1.
וַיְהִי, כַּאֲשֶׁר שָׁב שָׁאוּל, מֵאַחֲרֵי, פְּלִשְׁתִּים; וַיַּגִּדוּ לוֹ, לֵאמֹר, הִנֵּה דָוִד, בְּמִדְבַּר עֵין גֶּדִי.
vayhi ka'asher shav sha'ul me'acharei pelishtim vayagidu lo lemor hine david bemidbar ein gedi
And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying: 'Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.'
2.
וַיִּקַּח שָׁאוּל, שְׁלֹשֶׁת אֲלָפִים אִישׁ בָּחוּר--מִכָּל-יִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיֵּלֶךְ, לְבַקֵּשׁ אֶת-דָּוִד וַאֲנָשָׁיו, עַל-פְּנֵי, צוּרֵי הַיְּעֵלִים.
vayikach sha'ul sheloshet alafim ish bachur mikol yisrael vayelekh levakesh et david va'anashav al penei tzurei haye'elim
Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.
3.
וַיָּבֹא אֶל-גִּדְרוֹת הַצֹּאן עַל-הַדֶּרֶךְ, וְשָׁם מְעָרָה, וַיָּבֹא שָׁאוּל, לְהָסֵךְ אֶת-רַגְלָיו; וְדָוִד, וַאֲנָשָׁיו, בְּיַרְכְּתֵי הַמְּעָרָה, יֹשְׁבִים.
vayavo el gidrot hatzon al haderekh vesham me'arah vayavo sha'ul lehasekh et raglav vedavid va'anashav beyarketei hame'arah yoshvim
And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet. Now David and his men were sitting in the innermost parts of the cave.

וַיֹּאמְרוּ אַנְשֵׁי דָוִד אֵלָיו, הִנֵּה הַיּוֹם אֲשֶׁר-אָמַר יְהוָה אֵלֶיךָ הִנֵּה אָנֹכִי נֹתֵן אֶת-איביך אֹיִבְךָ בְּיָדֶךָ, וְעָשִׂיתָ לּוֹ, כַּאֲשֶׁר יִטַב בְּעֵינֶיךָ; וַיָּקָם דָּוִד, וַיִּכְרֹת אֶת-כְּנַף-הַמְּעִיל אֲשֶׁר-לְשָׁאוּל--בַּלָּט.
vayomru anshei david elayiv hine hayom asher amar YHWH eleykha hine anokhi noten et oyivkha beyadekha ve'asita lo ka'asher yitav be'eyneykha vayaqam david vayikhrot et kenaf hame'il asher lesha'ul balat
And the men of David said unto him: 'Behold the day in which the LORD hath said unto thee: Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thy hand, and thou shalt do to him as it shall seem good unto thee.' Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily.

וַיְהִי, אַחֲרֵי-כֵן, וַיַּךְ לֵב-דָּוִד, אֹתוֹ--עַל אֲשֶׁר כָּרַת, אֶת-כָּנָף אֲשֶׁר לְשָׁאוּל.
vayhi akharei-khen vayakh lev-david oto al asher karat et-kanaf asher lesha'ul
And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt.
6.
וַיֹּאמֶר לַאֲנָשָׁיו חָלִילָה לִּי מֵיְהוָה, אִם-אֶעֱשֶׂה אֶת-הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה לַאדֹנִי לִמְשִׁיחַ יְהוָה--לִשְׁלֹחַ יָדִי, בּוֹ: כִּי-מְשִׁיחַ יְהוָה, הוּא.
vayomer la'anashav khalila li meYHWH im-ae'seh et-hadavar hazeh la'adoni limshich YHWH lishloakh yadi bo ki-meshich YHWH hu
And he said unto his men: 'The LORD forbid it me, that I should do this thing unto my lord, the LORD'S anointed, to put forth my hand against him, seeing he is the LORD'S anointed.'

וַיְשַׁסַּע דָּוִד אֶת-אֲנָשָׁיו בַּדְּבָרִים, וְלֹא נְתָנָם לָקוּם אֶל-שָׁאוּל; וְשָׁאוּל קָם מֵהַמְּעָרָה, וַיֵּלֶךְ בַּדָּרֶךְ.
vaysas'a david et-anashav baddvarim velo netanam lakum el-sha'ul vesha'ul kam meham'ara vayelekh baddarekh
So David checked his men with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. And Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.
8.
וַיָּקָם דָּוִד אַחֲרֵי-כֵן, וַיֵּצֵא מן המערה מֵהַמְּעָרָה, וַיִּקְרָא אַחֲרֵי-שָׁאוּל לֵאמֹר, אֲדֹנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ; וַיַּבֵּט שָׁאוּל אַחֲרָיו, וַיִּקֹּד דָּוִד אַפַּיִם אַרְצָה וַיִּשְׁתָּחוּ.
vayakam david akharei-khen vayetze min ham'ara meham'ara vayikra akharei-sha'ul lemor adoni hamelekh vayabet sha'ul akharav vayikod david apayim artza vayshtakhu
David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying: 'My lord the king.' And when Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth, and prostrated himself.
9.
וַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִד לְשָׁאוּל, לָמָּה תִשְׁמַע אֶת-דִּבְרֵי אָדָם לֵאמֹר: הִנֵּה דָוִד, מְבַקֵּשׁ רָעָתֶךָ.
vayomer David leshaul, lammah tishma et-divrei adam lemor: hinneh David, mevakkesh ra'atekha.
And David said to Saul: 'Wherefore hearkenest thou to men's words, saying: Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?
10.
הִנֵּה הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה רָאוּ עֵינֶיךָ, אֵת אֲשֶׁר-נְתָנְךָ יְהוָה הַיּוֹם בְּיָדִי בַּמְּעָרָה, וְאָמַר לַהֲרָגְךָ, וַתָּחָס עָלֶיךָ; וָאֹמַר, לֹא-אֶשְׁלַח יָדִי בַּאדֹנִי--כִּי-מְשִׁיחַ יְהוָה, הוּא.
hinneh hayyom hazzeh ra'u eineykha, et asher-netankha YHWH hayyom beyadi bam'arah, ve'amar laharagekha, vattachas alekha; ve'omar, lo-eshlach yadi baadoni--ki-meshiach YHWH, hu.
Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to-day into my hand in the cave; and some bade me kill thee; but mine eye spared thee; and I said: I will not put forth my hand against my lord; for he is the LORD'S anointed.
11.
וְאָבִי רְאֵה--גַּם רְאֵה אֶת-כְּנַף מְעִילְךָ, בְּיָדִי: כִּי בְּכָרְתִי אֶת-כְּנַף מְעִילְךָ וְלֹא הֲרַגְתִּיךָ, דַּע וּרְאֵה כִּי אֵין בְּיָדִי רָעָה וָפֶשַׁע וְלֹא-חָטָאתִי לָךְ--וְאַתָּה צֹדֶה אֶת-נַפְשִׁי, לְקַחְתָּהּ.
ve'avi re'eh--gam re'eh et-kenaf me'ilkha, beyadi: ki bekhorti et-kenaf me'ilkha velo haragtikha, da ure'eh ki ein beyadi ra'ah vafescha velo-chatati lakh--ve'attah tzodeh et-nafshi, lekachtah.
Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand; for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against thee, though thou layest wait for my soul to take it.
12.
יִשְׁפֹּט יְהוָה בֵּינִי וּבֵינֶךָ, וּנְקָמַנִי יְהוָה מִמֶּךָּ; וְיָדִי, לֹא תִהְיֶה-בָּךְ.
yishpot YHWH beini uveinekha, unqamani YHWH mimmekha; veyadi, lo tihyeh-bakh.
The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee; but my hand shall not be upon thee.
13.
כַּאֲשֶׁר יֹאמַר, מְשַׁל הַקַּדְמֹנִי, מֵרְשָׁעִים, יֵצֵא רֶשַׁע; וְיָדִי, לֹא תִהְיֶה-בָּךְ.
ka'asher yomar, meshal ha-kadmoni, me-rsha'im, yetze resha; ve-yadi, lo tiheyeh-bakh.
As saith the proverb of the ancients: Out of the wicked cometh forth wickedness; but my hand shall not be upon thee.
14.
אַחֲרֵי מִי יָצָא מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל, אַחֲרֵי מִי אַתָּה רֹדֵף: אַחֲרֵי כֶּלֶב מֵת, אַחֲרֵי פַּרְעֹשׁ אֶחָד.
acharei mi yatsa melekh yisrael, acharei mi atah rodef: acharei kelev met, acharei paro'sh echad.
After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea.
15.
וְהָיָה יְהוָה לְדַיָּן, וְשָׁפַט בֵּינִי וּבֵינֶךָ; וְיֵרֶא וְיָרֵב אֶת-רִיבִי, וְיִשְׁפְּטֵנִי מִיָּדֶךָ.
ve-hayah YHWH le-dayan, ve-shafat beyni u-venekha; ve-yere ve-yarev et-rivi, ve-yishpeteni mi-yadekha.
The LORD therefore be judge, and give sentence between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thy hand.'
16.
וַיְהִי כְּכַלּוֹת דָּוִד, לְדַבֵּר אֶת-הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה אֶל-שָׁאוּל, וַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל, הֲקֹלְךָ זֶה בְּנִי דָוִד; וַיִּשָּׂא שָׁאוּל קֹלוֹ, וַיֵּבְךְּ.
vayhi ke-khalot david, le-daber et-ha-dvarim ha-eleh el-shaul, vayomer shaul, ha-qolkha zeh beni david; ve-yisa shaul qolo, ve-yevkh.
And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said: 'Is this thy voice, my son David?' And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.
17.
וַיֹּאמֶר, אֶל-דָּוִד, צַדִּיק אַתָּה, מִמֶּנִּי: כִּי אַתָּה גְּמַלְתַּנִי הַטּוֹבָה, וַאֲנִי גְּמַלְתִּיךָ הָרָעָה.
vayomer el-david tzadik atah mimeni ki atah gemaltani hatovah va'ani gemaltikha hara'ah
And he said to David: 'Thou art more righteous than I; for thou hast rendered unto me good, whereas I have rendered unto thee evil.
18.
ואת וְאַתָּה הִגַּדְתָּ הַיּוֹם, אֵת אֲשֶׁר-עָשִׂיתָה אִתִּי טוֹבָה--אֵת אֲשֶׁר סִגְּרַנִי יְהוָה בְּיָדְךָ, וְלֹא הֲרַגְתָּנִי.
ve'atah higadta hayom et asher-asita iti tovah et asher sigrani YHWH beyadkha velo haratani
And thou hast declared this day how that thou hast dealt well with me; forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me up into thy hand, thou didst not kill me.
19.
וְכִי-יִמְצָא אִישׁ אֶת-אֹיְבוֹ, וְשִׁלְּחוֹ בְּדֶרֶךְ טוֹבָה; וַיהוָה, יְשַׁלֶּמְךָ טוֹבָה, תַּחַת הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה, אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתָה לִי.
vekhi-yimtza ish et-oyvo veshilhu bederekh tovah vaYHWH yeshalmekha tovah tahat hayom hazeh asher asita li
For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore the LORD reward thee good for that which thou hast done unto me this day.
20.
וְעַתָּה הִנֵּה יָדַעְתִּי, כִּי מָלֹךְ תִּמְלוֹךְ; וְקָמָה, בְּיָדְךָ, מַמְלֶכֶת, יִשְׂרָאֵל.
ve'atah hineh yada'ati ki malokh timlokh vekamah beyadkha mamlehet Yisrael
And now, behold, I know that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thy hand.
21.
וְעַתָּה, הִשָּׁבְעָה לִּי בַּיהוָה, אִם-תַּכְרִית אֶת-זַרְעִי, אַחֲרָי; וְאִם-תַּשְׁמִיד אֶת-שְׁמִי, מִבֵּית אָבִי.
ve'attah, hishave'ah li v'Adonai, im-takhrit et-zar'i, acharay; ve'im-tashmid et-shmi, mibe'it avi.
Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father's house.'
22.
וַיִּשָּׁבַע דָּוִד, לְשָׁאוּל; וַיֵּלֶךְ שָׁאוּל, אֶל-בֵּיתוֹ, וְדָוִד וַאֲנָשָׁיו, עָלוּ עַל-הַמְּצוּדָה.
vayyishava David, l'Sha'ul; vayyelekh Sha'ul, el-beito, v'David va'anashav, alu al-hamtzudah.
And David swore unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men got them up unto the stronghold.
