1.
וּפְלִשְׁתִּים, נִלְחֲמוּ בְיִשְׂרָאֵל; וַיָּנָס אִישׁ-יִשְׂרָאֵל מִפְּנֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים, וַיִּפְּלוּ חֲלָלִים בְּהַר גִּלְבֹּעַ.
u'felishtim, nilchamu veYisrael; vayanas ish-Yisrael mipnei felishtim, vayip'lu chalalim beHar Gilboa.
Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.
2.
וַיַּדְבְּקוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים, אַחֲרֵי שָׁאוּל וְאַחֲרֵי בָנָיו; וַיַּכּוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים, אֶת-יוֹנָתָן וְאֶת-אֲבִינָדָב וְאֶת-מַלְכִּישׁוּעַ--בְּנֵי שָׁאוּל.
vayadbequ felishtim, acharei Sha'ul ve'acharei banav; vayaku felishtim, et-Yonatan ve'et-Avinadav ve'et-Malkishua--bnei Sha'ul.
And the Philistines followed hard after Saul and after his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul.
3.
וַתִּכְבַּד הַמִּלְחָמָה עַל-שָׁאוּל, וַיִּמְצָאֻהוּ הַמּוֹרִים בַּקָּשֶׁת; וַיָּחֶל, מִן-הַיּוֹרִים.
vatichtad hamilchamah al-Sha'ul, vayimtza'uhu hamorim baqashet; vayachel, min-hayorim.
And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers overtook him; and he was in anguish by reason of the archers.

וַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל אֶל-נֹשֵׂא כֵלָיו שְׁלֹף חַרְבְּךָ וְדָקְרֵנִי בָהּ, פֶּן-יָבֹאוּ הָעֲרֵלִים הָאֵלֶּה וְהִתְעַלְּלוּ-בִי, וְלֹא אָבָה נֹשֵׂא כֵלָיו, כִּי יָרֵא מְאֹד; וַיִּקַּח שָׁאוּל אֶת-הַחֶרֶב, וַיִּפֹּל עָלֶיהָ.
vayo'mer Sha'ul el-nose chelav charevcha vedaqreni vah, pen-yavo'u ha'arelim ha'eleh vehit'allu-vi, velo avah nose chelav, ki yare me'od; vayiqach Sha'ul et-hacherev, vayipol aleha.
Then said Saul unto his armour-bearer: 'Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and make a mock of me.' But his armour-bearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took his sword, and fell upon it.
5.
וַיַּרְא נֹשֵׂא-כֵלָיו, כִּי מֵת שָׁאוּל; וַיִּפֹּל גַּם-הוּא עַל-הַחֶרֶב, וַיָּמֹת.
vayar nose-kelav, ki met Sha'ul; vayipol gam-hu al-ha-cherev, vayamot.
And when his armour-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell upon his sword, and died.
6.
וַיָּמָת שָׁאוּל וּשְׁלֹשֶׁת בָּנָיו, וְכָל-בֵּיתוֹ יַחְדָּו מֵתוּ.
vayamat Sha'ul ushloshet banav, vekhal-beto yachdav metu.
So Saul died, and his three sons; and all his house died together.
7.
וַיִּרְאוּ כָּל-אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲשֶׁר-בָּעֵמֶק, כִּי נָסוּ, וְכִי-מֵתוּ, שָׁאוּל וּבָנָיו; וַיַּעַזְבוּ עָרֵיהֶם, וַיָּנֻסוּ, וַיָּבֹאוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים, וַיֵּשְׁבוּ בָּהֶם.
vayir'u kol-ish Yisrael asher-ba'emek, ki nasu, vekhi-metu, Sha'ul ubanav; vaya'azvu arehem, vyanusu, vayavo'u Felishtim, vayeshevu bahem.
And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that [Israel] fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook their cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
8.
וַיְהִי, מִמָּחֳרָת, וַיָּבֹאוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים, לְפַשֵּׁט אֶת-הַחֲלָלִים; וַיִּמְצְאוּ אֶת-שָׁאוּל וְאֶת-בָּנָיו, נֹפְלִים בְּהַר גִּלְבֹּעַ.
vayehi, mimachorat, vayavo'u Felishtim, lefarshet et-ha-chalalim; vayimtse'u et-sha'ul ve'et-banav, nofelim behar Gilboa.
And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his sons fallen in mount Gilboa.
9.
וַיַּפְשִׁיטֻהוּ--וַיִּשְׂאוּ אֶת-רֹאשׁוֹ, וְאֶת-כֵּלָיו; וַיְשַׁלְּחוּ בְאֶרֶץ-פְּלִשְׁתִּים סָבִיב, לְבַשֵּׂר אֶת-עֲצַבֵּיהֶם--וְאֶת-הָעָם.
vayafshituhu -- vayis'u et-rosho, ve'et-kelav; vayshalchu ve'eretz-pelishtim saviv, levaser et-atzatbehem -- ve'et-ha'am.
And they stripped him, and took his head, and his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to carry the tidings unto their idols, and to the people.
10.
וַיָּשִׂימוּ, אֶת-כֵּלָיו, בֵּית, אֱלֹהֵיהֶם; וְאֶת-גֻּלְגָּלְתּוֹ תָקְעוּ, בֵּית דָּגוֹן.
vayasimu, et-kelav, beit, elohehem; ve'et-gulgaltot tak'u, beit dagon.
And they put his armour in the house of their gods, and fastened his head in the house of Dagon.
11.
וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ, כֹּל יָבֵישׁ גִּלְעָד, אֵת כָּל-אֲשֶׁר-עָשׂוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים, לְשָׁאוּל.
vayishme'u, kol yavesh gil'ad, et kol-asher-asu pelishtim, lesha'ul.
And when all Jabesh-gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,
12.
וַיָּקוּמוּ, כָּל-אִישׁ חַיִל, וַיִּשְׂאוּ אֶת-גּוּפַת שָׁאוּל וְאֵת גּוּפֹת בָּנָיו, וַיְבִיאוּם יָבֵישָׁה; וַיִּקְבְּרוּ אֶת-עַצְמוֹתֵיהֶם תַּחַת הָאֵלָה, בְּיָבֵשׁ, וַיָּצוּמוּ, שִׁבְעַת יָמִים.
vayakumu, kol-ish chayil, vayis'u et-gufat sha'ul ve'et gufot banav, vayvium yaveshah; vayikberu et-atzmoteihem tachat ha'elah, beyavesh, vayatzumu, shiv'at yamim.
all the valiant men arose, and took away the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the terebinth in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
13.
וַיָּמָת שָׁאוּל, בְּמַעֲלוֹ אֲשֶׁר מָעַל בַּיהוָה, עַל-דְּבַר יְהוָה, אֲשֶׁר לֹא-שָׁמָר; וְגַם-לִשְׁאוֹל בָּאוֹב, לִדְרוֹשׁ.
vayamat sha'ul bema'alo asher ma'al bayhwh al devar yhwh asher lo shamar vegam lish'ol ba'ov lidrosh
So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, because of the word of the LORD, which he kept not; and also for that he asked counsel of a ghost, to inquire thereby,
14.
וְלֹא-דָרַשׁ בַּיהוָה, וַיְמִיתֵהוּ; וַיַּסֵּב, אֶת-הַמְּלוּכָה, לְדָוִיד, בֶּן-יִשָׁי.
velo darash bayhwh vaymitehu vayasev et hammelukah ledavid ben yishay
and inquired not of the LORD; therefore He slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.
