1.
וַיְהִי, כַּאֲשֶׁר זָקֵן שְׁמוּאֵל; וַיָּשֶׂם אֶת-בָּנָיו שֹׁפְטִים, לְיִשְׂרָאֵל.
vayehi, ka'asher zaken Shemu'el; vayasem et-banav shoftim, leYisrael.
And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
2.
וַיְהִי שֶׁם-בְּנוֹ הַבְּכוֹר יוֹאֵל, וְשֵׁם מִשְׁנֵהוּ אֲבִיָּה--שֹׁפְטִים, בִּבְאֵר שָׁבַע.
vayehi shem-beno habechor Yo'el, veshem mishnehu Aviyah--shoftim, biv'er sheva.
Now the name of his first-born was Joel; and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beer-sheba.
3.
וְלֹא-הָלְכוּ בָנָיו בִּדְרָכָו, וַיִּטּוּ אַחֲרֵי הַבָּצַע; וַיִּקְחוּ-שֹׁחַד--וַיַּטּוּ, מִשְׁפָּט.
velo-halechu vanav bidrachav, vayittu acharei habatzay; vayikchu-shochad--vayattu, mishpat.
And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted justice.
4.
וַיִּתְקַבְּצוּ, כֹּל זִקְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיָּבֹאוּ אֶל-שְׁמוּאֵל, הָרָמָתָה.
vayitkabtsu, kol ziknei Yisrael; vayavo'u el-Shmuel, haramatah.
Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah.
5.
וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו, הִנֵּה אַתָּה זָקַנְתָּ, וּבָנֶיךָ, לֹא הָלְכוּ בִּדְרָכֶיךָ; עַתָּה, שִׂימָה-לָּנוּ מֶלֶךְ לְשָׁפְטֵנוּ--כְּכָל-הַגּוֹיִם.
vayomru elav, hineh atah zakanta, uvanekha, lo halekhu bidrakhekha; atah, simah-lanu melekh leshaftenu--kekhol-hagoyim.
And they said unto him: 'Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways; now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.'
6.
וַיֵּרַע הַדָּבָר, בְּעֵינֵי שְׁמוּאֵל, כַּאֲשֶׁר אָמְרוּ, תְּנָה-לָּנוּ מֶלֶךְ לְשָׁפְטֵנוּ; וַיִּתְפַּלֵּל שְׁמוּאֵל, אֶל-יְהוָה.
vayera hadavar, be'einei Shmuel, ka'asher amru, tenah-lanu melekh leshaftenu; vayitpallel Shmuel, el-YHWH.
But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said: 'Give us a king to judge us.' And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.
7.
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה, אֶל-שְׁמוּאֵל, שְׁמַע בְּקוֹל הָעָם, לְכֹל אֲשֶׁר-יֹאמְרוּ אֵלֶיךָ: כִּי לֹא אֹתְךָ מָאָסוּ, כִּי-אֹתִי מָאֲסוּ מִמְּלֹךְ עֲלֵיהֶם.
vayomer YHWH, el-Shmuel, shema bekol ha'am, lekhol asher-yomru eilekha: ki lo otkha ma'asu, ki-oti ma'asu mimlokh aleihem.
And the LORD said unto Samuel: 'Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee; for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected Me, that I should not be king over them.
8.
כְּכָל-הַמַּעֲשִׂים אֲשֶׁר-עָשׂוּ, מִיּוֹם הַעֲלֹתִי אוֹתָם מִמִּצְרַיִם וְעַד-הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה, וַיַּעַזְבֻנִי, וַיַּעַבְדוּ אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים--כֵּן הֵמָּה עֹשִׂים, גַּם-לָךְ.
kekhol-hama'asim asher-asou, miyom ha'aloti otam mimitrayim ve'ad-hayom hazeh, vayya'azvuni, vayya'avdu Elohim akherim--ken hemmah oshim, gam-lakh.
According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, in that they have forsaken Me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
9.
וְעַתָּה, שְׁמַע בְּקוֹלָם: אַךְ, כִּי-הָעֵד תָּעִיד בָּהֶם, וְהִגַּדְתָּ לָהֶם, מִשְׁפַּט הַמֶּלֶךְ אֲשֶׁר יִמְלֹךְ עֲלֵיהֶם.
ve'attah, shema beqolam: akh, ki-ha'ed ta'id bahem, vehiggadta lahem, mishpat hamelekh asher yimlokh aleihem.
Now therefore hearken unto their voice; howbeit thou shalt earnestly forewarn them, and shalt declare unto them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.'
10.
וַיֹּאמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל, אֵת כָּל-דִּבְרֵי יְהוָה, אֶל-הָעָם, הַשֹּׁאֲלִים מֵאִתּוֹ מֶלֶךְ.
vayyomer Shmu'el, et kol-divrei YHWH, el-ha'am, hashsho'alim me'itto melekh.
And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king.
11.
וַיֹּאמֶר--זֶה יִהְיֶה מִשְׁפַּט הַמֶּלֶךְ, אֲשֶׁר יִמְלֹךְ עֲלֵיכֶם: אֶת-בְּנֵיכֶם יִקָּח, וְשָׂם לוֹ בְּמֶרְכַּבְתּוֹ וּבְפָרָשָׁיו, וְרָצוּ, לִפְנֵי מֶרְכַּבְתּוֹ.
vayyomer--zeh yihyeh mishpat hamelekh, asher yimlokh aleikhem: et-bneikhem yiqakh, vesam lo bemerkavto uvefarashav, veratzu, lifnei merkavto.
And he said: 'This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them unto him, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and they shall run before his chariots.
12.
וְלָשׂוּם לוֹ, שָׂרֵי אֲלָפִים וְשָׂרֵי חֲמִשִּׁים; וְלַחֲרֹשׁ חֲרִישׁוֹ וְלִקְצֹר קְצִירוֹ, וְלַעֲשׂוֹת כְּלֵי-מִלְחַמְתּוֹ וּכְלֵי רִכְבּוֹ.
vela'sum lo, sare alafim ve'sare khamishim; ve'lakharosh kharisho ve'liktzor ktziro, ve'la'asot kele-milkhamto ukhle rikhbo.
And he will appoint them unto him for captains of thousands, and captains of fifties; and to plow his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and the instruments of his chariots.
13.
וְאֶת-בְּנוֹתֵיכֶם, יִקָּח, לְרַקָּחוֹת וּלְטַבָּחוֹת, וּלְאֹפוֹת.
ve'et-benotekhem, yikakh, le'rakhakhot ule'tabakhot, ule'ofot.
And he will take your daughters to be perfumers, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.
14.
וְאֶת-שְׂדוֹתֵיכֶם וְאֶת-כַּרְמֵיכֶם וְזֵיתֵיכֶם, הַטּוֹבִים--יִקָּח; וְנָתַן, לַעֲבָדָיו.
ve'et-sedotekhem ve'et-karmekhem ve'zeitekhem, hatovim--yikakh; ve'natan, la'avadav.
And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.
15.
וְזַרְעֵיכֶם וְכַרְמֵיכֶם, יַעְשֹׂר; וְנָתַן לְסָרִיסָיו, וְלַעֲבָדָיו.
ve'zar'ekhem ve'karmekhem, ya'sor; ve'natan le'sarisav, ve'la'avadav.
And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.
16.
וְאֶת-עַבְדֵיכֶם וְאֶת-שִׁפְחוֹתֵיכֶם וְאֶת-בַּחוּרֵיכֶם הַטּוֹבִים, וְאֶת-חֲמוֹרֵיכֶם--יִקָּח; וְעָשָׂה, לִמְלַאכְתּוֹ.
ve'et-avdeykhem ve'et-shifkhoteykhem ve'et-bakhureykhem hatovim, ve'et-khamoreykhem--yikakh; ve'asaha, limlaktow.
And he will take your men-servants, and your maid-servants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.
17.
צֹאנְכֶם, יַעְשֹׂר; וְאַתֶּם, תִּהְיוּ-לוֹ לַעֲבָדִים.
tsonkhem, ya'sor; ve'atem, tihyu-lo la'avadim.
He will take the tenth of your flocks; and ye shall be his servants.
18.
וּזְעַקְתֶּם, בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא, מִלִּפְנֵי מַלְכְּכֶם, אֲשֶׁר בְּחַרְתֶּם לָכֶם; וְלֹא-יַעֲנֶה יְהוָה אֶתְכֶם, בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא.
uze'aktem, bayom hahu, millifnei malkekhem, asher bekhar-tem lakhem; velo-ya'aneh YHWH etkhem, bayom hahu.
And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king whom ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not answer you in that day.'
19.
וַיְמָאֲנוּ הָעָם, לִשְׁמֹעַ בְּקוֹל שְׁמוּאֵל; וַיֹּאמְרוּ לֹּא, כִּי אִם-מֶלֶךְ יִהְיֶה עָלֵינוּ.
vayma'anu ha'am, lishmo'a bekol Shemu'el; vayomru lo, ki im-melekh yihyeh aleinu.
But the people refused to hearken unto the voice of Samuel; and they said: 'Nay; but there shall be a king over us;
20.
וְהָיִינוּ גַם-אֲנַחְנוּ, כְּכָל-הַגּוֹיִם; וּשְׁפָטָנוּ מַלְכֵּנוּ וְיָצָא לְפָנֵינוּ, וְנִלְחַם אֶת-מִלְחֲמֹתֵנוּ.
ve'hayinu gam-anachnu, kekhol-hagoyim; ushfatanu malkenu ve'yatza lefaneenu, venilham et-milchamotenu.
that we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.'
21.
וַיִּשְׁמַע שְׁמוּאֵל, אֵת כָּל-דִּבְרֵי הָעָם; וַיְדַבְּרֵם, בְּאָזְנֵי יְהוָה.
vayishma Shemu'el, et kol-divrei ha'am; vaydabrem, be'oznei YHWH.
And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he spoke them in the ears of the LORD.
22.
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל-שְׁמוּאֵל שְׁמַע בְּקוֹלָם, וְהִמְלַכְתָּ לָהֶם מֶלֶךְ; וַיֹּאמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל אֶל-אַנְשֵׁי יִשְׂרָאֵל, לְכוּ אִישׁ לְעִירוֹ.
vayomer YHWH el-Shemu'el shema beqolam, vehimlakta lahem melekh; vayomer Shemu'el el-anshei Yisrael, lekhu ish le'iro.
And the LORD said to Samuel: 'Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king.' And Samuel said unto the men of Israel: 'Go ye every man unto his city.'
