וַיַּעַל, נָחָשׁ הָעַמּוֹנִי, וַיִּחַן, עַל-יָבֵישׁ גִּלְעָד; וַיֹּאמְרוּ כָּל-אַנְשֵׁי יָבֵישׁ, אֶל-נָחָשׁ, כְּרָת-לָנוּ בְרִית, וְנַעַבְדֶךָּ.
vaya'al, nachash ha'amoni, vayichan, al-yavesh gil'ad; vayomru kol-anshei yavesh, el-nachash, kerat-lanu verit, vena'avdeka.
Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh-gilead; and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash: 'Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.'
2.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם, נָחָשׁ הָעַמּוֹנִי, בְּזֹאת אֶכְרֹת לָכֶם, בִּנְקוֹר לָכֶם כָּל-עֵין יָמִין; וְשַׂמְתִּיהָ חֶרְפָּה, עַל-כָּל-יִשְׂרָאֵל.
vayomer aleihem, nachash ha'amoni, bezot ekhrot lakhem, binqor lakhem kol-ein yamin; vesamtiha cherpah, al-kol-yisrael.
And Nahash the Ammonite said unto them: 'On this condition will I make it with you, that all your right eyes be put out; and I will lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.'

וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו זִקְנֵי יָבֵישׁ, הֶרֶף לָנוּ שִׁבְעַת יָמִים, וְנִשְׁלְחָה מַלְאָכִים, בְּכֹל גְּבוּל יִשְׂרָאֵל; וְאִם-אֵין מוֹשִׁיעַ אֹתָנוּ, וְיָצָאנוּ אֵלֶיךָ.
vayomru elav ziknei yavesh, heref lanu shiv'at yamim, venishlelah mal'akhim, bekhol gevul yisrael; ve'im-ein moshi'a otanu, veyatsanu eleykha.
And the elders of Jabesh said unto him: 'Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the borders of Israel; and then, if there be none to deliver us, we will come out to thee.'

וַיָּבֹאוּ הַמַּלְאָכִים גִּבְעַת שָׁאוּל, וַיְדַבְּרוּ הַדְּבָרִים בְּאָזְנֵי הָעָם; וַיִּשְׂאוּ כָל-הָעָם אֶת-קוֹלָם, וַיִּבְכּוּ.
vayavo'u hamal'akhim giv'at sha'ul, vaydabru hadevarim be'oznei ha'am; vayis'u khol-ha'am et-kolam, vayikhku.
Then came the messengers to Gibeath-shaul, and spoke these words in the ears of the people; and all the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

וְהִנֵּה שָׁאוּל, בָּא אַחֲרֵי הַבָּקָר מִן-הַשָּׂדֶה, וַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל, מַה-לָּעָם כִּי יִבְכּוּ; וַיְסַפְּרוּ-לוֹ--אֶת-דִּבְרֵי, אַנְשֵׁי יָבֵישׁ.
vehineh sha'ul, ba akharei habakar min-hasadeh, vayomer sha'ul, mah-la'am ki yikhku; vaysapru-lo--et-divrei, anshei yavesh.
And, behold, Saul came following the oxen out of the field; and Saul said: 'What aileth the people that they weep?' And they told him the words of the men of Jabesh.
6.
וַתִּצְלַח רוּחַ-אֱלֹהִים עַל-שָׁאוּל, בשמעו כְּשָׁמְעוֹ אֶת-הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה; וַיִּחַר אַפּוֹ, מְאֹד.
vattitslakh ruakh-elohim al-sha'ul, khesham'o kesham'o et-hedevarim ha'eleh; vayikhar apo, me'od.
And the spirit of God came mightily upon Saul when he heard those words, and his anger was kindled greatly.
7.
וַיִּקַּח צֶמֶד בָּקָר וַיְנַתְּחֵהוּ, וַיְשַׁלַּח בְּכָל-גְּבוּל יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּיַד הַמַּלְאָכִים לֵאמֹר, אֲשֶׁר אֵינֶנּוּ יֹצֵא אַחֲרֵי שָׁאוּל וְאַחַר שְׁמוּאֵל, כֹּה יֵעָשֶׂה לִבְקָרוֹ; וַיִּפֹּל פַּחַד-יְהוָה עַל-הָעָם, וַיֵּצְאוּ כְּאִישׁ אֶחָד.
vayikakh tstemed bakar vaynat'khehu, vay-shalakh bekhol-gevul yisrael beyad hamal'akhim lemor, asher einennu yotse akharei sha'ul ve'akhar shemu'el, koh ye'aseh livkaro; vayipol pakhad-YHWH al-ha'am, vayetse'u ke'ish ekhat.
And he took a yoke of oxen, and cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying: 'Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen.' And the dread of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out as one man.
8.
וַיִּפְקְדֵם, בְּבָזֶק; וַיִּהְיוּ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל שְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת אֶלֶף, וְאִישׁ יְהוּדָה שְׁלֹשִׁים אָלֶף.
vayifkedem, bevazek; vayihyu veney-Yisrael shelosh me'ot elef, ve'ish Yehuda sheloshim alef.
And he numbered them in Bezek; and the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
9.
וַיֹּאמְרוּ לַמַּלְאָכִים הַבָּאִים, כֹּה תֹאמְרוּן לְאִישׁ יָבֵישׁ גִּלְעָד, מָחָר תִּהְיֶה-לָכֶם תְּשׁוּעָה, בחם כְּחֹם הַשָּׁמֶשׁ; וַיָּבֹאוּ הַמַּלְאָכִים, וַיַּגִּידוּ לְאַנְשֵׁי יָבֵישׁ--וַיִּשְׂמָחוּ.
vayomeru lamal'akhim haba'im, koh to'mrun le'ish Yavesh Gil'ad, makhar tiheyeh-lakhem teshu'ah, behom kechom hashemesh; vayavo'u hamal'akhim, vayagidu le'anshey Yavesh--vayismakhu.
And they said unto the messengers that came: 'Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh-gilead: To-morrow, by the time the sun is hot, ye shall have deliverance.' And the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.
10.
וַיֹּאמְרוּ אַנְשֵׁי יָבֵישׁ, מָחָר נֵצֵא אֲלֵיכֶם; וַעֲשִׂיתֶם לָנוּ, כְּכָל-הַטּוֹב בְּעֵינֵיכֶם.
vayomeru anshey Yavesh, makhar netze aleikhem; va'asitem lanu, kekhol-hatov be'eineikhem.
And the men of Jabesh said: 'To-morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.'
11.
וַיְהִי מִמָּחֳרָת, וַיָּשֶׂם שָׁאוּל אֶת-הָעָם שְׁלֹשָׁה רָאשִׁים, וַיָּבֹאוּ בְתוֹךְ-הַמַּחֲנֶה בְּאַשְׁמֹרֶת הַבֹּקֶר, וַיַּכּוּ אֶת-עַמּוֹן עַד-חֹם הַיּוֹם; וַיְהִי הַנִּשְׁאָרִים וַיָּפֻצוּ, וְלֹא נִשְׁאֲרוּ-בָם שְׁנַיִם יָחַד.
vayhi mimokhorat, vayasem Sha'ul et-ha'am shelosha roshim, vayavo'u vetokh-hamakhane be'ashmoret haboker, vayaku et-Ammon ad-chom hayom; vayahy hannish'arim vayafutzu, velo nish'aru-vam shenayim yakhad.
And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and smote the Ammonites until the heat of the day; and it came to pass, that they that remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.
12.
וַיֹּאמֶר הָעָם, אֶל-שְׁמוּאֵל, מִי הָאֹמֵר, שָׁאוּל יִמְלֹךְ עָלֵינוּ: תְּנוּ הָאֲנָשִׁים, וּנְמִיתֵם.
Vayomer ha'am, el-Shmuel, mi ha'omer, Sha'ul yimlokh aleinu: tenu ha'anashim, unmitem.
And the people said unto Samuel: 'Who is he that said: Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.'
13.
וַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל, לֹא-יוּמַת אִישׁ בַּיּוֹם הַזֶּה: כִּי הַיּוֹם עָשָׂה-יְהוָה תְּשׁוּעָה, בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל.
Vayomer Sha'ul, lo-yumat ish bayom hazeh: ki hayom asah-YHWH tshu'ah, beyisrael.
And Saul said: 'There shall not a man be put to death this day; for to-day the LORD hath wrought deliverance in Israel.'
14.
וַיֹּאמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל אֶל-הָעָם, לְכוּ וְנֵלְכָה הַגִּלְגָּל; וּנְחַדֵּשׁ שָׁם, הַמְּלוּכָה.
Vayomer Shmuel el-ha'am, lekhu venelkhah hagilgal; unchadesh sham, hamelukhah.
Then said Samuel to the people: 'Come and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.'
15.
וַיֵּלְכוּ כָל-הָעָם הַגִּלְגָּל, וַיַּמְלִכוּ שָׁם אֶת-שָׁאוּל לִפְנֵי יְהוָה בַּגִּלְגָּל, וַיִּזְבְּחוּ-שָׁם זְבָחִים שְׁלָמִים, לִפְנֵי יְהוָה; וַיִּשְׂמַח שָׁם שָׁאוּל וְכָל-אַנְשֵׁי יִשְׂרָאֵל, עַד-מְאֹד.
Vayekhu khol-ha'am hagilgal, vayamlkhu sham et-Sha'ul lifnei YHWH bagilgal, vayizbechu-sham zvachim shlamim, lifnei YHWH; vayismach sham Sha'ul vekhol-anshei yisrael, ad-me'od.
And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace-offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
