וַיְהִי דְבַר-יְהוָה, אֵלַי לֵאמֹר.
vayhi devar-YHWH, elay lemor.
And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying:
2.
בֶּן-אָדָם, מַה-יִּהְיֶה עֵץ-הַגֶּפֶן מִכָּל-עֵץ--הַזְּמוֹרָה, אֲשֶׁר הָיָה בַּעֲצֵי הַיָּעַר.
ben-adam, mah-yihyeh etz-hagefen mikol-etz--hazzmorah, asher hayah ba'atzei hayaar.
'Son of man, what is the vine-tree more than any tree, the vine branch which grew up among the trees of the forest?

הֲיֻקַּח מִמֶּנּוּ עֵץ, לַעֲשׂוֹת לִמְלָאכָה; אִם-יִקְחוּ מִמֶּנּוּ יָתֵד, לִתְלוֹת עָלָיו כָּל-כֶּלִי.
hayukakh mimenu etz, la'asot limlakhah; im-yikhu mimenu yated, litlot alayw kol-keli.
Shall wood be taken thereof to make any work? or will men take a pin of it to hang any vessel thereon?

הִנֵּה לָאֵשׁ, נִתַּן לְאָכְלָה: אֵת שְׁנֵי קְצוֹתָיו אָכְלָה הָאֵשׁ, וְתוֹכוֹ נָחָר--הֲיִצְלַח, לִמְלָאכָה.
hinneh la'esh, nitan le'akhlah: et shnei ktzotav akhlah ha'esh, vetokho nakhar--hayitzlakh, limlakhah.
Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel; the fire hath devoured both the ends of it, and the midst of it is singed; is it profitable for any work?

הִנֵּה בִּהְיוֹתוֹ תָמִים, לֹא יֵעָשֶׂה לִמְלָאכָה: אַף כִּי-אֵשׁ אֲכָלַתְהוּ וַיֵּחָר, וְנַעֲשָׂה עוֹד לִמְלָאכָה.
hineh bihyoto tamim, lo ye'aseh limlakhah: af ki-esh akhalat'hu vayyechar, vena'asah od limlakhah.
Behold, when it was whole, it was meet for no work; how much less, when the fire hath devoured it, and it is singed, shall it yet be meet for any work?

לָכֵן, כֹּה אָמַר אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה, כַּאֲשֶׁר עֵץ-הַגֶּפֶן בְּעֵץ הַיַּעַר, אֲשֶׁר-נְתַתִּיו לָאֵשׁ לְאָכְלָה--כֵּן נָתַתִּי, אֶת-יֹשְׁבֵי יְרוּשָׁלִָם.
lakhen, koh amar Adonai YHWH, ka'asher ets-hagefen be'ets hayya'ar, asher-netattiv la'esh le'akh-lah--ken natatti, et-yoshvei Yerushalayim.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD: As the vine-tree among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so do I give the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
7.
וְנָתַתִּי אֶת-פָּנַי, בָּהֶם--מֵהָאֵשׁ יָצָאוּ, וְהָאֵשׁ תֹּאכְלֵם; וִידַעְתֶּם כִּי-אֲנִי יְהוָה, בְּשׂוּמִי אֶת-פָּנַי בָּהֶם.
venatatti et-panay, bahem--meha'esh yats'u, vha'esh tokhelem; vida'atem ki-ani YHWH, besumi et-panay bahem.
And I will set My face against them; out of the fire are they come forth, and the fire shall devour them; and ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I set My face against them.
8.
וְנָתַתִּי אֶת-הָאָרֶץ, שְׁמָמָה--יַעַן מָעֲלוּ מַעַל, נְאֻם אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה.
venatatti et-ha'aretz, shemamah--ya'an ma'elu ma'al, ne'um Adonai YHWH.
And I will make the land desolate, because they have acted treacherously, saith the Lord GOD.'
