai said unto Abram: 'My wrong be upon thee: I gave my handmaid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.'
6.
וַיֹּאמֶר אַבְרָם אֶל-שָׂרַי, הִנֵּה שִׁפְחָתֵךְ בְּיָדֵךְ--עֲשִׂי-לָהּ, הַטּוֹב בְּעֵינָיִךְ; וַתְּעַנֶּהָ שָׂרַי, וַתִּבְרַח מִפָּנֶיהָ.
vayomer Avram el-Saray, hine shifchatech beyadecha--asi-lah, hatov be'einayich; vate'aneha Saray, vativrach mipaneha.
But Abram said unto Sarai: 'Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her that which is good in thine eyes.' And Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her face.
7.
וַיִּמְצָאָהּ מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה, עַל-עֵין הַמַּיִם--בַּמִּדְבָּר: עַל-הָעַיִן, בְּדֶרֶךְ שׁוּר.
vayımtza'ah mal'akh YHWH, al-ein hamayim--bamidbar: al-ha'ayin, bederekh Shur.
And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.
8.
וַיֹּאמַר, הָגָר שִׁפְחַת שָׂרַי אֵי-מִזֶּה בָאת--וְאָנָה תֵלֵכִי; וַתֹּאמֶר--מִפְּנֵי שָׂרַי גְּבִרְתִּי, אָנֹכִי בֹּרַחַת.
Vayomer, Hagar shifchat Saray ei-mizeh va'at ve'anah telechi; vatomer mipnei Saray gevirti, anochi borachat.
And he said: 'Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, whence camest thou? and whither goest thou?' And she said: 'I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.'
9.
וַיֹּאמֶר לָהּ מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה, שׁוּבִי אֶל-גְּבִרְתֵּךְ, וְהִתְעַנִּי, תַּחַת יָדֶיהָ.
Vayomer lah mal'ach YHWH, shuvi el-gevertek, vehit'ani, tachat yadeha.
And the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.'
10.
וַיֹּאמֶר לָהּ מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה, הַרְבָּה אַרְבֶּה אֶת-זַרְעֵךְ, וְלֹא יִסָּפֵר, מֵרֹב.
vayomer lah mal'akh YHWH, harbakh arbeh et-zar'ekh, velo yisaper, merov.
And the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'I will greatly multiply thy seed, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.
11.
וַיֹּאמֶר לָהּ מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה, הִנָּךְ הָרָה וְיֹלַדְתְּ בֵּן, וְקָרָאת שְׁמוֹ יִשְׁמָעֵאל, כִּי-שָׁמַע יְהוָה אֶל-עָנְיֵךְ.
vayomer lah mal'akh YHWH, hinnakh harah veyolat ben, veqarat shemo Yishma'el, ki-shama YHWH el-'anyekh.
And the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son; and thou shalt call his name Ishmael, because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.
12.
וְהוּא יִהְיֶה, פֶּרֶא אָדָם--יָדוֹ בַכֹּל, וְיַד כֹּל בּוֹ; וְעַל-פְּנֵי כָל-אֶחָיו, יִשְׁכֹּן.
ve'hu yihyeh, pere adam--yado vakol, veyad kol bo; ve'al-penei khol-echav, yishkon.
And he shall be a wild ass of a man: his hand shall be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the face of all his brethren.'
13.
וַתִּקְרָא שֵׁם-יְהוָה הַדֹּבֵר אֵלֶיהָ, אַתָּה אֵל רֳאִי: כִּי אָמְרָה, הֲגַם הֲלֹם רָאִיתִי--אַחֲרֵי רֹאִי.
vattiqra shem-YHWH hadover eleha, ata el ro'i: ki amrah, hagam halom ra'iti--aharei ro'i.
And she called the name of the LORD that spoke unto her, Thou art a God of seeing; for she said: 'Have I even here seen Him that seeth Me?'
14.
עַל-כֵּן קָרָא לַבְּאֵר, בְּאֵר לַחַי רֹאִי--הִנֵּה בֵין-קָדֵשׁ, וּבֵין בָּרֶד.
al-ken kara labe'er, be'er lachay ro'i--hinneh bein-kadesh, uvein bared.
Wherefore the well was called 'Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
15.
וַתֵּלֶד הָגָר לְאַבְרָם, בֵּן; וַיִּקְרָא אַבְרָם שֶׁם-בְּנוֹ אֲשֶׁר-יָלְדָה הָגָר, יִשְׁמָעֵאל.
vatteled hagar le'avram ben vayyiqra avram shem beno asher yaldah hagar yishma'el
And Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
16.
וְאַבְרָם, בֶּן-שְׁמֹנִים שָׁנָה וְשֵׁשׁ שָׁנִים, בְּלֶדֶת-הָגָר אֶת-יִשְׁמָעֵאל, לְאַבְרָם.
ve'Avram, ben-shmonim shanah ve'shesh shanim, be'ledet-Hagar et-Yishmael, le'Avram.
And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
