וַיָּבֹא רְחַבְעָם, יְרוּשָׁלִַם, וַיַּקְהֵל אֶת-בֵּית יְהוּדָה וּבִנְיָמִן מֵאָה וּשְׁמוֹנִים אֶלֶף בָּחוּר, עֹשֵׂה מִלְחָמָה--לְהִלָּחֵם, עִם-יִשְׂרָאֵל, לְהָשִׁיב אֶת-הַמַּמְלָכָה, לִרְחַבְעָם.
vayavo rehav'am yerushalayim vayakhel et beit yehuda ubinyamin me'ah ushmonim elef bahur oseh milhamah lehilahem im yisrael lehashiv et hamamlakah lirhav'am.
And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled the house of Judah and Benjamin, a hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, that were warriors, to fight against Israel, to bring the kingdom back to Rehoboam.
2.
וַיְהִי, דְּבַר-יְהוָה, אֶל-שְׁמַעְיָהוּ אִישׁ-הָאֱלֹהִים, לֵאמֹר.
vayehi devar YHWH el shema'yahu ish ha'elohim lemor.
But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying:
3.
אֱמֹר, אֶל-רְחַבְעָם בֶּן-שְׁלֹמֹה מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה--וְאֶל, כָּל-יִשְׂרָאֵל, בִּיהוּדָה וּבִנְיָמִן, לֵאמֹר.
emor el rehav'am ben shlomo melekh yehuda ve'el kol yisrael biyehuda ubinyamin lemor.
'Speak unto Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, saying:
4.
כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה לֹא-תַעֲלוּ וְלֹא-תִלָּחֲמוּ עִם-אֲחֵיכֶם, שׁוּבוּ אִישׁ לְבֵיתוֹ--כִּי מֵאִתִּי נִהְיָה, הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה; וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ אֶת-דִּבְרֵי יְהוָה, וַיָּשֻׁבוּ מִלֶּכֶת אֶל-יָרָבְעָם.
koh amar YHWH lo ta'alu velo tilahamu im ahikhem shubu ish leveito ki me'iti nihyah hadavar hazeh vayishme'u et divrei YHWH vayashuvu milehet el yarov'am.
Thus saith the LORD: Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren; return every man to his house, for this thing is of Me.' So they hearkened unto the words of the LORD, and returned from going against Jeroboam.

וַיֵּשֶׁב רְחַבְעָם, בִּירוּשָׁלִָם; וַיִּבֶן עָרִים לְמָצוֹר, בִּיהוּדָה.
vayeshev Rehav'am, birushalayim; vayiven arim lematzor, bihudah.
And Rehoboam dwelt in Jerusalem, and built cities for defence in Judah.
6.
וַיִּבֶן אֶת-בֵּית-לֶחֶם וְאֶת-עֵיטָם, וְאֶת-תְּקוֹעַ.
vayiven et-beit-lechem ve'et-eitam, ve'et-teko'a.
He built even Beth-lehem, and Etam, and Tekoa,
7.
וְאֶת-בֵּית-צוּר וְאֶת-שׂוֹכוֹ, וְאֶת-עֲדֻלָּם.
ve'et-beit-tzur ve'et-sokho, ve'et-adullam.
and Beth-zur, and Soco, and Adullam,
8.
וְאֶת-גַּת וְאֶת-מָרֵשָׁה, וְאֶת-זִיף.
ve'et-gat ve'et-mareshah, ve'et-zif.
and Gath, and Mareshah, and Ziph,
9.
וְאֶת-אֲדוֹרַיִם וְאֶת-לָכִישׁ, וְאֶת-עֲזֵקָה.
ve'et-adorayim ve'et-lakish, ve'et-aze'kah.
and Adoraim, and Lachish, and Azekah,
10.
וְאֶת-צָרְעָה, וְאֶת-אַיָּלוֹן, וְאֶת-חֶבְרוֹן, אֲשֶׁר בִּיהוּדָה וּבְבִנְיָמִן: עָרֵי, מְצֻרוֹת.
ve'et-tsart'ah, ve'et-ayalon, ve'et-khevron, asher bihudah uvevinyamin: arei, mettsurot.
and Zorah, and Aijalon, and Hebron, which are in Judah and in Benjamin, fortified cities.
11.
וַיְחַזֵּק, אֶת-הַמְּצוּרוֹת; וַיִּתֵּן בָּהֶם נְגִידִים, וְאֹצְרוֹת מַאֲכָל וְשֶׁמֶן וָיָיִן.
vaykhazek, et-hammettsurot; vayitten bahem negidim, ve'otsrot ma'akhal veshemen vayayin.
And he fortified the strongholds, and put captains in them, and store of victual, and oil and wine.
12.
וּבְכָל-עִיר וָעִיר צִנּוֹת וּרְמָחִים, וַיְחַזְּקֵם לְהַרְבֵּה מְאֹד; וַיְהִי-לוֹ, יְהוּדָה וּבִנְיָמִן.
uvkhal-ir vair ttsinot uremakhim, vaykhazekem leharbeh me'od; vayhi-lo, yehudah uvinyamin.
And in every city he put shields and spears, and made them exceeding strong. And Judah and Benjamin adhered to him.
13.
וְהַכֹּהֲנִים, וְהַלְוִיִּם, אֲשֶׁר, בְּכָל-יִשְׂרָאֵל--הִתְיַצְּבוּ עָלָיו, מִכָּל-גְּבוּלָם.
vehakohanim, vehalviyim, asher, bekhol-yisrael--hityatzvu alav, mikkol-gevulam.
And the priests and the Levites that were in all Israel presented themselves to him out of all their border.
14.
כִּי-עָזְבוּ הַלְוִיִּם, אֶת-מִגְרְשֵׁיהֶם וַאֲחֻזָּתָם, וַיֵּלְכוּ לִיהוּדָה, וְלִירוּשָׁלִָם: כִּי-הִזְנִיחָם יָרָבְעָם וּבָנָיו, מִכַּהֵן לַיהוָה.
ki-azevu halviyim, et-migresheyhem va'achuzzatam, vayyelekhu lihudah, veliyrushalayim: ki-hiznicham yarav'am uvanav, mikkaken laYHWH.
For the Levites left their open land and their possession, and came to Judah and Jerusalem; for Jeroboam and his sons cast them off, that they should not execute the priest's office unto the LORD;
15.
וַיַּעֲמֶד-לוֹ כֹּהֲנִים, לַבָּמוֹת וְלַשְּׂעִירִים, וְלָעֲגָלִים, אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה.
vaya'amed-lo kohanim, labamot velas'irim, vela'agalim, asher asah.
and he appointed him priests for the high places, and for the satyrs, and for the calves which he had made.
16.
וְאַחֲרֵיהֶם, מִכֹּל שִׁבְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, הַנֹּתְנִים אֶת-לְבָבָם, לְבַקֵּשׁ אֶת-יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל--בָּאוּ, יְרוּשָׁלִַם, לִזְבּוֹחַ, לַיהוָה אֱלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵיהֶם.
ve'achareyhem, mikkol shivtei yisrael, hannotenim et-levavam, levakkesh et-YHWH Elohei yisrael--ba'u, yerushalayim, lizboach, laYHWH Elohei avoteihem.
And after them, out of all the tribes of Israel, such as set their hearts to seek the LORD, the God of Israel, came to Jerusalem to sacrifice unto the LORD, the God of their fathers.
17.
וַיְחַזְּקוּ אֶת-מַלְכוּת יְהוּדָה, וַיְאַמְּצוּ אֶת-רְחַבְעָם בֶּן-שְׁלֹמֹה לְשָׁנִים שָׁלוֹשׁ: כִּי הָלְכוּ, בְּדֶרֶךְ דָּוִיד וּשְׁלֹמֹה--לְשָׁנִים שָׁלוֹשׁ.
vaykhazzeku et-malkhut yehudah, veyam'tsu et-rehav'am ben-shlomoh leshanim shalosh: ki halekhu, bederekh david ushlomoh--leshanim shalosh.
So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong, three years; for they walked three years in the way of David and Solomon.
18.
וַיִּקַּח-לוֹ רְחַבְעָם, אִשָּׁה--אֶת-מָחֲלַת, בן- בַּת- יְרִימוֹת בֶּן-דָּוִיד: אֲבִיהַיִל, בַּת-אֱלִיאָב בֶּן-יִשָׁי.
vayikak-lo rehav'am, ishah--et-mahalat, ben- bat- yerimot ben-david: avihayil, bat-eli'av ben-yishay.
And Rehoboam took him a wife, Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David, and of Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse;
19.
וַתֵּלֶד לוֹ, בָּנִים--אֶת-יְעוּשׁ וְאֶת-שְׁמַרְיָה, וְאֶת-זָהַם.
vatteled lo, banim--et-ye'ush ve'et-shmaryah, ve'et-zaham.
and she bore him sons: Jeush, and Shemariah, and Zaham.
20.
וְאַחֲרֶיהָ לָקַח, אֶת-מַעֲכָה בַּת-אַבְשָׁלוֹם; וַתֵּלֶד לוֹ, אֶת-אֲבִיָּה וְאֶת-עַתַּי, וְאֶת-זִיזָא, וְאֶת-שְׁלֹמִית.
ve'ahareha lakach, et-ma'akah bat-avshalom; vatteled lo, et-aviyah ve'et-atay, ve'et-ziza, ve'et-shlomit.
And after her he took Maacah the daughter of Absalom; and she bore him Abijah, and Attai, and Ziza, and Shelomith.
21.
וַיֶּאֱהַב רְחַבְעָם אֶת-מַעֲכָה בַת-אַבְשָׁלוֹם, מִכָּל-נָשָׁיו וּפִילַגְשָׁיו--כִּי נָשִׁים שְׁמוֹנֶה-עֶשְׂרֵה נָשָׂא, וּפִילַגְשִׁים שִׁשִּׁים; וַיּוֹלֶד, עֶשְׂרִים וּשְׁמוֹנָה בָּנִים--וְשִׁשִּׁים בָּנוֹת.
vay'ehav r'khav'am et-ma'akhah vat-avshalom, mikal-nashav ufilagshav--ki nashim sh'moneh-esreh nasa, ufilagshim shishim; vayoled, esrim ushmonah banim--v'shishim banot.
And Rehoboam loved Maacah the daughter of Absalom above all his wives and his concubines--for he took eighteen wives, and threescore concubines, and begot twenty and eight sons and threescore daughters.
22.
וַיַּעֲמֵד לָרֹאשׁ רְחַבְעָם אֶת-אֲבִיָּה בֶן-מַעֲכָה, לְנָגִיד בְּאֶחָיו--כִּי, לְהַמְלִיכוֹ.
vaya'amed larosh r'khav'am et-aviyah ven-ma'akhah, l'nagid b'ekhav--ki, l'hamlikho.
And Rehoboam appointed Abijah the son of Maacah to be chief, even the prince among his brethren; for he was minded to make him king.
23.
וַיָּבֶן וַיִּפְרֹץ מִכָּל-בָּנָיו לְכָל-אַרְצוֹת יְהוּדָה וּבִנְיָמִן, לְכֹל עָרֵי הַמְּצֻרוֹת, וַיִּתֵּן לָהֶם הַמָּזוֹן, לָרֹב; וַיִּשְׁאַל, הֲמוֹן נָשִׁים.
vayaven vayifrotz mikal-banav l'khol-artsot y'hudah uvinyamin, l'khol arei hamtzurot, vayiten lahem hamazon, larov; vayish'al, hamon nashim.
And he dealt wisely, and dispersed of all his sons throughout all the lands of Judah and Benjamin, unto every fortified city; and he gave them victual in abundance. And he sought for them many wives.
