1.
וַיָּבוֹא אֵלַי אֲנָשִׁים, מִזִּקְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיֵּשְׁבוּ, לְפָנָי.
vayavo elay anashim, miziqnei Yisrael; vayeshevu, lefanay.
Then came certain of the elders of Israel unto me, and sat before me.

וַיְהִי דְבַר-יְהוָה, אֵלַי לֵאמֹר.
vayhi devar-YHWH, elay lemor.
And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying:

בֶּן-אָדָם, הָאֲנָשִׁים הָאֵלֶּה הֶעֱלוּ גִלּוּלֵיהֶם עַל-לִבָּם, וּמִכְשׁוֹל עֲוֺנָם, נָתְנוּ נֹכַח פְּנֵיהֶם: הַאִדָּרֹשׁ אִדָּרֵשׁ, לָהֶם.
ben-adam, ha'anashim ha'eleh he'elu gilulehem al-libam, umikhshol avonam, natnu nokhakh penehem: ha'idarosh idaresh, lahem.
'Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their mind, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face; should I be inquired of at all by them?
4.
לָכֵן דַּבֵּר-אוֹתָם וְאָמַרְתָּ אֲלֵיהֶם כֹּה-אָמַר אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה, אִישׁ אִישׁ מִבֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲשֶׁר יַעֲלֶה אֶת-גִּלּוּלָיו אֶל-לִבּוֹ וּמִכְשׁוֹל עֲוֺנוֹ יָשִׂים נֹכַח פָּנָיו, וּבָא, אֶל-הַנָּבִיא: אֲנִי יְהוָה, נַעֲנֵיתִי לוֹ בה בָא--בְּרֹב גִּלּוּלָיו.
lakhen dabber-otam ve'amarta alehem koh-amar Adonai YHWH, ish ish mibeit Yisrael asher ya'aleh et-gillulav el-libbo umikhshol avono yasim nokhakh panav, uva, el-hanavi: ani YHWH, na'aneiti lo ba ba--berov gillulav.
Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them: Thus saith the Lord GOD: Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his mind, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet--I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols;

לְמַעַן תְּפֹשׂ אֶת-בֵּית-יִשְׂרָאֵל, בְּלִבָּם, אֲשֶׁר נָזֹרוּ מֵעָלַי, בְּגִלּוּלֵיהֶם כֻּלָּם.
lema'an tepos et-beit-Yisrael, belibbam, asher nazoru me'alay, begilluleihem kullam.
that I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all turned away from Me through their idols.
6.
לָכֵן אֱמֹר אֶל-בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל, כֹּה אָמַר אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה, שׁוּבוּ וְהָשִׁיבוּ, מֵעַל גִּלּוּלֵיכֶם; וּמֵעַל כָּל-תּוֹעֲבֹתֵיכֶם, הָשִׁיבוּ פְנֵיכֶם.
lakhen emor el-beit Yisrael, koh amar Adonai YHWH, shuvu vehashivu, me'al gilluleikhem; umeal kol-to'avoteikhem, hashivu peneikhem.
Therefore say unto the house of Israel: Thus saith the Lord GOD: Return ye, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.
7.
כִּי אִישׁ אִישׁ מִבֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל, וּמֵהַגֵּר אֲשֶׁר-יָגוּר בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, וְיִנָּזֵר מֵאַחֲרַי וְיַעַל גִּלּוּלָיו אֶל-לִבּוֹ, וּמִכְשׁוֹל עֲוֺנוֹ יָשִׂים נֹכַח פָּנָיו; וּבָא אֶל-הַנָּבִיא, לִדְרָשׁ-לוֹ בִי--אֲנִי יְהוָה, נַעֲנֶה-לּוֹ בִּי.
ki ish ish mibeit Yisrael, umehager asher-yagur beyisrael, veyinnazer me'akharay veya'al gillulav el-libbo, umikhshol avono yasim nokhakh panav; uva el-hanavi, lidrash-lo vi--ani YHWH, na'aneh-lo bi.
For every one of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel, that separateth himself from Me, and taketh his idols into his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet, that he inquire for him of Me--I the LORD will answer him by Myself,
8.
וְנָתַתִּי פָנַי בָּאִישׁ הַהוּא, וַהֲשִׂמֹתִיהוּ לְאוֹת וְלִמְשָׁלִים, וְהִכְרַתִּיו, מִתּוֹךְ עַמִּי; וִידַעְתֶּם, כִּי-אֲנִי יְהוָה.
ve'natati fanay ba'ish hahu, vahasimotihu le'ot velimshalim, vehikhartiv, mitokh 'ami; vida'etem, ki-ani YHWH.
and I will set My face against that man, and will make him a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of My people; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
9.
וְהַנָּבִיא כִי-יְפֻתֶּה, וְדִבֶּר דָּבָר--אֲנִי יְהוָה פִּתֵּיתִי, אֵת הַנָּבִיא הַהוּא; וְנָטִיתִי אֶת-יָדִי, עָלָיו, וְהִשְׁמַדְתִּיו, מִתּוֹךְ עַמִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל.
vehanavi khi-yefuteh, vediber davar--ani YHWH piteyti, et hanavi hahu; venatiti et-yadi, alay, vehishmadtiv, mitokh 'ami Yisrael.
And when the prophet is enticed and speaketh a word, I the LORD have enticed that prophet, and I will stretch out My hand upon him, and will destroy him from the midst of My people Israel.
10.
וְנָשְׂאוּ, עֲוֺנָם: כַּעֲוֺן, הַדֹּרֵשׁ--כַּעֲוֺן הַנָּבִיא, יִהְיֶה.
venas'u, avonam: ka'avon, hadoresh--ka'avon hanavi, yihyeh.
And they shall bear their iniquity; the iniquity of the prophet shall be even as the iniquity of him that inquireth;
11.
לְמַעַן לֹא-יִתְעוּ עוֹד בֵּית-יִשְׂרָאֵל, מֵאַחֲרַי, וְלֹא-יִטַּמְּאוּ עוֹד, בְּכָל-פִּשְׁעֵיהֶם; וְהָיוּ-לִי לְעָם, וַאֲנִי אֶהְיֶה לָהֶם לֵאלֹהִים--נְאֻם, אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה.
lema'an lo-yit'u od beit-Yisrael, me'aharay, velo-yitam'u od, bekhal-pish'eyhem; vehayu-li le'am, va'ani ehyeh lahem le'Elohim--ne'um, Adonai YHWH.
that the house of Israel may go no more astray from Me, neither defile themselves any more with all their transgressions; but that they may be My people, and I may be their God, saith the Lord GOD.'
12.
וַיְהִי דְבַר-יְהוָה, אֵלַי לֵאמֹר.
vayhi devar-YHWH elay lemor.
And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying:
13.
בֶּן-אָדָם, אֶרֶץ כִּי תֶחֱטָא-לִי לִמְעָל-מַעַל, וְנָטִיתִי יָדִי עָלֶיהָ, וְשָׁבַרְתִּי לָהּ מַטֵּה-לָחֶם; וְהִשְׁלַחְתִּי-בָהּ רָעָב, וְהִכְרַתִּי מִמֶּנָּה אָדָם וּבְהֵמָה.
ben-adam eretz ki tekheta-li lim'al-ma'al venatiti yadi aleha veshavarti lah mateh-lahem vehishlatti-vah ra'av vehikhrati mimenna adam uvehemah.
'Son of man, when a land sinneth against Me by trespassing grievously, and I stretch out My hand upon it, and break the staff of the bread thereof, and send famine upon it, and cut off from it man and beast;
14.
וְהָיוּ שְׁלֹשֶׁת הָאֲנָשִׁים הָאֵלֶּה, בְּתוֹכָהּ--נֹחַ, דנאל דָּנִיֵּאל וְאִיּוֹב: הֵמָּה בְצִדְקָתָם יְנַצְּלוּ נַפְשָׁם, נְאֻם אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה.
vehayu sheloshet ha'anashim ha'eleh betokhah noakh daniyel ve'iyov hemah vetsidqatam yenatslu nafsham ne'um adonai YHWH.
though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord GOD.
15.
לוּ-חַיָּה רָעָה אַעֲבִיר בָּאָרֶץ, וְשִׁכְּלָתָּה; וְהָיְתָה שְׁמָמָה מִבְּלִי עוֹבֵר, מִפְּנֵי הַחַיָּה.
lu-khayah ra'ah a'avir ba'aretz veshikkeltah vehytah shemamah mibli over mipenei hahayah.
If I cause evil beasts to pass through the land, and they bereave it, and it be desolate, so that no man may pass through because of the beasts;
16.
שְׁלֹשֶׁת הָאֲנָשִׁים הָאֵלֶּה, בְּתוֹכָהּ--חַי-אָנִי נְאֻם אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה, אִם-בָּנִים וְאִם-בָּנוֹת יַצִּילוּ: הֵמָּה לְבַדָּם יִנָּצֵלוּ, וְהָאָרֶץ תִּהְיֶה שְׁמָמָה.
sheloshet ha'anashim ha'eleh betokah khay-ani neum Adonai YHWH im-banim ve'im banot yatzilu hemmah levadam yinnatzelu veha'aretz tihyeh shemamah.
though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters; they only shall be delivered, but the land shall be desolate.
17.
אוֹ חֶרֶב אָבִיא, עַל-הָאָרֶץ הַהִיא; וְאָמַרְתִּי, חֶרֶב תַּעֲבֹר בָּאָרֶץ, וְהִכְרַתִּי מִמֶּנָּה, אָדָם וּבְהֵמָה.
o kherev avi al-ha'aretz hahi ve'amarti kherev ta'avor ba'aretz vehikhrati mimennah adam uvehemah.
Or if I bring a sword upon that land, and say: Let the sword go through the land, so that I cut off from it man and beast;
18.
וּשְׁלֹשֶׁת הָאֲנָשִׁים הָאֵלֶּה, בְּתוֹכָהּ--חַי-אָנִי נְאֻם אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה, לֹא יַצִּילוּ בָּנִים וּבָנוֹת: כִּי הֵם לְבַדָּם, יִנָּצֵלוּ.
usheloshet ha'anashim ha'eleh betokah khay-ani neum Adonai YHWH lo yatzilu banim ubanot ki hem levadam yinnatzelu.
though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters, but they only shall be delivered themselves.
19.
אוֹ דֶּבֶר אֲשַׁלַּח, אֶל-הָאָרֶץ הַהִיא; וְשָׁפַכְתִּי חֲמָתִי עָלֶיהָ בְּדָם, לְהַכְרִית מִמֶּנָּה אָדָם וּבְהֵמָה.
o dever ashalakh el-ha'aretz hahi veshafakhti khamati aleha bedavam lehakrit mimennah adam uvehemah.
Or if I send a pestilence into that land, and pour out My fury upon it in blood, to cut off from it man and beast;
20.
וְנֹחַ דנאל דָּנִיֵּאל וְאִיּוֹב, בְּתוֹכָהּ--חַי-אָנִי נְאֻם אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה, אִם-בֵּן אִם-בַּת יַצִּילוּ: הֵמָּה בְצִדְקָתָם, יַצִּילוּ נַפְשָׁם.
venoakh danel dani'el ve'iyov betokhah khay-ani ne'um Adonai YHWH im-ben im-bat yatzilu hemmah vetzidqatam yatzilu nafsham.
though Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness.
21.
כִּי כֹה אָמַר אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה, אַף כִּי-אַרְבַּעַת שְׁפָטַי הָרָעִים חֶרֶב וְרָעָב וְחַיָּה רָעָה וָדֶבֶר, שִׁלַּחְתִּי, אֶל-יְרוּשָׁלִָם--לְהַכְרִית מִמֶּנָּה, אָדָם וּבְהֵמָה.
ki koh amar Adonai YHWH af ki-arba'at shefatay hara'im kherev vera'av vekhayyah ra'ah vadever shillakhti el-Yerushalayim lekhrit mimmennah adam uvehemah.
For thus saith the Lord GOD: How much more when I send My four sore judgments against Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the evil beasts, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast.
22.
וְהִנֵּה נוֹתְרָה-בָּהּ פְּלֵטָה, הַמּוּצָאִים בָּנִים וּבָנוֹת--הִנָּם יוֹצְאִים אֲלֵיכֶם, וּרְאִיתֶם אֶת-דַּרְכָּם וְאֶת-עֲלִילוֹתָם; וְנִחַמְתֶּם, עַל-הָרָעָה אֲשֶׁר הֵבֵאתִי עַל-יְרוּשָׁלִַם--אֵת כָּל-אֲשֶׁר הֵבֵאתִי, עָלֶיהָ.
vehinneh noterah-bah peletah hammoutza'im banim ubanot hinnam yotze'im aleikhem ure'item et-darkam ve'et alilotam venikhamtem al-hara'ah asher heve'ati al-Yerushalayim et kol-asher heve'ati aleiha.
And, behold, though there be left a remnant therein that shall be brought forth, both sons and daughters; behold, when they come forth unto you, and ye see their way and their doings, then ye shall be comforted concerning the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, even concerning all that I have brought upon it;
23.
וְנִחֲמוּ אֶתְכֶם, כִּי-תִרְאוּ אֶת-דַּרְכָּם וְאֶת-עֲלִילוֹתָם; וִידַעְתֶּם, כִּי לֹא חִנָּם עָשִׂיתִי אֵת כָּל-אֲשֶׁר-עָשִׂיתִי בָהּ--נְאֻם, אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה.
venikhamu etkhem ki-tir'u et-darkam ve'et alilotam viyda'tem ki lo khinnam asiti et kol-asher-asiti bah ne'um Adonai YHWH.
and they shall comfort you, when ye see their way and their doings, and ye shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, saith the Lord GOD.'
