1.
בִּשְׁנַת עֶשְׂרִים וְשָׁלֹשׁ שָׁנָה, לְיוֹאָשׁ בֶּן-אֲחַזְיָהוּ מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה--מָלַךְ יְהוֹאָחָז בֶּן-יֵהוּא עַל-יִשְׂרָאֵל, בְּשֹׁמְרוֹן, שְׁבַע עֶשְׂרֵה, שָׁנָה.
bishnat esrim veshalosh shanah, leYo'ash ben-Akhazyahu melekh Yehudah--malakh Yeho'akhaz ben-Yehu al-Yisrael, beshomron, sheva esrei, shanah.
In the three and twentieth year of Joash the son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned seventeen years.
2.
וַיַּעַשׂ הָרַע, בְּעֵינֵי יְהוָה; וַיֵּלֶךְ אַחַר חַטֹּאת יָרָבְעָם בֶּן-נְבָט, אֲשֶׁר-הֶחֱטִיא אֶת-יִשְׂרָאֵל--לֹא-סָר מִמֶּנָּה.
vayya'as ha'ra, be'einei YHWH; vayeilekh akhar khatot Yarov'am ben-nevat, asher-hekhtii et-Yisrael--lo-sar mimennah.
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, wherewith he made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.
3.
וַיִּחַר-אַף יְהוָה, בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיִּתְּנֵם בְּיַד חֲזָאֵל מֶלֶךְ-אֲרָם, וּבְיַד בֶּן-הֲדַד בֶּן-חֲזָאֵל--כָּל-הַיָּמִים.
vayyikhar-af YHWH, beYisrael; vayyittenem beyad khazael melekh-aram, uveyad ben-hadad ben-khazael--kol-hayamim.
And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and He delivered them into the hand of Hazael king of Aram, and into the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael, continually.
4.
וַיְחַל יְהוֹאָחָז, אֶת-פְּנֵי יְהוָה; וַיִּשְׁמַע אֵלָיו, יְהוָה, כִּי רָאָה אֶת-לַחַץ יִשְׂרָאֵל, כִּי-לָחַץ אֹתָם מֶלֶךְ אֲרָם.
vaykhal Yeho'akhaz, et-penei YHWH; vayyishma elav, YHWH, ki ra'ah et-lakhats Yisrael, ki-lakhats otam melekh aram.
And Jehoahaz besought the LORD, and the LORD hearkened unto him; for He saw the oppression of Israel, how that the king of Aram oppressed them.--
5.
וַיִּתֵּן יְהוָה לְיִשְׂרָאֵל, מוֹשִׁיעַ, וַיֵּצְאוּ, מִתַּחַת יַד-אֲרָם; וַיֵּשְׁבוּ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּאָהֳלֵיהֶם, כִּתְמוֹל שִׁלְשׁוֹם.
vayyitten YHWH leYisrael, moshi'a, vayetze'u, mittakhat yad-aram; vayyeshvu venei-Yisrael be'ohaleihem, kittmol shilshom.
And the LORD gave Israel a deliverer, so that they went out from under the hand of the Arameans; and the children of Israel dwelt in their tents, as beforetime.
6.
אַךְ לֹא-סָרוּ מֵחַטֹּאת בֵּית-יָרָבְעָם, אֲשֶׁר-הֶחֱטִי אֶת-יִשְׂרָאֵל--בָּהּ הָלָךְ; וְגַם, הָאֲשֵׁרָה, עָמְדָה, בְּשֹׁמְרוֹן.
akh lo-saru mehattot beit-yarov'am, asher-hekheti et-yisrael--bah halakh; vegam, ha'asherah, amdah, beshomron.
Nevertheless they departed not from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, wherewith he made Israel to sin, but walked therein; and there remained the Asherah also in Samaria.--
7.
כִּי לֹא הִשְׁאִיר לִיהוֹאָחָז עָם, כִּי אִם-חֲמִשִּׁים פָּרָשִׁים וַעֲשָׂרָה רֶכֶב, וַעֲשֶׂרֶת אֲלָפִים, רַגְלִי: כִּי אִבְּדָם מֶלֶךְ אֲרָם, וַיְשִׂמֵם כֶּעָפָר לָדֻשׁ.
ki lo hishir liho'akhaz am, ki im-hamishim parashim va'asarah rekhev, va'aseret alafim, ragli: ki ibdam melekh aram, vayvisimem ke'afar ladush.
For there was not left to Jehoahaz of the people save fifty horsemen, and ten chariots, and ten thousand footmen; for the king of Aram destroyed them, and made them like the dust in threshing.
8.
וְיֶתֶר דִּבְרֵי יְהוֹאָחָז וְכָל-אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה, וּגְבוּרָתוֹ: הֲלוֹא-הֵם כְּתוּבִים, עַל-סֵפֶר דִּבְרֵי הַיָּמִים--לְמַלְכֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל.
veyeter divrei yeho'akhaz vekhal-asher asha, ugevurato: halo-hem ketuvim, al-sefer divrei hayamim--lemalkhei yisrael.
Now the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, and all that he did, and his might, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
9.
וַיִּשְׁכַּב יְהוֹאָחָז עִם-אֲבֹתָיו, וַיִּקְבְּרֻהוּ בְּשֹׁמְרוֹן; וַיִּמְלֹךְ יוֹאָשׁ בְּנוֹ, תַּחְתָּיו.
vayvishkav yeho'akhaz im-avotav, vayvikbruhu beshomron; vayimlokh yo'ash benו, takhtav.
And Jehoahaz slept with his fathers; and they buried him in Samaria; and Joash his son reigned in his stead.
10.
בִּשְׁנַת שְׁלֹשִׁים וָשֶׁבַע שָׁנָה, לְיוֹאָשׁ מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה--מָלַךְ יְהוֹאָשׁ בֶּן-יְהוֹאָחָז עַל-יִשְׂרָאֵל, בְּשֹׁמְרוֹן, שֵׁשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה, שָׁנָה.
bishnat sheloshim vasheva shanah, leyo'ash melekh yehudah--malakh yeho'ash ben-yeho'akhaz al-yisrael, beshomron, shesh eshrei, shanah.
In the thirty and seventh year of Joash king of Judah began Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned sixteen years.
11.
וַיַּעֲשֶׂה הָרַע, בְּעֵינֵי יְהוָה: לֹא סָר מִכָּל-חַטֹּאות יָרָבְעָם בֶּן-נְבָט, אֲשֶׁר-הֶחֱטִיא אֶת-יִשְׂרָאֵל--בָּהּ הָלָךְ.
vaya'aseh hara, be'einei YHWH: lo sar mikkol-hattouot yarav'am ben-nevat, asher-hehetii et-yisrael--bah halakh.
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD; he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, wherewith he made Israel to sin; but he walked therein.
12.
וְיֶתֶר דִּבְרֵי יוֹאָשׁ, וְכָל-אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה, וּגְבוּרָתוֹ, אֲשֶׁר נִלְחַם עִם אֲמַצְיָה מֶלֶךְ-יְהוּדָה: הֲלֹא-הֵם כְּתוּבִים, עַל-סֵפֶר דִּבְרֵי הַיָּמִים--לְמַלְכֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל.
veyeter divrei yo'ash, vekhol-asher ashah, ugevurato, asher nilham im amatzyah melekh-yehudah: halo-hem ketuvim, al-sefer divrei hayamim--lemalkhei yisrael.
Now the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, and his might wherewith he fought against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
13.
וַיִּשְׁכַּב יוֹאָשׁ עִם-אֲבֹתָיו, וְיָרָבְעָם יָשַׁב עַל-כִּסְאוֹ; וַיִּקָּבֵר יוֹאָשׁ בְּשֹׁמְרוֹן, עִם מַלְכֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל.
vayvishkav yo'ash im-avotav, veyarav'am yashav al-kis'o; vayyikaver yo'ash beshomron, im malkhei yisrael.
And Joash slept with his fathers; and Jeroboam sat upon his throne; and Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.
14.
וֶאֱלִישָׁע חָלָה אֶת-חָלְיוֹ, אֲשֶׁר יָמוּת בּוֹ; וַיֵּרֶד אֵלָיו יוֹאָשׁ מֶלֶךְ-יִשְׂרָאֵל, וַיֵּבְךְּ עַל-פָּנָיו וַיֹּאמַר, אָבִי אָבִי, רֶכֶב יִשְׂרָאֵל וּפָרָשָׁיו.
ve'elisha chalah et-chalyo, asher yamut bo; vayered elayv Yo'ash melekh-Yisrael, vayevkh al-panayv vayomer, avi avi, rekhev Yisrael uforashayv.
Now Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness whereof he was to die; and Joash the king of Israel came down unto him, and wept over him, and said: 'My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and the horsemen thereof!'
15.
וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ אֱלִישָׁע, קַח קֶשֶׁת וְחִצִּים; וַיִּקַּח אֵלָיו, קֶשֶׁת וְחִצִּים.
vayomer lo elisha, kach keshet vechitzim; vayikkach elayv, keshet vechitzim.
And Elisha said unto him: 'Take bow and arrows'; and he took unto him bow and arrows.
16.
וַיֹּאמֶר לְמֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל, הַרְכֵּב יָדְךָ עַל-הַקֶּשֶׁת, וַיַּרְכֵּב, יָדוֹ; וַיָּשֶׂם אֱלִישָׁע יָדָיו, עַל-יְדֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ.
vayomer lemelekh Yisrael, harkev yadkha al-hakeshet, vayarkev, yado; vayasem elisha yadayv, al-yede hamelekh.
And he said to the king of Israel: 'Put thy hand upon the bow'; and he put his hand upon it. And Elisha laid his hands upon the king's hands.
17.
וַיֹּאמֶר, פְּתַח הַחַלּוֹן קֵדְמָה--וַיִּפְתָּח; וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלִישָׁע יְרֵה, וַיּוֹר, וַיֹּאמֶר חֵץ-תְּשׁוּעָה לַיהוָה וְחֵץ תְּשׁוּעָה בַאֲרָם, וְהִכִּיתָ אֶת-אֲרָם בַּאֲפֵק עַד-כַּלֵּה.
vayomer, petach hachalon kedmah--vayiftach; vayomer elisha yere, vayor, vayomer chets-teshu'ah laYHWH vechets teshU'ah ba'aram, vehikita et-aram ba'afek ad-kalleh.
And he said: 'Open the window eastward'; and he opened it. Then Elisha said: 'Shoot'; and he shot. And he said: 'The LORD'S arrow of victory, even the arrow of victory against Aram; for thou shalt smite the Arameans in Aphek, till thou have consumed them.'
18.
וַיֹּאמֶר קַח הַחִצִּים, וַיִּקָּח; וַיֹּאמֶר לְמֶלֶךְ-יִשְׂרָאֵל הַךְ-אַרְצָה, וַיַּךְ שָׁלֹשׁ-פְּעָמִים וַיַּעֲמֹד.
vayomer kakh hachitzim, vayikakh; vayomer lemelekh-Yisrael hakh-artzah, vayakh shalosh-pe'amim vaya'amod.
And he said: 'Take the arrows'; and he took them. And he said unto the king of Israel: 'Smite upon the ground'; and he smote thrice, and stayed.
19.
וַיִּקְצֹף עָלָיו אִישׁ הָאֱלֹהִים, וַיֹּאמֶר לְהַכּוֹת חָמֵשׁ אוֹ-שֵׁשׁ פְּעָמִים, אָז הִכִּיתָ אֶת-אֲרָם, עַד-כַּלֵּה; וְעַתָּה, שָׁלֹשׁ פְּעָמִים תַּכֶּה אֶת-אֲרָם.
vayiktzof alav ish haElohim, vayomer lehakot khamesh o-shesh pe'amim, az hikita et-Aram, ad-kalleh; ve'atah, shalosh pe'amim takkeh et-Aram.
And the man of God was wroth with him, and said: 'Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times; then hadst thou smitten Aram till thou hadst consumed it; whereas now thou shalt smite Aram but thrice.'
20.
וַיָּמָת אֱלִישָׁע, וַיִּקְבְּרֻהוּ; וּגְדוּדֵי מוֹאָב יָבֹאוּ בָאָרֶץ, בָּא שָׁנָה.
vayamat Elisha, vayikberuhu; ugedudei Moav yavo'u ba'aretz, ba shanah.
And Elisha died, and they buried him. Now the bands of the Moabites used to invade the land at the coming in of the year.
21.
וַיְהִי הֵם קֹבְרִים אִישׁ, וְהִנֵּה רָאוּ אֶת-הַגְּדוּד, וַיַּשְׁלִיכוּ אֶת-הָאִישׁ, בְּקֶבֶר אֱלִישָׁע; וַיֵּלֶךְ וַיִּגַּע הָאִישׁ, בְּעַצְמוֹת אֱלִישָׁע, וַיְחִי, וַיָּקָם עַל-רַגְלָיו.
vayhi hem kovrim ish, vehinneh ra'u et-hagedud, vayshlichu et-ha'ish, bekever Elisha; vayelekh vayigga ha'ish, be'atzmot Elisha, vaykhi, vayam al-raglav.
And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band; and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha; and as soon as the man touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet.
22.
וַחֲזָאֵל מֶלֶךְ אֲרָם, לָחַץ אֶת-יִשְׂרָאֵל, כֹּל, יְמֵי יְהוֹאָחָז.
vachaza'el melech aram, lachatz et-yisrael, kol, yeme yeho'achaz.
And Hazael king of Aram oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz.
23.
וַיָּחָן יְהוָה אֹתָם וַיְרַחֲמֵם, וַיִּפֶן אֲלֵיהֶם, לְמַעַן בְּרִיתוֹ, אֶת-אַבְרָהָם יִצְחָק וְיַעֲקֹב; וְלֹא אָבָה הַשְׁחִיתָם, וְלֹא-הִשְׁלִיכָם מֵעַל-פָּנָיו עַד-עָתָּה.
vayachan yHwH otam vayrachamem, vayifen alehem, lema'an berito, et-avraham yitzchak veya'akov; velo avaha hashchitam, velo-hishlicham me'al-panav ad-attah.
But the LORD was gracious unto them, and had compassion on them, and had respect unto them, because of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, neither hath He cast them from His presence until now.
24.
וַיָּמָת, חֲזָאֵל מֶלֶךְ-אֲרָם; וַיִּמְלֹךְ בֶּן-הֲדַד בְּנוֹ, תַּחְתָּיו.
vayamat, chaza'el melech-aram; vayimlokh ben-hadad beno, tachtayv.
And Hazael king of Aram died; and Ben-hadad his son reigned in his stead.
25.
וַיָּשָׁב יְהוֹאָשׁ בֶּן-יְהוֹאָחָז, וַיִּקַּח אֶת-הֶעָרִים מִיַּד בֶּן-הֲדַד בֶּן-חֲזָאֵל, אֲשֶׁר לָקַח מִיַּד יְהוֹאָחָז אָבִיו, בַּמִּלְחָמָה: שָׁלֹשׁ פְּעָמִים הִכָּהוּ יוֹאָשׁ, וַיָּשֶׁב אֶת-עָרֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל.
vayashav yeho'ash ben-yeho'achaz, vayikkach et-he'arim miyad ben-hadad ben-chaza'el, asher lakach miyad yeho'achaz aviv, bamilchamah: shalosh pe'amim hikahu yo'ash, vayashev et-arei yisrael.
And Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz took again out of the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael the cities which he had taken out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father by war. Three times did Joash smite him, and recovered the cities of Israel.
