1.
וַיֵּלֶךְ אִישׁ, מִבֵּית לֵוִי; וַיִּקַּח, אֶת-בַּת-לֵוִי.
vayelekh ish, mibeit levi; vayikkach, et-bat-levi.
And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi.
2.
וַתַּהַר הָאִשָּׁה, וַתֵּלֶד בֵּן; וַתֵּרֶא אֹתוֹ כִּי-טוֹב הוּא, וַתִּצְפְּנֵהוּ שְׁלֹשָׁה יְרָחִים.
vattahar ha'ishshah, vatteled ben; vattere oto ki-tov hu, vattitzpenehu sheloshah yerachim.
And the woman conceived, and bore a son; and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.
3.
וְלֹא-יָכְלָה עוֹד, הַצְּפִינוֹ, וַתִּקַּח-לוֹ תֵּבַת גֹּמֶא, וַתַּחְמְרָה בַחֵמָר וּבַזָּפֶת; וַתָּשֶׂם בָּהּ אֶת-הַיֶּלֶד, וַתָּשֶׂם בַּסּוּף עַל-שְׂפַת הַיְאֹר.
velo-yakhlah od, hatzefino, vayikkach-lo tevat gome, vattachmerah vakhemar uvazafet; vattasem bah et-hayeled, vattasem bassuf al-sefat hayor.
And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch; and she put the child therein, and laid it in the flags by the river's brink.
4.
וַתֵּתַצַּב אֲחֹתוֹ, מֵרָחֹק, לְדֵעָה, מַה-יֵּעָשֶׂה לוֹ.
vattetatzav akhoto, merakhok, lede'ah, mah-ye'aseh lo.
And his sister stood afar off, to know what would be done to him.

וַתֵּרֶד בַּת-פַּרְעֹה לִרְחֹץ עַל-הַיְאֹר, וְנַעֲרֹתֶיהָ הֹלְכֹת עַל-יַד הַיְאֹר; וַתֵּרֶא אֶת-הַתֵּבָה בְּתוֹךְ הַסּוּף, וַתִּשְׁלַח אֶת-אֲמָתָהּ וַתִּקָּחֶהָ.
vatterede bat-par'oh lirkhotz 'al-haye'or, vena'aroteha holekhot 'al-yad haye'or; vattere 'et-hatevah betokh hassuf, vattishlakh 'et-'amatahh vattiqqakheha.
And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe in the river; and her maidens walked along by the river-side; and she saw the ark among the flags, and sent her handmaid to fetch it.

וַתִּפְתַּח וַתִּרְאֵהוּ אֶת-הַיֶּלֶד, וְהִנֵּה-נַעַר בֹּכֶה; וַתַּחְמֹל עָלָיו--וַתֹּאמֶר, מִיַּלְדֵי הָעִבְרִים זֶה.
vattiptakh vattir'ehu et-hayyeled, vehinneh-na'ar bokheh; vattakhmol alav--vattomer, miyaldei ha'ivrim zeh.
And she opened it, and saw it, even the child; and behold a boy that wept. And she had compassion on him, and said: 'This is one of the Hebrews' children.'
7.
וַתֹּאמֶר אֲחֹתוֹ, אֶל-בַּת-פַּרְעֹה, הַאֵלֵךְ וְקָרָאתִי לָךְ אִשָּׁה מֵינֶקֶת, מִן הָעִבְרִיֹּת; וְתֵינִק לָךְ, אֶת-הַיָּלֶד.
vatto'mer akhato, el-bat-par'oh, ha'elekh ve'qarati lakh ishah meneket, min ha'ivriyot; ve'tenik lakh, et-hayaled.
Then said his sister to Pharaoh's daughter: 'Shall I go and call thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee?'
8.
וַתֹּאמֶר-לָהּ בַּת-פַּרְעֹה, לֵכִי; וַתֵּלֶךְ, הָעַלְמָה, וַתִּקְרָא, אֶת-אֵם הַיָּלֶד.
vattomer-lah bat-par'oh, lekhi; vattelek, ha'almah, vattiqra, et-em hayaled.
And Pharaoh's daughter said to her: 'Go.' And the maiden went and called the child's mother.
9.
וַתֹּאמֶר לָהּ בַּת-פַּרְעֹה, הֵילִיכִי אֶת-הַיֶּלֶד הַזֶּה וְהֵינִקִהוּ לִי, וַאֲנִי, אֶתֵּן אֶת-שְׂכָרֵךְ; וַתִּקַּח הָאִשָּׁה הַיֶּלֶד, וַתְּנִיקֵהוּ.
vatto'mer lah bat-par'oh, heyiliki et-hayeled hazzeh veheynikihu li, va'ani, etten et-sekarek; vattiqqach ha'ishshah hayeled, vatteynikehu.
And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her: 'Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages.' And the woman took the child, and nursed it.
10.
וַיִּגְדַּל הַיֶּלֶד, וַתְּבִאֵהוּ לְבַת-פַּרְעֹה, וַיְהִי-לָהּ, לְבֵן; וַתִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ, מֹשֶׁה, וַתֹּאמֶר, כִּי מִן-הַמַּיִם מְשִׁיתִהוּ.
Vayigdal hayeled, vatevi'ehu levat-Par'oh, vayhi-lah, leven; vatikra shemo, Moshe, vato'mer, ki min-hamayim meshithuhu.
And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses, and said: 'Because I drew him out of the water.'
11.
וַיְהִי בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם, וַיִּגְדַּל מֹשֶׁה וַיֵּצֵא אֶל-אֶחָיו, וַיַּרְא, בְּסִבְלֹתָם; וַיַּרְא אִישׁ מִצְרִי, מַכֶּה אִישׁ-עִבְרִי מֵאֶחָיו.
Vayehi bayamim hahem, vayigdal Moshe vayetze el-echav, vayar, besivlotam; vayar ish mitzri, makeh ish-ivri me'echav.
And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown up, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens; and he saw an Egyptian smiting a Hebrew, one of his brethren.
12.
וַיִּפֶן כֹּה וָכֹה, וַיַּרְא כִּי אֵין אִישׁ; וַיַּךְ, אֶת-הַמִּצְרִי, וַיִּטְמְנֵהוּ, בַּחוֹל.
vayifen koh vakoh, vayyar ki ein ish; vayyakh, et-hamitzri, vayyitmenehu, bakhol.
And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he smote the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.
13.
וַיֵּצֵא בַּיּוֹם הַשֵּׁנִי, וְהִנֵּה שְׁנֵי-אֲנָשִׁים עִבְרִים נִצִּים; וַיֹּאמֶר, לָרָשָׁע, לָמָּה תַכֶּה, רֵעֶךָ.
Vayetze bayom hasheni, vehinneh shenei-anashim ivrim nitzim; vayomer, larasha, lamma takkeh, re'ekha.
And he went out the second day, and, behold, two men of the Hebrews were striving together; and he said to him that did the wrong: 'Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow?'
14.
וַיֹּאמֶר מִי שָׂמְךָ לְאִישׁ שַׂר וְשֹׁפֵט, עָלֵינוּ--הַלְהָרְגֵנִי אַתָּה אֹמֵר, כַּאֲשֶׁר הָרַגְתָּ אֶת-הַמִּצְרִי; וַיִּירָא מֹשֶׁה וַיֹּאמַר, אָכֵן נוֹדַע הַדָּבָר.
vayomer mi samkha le'ish sar veshofet, aleinu--halharegeni attah omer, ka'asher haragta et-hamitzri; vayira Moshe vayomar, akhen noda hadavar.
And he said: 'Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us? thinkest thou to kill me, as thou didst kill the Egyptian?' And Moses feared, and said: 'Surely the thing is known.'
15.
וַיִּשְׁמַע פַּרְעֹה אֶת-הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה, וַיְבַקֵּשׁ לַהֲרֹג אֶת-מֹשֶׁה; וַיִּבְרַח מֹשֶׁה מִפְּנֵי פַרְעֹה, וַיֵּשֶׁב בְּאֶרֶץ-מִדְיָן וַיֵּשֶׁב עַל-הַבְּאֵר.
Vayishma Par'oh et-haddavar hazzeh, vayvakkesh laharog et-Moshe; vayvirach Moshe mipn'ei Par'oh, vayyeshev b'eretz-Midyyan vayyeshev al-habbe'er.
Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian; and he sat down by a well.
16.
וּלְכֹהֵן מִדְיָן, שֶׁבַע בָּנוֹת; וַתָּבֹאנָה וַתִּדְלֶנָה, וַתְּמַלֶּאנָה אֶת-הָרְהָטִים, לְהַשְׁקוֹת, צֹאן אֲבִיהֶן.
ul'khohen Midyan, sheva banot; vattavo'na vattidlenah, vattemalle'nah et-harehatim, lehashkot, tzon avihen.
Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters; and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.
17.
וַיָּבֹאוּ הָרֹעִים, וַיְגָרְשׁוּם; וַיָּקָם מֹשֶׁה וַיּוֹשִׁעָן, וַיַּשְׁקְ אֶת-צֹאנָם.
vayavo'u haro'im, vaygerushum; vayakam Moshe vayoshi'an, vayashk et-tsonam.
And the shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.
18.
וַתָּבֹאנָה, אֶל-רְעוּאֵל אֲבִיהֶן; וַיֹּאמֶר, מַדּוּעַ מִהַרְתֶּן בֹּא הַיּוֹם.
vattavo'nah, el-re'u'el avihen; vayyomer, madu'a miharten bo hayyom.
And when they came to Reuel their father, he said: 'How is it that ye are come so soon to-day?'
19.
וַתֹּאמַרְןָ--אִישׁ מִצְרִי, הִצִּילָנוּ מִיַּד הָרֹעִים; וְגַם-דָּלֹה דָלָה לָנוּ, וַיַּשְׁקְ אֶת-הַצֹּאן.
vatto'marna, ish mitzri hitzilanu miyyad haro'im; vegam-daloh dalah lanu, vayashk et-hatz'on.
And they said: 'An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and moreover he drew water for us, and watered the flock.'
20.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל-בְּנֹתָיו, וְאַיּוֹ; לָמָּה זֶּה עֲזַבְתֶּן אֶת-הָאִישׁ, קִרְאֶן לוֹ וְיֹאכַל לָחֶם.
vayomer el-benotav, ve'ayo; lammah zeh 'azavten et-ha'ish, kir'en lo veyokhal lakhem.
And he said unto his daughters: 'And where is he? Why is it that ye have left the man? call him, that he may eat bread.'
21.
וַיּוֹאֶל מֹשֶׁה, לָשֶׁבֶת אֶת-הָאִישׁ; וַיִּתֵּן אֶת-צִפֹּרָה בִתּוֹ, לְמֹשֶׁה.
vayio'el Moshe, lashevet et-ha'ish; vayitten et-tziporah bitto, leMoshe.
And Moses was content to dwell with the man; and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter.
22.
וַתֵּלֶד בֵּן, וַיִּקְרָא אֶת-שְׁמוֹ גֵּרְשֹׁם: כִּי אָמַר--גֵּר הָיִיתִי, בְּאֶרֶץ נָכְרִיָּה.
vatteled ben, vayiqra et-shemo Gershom: ki amar--ger hayiti, be'eretz nakhriyah.
And she bore a son, and he called his name Gershom; for he said: 'I have been a stranger in a strange land.'
23.
וַיְהִי בַיָּמִים הָרַבִּים הָהֵם, וַיָּמָת מֶלֶךְ מִצְרַיִם, וַיֵּאָנְחוּ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל מִן-הָעֲבֹדָה, וַיִּזְעָקוּ; וַתַּעַל שַׁוְעָתָם אֶל-הָאֱלֹהִים, מִן-הָעֲבֹדָה.
vayhi bayamim harabbim hahem, vayamat melekh mitzrayim, vaye'anhu venei-Yisrael min-ha'avodah, vayiz'aku; vatta'al shav'atam el-ha'Elohim, min-ha'avodah.
And it came to pass in the course of those many days that the king of Egypt died; and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage.
24.
וַיִּשְׁמַע אֱלֹהִים, אֶת-נַאֲקָתָם; וַיִּזְכֹּר אֱלֹהִים אֶת-בְּרִיתוֹ, אֶת-אַבְרָהָם אֶת-יִצְחָק וְאֶת-יַעֲקֹב.
vayishma Elohim, et-na'akatam; vayizkor Elohim et-berito, et-Avraham et-Yitzchak ve'et-Ya'akov.
And God heard their groaning, and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.
25.
וַיַּרְא אֱלֹהִים, אֶת-בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיֵּדַע, אֱלֹהִים.
vayar Elohim, et-b'nei Yisrael; vayeda, Elohim.
And God saw the children of Israel, and God took cognizance of them.
