1.
וַיָּבֹאוּ אַנְשֵׁי קִרְיַת יְעָרִים, וַיַּעֲלוּ אֶת-אֲרוֹן יְהוָה, וַיָּבִאוּ אֹתוֹ, אֶל-בֵּית אֲבִינָדָב בַּגִּבְעָה; וְאֶת-אֶלְעָזָר בְּנוֹ קִדְּשׁוּ, לִשְׁמֹר אֶת-אֲרוֹן יְהוָה.
vayavo'u anshei kiryat ye'arim, vaya'alu et-aron YHWH, vayavi'u oto, el-beit avinadav bagiv'ah; ve'et-el'azar beno kid'shu, lishmor et-aron YHWH.
And the men of Kiriath-jearim came, and fetched up the ark of the LORD, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD.
2.
וַיְהִי, מִיּוֹם שֶׁבֶת הָאָרוֹן בְּקִרְיַת יְעָרִים, וַיִּרְבּוּ הַיָּמִים, וַיִּהְיוּ עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה; וַיִּנָּהוּ כָּל-בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל, אַחֲרֵי יְהוָה.
vayhi, miyom shevet ha'aron bekiryat ye'arim, vayirbu hayamim, vayhiyu esrim shanah; vayinnahu kol-beit Yisrael, acharei YHWH.
And it came to pass, from the day that the ark abode in Kiriath-jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years; and all the house of Israel yearned after the LORD.

וַיֹּאמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל, אֶל-כָּל-בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל לֵאמֹר, אִם-בְּכָל-לְבַבְכֶם אַתֶּם שָׁבִים אֶל-יְהוָה, הָסִירוּ אֶת-אֱלֹהֵי הַנֵּכָר מִתּוֹכְכֶם וְהָעַשְׁתָּרוֹת; וְהָכִינוּ לְבַבְכֶם אֶל-יְהוָה וְעִבְדֻהוּ לְבַדּוֹ, וְיַצֵּל אֶתְכֶם מִיַּד פְּלִשְׁתִּים.
vayomer Shmu'el, el-kol-beit Yisrael lemor, im-bekhol-levavkhem atem shavim el-YHWH, hasiru et-elohei hanechar mitokhem veha'ashtarot; vehakhinu levavkhem el-YHWH ve'ivduhu levado, veyatzel etkhem miyad pelishtim.
And Samuel spoke unto all the house of Israel, saying: 'If ye do return unto the LORD with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you, and direct your hearts unto the LORD, and serve Him only; and He will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.'

וַיָּסִירוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, אֶת-הַבְּעָלִים וְאֶת-הָעַשְׁתָּרֹת; וַיַּעַבְדוּ אֶת-יְהוָה, לְבַדּוֹ.
vayasiru benei Yisrael, et-habe'alim ve'et-ha'ashtarot; vaya'avdu et-YHWH, levado.
Then the children of Israel did put away the Baalim and the Ashtaroth, and served the LORD only.
5.
וַיֹּאמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל, קִבְצוּ אֶת-כָּל-יִשְׂרָאֵל הַמִּצְפָּתָה; וְאֶתְפַּלֵּל בַּעַדְכֶם, אֶל-יְהוָה.
vayomer Shmuel, kivtsu et-kol-Yisrael hamitspatah; ve'etpallel ba'adkhem, el-YHWH.
And Samuel said: 'Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray for you unto the LORD.'
6.
וַיִּקָּבְצוּ הַמִּצְפָּתָה וַיִּשְׁאֲבוּ-מַיִם וַיִּשְׁפְּכוּ לִפְנֵי יְהוָה, וַיָּצוּמוּ בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא, וַיֹּאמְרוּ שָׁם, חָטָאנוּ לַיהוָה; וַיִּשְׁפֹּט שְׁמוּאֵל אֶת-בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, בַּמִּצְפָּה.
vayikavtsu hamitspatah vayish'avu-mayim vayishpekhu lifnei YHWH, vayatsumu bayom hahu, vayomru sham, khatanu laYHWH; vayishpot Shmuel et-bnei Yisrael, bamitspah.
And they gathered together to Mizpah, and drew water, and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there: 'We have sinned against the LORD.' And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpah.
7.
וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים, כִּי-הִתְקַבְּצוּ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל הַמִּצְפָּתָה, וַיַּעֲלוּ סַרְנֵי-פְלִשְׁתִּים, אֶל-יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, וַיִּרְאוּ מִפְּנֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים.
vayishme'u felishtim, ki-hitkabtsu venei-Yisrael hamitspatah, vaya'alu sarnei-felishtim, el-Yisrael; vayishme'u bnei Yisrael, vayir'u mipnei felishtim.
And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.

וַיֹּאמְרוּ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל, אֶל-שְׁמוּאֵל, אַל-תַּחֲרֵשׁ מִמֶּנּוּ, מִזְּעֹק אֶל-יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ; וְיֹשִׁעֵנוּ, מִיַּד פְּלִשְׁתִּים.
vayomru venei-Yisrael, el-Shmuel, al-takharesh mimenu, mize'ok el-YHWH Eloheinu; veyoshi'enu, miyad felishtim.
And the children of Israel said to Samuel: 'Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that He save us out of the hand of the Philistines.'
9.
וַיִּקַּח שְׁמוּאֵל, טְלֵה חָלָב אֶחָד, ויעלה וַיַּעֲלֵהוּ עוֹלָה כָּלִיל, לַיהוָה; וַיִּזְעַק שְׁמוּאֵל אֶל-יְהוָה בְּעַד יִשְׂרָאֵל, וַיַּעֲנֵהוּ יְהוָה.
vayikakh Shmuel, teleh khalav ekhad, vaya'alehahu olah kalil, laYHWH; vayiz'ak Shmuel el-YHWH be'ad Yisrael, vaya'anehu YHWH.
And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a whole burnt-offering unto the LORD; and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD answered him.
10.
וַיְהִי שְׁמוּאֵל, מַעֲלֶה הָעוֹלָה, וּפְלִשְׁתִּים נִגְּשׁוּ, לַמִּלְחָמָה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיַּרְעֵם יְהוָה בְּקוֹל-גָּדוֹל בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא עַל-פְּלִשְׁתִּים, וַיְהֻמֵּם, וַיִּנָּגְפוּ, לִפְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל.
vayehi Shmuel, ma'aleh ha'olah, uPelishtim niggeshu, lamilkhamah beyisrael; vayar'em YHWH bekol-gadol bayom hahu al-Pelishtim, vayehumem, vayinnagefu, lifnei Yisrael.
And as Samuel was offering up the burnt-offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel; but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten down before Israel.
11.
וַיֵּצְאוּ אַנְשֵׁי יִשְׂרָאֵל, מִן-הַמִּצְפָּה, וַיִּרְדְּפוּ, אֶת-פְּלִשְׁתִּים; וַיַּכּוּם, עַד-מִתַּחַת לְבֵית כָּר.
vayetze'u anshei Yisrael, min-hamitzpah, vayirdefu, et-Pelishtim; vayakkum, ad-mitakhat lebeit Kar.
And the men of Israel went out of Mizpah, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Beth-car.
12.
וַיִּקַּח שְׁמוּאֵל אֶבֶן אַחַת, וַיָּשֶׂם בֵּין-הַמִּצְפָּה וּבֵין הַשֵּׁן, וַיִּקְרָא אֶת-שְׁמָהּ, אֶבֶן הָעָזֶר; וַיֹּאמַר, עַד-הֵנָּה עֲזָרָנוּ יְהוָה.
vayikakh Shmuel even akhat, vayasem bein-hamitzpah uvein hashen, vayikra et-shemah, even ha'ezer; vayomer, ad-hennah azaranu YHWH.
Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and called the name of it Eben-ezer, saying: 'Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.'
13.
וַיִּכָּנְעוּ, הַפְּלִשְׁתִּים, וְלֹא-יָסְפוּ עוֹד, לָבוֹא בִּגְבוּל יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַתְּהִי יַד-יְהוָה בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּים, כֹּל יְמֵי שְׁמוּאֵל.
vayikane'u hapelishtim velo-yasfu od lavo bigvul Yisrael vetehi yad-YHWH bapelishtim kol yeme Shemu'el.
So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more within the border of Israel; and the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
14.
וַתָּשֹׁבְנָה הֶעָרִים אֲשֶׁר לָקְחוּ-פְלִשְׁתִּים מֵאֵת יִשְׂרָאֵל לְיִשְׂרָאֵל, מֵעֶקְרוֹן וְעַד-גַּת, וְאֶת-גְּבוּלָן, הִצִּיל יִשְׂרָאֵל מִיַּד פְּלִשְׁתִּים; וַיְהִי שָׁלוֹם, בֵּין יִשְׂרָאֵל וּבֵין הָאֱמֹרִי.
vatashovnah he'arim asher lakhu-felishtim me'et Yisrael leYisrael me'Ekron ve'ad-gat ve'et-gevulan hitzil Yisrael miyad pelishtim vayehi Shalom bein Yisrael uvein ha'emori.
And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the border thereof did Israel deliver out of the hand of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.
15.
וַיִּשְׁפֹּט שְׁמוּאֵל אֶת-יִשְׂרָאֵל, כֹּל יְמֵי חַיָּיו.
vayishpot Shemu'el et-Yisrael kol yeme khayav.
And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.
16.
וְהָלַךְ, מִדֵּי שָׁנָה בְּשָׁנָה, וְסָבַב בֵּית-אֵל, וְהַגִּלְגָּל וְהַמִּצְפָּה; וְשָׁפַט, אֶת-יִשְׂרָאֵל--אֵת כָּל-הַמְּקוֹמוֹת, הָאֵלֶּה.
vehalakh mide shanah beshanah vesavab bet-el vehagilgal vehamitzpah veshafat et-Yisrael et kol-hamekomot ha'eleh.
And he went from year to year in circuit to Beth-el, and Gilgal, and Mizpah; and he judged Israel in all those places.
17.
וּתְשֻׁבָתוֹ הָרָמָתָה כִּי-שָׁם בֵּיתוֹ, וְשָׁם שָׁפָט אֶת-יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיִּבֶן-שָׁם מִזְבֵּחַ, לַיהוָה.
uteshuvato haramata ki-sham beito, vesham shafat et-Yisrael; vayiven-sham mizbeach, laAdonai.
And his return was to Ramah, for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and he built there an altar unto the LORD.
