1.
וּפְלִשְׁתִּים, לָקְחוּ, אֵת, אֲרוֹן הָאֱלֹהִים; וַיְבִאֻהוּ מֵאֶבֶן הָעֵזֶר, אַשְׁדּוֹדָה.
ufelishtim, laqkhu, et, aron haelohim; vayvi'uhu me'even ha'ezer, ashdodah.
Now the Philistines had taken the ark of God, and they brought it from Eben-ezer unto Ashdod.
2.
וַיִּקְחוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים אֶת-אֲרוֹן הָאֱלֹהִים, וַיָּבִאוּ אֹתוֹ בֵּית דָּגוֹן; וַיַּצִּיגוּ אֹתוֹ, אֵצֶל דָּגוֹן.
Vayikhu Felishtim et-aron haElohim, vayavi'u oto beit Dagon; vayatzigu oto, etzel Dagon.
And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.
3.
וַיַּשְׁכִּמוּ אַשְׁדּוֹדִים, מִמָּחֳרָת, וְהִנֵּה דָגוֹן נֹפֵל לְפָנָיו אַרְצָה, לִפְנֵי אֲרוֹן יְהוָה; וַיִּקְחוּ, אֶת-דָּגוֹן, וַיָּשִׁבוּ אֹתוֹ, לִמְקוֹמוֹ.
Vayashkimu Ashdodim, mimakhorat, vehinneh Dagon nofel lefanav artza, lifnei aron YHWH; vayikhu, et-Dagon, vayashivu oto, limkomo.
And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.
4.
וַיַּשְׁכִּמוּ בַבֹּקֶר, מִמָּחֳרָת, וְהִנֵּה דָגוֹן נֹפֵל לְפָנָיו אַרְצָה, לִפְנֵי אֲרוֹן יְהוָה; וְרֹאשׁ דָּגוֹן וּשְׁתֵּי כַּפּוֹת יָדָיו, כְּרֻתוֹת אֶל-הַמִּפְתָּן--רַק דָּגוֹן, נִשְׁאַר עָלָיו.
Vayashkimu vaboker, mimakhorat, vehinneh Dagon nofel lefanav artza, lifnei aron YHWH; verosh Dagon ushtei kapot yadav, kerutot el-hamiftan--rak Dagon, nish'ar alav.
And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands lay cut off upon the threshold; only the trunk of Dagon was left to him.
5.
עַל-כֵּן לֹא-יִדְרְכוּ כֹהֲנֵי דָגוֹן וְכָל-הַבָּאִים בֵּית-דָּגוֹן, עַל-מִפְתַּן דָּגוֹן--בְּאַשְׁדּוֹד: עַד, הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה.
Al-ken lo-yidrekhu kohenei Dagon vekhal-haba'im beit-Dagon, al-miftan Dagon--beAshdod: ad, hayom hazeh.
Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.
6.
וַתִּכְבַּד יַד-יְהוָה אֶל-הָאַשְׁדּוֹדִים, וַיְשִׁמֵּם; וַיַּךְ אֹתָם בעפלים בַּטְּחֹרִים, אֶת-אַשְׁדּוֹד וְאֶת-גְּבוּלֶיהָ.
vatifkabed yad-YHWH el-ha'ashdodim, vayishmem; vayak otam ba'aphalim battchorim, et-ashdod ve'et-gvuleha.
But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and He destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the borders thereof.
7.
וַיִּרְאוּ אַנְשֵׁי-אַשְׁדּוֹד, כִּי-כֵן; וְאָמְרוּ, לֹא-יֵשֵׁב אֲרוֹן אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל עִמָּנוּ--כִּי-קָשְׁתָה יָדוֹ עָלֵינוּ, וְעַל דָּגוֹן אֱלֹהֵינוּ.
vayiru anshei-ashdod, ki-ken; ve'amru, lo-yeshev aron Elohei Yisrael imanu--ki-qashtah yado aleinu, ve'al dagon Eloheinu.
And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said: 'The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us; for His hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.'
8.
וַיִּשְׁלְחוּ וַיַּאַסְפוּ אֶת-כָּל-סַרְנֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים אֲלֵיהֶם, וַיֹּאמְרוּ מַה-נַּעֲשֶׂה לַאֲרוֹן אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, וַיֹּאמְרוּ, גַּת יִסֹּב אֲרוֹן אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיַּסֵּבּוּ, אֶת-אֲרוֹן אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל.
vayishluchu vaya'asfu et-kol-sarnei pheshtim aleihem, vayomru mah-na'aseh la'aron Elohei Yisrael, vayomru, gat yiso avron Elohei Yisrael; vayasebu, et-aron Elohei Yisrael.
They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said: 'What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?' And they answered: 'Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath.' And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.
9.
וַיְהִי אַחֲרֵי הֵסַבּוּ אֹתוֹ, וַתְּהִי יַד-יְהוָה בָּעִיר מְהוּמָה גְּדוֹלָה מְאֹד, וַיַּךְ אֶת-אַנְשֵׁי הָעִיר, מִקָּטֹן וְעַד-גָּדוֹל; וַיִּשָּׂתְרוּ לָהֶם, עפלים טְחֹרִים.
vayehi acharei hesabu oto, vattehi yad-YHWH ba'ir mehumah gdolah me'od, vayak et-anshei ha'ir, miqaton ve'ad-gadol; vayissatru lahem, aphalim tchorim.
And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great discomfiture; and He smote the men of the city, both small and great, and emerods broke out upon them.
10.
וַיְשַׁלְּחוּ אֶת-אֲרוֹן הָאֱלֹהִים, עֶקְרוֹן; וַיְהִי, כְּבוֹא אֲרוֹן הָאֱלֹהִים עֶקְרוֹן, וַיִּזְעֲקוּ הָעֶקְרֹנִים לֵאמֹר הֵסַבּוּ אֵלַי אֶת-אֲרוֹן אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, לַהֲמִיתֵנִי וְאֶת-עַמִּי.
vayshalchu et-aron ha'Elohim Ekron vayehi kevo aron ha'Elohim Ekron vayiz'aku ha'Ekronim lemor hesabu elay et-aron elohei Yisrael lahamiteni ve'et-ammi.
So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying: 'They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.'
11.
וַיִּשְׁלְחוּ וַיַּאַסְפוּ אֶת-כָּל-סַרְנֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים, וַיֹּאמְרוּ שַׁלְּחוּ אֶת-אֲרוֹן אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְיָשֹׁב לִמְקוֹמוֹ, וְלֹא-יָמִית אֹתִי, וְאֶת-עַמִּי: כִּי-הָיְתָה מְהוּמַת-מָוֶת בְּכָל-הָעִיר, כָּבְדָה מְאֹד יַד הָאֱלֹהִים שָׁם.
vayishlechu vay'asfu et-kol sarnei Pelishtim vayomru shalchu et-aron elohei Yisrael veyashov limkomo velo-yamit oti ve'et-ammi ki-hayetah mehumat-mavet bekhol-hair kavedah me'od yad ha'Elohim sham.
They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and they said: 'Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go back to its own place, that it slay us not, and our people'; for there was a deadly discomfiture throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
12.
וְהָאֲנָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר לֹא-מֵתוּ, הֻכּוּ בעפלים בַּטְּחֹרִים; וַתַּעַל שַׁוְעַת הָעִיר, הַשָּׁמָיִם.
veha'anashim asher lo-metu huku ba'aphalim batherorim vata'al shavat hair hashamayim.
And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods; and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
